Care to show off your Toy Photographic skills? Here is a thread for everyone to show your talent with taking photos, either advices or tips that you could get the most out of your camera. enjoy and have fun guys.

Now to start of i just took photos of MARVEL SELECT JUGGERNAUT, MARVEL SELECT ABOMINATION, TWIN PACK MARVEL LEGENDS DEADPOOL and my very own favorite custom made MAVEL LEGENDS GAMBIT by customizer loosecollector; these photo was taken by a SLR CANON 450D set up with a light tent with black background and two 50 KW light on each side and just fiddled around with photo set-up in my SLR camera. and tadaa! enjoy guys :D

Wish it was that easy, I love taking photos and I spend countless hours trying to get the best shots but i still think there are way better people doing these shots. beside i still feel like an amateur with my shots. I think the trick is good lighting and a nice set up on your camera and and whoola! but i still havent perfected that yet. but hursty thank for the feedback means alot makes me want to take more photos

Spectacular photos of spectacular figures. I'm tempted to have a go, but I know it will be so basic compared to the quality of your pics. Some time this week I'll look into posting some images.

Another factor contributing to them would be good details on the subject.

Keep the shots coming... Love to see more

Wow those are some awesome shots from everyone. I don't have a flashy camera but occasionally get a decent one. One of my favorite shoots. Not perfect but the colours are vibrant and relatively clear. The figure is a gundam model kit of Shin Musha Gundam. It has a glossy finish hence the seemingly saturated colours.

Thanks for the advice mate.

I've been taking pics with the flash off and the macro setting on - I might experiment with the timer setting too (to obtain more stable shots in the interim).

But yeah, I think lighting is something I really need to look into (and if I start getting serious about photography, maybe even investing in an SLR :D)

Cheers dude. :D

Unfortunately overexposure on that last shot wasn't what i was going for and I'm not too sure why but Close shots of Scourge on a white background never seem to work out too well for me, I think it may have something to do with my camera being about 7-8 years old now - It's Digital but it's quality wasn't even measured in Megapixel's at the time. :p

I don't know, maybe it's also got something to do with the Blue/White spectrum of colours as the only other primary colour present in the pic is a tiny bit of red?

I see how about try black or even just a plain dark background maybe that could work. what ive learnt so far is its not the camera that makes the photographer its the style and how they used it and different ways they use there lighting and background.

That makes a lot of sense actually dude, light on dark and dark on light - So I might give that a go next time and you are right, it's certainly not the camera that makes the photographer but the eye of the beholder. ;):)

You can usefor cheap backgrounds those colored big craft papers, comes in various colors just lay it on the standing area and half rising as the background you'll get a smooth background gradation...:)

TMNT

IMO, purely based on where their Mold design stems from, I reckon these particular Turtles would look far better suited to a Black Background with possibly the use of a faded colour filter or technique of some kind. :)
I reckon if you can achieve that somehow, I reckon you'd easily capture the mood that these guys exude. ;)

*snip*

SCORPION AND SUBZERO

These Guys more or less Have to be on a Black Background, that is all that they need IMO. :)

MIGHTY MUGGZ DECEPTICONS

MIGHTY MUGGZ AUTOBOTS

The white background suits these guys perfectly dude and I love the positioning you've given each member of each group with the scale of Power and Importance extremely clear and evident - That is an excellent and very noteworthy detail dude. ;)

*snip*

SHAIDER

I saw this figure at your place dude and I've always felt that it reminds me of Alpha-5 from MM Power Rangers. :p
With the high use of Reflective, Metallic and Chrome paint apps on this guy Deceptic, I reckon a Black Background would be better suited but with the use of well positioned lights to get some nice reflections going off of him. ;)

*snip*

MASK RIDER BLACK

These guys just look incredible in both Stills and Motion photography! :D
I feel that with his Matte Black finish, he works rather well on a White Background but I also think he'd work just as well on a Black Background which speaks volumes of these Kamen Rider figure's versatility.

*snip*

TF ANIMATED AUTOBOTS

Ah, see where this shot bucks the method of the Mighty Muggs, this shot is great too but my only critique would be Arcee's position as her Back Pack Wings are doing exactly what Scourge did in my photo in that the White is coming across as washed out against the background. :o
I reckon if you can switch her place with Bumblebee maybe, it might help to alleviate that issue - Interestingly though, Ratchet doesn't suffer the same problem due to the shadows he's casting upon himself.:cool:

I know what you mean by this figure's Epic Size and because of that, it would be an absolute effort to get a proper shot of him, of which you have absolutely accomplished dude!:cool:
I think this guy could also benefit from a Black but Star-y Background (Something akin to a Hubble Telescope Photograph ;)) with well positioned lights to show off his stunning Metallic paint apps. :D:cool:

I don't get put off by you guys, I use you all as inspiration to try and better my own shots because whilst I know I'll never be a World Class photographer, nor do I intend to be, I'd like to try and convey certain things in my shots that I see in my Mind's Eye and every little piece of advice helps. :)

Keep up your efforts VP, those shots of 'Meister' and DOTM Shockwave are friggin' awesome man and are highly indicative of your efforts and progressing skills.

Dude, with that new Turtles shot a certain song came to my head that is performed by the group: Lonely Island and references, amongst many things, going to the movies alone. :p
Seriously man, that shot is awesome, great angle, great lighting, great contrasting background and great subject matter!:cool:

The same goes for Deadpool and Spidey, but are the 2 Hulk pics old? - I ask because they seem slightly out of focus in certain areas where I think you might of been trying to highlight other areas? - Not a critique or judgement, just curiosity. :)

I remember the last 2 shots and honestly, I absolutely love that shot of Blastoff/Explorer approaching BB from behind whilst he deals with Bruticus/Colossos! :D:cool:

Also, please don't think I was judging or critiquing your previous shots dude, I only intended to give my opinion and suggestions. :D
I'd like to see you continue to experiment with more backgrounds dude as I think it'll only be of benefit and honestly, I would never of picked any of those shots to be rushed man - If you did?, you fooled me well. :p

They're not bad for something that was taken with a phone's camera Valks!

IIRC, the N96 features a Carl Zeiss lens - which means nothing to me, but someone once told me that they're one of the paramount manufacturers of lens and optics (so that may have something to do with it) :D

Valk, those shots are damn nice for a camera phone dude, the flowers are indeed nice but for me - I like what's in the background most as I love graveyards and especially old ones as the headstone's of those passed can often tell quite a story and impart quite a bit of history. ;):)

Those are some great shots man as that figure/character is really cool IMO and I reckon it would be a fun challenge getting him to show his awesome glow gimmick on camera - Well done dude. :D:cool:

really like that 2nd shot too, it's a great profile shot man - just the slightest bit of over-exposure causing the lit-up areas to 'flare' if you know what I mean, it's something I'm trying to work out of my own shots so if I can figure out how to avoid it I'll let you know. ;):)

Cheers man. :D Scareglow is a challenge. I can do a good shot of just him glowing, but if (like in the second photo) you want someone else in there it's hard to have lots of glow and still be able to see the other character. Even went to the effort of 'light painting' BRS, but the light was too strong, no matter what I tried. I just had an idea now actually... Hmmmmmm.

The flare is an age old issue. Maybe a diffuser of some sort over the harsher light source. I have found putting just a piece of blank paper over a light source (such as a torch) manages to provide enough light without the intensity ruining the shot.

Hmm Id like to try that glow thingie since Ive got the glow in the dark variant Specter figure, but freakin cant figure out my camera:p:p it keeps giving me bright everything , or just a dull glowing thing, aaargh, well done Tets!

Yep, the right lighting, proper focus and minimal handling of the camera is all one really needs. ;)

Great shot VP, it took me about 20secs to realise that the giant grey bit in the top right hand corner of the photo was his bloody MechTech weapon and not his fist :p, it's an excellent shot as he is an interesting figure - Especially with how his rotor blades fold around him to make a 4-point harness/bandolier.

I use a canon A640. Picked it up in Japan and I don't think it has ever been released here. It is sexier than a point and click, but not as complex as an SLR. Cheaper too! Lots of manual setting options, which I find I must have now. Can't stand cameras that have auto-everything!:D

I went the single lens kit since the included lenses they give you are pretty ordinary anyway (according to a couple of friends in the know), so what you save you can invest in better lenses down the track (if you so choose to).

I have the single lens kit, so I don't have a choice (in terms of lens selection), but it's more the different settings and adjustments that are baffling me at the moment.

I'm a newbie to the world of photography and this is my first SLR, so it's trial and error as I go along. :o

just a tip, when you play with shallow DOF, try to focus on the part you want to show... in this case I think should be the head instead of the chest. :D

In the other pics you posted, some of them turn out very nice, like Starscream's head. Galvy head is off focus while the focus point is at his gun. To make the whole galvy in focus, you probably need to close the appature or select a bigger F number.

I made a lightbox awhile ago using a cardboard box and thin cotton material my wife had lying around . Like D_O said, as long as it softens the light it should be OK.
The images in the post here (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showpost.php?p=224045&postcount=33) were taken using that lightbox.

If you have a couple of spare dollars you can pick one up on ebay rather cheaply and you will end up with a better result in the end.

tron07

Instead of light box, I use a lamp and angle it towards a piece of cardboard (white/yellow/blue/etc)to reflect back the light. Another thing I always use is those car window shade, those you can fold and easy to keep. Also use bounce flash instead of direct, bounce towards the celling, the wall behind the camera, the side, etc (better still if you can remote trigger the flash)

On the subject of light boxes, I improvise and use a plastic storage tub - it allows soft light in since it's semi-frosted and I think it does the job (at least for me).

Anyways, some more pics taken with my DSLR and my patented 'light box':

Ah - ok, yeah I reckon the baking paper may work better as it has enough transparency to let a good amount of light in whilst still filtering it. ;):)

Yeah, I know... couldn't get the lighting right for BBee - he kept coming up too dark (ie.couldn't see his facial features properly) or too bright (such as in this case).

The Prime is a Voyager from the DOTM Prime/Commettor K-Mart 2-Pack and the BBee is one of the ROTF Deluxes.

Those are some great shots of MP Starscream dude, you've managed to focus in on his face perfectly in every shot with my favourites being the second and third shots.:D

As for getting the finger point and his head both in focus in the fifth pic - well, that's a tad bit tricky to accomplish. :p

We want to make this thread stand.

It's a father and son kind of moment

I'm not very good at posing my toys, and my voyager Ironhide just likes to fall over all the time.

And a bonus, the Stig.

what have you guys used for the black backgrounds cause they look really good

I don't use a light tent/box - my basic setup is pretty straight forward.

A black towel placed on a table top and one behind the subject - object is illuminated by normal fluorescent household lighting.

The rest is careful tweaking and experimentation with camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, etc).

@VP: Holy S*** dude! - I'm damn loving those Mindwipe pics man, they're friggin' awesome!:cool:

Thanks dude - have now invested in a tripod, so there will be more to come. ;)

Beautiful pics there Jena - the Ironhide ones would look sensational if they were put into some dynamic action poses.

Holy crap Jena, some excellent shots that certainly attest to your skills as a teacher!
those Ironhide shots really do look incredible, it's amazing how you've managed to near perfectly match the lighting on Ironhide with that of the background - It really puts an interesting dimension on the shot. ;)

Yep, all free hand up until now - as steady as my hands are, sometimes it gets really hard holding the camera stable on long exposures. :p

Thank you. I need to play around with posing, all my figures just stand around like a bunch of boring old sods.

Thank you! I wanted to use a real backdrop, it seemed more realistic since he's a live action movie toy. And I thought the sky behind him looked kinda epic, or something.

Hah, gotta love bobblehead Stig! :D

@VP: Great poses with Swerve due but his lighting is a little too skewed towards the blue/green spectrum (Or is that what you were going for?), Galvatron's shots look awesome though IMO - Especially that 1st one! ;)
@Deceptic: Dear Anubis is that an incredibly Anime/Manga subject for a photo! :p, brilliant shot man but how come the lines are so 'jaggy'?
(Need to turn your Anti-Aliasing up to 16x dude! :p)

Yeah, I was playing with a new lens/filter combo utilizing the same lighting, kinda makes it all look a bit odd doesn't it?

Not sure if I'll be using the same setup again in the future - not that pleased with the results.

Anyways, here's this evening's pics (especially for you Hursty ;)):

hehehe yeah that would probably fix it. but IMHO wouldnt that defeat the purpose of toy photography? i could imagine using photoshop for cleaning up dust or smudges from a shot or having your own signature on the photo but not really editing the whole image as a whole, cos i believe toy photography is making different composition using natural light or artificial and playing with angles, surroundings and camera settings to make a story or set a mood of your subject?

IMHO, using photoshop or any photo editing software is cheating... I have yet to use it on any of my pics - my preference is to push the boundaries of what I can do with the camera without resorting to digital editing.

I was merely stating that if Hursty thought the original pic was awesome, then he would probably love it even more if it was photoshopped.

Thanks! It is a really cool looking figure, although I've got no idea how to transform it because I bought it as is from dirge for $7, hah.

@Liegeprime: Must... Bite... Tongue..., So... Much... Innuendo! :D
@UltraMarginal: That is an awesome shot man, it immediately reminded me of the scene where Demolishor throws his arms up and takes out that bridge! :D
@Jena: Wow! - Your choice of scenery is consistently effective dude, the texture of the sand in the foreground does wonders for this shot. ;)
