if hasbro/takara later released a figure of a character that you already purchased from a 3rd party manufacturer (such as Fansproject)... would you still buy hasbro/takara's version?
let me know if i should be adding more options

Ermm.. Tough question.
Instantly I thought 'hell yes' but the more I think about it, I probably wouldn't buy them apart from the completionist in me.

I'm with you there - I'm a completist myself.

It depends on how good it is.
That being said, already having a similar figure isn't an issue. I treat a figure as if it will be the only one of that character I will have.
So it wouldn't really matter.

I understand that, but what if Hasbro/TT released an inferior classics Magnus(with armour), would you buy it? Knowing that you already have the bees knees of Magnus'(or is that Magnii?)?
Obviously if you don't have the sets you would grab them in a heartbeat.
I honestly don't know what I would do in this situation though. If I had a considerable amount of cash I would probably drop it and get him.
Though it is really situational as to whether I would pass or not. :/

an example could be the fansproject defender warbot vs Botcon/Classics springer.

For me personally, the Official HasTakTom Version would have to be significantly superior to the 3rd Party Release.

I'm not a character man, I'm a mold man.
So if its an entertaining mold I'll get it, character regardless.

I don't buy third party releases (and choose to ignore their existence) - what option do I select then?

Same here. I chose the first option. It's a very simple purchase decision for those of us who don't buy unlicensed toys. ;)

Yes, but the poll results would be askew since kristofferer is asking:

The emphasis being that you already own the third party product.

It is sort of like what SharkyMcShark said: if it is a new mould then I will treat it as if I didn't have the FP one.
If the mould is bad, then I will skip it. If it was good in its own right (but not as good as the FP one) then I would consider getting it.
I look at it as if they were from different series. So while I have ROTF Leader Optimus Prime, that wouldn't stop me getting DOTM Prime if I thought DOTM Prime was good enough on its own.
(For the record, I don't think it's good enough on its own, but its just an exampe)

This is an interesting one. I bought the Botcon first, as it was my only option at the time. I was happy to get the Universe one because I felt it was an improvement. Lastly, Defender came out and I got that.
If HasTak came out with a new, non-repaint Springer, it would have to suck pretty bad for me to not get it, and based on the last few generations of Classics designs, I don't think that's possible.

I prefer official over 3rd party. I only buy 3rd party accessories, not the figures but if HasTak released official pieces I'd get them.

I'd buy Hasbro over 3rd Party anytime
Mostly due to: price, availability and they are official
But I will get the standout 3rd Party items.

I probably would. But the HasTak Ultra Magnus and Springer better be phenomenal for me to replace my City Commander and Defender on the shelf.

This.
Having said that, I will buy what I want. This will be on a case-by-case basis.
Generally though, If the character is already 3rd partied and I have it, (i.e. City Commander),I would most likely get the Has/Tak if it is even half decent.
This will be due to authenticity, also price, and just to have MORE OF A GOOD THING. Nothing wrong with that. I can have 2 awesome yet different ultra magnii and I won't be complaining, especially where the HAs/Tak one costs much less. Yet the third party one offers something special and unique aswell.
This has already happened to me: i.e. PE rumble/Frenzy vs United one. I prefer the PE ones due to their scale and more cartoon accuracy to the united ones.. which are ok. I still ended up purchasing a united one just to have an official one.
This will also occur since I have bought the PE reflector- yet Has/Tak one will be perceptor remould/repaint. Now I havnt even seen the official one yet, but I already prefer the PE one due to proper homage to g1- alt mode/transformation and better SCALE with other classics. However, I will most likely get an official one ANYWAY since it will be cheap- and more of a good thing/awesome character.
However, if I had to prioritize, then it will be factors of cost/moulding/ tribute/ etc that I will have to consider case by case.
All ethical/legal considerations aside, I think 3rd parties are awesome- gives Has/Tak incentive to work harder for their releases and gives us collectors much more options. They are merely a complimentary avenue for us die hard collectors who want the character that Has/Tak has not yet made or most likely will not make or do properly (i.e. devastator, dinobots, reflector as a camera, Ultra Magnus with armor).
I think that the recent dirge of 3rd party releases based on the classics line really pushed that line's popularity. Between end of Henkei till generations, fans were still not fully on board for the classics line, but it is safe to say Generations boosted the popularity of the line by propounding the notion of a full cast that will realistically be available in classics form.
Although there is no empirical evidence, I don't doubt that the popularity of items such as City Commander had some influence on Hasbro to continue with a Generations line, and no doubt that the release of those 3rd party figures gave some collectors an incentive to collect the official classics lines.-Atleast ive seen some posts elsewhere where people have asserted as such.
[I can only cite the fact that the original classics line was meant to end as Hasbro stated- hence the Botcon Seeker Fiasco. Also if you look at the trend and demand for the classics stuff now compared to before, and how prices have soared due to increase demand it is a compelling point.]

I voted other as there are factors to consider.
However..
In a reverse scenario, I own both the official Botcon and Universe Springers which I bought before the 3rd party explosion but I wasn't satisfied with them as neither fully represented the character. After Hasbro made that silly remark that there was no need for a triple changing Springer because both those toys represent each of the alt modes, I was very annoyed. When FansProject Defender was announced, I was very happy because finally someone was giving me the figure that I wanted as Springer not just some 'make do' repaints.
So, if Defender had been released before the Hasbro Classic Springer repaints, I wouldn't have bothered with Hasbro's offering. On the other hand, if Hasbro does release a proper triple changing Springer, I would indeed buy it even if it's design is inferior to Defender. however that would not demean my perception of Defender in any way as I still think he is a fantastic toy and would be happy to own both.
