Why recent CDs and remastered CDs sound bad

Came across this on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TlQo9k827c) (sorry if it has been mentioned somewhere here already), and thought it was interesting, and disappointing too.

It compares two exact CDs, one pre-mid-90s, and one since then. It tries to show that music is being recorded louder to be competitive, but results in less definition/spikes if the sound is constantly maxed out during (re)recording.

Not sure if this is true though, but if it was, I thought it was interesting (for those who still buy CDs), who may need to look for older releases to get better quality sound.

I had noticed that. Some of the older cds I own are softer than newer ones, so I continually have to change the volume on my headphones to accommodate those changes. Sad really.

Yea but their last 2 albums sucked anyway. Come to think of it, their first 4 are the only good ones :p

interesting there was a big difference between the two seems sort of pointless too, as the guy said you do have a volume control to make it louder anyway

The main place it works is on jukeboxes. Oasis were always smug about the fact that when their songs came on in a pub they were always louder than everything else because they'd completely redlined the recording.
