Whats up, i have just found this site by chance thanks to KillinSpoon and some transformers i am selling on ebay. Well ive been a TF fan since the early 80's when as a kid growing up watched the show religiously every morning and begged my parents every time we went out to buy me a TF. I did manage to get a few back in the 80's but i was never able to convince them to splash out the big bucks (!) for Ultra Magnus who i desperately wanted, along with the constructicons.

In the 2000's i noticed reissues coming out at Toys R Us by chance one day and as soon as i saw Ultra Magnus i snapped him up and that got me back into collecting. I tried mainly for G1 reissues and original loose G1's for my collection but would pick up any i liked. Which brings me to now when i am selling most of my collection to help me move. I will be holding onto my G1 reissues, masterpiece's and a couple of other fav's which will form the backbone of my new and improved collection (muhahaha) that i intend on getting stuck into once i have settled into my new residence.

So basically i have been collecting TF for about 25 years on and off, i am now 29 and really i cant see today's toys getting close to the quality and coolness of those original TF's that i used to see lining every shop wall that i would go into. The joy of entering a newsagent and seeing a vast display of TF's for sale was a great time, and just doesn't happen these days. Robots that transform, have an awesome show, great comics, great packaging and some suspect movies from Michael Bay (who has no idea) what could be better. On the new movies, for crying out loud, listens to the fans and puts in devastator and makes an absolute joke of it, looked garbage. Original green devastator would have almost saved that movie. For the next one, Grimlock and Soundwave awesome battle could save the series but i wont get my hopes up. 1st movie had potential but that went out the window for RoTF and neither come close to the Original Motion Picture. The End.

In terms of overall engineering and construction, I'd say today's Transformers are better made than G1. Consider the following:

(1) Contemporary Transformers are far better articulated & pose-able than G1 Transformers.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/misc%20photo%20skits/th_WFCOP_sumo4.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/misc%20photo%20skits/jazz%20vs%20soundwave/th_jazz_soundwave_3.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/misc%20photo%20skits/Rodimus/th_animated_rodimus1.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/th_driftvsdrift_1.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/th_bumblebeevsbarricade.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/th_volcanobasebattle_02.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/Tae%20Kwon%20Leap%20Photocomic/th_taekwonleap17.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/th_grim_chase_acidstorm.jpg

(2) Contemporary Transformers are more durable than G1 Transformers. Just earlier this evening I was playing with RtS Special Ops Jazz at a playground where I had him hanging off a net at a height of about 1.65m... then this little girl bumped it and he fell smack on the floor below. The toy's still fine. If that'd been 1984 G1 Jazz I don't think it would've fared so well.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/misc%20photo%20skits/th_jazz_playland1.jpg

(3) Contemporary Transformers have more detailed sculpting and detailing. The idea of using stickers to add details seems crude by comparison.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/comparisons/Classicsverse/th_comparison_chugurg1_decep_starscream.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/comparisons/Classicsverse/th_comparison_chugurg1_jazz.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/comparisons/Classicsverse/th_comparison_chugurg1_mirag.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/comparisons/Classicsverse/th_comparison_chugurg1_bumblebee.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/comparisons/Classicsverse/th_comparison_chugurg1_ratchet.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/comparisons/Classicsverse/th_comparison_chugurg1_windcharger.jpg

Now I'm not saying that G1 toys are bad... they generally were very well engineered for their time. However HasTak have come a long way in the last 27 years.

The joy of entering a newsagent and seeing a vast display of TF's for sale was a great time, and just doesn't happen these days.
I personally never saw Transformers being sold in newsagents. Although newsagents were a vital source for me in obtaining TF comic books as I didn't discover comic book stores until the 1990s.

On the new movies, for crying out loud, listens to the fans and puts in devastator and makes an absolute joke of it, looked garbage. Original green devastator would have almost saved that movie.
I don't think having Devastator in complete green would look that good. IMO Devastator's Diaclone colours looked better and I prefer the more realistic and varied colours of ROTF Devastator. The more simian stance is something that occurred due to consideration to laws of physics. A robot that size and immense mass standing completely erect like a human would make it more cumbersome to stand and move - particularly with any ferocity for fighting.

My gripe with the Constructicons is:
+ No character development. They were treated like set pieces rather than characters.
+ Killed by off-screen human cannon. Yeah, I know it's plausible, but I would've liked to see the Autobots take him out.

1st movie had potential but that went out the window for RoTF and neither come close to the Original Motion Picture.
The original 1986 Transformers The Movie was a box office flop. While Transformer fans like us love it, general audiences didn't and critics gave it scathing reviews. Think of it this way - if you knew nothing about Transformers, Transformers The Movie is not a terribly engaging movie. One of the great things about the first live action movie was that anyone could get into it, and lot of people enjoyed it, not just Transformer fans.

I agree that ROTF was weaker than the first movie though. ROTF had some good moments, but also some bad moments... it was a rather "bipolar" movie jumping from hot and cold. Hopefully Dark of the Moon will be better (couldn't be possibly worse, right? :p)

@ Goktimus Prime, With the the reference to the toys from the 80's being better than nowadays i was referring to the time they were thought up not the quality of engineering. For example Transformers, Masters of the Universe, Robotech were all significantly better ideas/cooler than Pokemon, Dragonball and whatever other crap they come out with these days. Awesome pictures there.

I had no idea the 1986 movie was a box office flop, to a 5 year old at the time it was the biggest thing imaginable, i'd never bother with actual facts. :D
With DVD sales continuing for the last 10 or so years and the ongoing popularity of TFs it would continue to make money 3 decades later.

For the movie i wouldn't have Devastator completely green, there would be some purple too  But i think more in line with traditional colouring would make sense.

Thanks for the greetings everyone, when is the guy gonna come in and say Welcome aboard, the board?

As a toy concept Transformers wasn't initially that original. Hasbro originally took a bunch of unrelated Japanese transforming robot toys (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Pre-Transformer) and chucked them together under the banner of "Transformers." The Transformers mythos (originally devised by Marvel Comics) does make Transformers more distinct from other transforming robot franchises though IMO. :)

A lot of the movie Transformers' had colours that were nothing like their G1 colours anyway <shrug>

Hasbro have released G1 coloured variants of a lot of the movie toys if that kind of thing appeals to you. The G1 coloured movie Devastator toy (http://www.yahobby.com/products4/tf_movie_2_ez_devastator_a.jpg) is a Toys R Us exclusive. :)

Just spent about an hour checking out your collection Goktimus, quite impressive. I ave a friend with something similar but it filled a garage and contained other stuff like masters of the universe, biggest comic collection i have ever seen as well. I dont think he visits the forums but ill try and let him know to see if he can post up some pics. Think of the ferraris you could have brought instead , must have cost you a fair mint.

Also that devastator is quite tempting, lucky im not near a TRU atm.

Welcome aboard, the board!

there I said it. :D

one of these days I'm going to have a cool welcoming picture like some of these other guys. but at the moment you'll have to do with my dediocre humour.

sorry I'm late, looks like I missed out on some deep discussion.

While I agree that the new transformers designs are far superior in engineering to the earlier toys. I find that the earlier toys, even though much simpler and blocky, have some really nice stylings and proportions that are not always captured in modern toys.

a good example would be Starscream G1 vs Starscream Movie. the G1 toy model was very lean but looked built, I think it is very well represented in the masterpiece starscream..

anyway, look forward to seeing your collection when you finish moving. not that I can talk I'm still yet to post any significant pictures of mine.

Cheers

UM

I don't know if I could get a Ferrari with that money... I've been collecting Transformers continuously since 1984, so most of my collection has been purchased just from local stores like Kmart, Target, Big W, Toyworld (which no longer exists in NSW, but it did in the 80s!) etc. -- which made TF collecting relatively cheaper than say buying vintage toys today. For example the first Constructicon toy I got was Long Haul which I got in 1985 for about $7 iirc... I remember thinking it was a pretty expensive carded toy considering that the mini Autobots were like $2-3 each. There's a MOSC Long Haul going on eBay here (http://cgi.ebay.com/Vtg-1984-Transformers-Decepticon-Gen-1-Constructicon-/160519653421?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item255fb7882d) for US$199.99!! :o So yeah, I find that I can save a lot of money just by buying Transformers when they're current from local stores rather than waiting for them to become "vintage" then paying inflated aftermarket prices for them.

All of my uncles, aunts and parents' friends knew that I loved Transformers, so Transformers was a staple gift for birthdays and Xmases. And the same applied for my brother, who lost interest in Transformers after G1 finished, so his collection got absorbed into mine :) (but I still consider them my childhood toys since I grew up playing with them) e.g.
+ MISB Skywarp: Xmas 1984
+ MISB Blue Streak: bday 1985
+ MISB Optimus Prime: brother's bday 1985
+ MISB Blaster: Xmas 1985
+ MISB Ramjet, Hot Rod, Hot Spot & Starscream: bday 1986
+ MISB Apeface & Snapdragon: Xmas 1987
+ MISB Thunderwing: brother's bday 1989
+ MOSC Bludgeon, Octopunch & Stranglehold: Xmas 1989
...and so on. And of course my brother and I would be collecting Transformers in between bdays and xmases (it's just that bdays and Xmases was when we got lots in single hits! :D)

Awesome photo, there was a pic of me in the local paper about 1990 with a few of my TF's i should see if i can find that somewhere. I think mum has it actually. I got OP for xmas or bday when he came out, every xmas i used to wish on xmas eve that i would wake up in the moring and my top bunk would be covered in transformers. Never happened for some reason

I lost all interest through my teenage years but the Reissues got me right back into it, could not believe it when i saw them in the store. I prefer to make my purchases like that as well, just around the local stores, i'm not really looking for anything i cant buy new. IN reference to the newsagents stocking TF's back in the 80's i lived in a small country town so it was really the only place that would have them and they did, also remember the local newsagent at my Grandmothers town had a whole wall with TF's and i had to be dragged out of there.

I just gave your collection a once over at lunch time but i plan on revisiting and ogling at it for a fair amount of time tonight. You should have been on the collectors or something!

Welcome!

IMO G1 toys will always hold a special place- I don't think any other TF line should or can be compared to it. 1984/85 bots are my favorites.

If you are into g1 reissues- have you checked out the Encore line?- Asian release in 2008/09. There were some new G1 reissues such as Omega Supreme, Sky lynx, Metroplex, etc and the boxes are much more G1 like.

Having said that, while I agree Bayverse TFs are crap, don't dismiss newer TF lines so quickly- you might want to check out the Classics/Henkei/Generations/United toys if you haven't already. They are re-imaginings of the g1 characters and are awesome!

Here's some of mine:

But my pics are bad- so check out this thread that does those figures justice:

Of course there's also the masterpiece line to consider. :D

(Forgive me if you already know about these lines)

Enjoy your stay :)
