New details have emerged about the exclusive to MattyCollector.com Voltron Classics toy line:

I was able to ask one of the Mattel reps about the new Voltron Classics line. I learned that it is coming in about 5-6 months, each lion will be around $30 each, with diecast parts, spring actions, articulated figures that fit in each lion, sold on MattyCollector.com, and fully combined into Voltron is over 2-3 feet! Also, each will come with a part to build the blazing sword!

2-3ft Tall and Diecast!?! :eek::eek::eek:
I... Ho... WOW!

wow... thats impressive!

how does one buy from mattycollector anyways?

do you need a US address?

do you need to wake up ridiculous hours of the night and battle it out with other people around the world due to really low stock?

OMG!!! This and thundercats classics line...both have got me really tempted to branch out....

I am very tempted to collect at least this voltron fig!! But if this is from matty collector- I've heard BAD things about the white screen of death from MOTUClassics buyers.

If these voltron follow suit- should be scalped to high heaven- especially at a $30 pricetag and people will especially since people will be missing a certain lion/s to complete limbs.

Well, you don't need a US address.
But yes, you DO have to wake up at a ridiculous hour (3am at the moment) and battle it out with out people around the world.

SAdly my Toynami Masterpiece Voltron took a tumble off a shelf and one of the black Lion's legs shattered. This may go to replacing it in my heart.
Shame it's gonna cost almost $200 bucks to get and it may take a year.
Still. WOOO!!!

Man, that asking price sucks so much donkey-balls it's not funny :( - With the upcoming TF: Prime line being for sale around the same time as this, I think I know where my money will be going which is a shame as I really wanted to get this but my collecting priorities lay with Hasbro. :o

kurdt_the_goat

I see they probably scaled everything to the 3 3/4 figure size, but i would have preferred cheaper, smaller everything... 23" is just enormous! around 5cm taller than Fort Max. I guess they include the wings in the height, but still!

Wow, that's a bit much. Only if I win the lotto. Kind of crap that the smaller Lions are $35 each and the pilots are seperate. Geeeeeez!

Trailer Park Ninja
24th July 2011, 12:28 AM
On the fence with this, it's pretty expensive but it is one of the toys & cartoons I grew up with and would love to have it.

The price is a major deterrent but it is a collection that has limited scope. That is, after you've got the lions and pilots, that's pretty much it. I don't collect anything other than DCUC figures and specific Transformers lines e.g. Classics/Generations G1 Homages and Encore series.

kurdt_the_goat
25th July 2011, 01:02 AM
That's true, i can't remember anything except for the lions, their pilots and King Zarkon!

I've decided not to look at this again though, it's depressing me.
It looks awesome, at 23" and with all the nicely done figs, it would be a collection stand-out. I know why they do it as a subscription, but as a customer, a better option would have been offering it as a single product in one hit, with everything - and with one shipping cost.

As it stands, i think i will continue my years-long quest to find a cheap die-cast Toynami Voltron, all the while hoping Bandai get to releasing one in their Soul of Chogokin line.

Prowl
26th July 2011, 09:44 PM
Looks awesome but somewhat pricey. When I say awesome I mean I would sell my girlfriends body on Grey st to fund it's purchase. It would only be one night for her vs a lifetime of misery for me not getting it.

Then again after my latest parcel arrived & "the look"I was given I would probably end up with Voltrons sword impaled in my neck as I sleep :(.

I am currently fighting a war in my head as to whether I join Matty Collector and get all the Voltron figures. Cost is not an issue. I think maybe the fact that when you get older you are more conscious. Just like me deciding to not order a brand new FPV black series GT.

I currently own the crappy Toynami 25th anniversary set and the Lion Force and Vehicle Force Toynami robot vinyl collection.

Back to Matty Collector, whilst the total commitment is USD 290 plus joining given that theLions will be sent out progressively I wonder how much that will cost in the end.

looks like you dont really need to use the key as its just a solid square button that is being pushed which you could have easily done so using your finger instead...but...its up the ass never the less...wtf!..

the plastic also looks lightweight or hollow to me too. which is may be how they managed to come up with a way to support the full weight in the monster 23" combined mode!

man, thats a bit dissapointing...

Y'know what? I call BS on Mattel's whole "Biggest/Greatest Voltron ever" claim.
Trendmasters made a similar scale Voltron for the CGI show.
I'm not sure if it ever came out here (My aunt did tell me she saw a giant Yellow Lion at a toyworld around the same time, so it's possible) but I knew a bloke who had one. over 2ft tall, Each Lion had light-up eyes, and ridiculous amount of missiles and was capable of holding one of the horrible four inch Pilots they had out at the time. And I'm fairly certain the lion legs were chrome too.

I'm pretty sure it was under $100 US for the box set in 1999.

It was a real shame that Toynami in their time with Voltron never re-made the Vehicle Force. Toynami did make the Lion Force anniversary set for which I purchased.

As such, I always wanted a Vehicle Force but the quality was so dispersed wiht missing pieces and price was an issue.

However a couple of weeks ago on EBAY I found a pretty good Voltron Vehicle Force.

This Voltron did not have instructions or a box, however on the net, I found some website – "Angelfire" that had the old Voltron and some basic instructions.

As you can see from pictures from EBAY, this was filthy.

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/2371/voltronebay.jpg (http://img220.imageshack.us/i/voltronebay.jpg/)

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/1203/voltronebay2.jpg (http://img189.imageshack.us/i/voltronebay2.jpg/)

If they cleaned the thing there could have been more interest.

I asked the seller about this toy. The story was that this belonged to her brother and it sat in the bedroom closet for years. She advised that the right arm had a scratch when in fact the clip on the hand was broken. As such the hand wont lock in. To fix this, I took the relevant vehicle apart and removed the spring. I put some tape on the hand so that it locked into the vehicle.
I considered complaining, but this was a bargain at $160 given that age and condition. So I just shut up and gave her a good comment. You don’t see that many Voltrons in such good condition.

Anyway it arrived today and I set back cleaning this thing. It took ages. I used water and paper towels.

Here they are all disassembled.

It was a real shame that Toynami in their time with Voltron never re-made the Vehicle Force. Toynami did make the Lion Force anniversary set for which I purchased.
Toynami actually did make a Vehicle Voltron toy ... two, in fact. One was a vinyl figure, the other was a Shogun figure. However, neither of them were transformable.

Pity Toynami didn't make a Masterpiece Vehicle Voltron. I would have been all over that in a forkin' heartbeat.

Attentive cleaning is an understatement!!!!

Where there were grooves and dust form, I removed it. Then I lovingly dried it.

Really dumb of seller to not have cleaned it. The chrome is remarkably in top condition

Only other bummer are some tyres are cracking but that is expected of a toy this age. Does anyone know where I could possibly find replacement rubber tyres????

Since sub time I have been thinking about a second set of lions, no figures....

Would it help if I helped you Kurdt?

About year or so ago, I bought from Toyworld the Toynami Lion Voltron set.

It's been kept MIB until today.

I put the Voltron Lion Force together and its next to its big brother, the Matchbox Voltron Vehicle Force set.

Dust is not as issue as my hobby room is always closed, locked and sealed.

Mattycollector sent me an email to say that the first of the voltron figures were posted out the other day...

anyone else got this notification?

can anyone here who have bought from mattycollector in the past let me know how long it typically takes to arrive once posted?
normally im not too fussed and can wait ages for it to arrive if there is tracking details, but mattycollector said some BS about no tracking details for international parcels and they also buggered up my postal address...:(

just need an estimate on arrival time so i can file a report with my CC if the item takes unusually too long to arrive.

cheers,

I'd COMPLETELY forgot about the whole subscription.

No idea on how long postage will take, but your credit card provider generally gives you 3 months to dispute a transaction, so I wouldn't worry about shipping time, which at a max would be about 6 weeks.

I found that with the MOTU figures, it can be as short as 3 weeks and usually about 4 weeks from postage before they arrive. I'd assume it'd be the same for the Voltron.

I'd really like to see how they look Brut and Cat. Pics when arrived please!! :D

Sure thing.

I'm interested in the final product too. I will admit, I bought the sub more for the pilots than for yet another Lion Voltron.

But still, will be interesting to finally see how they compare to the other versions, and how well they hold up on their own, especially for the price.

Yes. It's not "complete" though as the music masters are lost (ARGH!!!), so the music on the CD had to be sourced from episodes of the series. As a result of this some tracks on the CD are presented in truncated form, hence my saying the soundtrack is not "complete".

Where did you get it?
Most likely from the Voltron.com webstore. They sell 'em for $10 a pop.

I haven't looked at the Voltron site in many years, but that would sense. :) Initially I thought it many of been a rarer item based on the price of the one on ebay I saw. But based on your description it certainly sounds like it's worth closer to $10 than $200...

Mine arrived today, literally just saw the package out back.

The lion is a LOT bigger than I was expecting. It's pretty damn nice.

I won't get around to opening either of the two tonight, but the lion certainly looks impressive, and I appear to have got a really nice Lance too. Paint apps look perfect, especially on the helmeted head, where I heard a few complain.

Only problem - I have no idea where I'm going to put just this one lion, let alone the whole fully built Voltron!!

It's...........huge.............

I definitely will.

Even after just one release, this has become my favourite line this year.

I wasn't expecting that.

I'm so happy I went for the sub. I only did that for the pilot figures, didn't really care about or want another lion Voltron.

Kup, if your friend paid by credit card, he can still dispute the February charges. He has three months to do that, generally.

Also, if anyone gets a set and doesnt want the Lance figure, I'll gladly buy it off them. Trying to work out a display I'm thinking of.

For anyone interested, this one cost just shy of $69.

I'm really hoping Mattel does a second run of the red lion.

They've done that for plenty of other toys on their site that sold out quickly, mainly MOTU. They even did a second run on the Legion Of Super-Heroes 12 pack, which is far more expensive than any lion set.

I'm incredibly happy I have mine, and don't have to worry about missing out. And of course, the free Sven more than makes up for subscription cost, which makes things easier for me anyway.

I don't know what to say. I hate scalpers as much as anyone. There's no way I'm parting with mine.

But I do genuinely hope they do a second run, because this is something that is worth the cost they're asking, IMO. Actually, if you break down the costs, I honestly think it's a pretty damn good deal. And I'd love to see everyone who wants one, to have a fair opportunity of getting it at a reasonable price (3 times the purchase price is far from reasonable to me, for a new item like this).

I'll post pics as soon as yellow gets here. And I'm going to show photos next to my RL cat, as she's a good comparison. ;)

I'll also be stating for each one what the cost was, so you guys have a better understanding of what's being charged, vs eBay prices. That way, at least you guys can hopefully get a track of what's a fair price, and what's a rip-off.

I expect that the next two are going to cost roughly the same as these first two, seeing as they're both the arm and leg again. Only difference I'd expect would be due to the exchange rate fluctuating.

And I hate seeing people say how others 'don't deserve it' because they didn't subscribe or missed out. If you want an investment, get a share portfolio. These are meant for the masses, and are too good to be kept rare/expensive.

I'm also still trying to find a good base body for the unhelmeted Lance head. I can't think of anything I like. Infinite Heroes seems the logical choice, but again, I can't think of anyone whose body sculpt would look alright with the 'civilian' Lance head.

Good sir, I would gladly buy said pilots off you. (It's frustrating me because I want another set of pilots for display purposes, or at least a second Lance. Yeah, I know, I should be happy with one).

And the blazing sword piece is actually included in the box with the pilot, along with a key, which is just.....well, it just is. You can use it as a stand for the pilot, as it has a peg on it. Not really all that practical though, as the key's pretty big.

But yeah. Without all 5 of the regular pilots, you'll have an incomplete blazing sword. It's good that you don't need the Sven, at least.

I can't really say much about how good or bad the sword is, seeing I only have one piece at this stage.

I reckon its such a limited run tight now because they weren't too sure how it owuld go. I'd be surprised if they never released them again.

So, if I read this correctly, no pilots = no sword at all, not even an unblazing sword? That would suck.

To be honest, the cost doesn't seem all that much considering the soze of each toy. I'd be up for it, if I had the cash spare. Heck, I probably spent more on my original vehicle force voltron a while back.

I think the new cartoon just finished its first season.

Mattel had a sweet looking Voltron based on the animated look at SDCC.

I hope that sees release somehow, but I'm not very confident.

Personally, I can't even watch the new cartoon. The animation is just that bad.

A friend of mine has kids who absolutely love it though. They also hate Thundercats.

Strange because they're complete opposites in terms of animation quality, but the kids love the one with the worse animation.

Here's my story, which is posted at the Matty Customer Service forum. See what happens.

Here's my full story, and is the exact text I put into the Matty thread.

==================================================
I received two emails from you guys today.

The text is copied below. Now, I only have one subscription with you guys, which is for Voltron. I was charged for yellow lion, and it has shipped. I haven't received it yet, but considering I'm in Australia, it's still within a normal postage timeframe.

This was the email, which I received two of: ''Hi (my name here),

Here's a friendly reminder that it's time for your club subscriptions from MattyCollector.com to automatically renew.

That means your card will be charged and you can look for your shipment to leave our warehouse in the next several days. We'll send a shipment confirmation email once it does so you know it's on its way.

Have questions? Just give us a call at 877-GO-MATTY or email us at MattyCollector.CS@digitalriver.com.

Thanks for being a MattyCollector.com customer!

Customer Service''

So considering yellow lion has only just gone out, what is this? I emailed asking that, to the email address stated.

Here's my text from that email: ''Hi, my name is (me), and my email is (my email address) ,
and my address is Australia.

I received two emails (both were the same, but I only have one
subscription with you guys, which is Voltron) stating that it was time
for my club subscriptions to renew.

It then said it'd be leaving the warehouse shortly after the charge.

Yet I don't know what this is.

My yellow lion set was paid for, and is on its way over to me. I haven't
received it yet, but red lion took 3 weeks, so it's still well within
timeframe.

So what is the charge now that you emailed me about?

I'm confused.

Clarification would be appreciated.

Thank you,

(Me)''

Nice and easy, right. You're going to be charging me, can you please just let me know what it is you're charging it for, and why the email was duplicated, as I only have a single subscription for Voltron.

This was their response: ''Dear (me),

Thank you for contacting the MattyCollector.com online store.

We apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, we are unable to
assist you with this issue at the MattyCollector.com online store.

Please contact customer support at:

Seriously? You can't tell me what you're charging me for?? What the hell?

And considering I bluntly stated I'm in Australia, why respond by telling me to call? I'm not incurring massive charges for me to call the US, not to mention the inconvenience of having to call at an inconvenient hour due to time zone differences.

If you can't tell me why you're charging me, what it's for, then you have NO business being in business.

I wasn't asking some highly detailed question. I can't see how this could be any more basic an enquiry.

I'm seriously not happy, and am considering cancelling and putting more money to non-Mattel products, and just quitting this Voltron subscription if this is the unprofessional business I'll have to deal with for the rest of the year.

Can you please explain the actions of this CS rep, and tell me just what the heck it is you're charging me for, and why is there a possibility of it happening twice?

And why such a stupid and inane response from your supposed customer service rep? How is that in any way acceptable, considering I blatantly said I'm Aussie, yet I'm told to call a phone number in the vain hope they are able to read?
========================================

In case it's not obvious, I'm incredibly pissed off right now.

It's not like I was asking for something difficult, like the exact chemical composition of each bit of plastic on each lion.

They're charging me, okay, so.....what are you charging me for?

Yet that simple question is apparently too difficult.

If you can't tell me what you're charging me for, don't be surprised that I'm pissed and liable to get even more pissed that you expect me to just blindly accept the charges.

Unbelievable.

Tho the 1800 number is a free call, I too would be pissed ata reply like that. Its as if they cant be bothered to look into your case and just give you some number to call.
Hope everything gets sorted. I have heard nothing but bad things about mattel and this voltron.. good thing I passed it up.

The 1800 number is only free for the US. International calls get charged at the international rate.

Alright, here we go.

Usual disclaimer about me being terrible at taking photos, and having a messy desk.

I've used the same Wheeljack for size comparison.

I've also used the same cat. She's loose but in fairly good condition, and for once, was able to sit still for more than 2 minutes.

Heh.

I have to admit, a large part of me is questioning whether or not I should keep them.

It's already a pain in the ass, and that's at 40% completion!

I think I may end up keeping the pilot and stand, and I don't know about the lions: sell them as I get them, wait and sell it all as a complete Voltron, or making an agreement with someone, that they'll purchase the lions as they arrive, and I just keep pilot and stand (and the pilots alternate head).

I think there are a lot of people with no interest in the pilots, so maybe I'll find someone.

This is a great line, but I just can't give it the display room it needs.

I know it's going to look amazing when complete. The lions by themselves look incredible. These sets are what we remember out childhood ones as being: awesome looking and huge.

But yeah, I'm starting to think that I just don't have the space for a two foot high Voltron.

I haven't made any decision yet (to be honest, I'm still not sure of the best way for me to sell them all in a fair, open, and honest manner).

My opinion is simply that: my opinion.

I make no claim to be the arbiter of good judgement (I have been watching horrible cheap shark movies all week. I love Action Masters. I liked the Cybertron series.).

Anyway, again, just to let people know. I got charged today for Pidge and green lion set.

Even though it's an arm, therefore one of the smallest lions, it was the most expensive so far, clocking in at $66.65AU.

This is due to the fluctuation of the Aussie dollar, of course. But still, interesting to keep in mind.

Blue lion arrived today.

No complaints. It all looks good.

I also received the subscription bonus figure: Sven. I was expecting him to be boxed like all the other pilots, but instead he's on a blister card, like a normal action figure. Looks great, and it makes for a nice presentation, but I imagine some will be annoyed the packaging doesn't match.

Just black lion to go, and then... well, then I have a tough decision to make!

I'm entertaining offers. It's hard to gauge with something like this.

On eBay US they've consistently being going between 510-630.

Also keep in mind that they only have local shipping. For a normal person to ship them from the US to here would be a few hundred dollars. I can't see it being possible at anything under $150 international, and I think even that would not be enough.

So you get the advantage of cheap shipping for them from me, as mine are obviously here in Brisbane.

All lions are MISB, in their mailer boxes. You also get the complete buildable blazing sword, which is an awesome looking piece.

I'm just keeping the pilots and stands.

I'd go with a courier to ship these, and I'd expect it to cost around $40-60. That's just a guess, it could be less. I haven't had much experience from couriers, but I used one last month on a heavier item and it was only $60.

So, weigh all that up, and if you're interested, send me a message/offer. :)

This set is beautiful. I just don't have the space for it. It is the ULTIMATE Voltron, and one which I doubt we'll see surpassed. When are we likely to get another Voltron toy anyway, let alone one of this size and quality.

This is a centrepiece of a Voltron/Mecha collection, and is a must-have.

It's also hard to find, Especially one that's already in the country (save yourself hundreds on shipping).

Whoever buys it, will be thrilled with it. I'm sure of that.

This is the Ultimate Voltron, and possibly even the last one.

Don't miss out on it. It's not going to drop in price either. And its only going to get rarer still as the few available are snapped up for hardcore fans. It's the Hot Toys of the Voltron world.

I'll have some pics up hopefully tonight. And yes, although I don't think it really needs to be said, it is bigger than my cat!!

I think (iirc) that the grey is meant to make it more accurate to the cartoon colours.

I think it just looks cheap. After seeing those colours and that short video of the spring loaded legs they set up before the ordering was out, I had made up my mind to avoid it.

The grey is there because it is cheap. It is clear that this is the case.

Hasbro has been using this for years and since Matty decided to cheapen out in their 'Collector grade' lines for the last year, they have been substituting whites and silvers for it just like Hasbro. Recently they decided that 'Snow' should be an ugly grey instead of white and that Uncle Sam is not longer Red, White and Blue but Red, Grey and Blue  The red and Blue are also that dull shade that Hasbro likes to use.

Clearly some paint colors are 'cheaper' than others in manufacturing.

They have to dye it to that color dude. The plastic does not magically become whatever color it's molded into. However I will agree that it is also crappy plastic. Recently Mattel decided to mold their MOTUC figures black and then paint over them because it was cheaper than molding the plastic into different colors.

Hasbro uses the same grey because it is cheaper than using a pristine silver. They also like to use that off-white grey instead of white for the same reason.

That's the way Capitalism works...

And yet I laugh when people say the market is able to cater for the needs of the consumers without any outside interference.

And politics rant over.

So I finally got my Black Lion today. and well, despite it's flaws, I love it. I love this thing. I love that it's a massive heavy brightly coloured piece of plastic. I made a little happy noise when i put it all together and pressed the chest piece for the automatic Head forming action. that was AWESOME.

but it does have it's flaws, it feels slightly cheap and it's ridiculously top heavy. (although if this was made of Diecast metal it would weigh a ton and if it fell off your shelf on to your head it would kill you.)
in combined mode the spring loaded gimmick is irritating and i feel that once the gears wears out it will be useless. Oh and the whole massive collect and connect blazing sword NOT being able to light even though that was promised us is more Mattel crap.

And I honestly can't in good conscience recommend it to the casual Mecha fan.
Seriously. spend your money on Super robot Chogokins rather that this. looking back i tink it cost me 500 dollars for it. that's insane.
This is for hardcore fans of Voltron and for people who still love Toys that are Toys for playing with.
I appreciate it as a "What If" sort of toy and think that if 5 year old Tallest unwrapped it on Christmas day in 1986 his head would explode, making the five ugly Voltron lions and their strange dumpy pilots from the 80s look like piles of puke.

So...yeah. I like it. I get why people don't. It's still awesome to have.
