One for this evening before I step out...

I'm starting to think I should invest in a light box, or at least a garden

these pictures are fantastic. Leave my pale office single ceiling light pictures for dead.

Thanks mate!

FYI, I don't use a lightbox - that was taken with the figure sitting on a table with a cloth draped underneath and behind him whilst using normal household light.

I think I saw someone answer the black background question previously, I believe it is black towel as the dark backdrop and the rest is just getting the exposure and lighting right.

Yep. :D

A black towel placed on a table top and one behind the subject - object is illuminated by normal fluorescent household lighting.

The rest is careful tweaking and experimentation with camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, etc).

Don't worry about the lighting and the photo tent/cube too much mate.

I'd suggest investing your funds in upgrading your camera equipment - a DSLR will allow you so much more control that it will cancel out any lighting issues you may have (even a cheaper entry level model).

Excellent shots Fallen! - All bar the 1st are top notch IMO.:cool:
The 1st shot's thrown off a little because of the seem you can see behind the subject, but I know what you mean with lighting because getting that right is a mongrel - You've nailed it with every other shot though dude. ;):)

The shots of Scare-glow and Trap-jaw are excellent man, the colours of Trap-jaw really stand out and the depth in Scare-glow's shots are sweet, I'd like to see you do some more depth experiments with the other figures too. :D
As for the head choice?, I'd go with the 1st as the second looks too much like a Cliché Hairdresser IMO. :p

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

I like the black background but everything you mentioned is why I stopped using it. I use a piece of glass for reflection and it shows up way too much on the black background.

I really don't like the warm white look of the pictures. I am fairly confident it is because of the lighting I am using. I have some cool white fluro globes on the way so hopefully it fixes that issue.

As for the heads, I liked the 2nd head because of the cliché :)
But the first head is winning out for me.

Here are some more depth photos I tried during the same photoshoot;

I only got a Sony DSC -H70. It was on sale and I needed an affordable camera before I went to Phils for my holidays. I was gonna get the H90 but my cousin said that I shouldn't invest to much since it's a Sony cam, if it was either Canon or Nikon, which I thought made sense :)

Nice pic VP! It looks like the colour balance is pretty good. Did you get a remote shutter release to get that 13 sec exposure or set the timer?

Thanks mate.

I used aperture priority and set it at f/16 with the ISO set at 100 - the camera will adjust the shutter speed based upon the available light and film speed (and yes, I used a tripod with a 2 sec timer to reduce camera shake) :)

I'm starting to love this 'Yotsuba' toy/character as well (after seeing Deceptic_Optics and your pics).

May have to pick one up myself since she seems to be very poseable and photographs very well (even though I have no idea who she is or where she's from, but the toy looks cute) :p

This is not really the thread for it but I have a VR (vibration reduction) lens so would I still be getting camera shake in my pics? Is it better to use the timer?

I use a tripod and timer in all my shots now, makes things a million times easier and my shots showed immediate improvement - for what it's worth. ;):)

The vibration reduction (or image stabiliser) cuts down shake but there's no harm in using the timer - I even go as far as configuring the camera to fire off a burst of 5 shots and then pick out the best pic (since sometimes there are slight variations in lighting/shadows).

Yotsuba is from some manga and the story is she is naive and everything is new to her.I think. I just got it becuase This picture (http://www.amiami.jp/images/product/review/112/TOY-RBT-0324_11.jpg)and then This one (http://www.amiami.jp/images/product/review/112/TOY-RBT-0324_12.jpg)made me laugh sooo hard!

As for the timer, I often use it. Even if it's just for a 2 second delay, it minimizes the chances of the small camera shake that naturally happens from pressing the button.

Yeah I did some research and read up about the character - not really my cup of tea, but will probably get the toy anyway simply because it looks so cute.

Just can't decide whether to get the regular one or the vacation version (I have likes and dislikes from both sets in terms of included 'facial expressions') :p

i have vr lenses as well, i only turn it on when im not using a tripod. in able to get better stable shots without a tripod is to have a wider stance and try to keep your hands closer to your body as much as possible prevent less shakes.

as for using tripod i usually take off the vr option as this is really unnecessary as the tripod is already the one stabilising the whole camera and if you look closer maybe in photoshop, once the image is open it is quite sharper when you have vr off when using a tripod.

as for using timer, its a good idea. the less you handle the camera the better and sharper it would get "unless you have a tripod for a body hehehe". as for me i use a remote so its just one click away very useful and helps with battery life cos you dont have to wait for a timer.

Very nice figure (expensive too!), although I think the pic could do with more evenly distributed lighting and his head could be more in focus (since the focal point seems to be his blade weapon, unless that's what you were going for?)

Maybe try playing around with different focal points adjustments?

Nice pics VP and Optics!

When in doubt, shoot a few pics with varying shutter and aperture settings and then pick out the best one later when you view the images on a bigger screen.

I find that the standard screen on the camera (as good as it is) can sometimes give you the impression that the photo looks fine, only for you to find out the photo doesn't look the same when displayed on a bigger screen.

The other alternative is to purchase a HDMI (Type C to Type A) cable and have it connected out the side of the camera to a display whilst you're taking the pics so that you can check and view them as you go along (this option is a major pain in the arse though ;))

Its the Hot Toys Shadow predator, 1/6 scale. Its an exclusive to one of the Hong Kong toy fairs, a scalper bought the majority but I managed to snag one from a contact. I read that Sideshow (US seller for hot toys) are going to release it in the near future, as well as releasing the original predator seen in the Predators movie (its basically a re tooled design of the original predator)

Low Iso speed I would say.

Ok, so after my relative success with Scareglow (http://tetstoys.blogspot.com/2011/05/eeeeeeeeeek-its-scareglow.html), and having just recieved my SDCC Lightning Fury Raiden, I thought I would take some happy snaps.

Turns out that the few paint apps on Scareglow make all the difference. The abundance of murky white on Raiden makes it incredibly hard to get the sculpting details on him.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Wootnchoo/IMG_8491.jpg

I even tried with a dark background, but had little success.

Luckily he looks pretty frikkin awesome without the lights on.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Wootnchoo/IMG_8500.jpg

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Wootnchoo/IMG_8506.jpg

But with the only light source coming from him, the details are still too hard to capture. Afterwards I thought about a far softer lighting and gave it a quick try.

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Wootnchoo/IMG_8513.jpg

Which is OK for larger bits, but then the kanji on his sleeve and facial sculpting is still hard to caprture, although better with softer/less light.
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/Wootnchoo/IMG_8511.jpg

Any ideas on how to get some reasonable details from this situation. Hmm, I have just noticed though, even to the naked eye, it's a bit hard to see the various bits and pieces details.

I took the pics on aperture priority using my Tamron 60mm Macro lens with low ISO and lots of light (courtesy of light box illuminated with 2x5500k bulbs).

I actually had to adjust exposure compensation -1 due to too much light, so my guess would be the combination of the above. :o

(I've also noticed that the Tamron lens I use has excellent colour saturation when there's an abundance of light, so that could have something to do with it as well)

Here are some of my shots for the day, Hot Toys Bruce Lee.

Very very nice - that's such an awesome (and expensive) figure - so lifelike.

What settings are you taking those pics at?

Maybe for ultra realistic subjects (flesh coloured), perhaps change the bulbs on your light box for a warmer light to bring more realism to skin tones? (that's if they're the results you're seeking)

Any ideas on how to get some reasonable details from this situation. Hmm, I have just noticed though, even to the naked eye, it's a bit hard to see the various bits and pieces details.

My suggestion would be to put the figure somewhere relatively dark (as opposed to well lit) and then use softer light bounced off something aimed directly at the subject.

Play with different angles of light aimed at the figure with a low ISO speed and the camera in aperture priority and adjust exposure compensation accordingly.

The shadows (contrast) should highlight the finer details that you want to bring out.

@Hursticon: Realism due to the awesome sculpting skills from the guys at Hot Toys.

I love the glow in the dark pics Tets. I think I'll have to break out my glow in the dark toys too.

@VP: I should have known, lighting is everything. I'm still using room lights (fluoro tube blue cast) with a shade over the top, so it looks a bit off. My settings are usually ISO100, f5.6, exposing for 1-3 seconds.

Well you need to do something about the lighting then mate (with your fancy lightbox and all, you need to fully exploit it's full capabilities). :p

As for camera settings, do you shoot with a consistent focal length, or vary?

I found that with the standard kit lens, image sharpness and quality varies greatly depending on what focal length (and subsequent aperture/shutter setting) is used (more info here (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-S-18-55mm-f-3.5-5.6-IS-II-Lens-Review.aspx)).

I keep it around 50-55mm. I read the linked article, pretty interesting though the range of lens made my wallet cry

Money can't buy everything - but where there's a will, there's a way. :p

I'm the sort of person that when I find a hobby I like, I go all out and seek to attain as much pleasure and enjoyment from it as possible - photography just so happens to be this year's flavour. ;)

Now with Jena, Gamblor, Tetsuwan and others entering the fray with exceedingly great photos themselves - I'm really wondering if I'll ever be able to catch up. :p

Don't be discouraged mate - this is not a race, it's merely an outlet to show how creative you can be with a camera.

Some of my friends have come up with amazing pics purely due to their creativity and image compositions (and nothing to do with what subject they're taking or what sort of camera/lens they're using).

It's great when other people contribute pics to this thread since it gives a different perspective and/or technique which others can adopt or try out.

I think it's safe to say that as students of photography, we're all artists and the camera is our paintbrush, the results that we get with our paintbrush is only limited by our imagination and technique. :)

Love the Streetfighter pic VP. Did you use a bit of plastic for the reflective surface?

Optics those Deadpool pics are so vivid!

Rampagesss, those pics look like he's trying to escape from your yard, like from something from Toy Story :D
