Over time there's been a bit of talk about the Pokémon games in the The Computer/Console Gaming Thread (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=6214) and there's several of us who are fans, and a couple that are true Pokémon Masters.

But sometimes the news of special release Pokémon get lost, so I thought, with a new game about to be released, why not just make a new thread and let us Pokéfans discuss it here.

(This includes discussion of the cartoon, or card game or whatever else)

My Pokéstory

I watched some of the original cartoon series back in my Uni days and I eventually purchased Pokémon Yellow and found I loved it more than I had expected to. A few years later I purchased Silver but after getting stuck at the Elite Four and I put it down and never finished it.

Many years later when I bought a DS (I jumped from the original GameBoy to the DSLite without any of the consoles in between) I picked up Diamond and was blown away with the graphics upgrade and how much I still enjoyed the game's mechanics.

I purchased HeartGold since I already owned Silver, and I'm determined to eventually finish it this time. (Thanks to the advice, people I will try the Dragon Trainer again soon).

Black or White

I've been looking at the Pokémon available in Black and in White character lists and it seems that differences mostly cover types from the earlier generations. From the newest generation you only miss out of 9 types, 7 of which are from three different evolution cycles. So not a huge loss.

I think I am going to choose Black because I like the look of those Pokémon more and Black apparently has more "rotation battles" and they look more interesting to me than the 3 on 3 ones.

But I suspect I wont be playing Black for a while since I still have so much of HeartGold to finish. :o

If only it were easier to direct trade on Pokemon, Sleeve and I tried for a while to get trades going, but could never get friend codes to work, and the GTS is just pure lottery luck, otherwise I'd send you some team members Paulbot to get you over this Gold/Silver hump you have.

I'd also be able to send Sleeve a shiny dog to get Zoaroark, since I nabbed two sets myself, so if anyone has any great ideas/schemes to get direct trades running smoothly I'd love to hear/read it.

Sweet. My Dark team just won't be complete without Zorua/Zoroark. Actually I think the only ones I'm missing are Spiritomb and Sableye. Looking forward to getting a Hydreigon (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Hydreigon_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29). :D

I'm hoping that they've refined the GTS for Black/White when it comes to direct friend trading. I know they've brought in the ability for 'live trade' with a random on the GTS, and you can go in with three Pokemon and negotiate a little, but trading with someone on your friend list would just be so much simpler. That was just painful what we went through, Trunksie. And only being able to search for Pokemon you've 'seen' kind of defeated the purpose of being able to find ones you're missing, especially from earlier games.

Guess we'll have to try the SS/HG trade option with direct friend codes again, seeing as how long it'll take for us to both get Black, play through to where I can upload the dogs to my game in order to be traded online?

Or I could just trade you a Zoaroak? (And possibly a Sableye, pretty sure I have one somewhere, never got a Spiritomb, too much hard work, but maybe I can nab one from the pokewalker when I get enough steps.)

More fun times with trading, with the 3 monkeys too, hadn't really thought about that before. :rolleyes:

I forgot Spiritomb was in the Pokewalker. I used that for one day while at work (a lot of walking was involved) and never used it again. Got a Kangaskhan out of it. :rolleyes:

I'm really looking forward to playing for over 30 hours and only encountering all new characters. It really will feel like a whole new experience as opposed to trading over favourites from previous versions immediately, powering through the game and just disregarding the joy of it all as I hurry to complete it.

No rush on the trades either, folks. But thank you for the offers. Once I can trade I'll have a lot of transferring to do between my Diamond and SoulSilver games with my second DS. We'll get there eventually. :p

Inspired by your comments I played HeartGold last night and had a few more attempts at defeating Clair, the Dragon-type trainer.

Funnily enough I don't have much trouble defeating her two Dragonair (My Gyarados L35 and Stantler L37 are powerful to defeat them) or her Gyarados (My Mareep L36 knocks it out), but the Pokemon are weakened a bit.

But then I fight her Kingdra and it all goes to hell. It attacks first each time with either Dragon Pulse and Hydro Pump and each of my Pokemon, including my most powerful Grass-type, is defeated in either one hit or two while doing minimal damage.

Do I look to level up my Ice type Pokemon? The only one I have is a Swinub L23 (with Powder Snow, Mud-Slap, Endure, Mud Bomb) that Clair's Gyarados knocked out with one hit! Or should I go for more Dragon type moves?

Get some dragon type moves.
Kingdra is only weak to dragon. The water protects it from the ice moves, and the dragon protects it from water's weaknesses.

Try a move like thunderwave first up to impare it. It isn't a sure thing but it increases your chances.

Also, both hydro pump and dragon pulse have 10pp. That means at most you will have to last 20 moves before it will resort to lesser moves.
Try out lasting it with moves like protect and substitute or with potions and revives.

Picked up 'Black' this morning. :D

As expected I chose Tepig as my starter, and I've also caught a Lillipup and Patrat. Lillipup's face is hilariously adorable. Now on my way to the first gym.

I'm already overcome with the joy of a whole new game. It's like picking up Blue all those years ago.

If you are still struggling go try and catch the legendary dogs, they are at level 40, and a thunderwave helps slow them right down for damage dealing, but it takes a long and annoying amount of time. I'd go for Suicune and Raikou first.

If you get a dog, then their ability pressure doubles PP use.

Sad to say you really need to level your Pokes up to at least level 40, Ampharos and Stantler are good picks, dont bother with a Swinub/Piloswine evolve. If you can catch a Dragonair of your own, thats about the best way to get Dragon moves.

Thunder wave, toxic, protect, substitute and healing potions look to be the best way to go...

I managed to defeat Clair without needing to catch any more Pokemon or spend time leveling up :D

I was able to defeat the Kingdra stumbling block with Gyarados. For ever two moves Kingdra made I was able to use a hyper potion and a Twister attack, and while it took a while, and many potions, I eventually prevailed!

And I still don't have a gym badge! Dragon Den? :o Sigh! But I got past that gym at least! :)

Got Black from Big W for $47

Started with Oshawott. The starters were uninspiring. I only picked him because I have picked the water starter every game since the original Red.

I am up to the first gym. Really dissapointed in the lack of variety so far.
I only have 5 pokemon before the first gym, and 2 of them were given to me for free.
To make it worse, 2 are normal and 1 is dark.
Apparently there is some more I can get if I find shaking grass, but even then it is normal as well.

I remember in the other games you have had encountered at least a dozen verious pokemon before the first gym, and there were more variety type wise

I don't thin you ever really got more than 4-6 choices before the first gym, the first gym was always your starter and 1-2 strong normal/flying types.

Just checked Serebii's pokeEarth pages, and this is the info I ascertained...

R/B/Y: Rattata, Pidgey, Nidoran's, Mankey, Caterpie/Weedle
HG/SS: Rattata, Sentret, Pidgey, Spearow, Hoothoot ,Caterpie/Weedle, Ledyba/Spinarak
R/S/E: Poochyena, Zigzagoon, Wurmple, Seedot/Lotad, Ralts, Wingull, Taillow
D/P/Plat: Bidoof, Starly, shinx, Kricketot, Abra

So only really 7 or so Pokes at the first gym, and then it opens up a bit more from there (usually with Zubat, Geodude and whatever gens cave dwellers.

I had kids ranting to me today about how the new Black and White pokemon are "crap" and the first 150 are better! Hilarious considering that the Pokemon they prefer are double their own age! :p

Caught Victini and am about to go for my third Badge.

Still haven't settled on a regular team yet. Usually by now I'd have my mainstays but I keep chopping and changing, and even my starter (now Pignite) isn't getting much use. Having to anticipate the need for HMs is affeecting it too.

I went with the crowd and picked Black tonight, getting it for free for trading two games at JB. Like k.wong I'll be finishing HeartGold before I start playing it though.

Finally hunkered down and nabbed Latios in Silver to finish off getting all the legendaries available for now (got to get another Grouden, Kyogre and Rayquaza once I level up more in order to beat Red on Mt. Silver).

So will hopefully start Black sometime soonish.

Paulbot and K.Wong, at the very least open and play your Black versions for a few minutes (get the Pokedex) so you can get the event card for Victini before April via wifi.

There was also Geodude before the first gym in GSC.

But as you can see, there was a lot more variety in both numbers and elements. In bw you get 3 normals, a dark, your starter and one of the monkeys. 6 and 3 are the same type.

Now that you guys have mentioned it, I too noticed the slim difference between types early on, hell, usually there are Bug types within the first few steps, not the case in Black anyway. :confused:

I hate that Nintendo has no intention of putting out a firmware upgrade for any of the DSs to use modern, safer and better security protocols! :mad:

I just came out of Chargestone Cave and going to head for my sixth badge soon. Route 6 and Chargestone are perfect palces to level up the Fire starter.

I am LOVING this new generation, especially all the little tweaks they've done to the animations. I spent five minutes just Flying places last night so I could keep seeing it done, and every time I send out Emboar and the fat pig slams into the ground and sets off a dust cloud is plain old awesome.

I've picked up various shortcuts along the way, not to mention Audino in this game makes it whack!

I don't understand why it exists... You get given a lucky egg from the Professor right? Then you can just grind on Audinos (they pop up in grass when it rustles every 30 seconds or so) and youget like 3k experience a pop.

Lucky Eggs increase the amount of EXP gained.
Trading to older games and abusing higher areas there.
Finding high exp giving wild pokemon to battle.

In Black I find that Audino pokemon that only pops up with the grass shakes give lots of exp.
A Lvl 29 gave one of my pokemon just under 3000exp (it was holding a lucky eg, but that is still a lot for a lvl 29 pokemon)
I trained my Litwik up to lvl 41 with them because they only knew normal moves and they don't effect ghost

Chandelure sucks man... It's really unfortunate too, it has such a huge special attack stat :(

It only has to get through the elite four.
Plus hopefully 10 levels higher than them should do enough

Still have yet to start either game, but from looking at Serebii it seems to be a constant thing, the new pokes have super high attack/special attack but then have terrible speed or HP.

The 3 starters are all awful when it comes to their movepools, unless of course you like having monotype movepools. At least TM's are not one use each anymore, so that helps vary up the movepools.

Anyone got Zebrika? What are the thoughts or opinions? An electric Zebra just seems awesome to me, but an electric spider is pretty nice too...

I've got to say, the evolved forms of both these Pokemon look way cooler but it certainly is a nice change of pace from Electric Rodents. :p

I think Black and White E4 are meant to be about level 45-50, which correlates well with the earlier gens, and also isn't too much of a leap from the final gym.

However I do remember reading that some trainers post game end have level 75+ pokemon to battle, something that the HG/SS games really missed after post story trainers were introduced in D/P/Pt

Zebstrika has bugger all defence. Exceptional speed, but just too damn useless against physical attacks. I've gone into battle against lower level Normals and fainted within one move.

They're about 45-50 in this game. Normally they're about 60-70 (possible spoilers?)

Used him as a step in fire/electric hitter until I could get Galvantula(who is awesome and rocks) and Beartic(so-so). Along with Krookodile, who is easily one of the best 5th gen pokemon especially with his ability to kill and get better and killing stuff (Y).
He's fast as, but not so strong...

Also, the starters move pools aren't so bad... Rofl, who am I kidding?

...Well, you can always use Serperior as a sub-seeder...

Thanks for the heads up of the electric Zebra, maybe a slot filler for early on will be all it is good for.

Already decided that the Krok would be in my party the moment I saw it, the fact it can use the ever useful EQ and rock moves (as well as Crunch) is just a massive bonus.

I know sub seed is about all Serperior is good for, yet I know I'll still pick Snivy as my White Starter, I just cannot help myself picking the grass starters.

Now to figure out a good flying type to have access to for the elite 4, since they seem to counter one another (until the typical Dragon trainer)

I went without a flying pokemon, which means I was just EQing... Probably not the best strategy, but it worked.

Also, your monkey can learn acrobatics, which is a flying move (Y)

Honestly, the first grass starter I ever chose was Turtwig, and I loved it.
Also, I'm sure you know but Krook can also learn Outrage (Y)
He is a machine, especially with Moxie.

Well, just completed my first play-through Black and I've got to say - I quite enjoyed it. :cool:
Cheers for the heads up on the Elite 4's Pokemon lvls guys, it helped out a lot - Especially when having a guide (courtesy of Serebii) as to which Trainer had what types. ;):rolleyes:
Mind you, Ghetsis almost owned me as I've no idea on what counters what any more (Beyond the obvious like Electric beats Water :p) but good old lvl 70 Emboar saved the day! :eek::o

Now to finish off the loose ends I've left, venture into the newly opened areas, lvl-up and edit my party before taking on the Elite 4 again and completing the National-Dex... Starting tomorrow. :D:cool:

Yeah I couldn't quite make sense of it either, at least the previous versions had you purely go to the right section of a Pokemon centre. :rolleyes:

Fire Pig has pretty much been essential in this game. A Fire/Fighting with a Dark attack? Brilliant for right up to where I am now (finished Dragonspiral Tower).

Not just ingame either, the metagame is crawling with fighting types, perhaps as a way of making the psychic type somewhat relevant again? (hello Gengar's with Psychic on them coming back!)

Never been a huge fighting type fan, other than Blaziken/Infernape and Heracross with Brick break and Starraptor's Brave Bird, cannot say I really use the type.

Will hopefully start white with Tepig, that way I can still maintain that Snivy was my first starter! :D

They do if your chosen Pokemon is able to withstand what essentially equates to a 3 stage battle or 1v3 type of scenario. :o

Ah ok - Yeah this is the first I've used my DS using the WFC, well, and have it work anyway. :p
So far, I utilised the function 4-5 times now and yeah, apart from a slight little stutter in the FPS, that was it. :D

D/P/P and HG/SS has terrible issues with the GTS. Trunksie and I would try for hours to trade and never be successful. It would also send the invite to trade and we could 'see' each other, but it would never complete the connection.

Just got to the Dreamworld in White, nabbed me a Tepig, I figure then I get my grass fix with the monkey before the first gym.

So strange to have all new pokemon, that still feel eerily similar to the old ones (so far). I've got my my 4 mains for the first gym, and a bonus 2 Lillipups purely for pickup, been raking in the potions and ultra balls thus far!

I'm not too sure why you would evolve them anyway?
Their pickup is only good for the first few gyms when you can actually use potions haha!
A 100 Linoone on the other hand, is awesome!

It took me alot of grinding to get to lvl 20 ish for my 5 main team members, not sure how the exp split works thus far, I had my Timburr in the lead, and I would then switch it out for Blitzle when facing any flying/water types, and Timburr would get about 10% more exp...

All the grinding so early on (with most pokemon giving only 100-140 exp) was very annoying and stopped the flow of the game, Throh gives off alot more, but only the weak bird has super effective moves to fight it with!

Did anyone else struggle to find more than 1 or 2 Audino's by the second badge, because that is all I've seen. There have been plenty of pokemon heads popping up in the water where I cannot reach them yet, but no shaking grass...

Just keep running backwards and forth.
Also, exp gain is based on your level vs the opponents in this game (as opposed to enemies giving set exp when you totally murder the crap out of them in previous games)

Keep forgetting to go and find the other two monkeys in the forest. The grass never shook for me.

I made sure with this game I didn't use my AR to get 900 Master Balls, and actually go back to using skill and patience to get everyone. Cobalion was a b****, but it gave me the rush I hadn't had in years when I finally caught him after throwing countless Great and Ultra balls with a sustained state of Paralysis and Sleep.

One thing I've noticed I really miss from HG/SS is how your lead Pokemon walks behind you. A shame they got rid of that feature. :(

Caught all of the pokemon available to catch thus far, my team is still not looking like settling down anytime soon, and I'm about to face the 4th gym. Not even sure that The starter will stay, its either the fire pig and Soloisis (?) or Victini and Timburr, with no-other members likely to be long term (Blitzle, monkeys, Sigilyph etc).

Really enjoying the game, there is still lots of grinding, and could always do with more trainers to get more exp (really dont like the new system) but it's all new and very enjoyable learning and guessing as I go along.

For Cryogonal, grab a level 31 pokemon and a bunch of repels.
Go into the mine/cave where he is, put the 31 at front of your party and use repels.
After about 5 minutes you should have found one (there is also level 31 boldores, and youll see a ton of them haha)

I can breed the others for you if you'd like (I can lend Thundurus to get Landorus, I don't have a Zekrom though...)

I got black version the day it came out, i've put alot of hours into it already, but i'm taking my time so i'm only 5 badges in

my team are all around level 29 and consists of (Dewott, Boldore, Pansage, Arken, Sawk and Drillbur with Vanilitte and Zebstrika as spares for when i need differant types

my pokedex is currently seen: 79 own: 60

In my opinion Game Freak have gone a little overboard with trying to make the game look pretty

Finally finished Grinding all my currently captured pokemon up to a minimum of lvl35, all evolved where applicable and both my Main and (Unova) Legendary parties are lvled up to a minimum of lvl70 - Time to go and explore the North East of Unova. :)

Finished up to Dragon Spiral Tower, as soon as I got Surf I went off and surfed everywhere I could. Having the game in Winter is really annoying right now, as it means I cannot get the Dragon in Iccirus city. I'm off to hunt for an Axew instead.

Finished the Global Link game on pokemon.com to score myself a Dream World Espeon with the hidden ability, Magic Bounce. Word to the wise - don't collect the tokens of the others -eons if you can help it. Your prize is determined by the amount of each type you collect, and unfortunately the first two levels are full of Fire, Water and Electric tokens. I was lucky to score Espeon on the first go.

I signed up at the Pokemon Trainer Club a couple of weeks ago in preparation of the PGL Servers going live and today after a couple of frustrating issues, namely being told that my Game Sync ID was incorrectly entered - Stupid Y looking like a V on the DS Screen! :p, I managed to get my PTC account and my PGL account mated up with my Game Sync Code and Cartridge - Enabling full functionality of Pokemon Black! :D:cool:

I managed to win an Umbreon with that bloody Breakout game that has a few issues, namely the mouse becoming un-docked from the playing screen causing the paddle to freeze in it's place and the ball dropping past! :mad:
I've still not figured out how to acquire the Umbreon though so does anyone have any advice? :o

I tucked in that useless pink thing that is only good for lvling and managed to acquire myself a Mareep by playing a 'Find the Pokemon!' mini-game and finding the Pokemon literally on the last second! :eek:
I also made the silly mistake of filling up my garden beds with just Oran Berries :rolleyes:, is one able to send berries to the Dreamworld? or is it only the other way round? :o

Also, over the weekend I managed to borrow another DS from one of my Brother's mates and transferred, RE: Downloaded!?! :confused:, 103 Pokemon from my old Diamond game. :D:cool:

for some reason i cant use the dream world

i put my larvesta onto the pokemon global link
but when i try to access the dream world it says

"Processing registration data, Please wait before trying again, it may take five minutes or longer to complete the process"

and it's been saying that all day
accroding to the dw usage level it's quiet right now
and yet i cant use the dream world

anyone know whats going on?

Have you updated your contact list? (people who can see you)
Not sure if that has anything to do with the problem you are having, but apparently the default is set to "nobody", so maybe that has to be changed first?

It was doing that to me this afternoon, so I'd go back and check every 20 minutes or so to no avail. That was while it said it was a 'quiet time' too. I ended up going to class for five hours and when I got home tried again - BAM. I was in.

Given that today is the first day, I'd assume traffic is high and that indicator may not be so accurate.

Ah ok, fair enough - Yeah I just had a look at the faq on the PGL website and it basically says how to get it to the Dreamworld to meet it but it doesn't say anything about how or when, typical. :rolleyes:

It is probably because the Japanese have had access to the GL for longer than us. So they have a lot of the stats.

Well, I spent 15mins in the Dreamworld today and won myself a Nidoran! :eek::D

As a question though: If one wins one of the mini-games, do you have to make a wish on that run or can you build up a number of Pokemon over multiple runs and then make a wish in order to Befriend and send multiple Pokemon to your Entralink? :confused:

Well, I just did as you said dude but was unable to 'download' any more than 1 Pokemon before having to leave, which really sucks because I won a Lickitung, Tangela, Doduo, Poochyena and a Tadpond? - I ended up coming away with an Eggsecute and a Netball though. :D
(I have a feeling I mispelled a couple of names there :p)

What annoys me most is that the Tutorial videos suggest that one can have multiple Pokemon for 'download' at once - maybe this might change down the track though? :o

Yeah, I may have confused you. You can do multiple runs, but only take one Pokemon. How it worked out in my favour was that I could keep doing runs until I befriended someone I actually wanted to take.

I'm not bothering getting too many from the National Dex. For Black I've decided to just collect the Unova Dex, with the few exceptions of favourites like Houndoom and Luxray. I don't think I want to trade anyone from Diamond or SoulSilver because then I can't get them back.

Is anyone with White able to trade me a Rufflet for my Vullaby? Unfortunately the GTS is still bulls***ly restricted to only being able to search for Pokemon you've seen, and there are no trainers with a Rufflet in Black. I could go for Braviary, but the trade conditions people set for him are ridiculous. Actually the trade conditions for everyone are frakking ridiculous. I chose Lickitung just so I can check out his apparently new Evolved form, of which I never knew existed :p, plus I also came away with both a Net and Nest ball again as well as a Super Potion. :)

That's pretty much it. Just keep doing that, and also making more Dream Pals. The more of it you do the more Dream Points you earn, and once you earn a certain amount it will unlock new Pokemon to appear and also new areas to explore.

I was wondering how one accrued those points, but I hate games that force you to add friends in order to progress because it is purely left to chance that anyone will even accept the request, it's like Facebook games all over again. :rolleyes:

I was just about to Befriend a Nidoran (Female) when I was suddenly kicked from the server and a message was displayed stating that Server Maintenance for the Australian servers is currently taking place (3:00pm EST on Tuesdays, apparently :confused::mad:) - So now I believe all the progress that I had made during that session has literally gone to waste! :mad:

I've since sent a support question to the relevant body to try and discern whether the progress I had made would be saved and if not?, could I be compensated with the Pokemon I was going to befriend? :o

What has mostly got me annoyed is purely the fact that at no time was I informed, anywhere, as to the service and maintenance times of the Australian servers until I had been kicked from them - Just seems like a massive waste of time and effort. :mad:

So got onto dream world last night for the first time.

Got me a Taillow, but have not gotten it back in my game to find out it's ability.

Tried to go back on tonight, but servers were still down 5 hours after their scheduled start time!

Also very glad to have finished the main story of the game, nice to walk around and find Heracross, and other older gen pokes.

Finally started Black on Tuesday after finishing White, catching all the legendaries and breeding myself some starters and whatnot for Black.

On the fly trading is very nice, except you have to be 3 feet apart for it to work. The "updated" trading system is annoying, you now have to pick up to 3 pokes for "selection/viewing" then you and your trading buddy get to pick only one of the three to trade. It is a needless extra step.

And was it just me or was catching Thundorous (the roamer) really easy this game compared to HG/SS and even D/P/Plat?

Just make sue they are over level 50 to give yourself a decent chance. Black and White's elite 4 can be very tough to beat, they cover their type weaknesses fairly well...

Partially. I found the elite four to be stronger and smarter than I expected, mostly because none of the gym leaders were all that tough or battled too intelligently (using ineffective moves etc).

The types used in the elite 4 in B&W was not the best selection, I think Pearl and Diamond had a better mix, especially the second time through.

It does not appear that you can trade wonder cards from game to game, you can only get them via wifi download from ninty or retailers.

The only option is to trade the wonder card pokemon from other games, unless AR or other devices as such allow you to "get" the cards.

Im not even sure that you can request the wonder card versions of pokemon on the GTS or anything. Sorry.

I need a wifi connection and my laptop but I have hosted wondercards before (for DPPt not B/W though, if that is what you were after) so it shouldn't be too hard!

I'm pretty sure HG/SS is quite easy as it was originally made for it.
You don't edit the save you just trick your ds game (by making your ds connect into your network) into thinking that there is a wondercard hot spot near you by sending out the signal over wifi.

Interesting, I have the wondercard data for the semi-recent HG/SS legendary Dogs event that I found online. I dont need them as I got them from the actal event, but it would be cool if I ever buy a copy of Gold to go with silver to get them onto it. Thanks for the heads up.

It knows 3 Fire attacks and an Electric attack, all of them 100+ power. Comes at level 50 but other than that nothing else special.
