View Full Version : How do you want to watch DOTM: 3D or 2D?

The first time you see DOTM at the cinema, will you be watching it in 3D or will you opt for a 2D screening?
(sorry if discussion exists already)
I saw the teaser trailer (the Astronauts on the moon) in the cinema in 2D first then saw the 3D version. The 3D version looks effective but it's a movie gimmick I'm not won over by. The 2D version looked just as great to me.
I watched about half of a more recent US trailer in 2D at a cinema and with SO much happening on screen it convinced me: the movie will look good in 2D and probably easier to follow so that's my first preference.
I will leave the 3D experience for a second viewing. I believe that Bay shot this film in 3D so it does deserve to be seen that way (compared to the needless 3D upgrade to films like Thor).
The last option in the poll should be "watch it at all"

I LOLed at the actual last option. I imagined someone planning a walk out on the film before they even know if it's bad. :)

This is an easy one for me - 2D.
I can't watch 3D flicks - either at the cinema or at home on Blu-Ray.
I had to walk out of Avatar after about 20 minutes since watching it in 3D gave me a headache and I felt slightly nauseous. :(

I voted 2D.
I saw the teaser trailer in 3D with Thor last night, and while I thought that most of the 3d in that trailer was done exceptionally well, the final few seconds where the gears move rapidly across the screen, and where the film name 'transforms' did not look anywhere near as crisp.
After seeing how busy the second main trailer was in 2d, I feel that the 3D version may be hindered more than helped in the fast paced battle scenes.

2D. I personally think 3D is overrated and don't enjoy it as much as 2D (maybe in the future when they improve 3D technology, but atm it all looks blurry to me).
However if I were to receive a free ticket to watch the movie first in 3D, I wouldn't turn it down! :D Or if say we organised a fan meet to see it, and most people wanted to see it in 3D, then I'll go with that too. But my personal preference would be for 2D.

Kewl! I'm gonna go see Thor 3D this evening, so now I'm looking forward to seeing the TF teaser! :) But I'll stay and watch Thor too (unlike say Meet Joe Black where apparently lots of people bought tickets to see it only to watch the trailer for The Phantom Menace before walking out :p)

I voted 3D. If it was filmed that way then thats the way to see it. I'll have 2D on dvd so if i think I've missd something then I'll be able to rewatch.

Yep, Transformers would be worth nothing without the interesting and fun gimmicks that are included with the toys. On their own, transforming robots are just boring.
GoktimusPrime
15th May 2011, 03:32 PM
It depends... Transformers that are well engineered on their own can be enjoyed without extra gimmicks. And gimmicks are fine so long as it doesn't compromise the engineering and other factors of the toy.
Some toys are just fine without additional gimmicks (beyond transformation and weapons), e.g. 1984 Jazz. Other toys have gimmicks but are still great toys because the gimmick doesn't significantly compromise the design of the toy, e.g. Cybertron Downshift. Other toys suffer greatly because their design is sacrificed by the gimmick, e.g. Armada Scavenger.
For me, the movie viewing experience is 'compromised' by current 3D screening technology because often the image just looks blurry to me, or as i_amtrunks puts it, just not "crisp." And to me, the trade-off for 3D isn't worth it. But that's my personal preference.
I'm really hoping that 3D technology will improve in the future to make 3D images look sharper. Disneyland has 3D shows which look absolutely amazing (where you see (and feel) 3D characters fly about the theatre! :D)
LordCyrusOmega

It was a joke Gok. A lot of the time the gimmicks aren't really needed. Mech Alive and Rts come to mind.
The problem with 3D viewing is my eyes are given the illusion of depth perception and this gives me headaches when my eyes try to focus the blurry bits.
Those 3D movies at disneyland are a lot of fun, nothing like being shrunk down and sneezed on by a giant dog.

From the interviews he has given, I am getting the impression he has the same views as me when it comes to 3D: why make it 3D unless is makes sense and is done properly. From the wa he talked about it I can tell he is doing it to add to the visual experience rather than because it looks oober cool and shiz. And given the review of the 3D screening by the guy from way cool or something like that, I think the 3D will make dotm amazing

Erm Im going to be watching it at home with the comforts of all the free food I can eat and rewind option, oh and in normal DVD only, dont have blue ray. BUt since normal DVD isnt in the option, so Id say 2D.
3D gives me headaches and watching in the movie with those darn glasses makes me feel like watching thru binoculars as I already wear glasses, its so inconvenient to have to put 3D glasses on top of my normal seeing glasses. Did it with Alice in wonderland and had a headache after the movie due to eye strain.

2D for me. I like to watch my movies crisp, clear and with lots of detail. 3D movies have a crisp "pop-out" image, but the rest of the picture or background is blurry and dull, and you can not make out any detail. Why film in HD when half the picture is going to be behind a gimmicky 3D effect?

2d all the way.
3D at the moment, feels like a cheap hollywood gimmick to me, occasionally it adds depth to a scene, I felt it was done well in UP, fairly well in Avatar, but I had a great feeling of depth in the Phantom Menace when the star fighters flew out of the hangar on the cliff face and there was a top down view of the really deep valley, I actually got sweaty hands. There were no 3D glasses in that movie.
I normally wear glasses, so having to wear 3D glasses on top is a pain in the ears and on the bridge of my nose. Paying extra for a slight increase in picture depth, and 2 hours of discomfort just doesn't add up for me.
The biggest problem I'm probably going to have is if like Thor, TF3 is only relesed in 2D in a select few cinemas. then I'll just have to suck it up and watch it in 3D.

why can't you just take a pair and re-use it instead of paying $1 each time you watch a movie? Do this 3d glasses expire so it's one time use and off to the recycling bin?

You can reuse a pair as many times as you like. I'm still using the pair I got wen I saw Up nearly two years ago. They don't expire.
The recycling bin is for people that don't want to carry the glasses home, and helps the cinema out because next time the customer comes in they pay the extra dollar for another pair.
Even if you have a pair of glasses you still have to pay the $3 or so "surcharge" for a 3D movie.

DAMN IT!!
The Cine-Mask is tiny! It seems to be made for little kids, but there's nothing on the box indicating this. And of course, the TV ad shows adults wearing the Cine-Masks.
I tried to wear it first with my prescription glasses on, as I'll have to wear them while watching the movie -- the mask is so small it was squishing the glasses into my face. Prolonged wearing might warp my prescription glasses and/or my face! (goodness knows I can't afford to make it uglier...). So then I took my glasses off and tried to wear the mask without them... nup, still way too tight.
How the hell do they expect anyone over the age of 6 to be able to wear these things?!?!?? I hope Target will give me a refund or exchange for this as it's bugger all useless to me.
I was seriously looking forward to wearing this at every future 3D movie in the cinema too! <swear.words>

‘Transformers 3′: Most Incredible 3D Experience Since ‘Avatar’
http://screenrant.com/transformers-dark-moon-3d-preview-kofi-118150/
The short version of my report: Michael Bay has created the best 3D movie experience since Avatar - and may have even surpassed it.
Needless to say, Transformers 3 is going to have a lot of sick summer action. But is it worth a 3D ticket price?
Short answer: You don’t want to see this movie any other way.
Without spoiling a thing, there were 3D sequences in the preview that had me shooting right past goosebumps into ‘OMG’ territory. Some of what Michael Bay has constructed is just…impressive. His ambitious and often aggressive style for capturing action in motion maybe the perfect marriage for the 3D medium. The results of his innovative work are also proof (as a friend from UGO said on the way out of the screening) that ‘If you don’t shoot in 3D, you shouldn’t even bother.’ All these post-converted 3D films coming out this summer (Thor, Captain America) are likely going to look cheap by comparison.
The best part about it all is that the 3D technology Bay is employing brings the Transformers themselves to life in a way that none of his other films did. One of my first reactions after taking off the glasses was to say to myself, “Every one of these films should’ve looked like this.” The most common complaints about the Transformers movies’ visual effects (what few there were) included mention of the fact that the individual robots were hard to make out or distinguish, and that the CGI characters sometimes looked too fake when juxtaposed with their human counterparts. 3D, I am happy to report, eradicates most of these problems.
The effects in Dark of the Moon will be even more polished by the time the film hits theaters – but even now I can tell you that the 3D adds those elements of physical presence and weight that were missing from the earlier installments. It actually feels like there are giant robots moving around the screen, and they blend with the real humans and environments better than ever before. The 3D filming style also allows all the minute physical details of the robots – which Bay and the effects gurus at Industrial Light & Magic have pained over for years now – to literally standout and be noticed, helping to distinguish each and every robot (even the generic henchmen) in all their moving parts. They actually feel like real characters, and that is a much-needed improvement.
Ok my mind is made up 3D all the way!:D

Watching the sample clips in 3D at BotCon, I'll be watching it in 3D once only, just to see the difference. Every other viewing will be in 2D.
Why?
Well, both 3D glasses we were given (regular type of specs, and the TFs cinemask) obscured the overall view/line of sight. The regular specs sit away from the eyes and have the frames around the lenses, which really bugged me as it was in the line of sight, especially between the eyes - it's not easy to ignore (During scenes of 'wall-to-wall action on that big screen, I kept having to push them closer to my face to get as much of the obstruction out of the way).
The Cinemask also has black frames on the nose sides of each lense, but has an angled lense on the far edges which also created some distorted viewing (and presses really hard against the nose).
And neither are any good for people who wear glasses... as they both don't give enough room for your own glasses, without pushing the 3D glasses further away from your eyes, creating even more obstruction with the frames.
And to be honest, I wasn't that impressed about the 3D aspect anyway. After a couple of minutes, you don't even notice it being any different, as you're too busy taking in what is going on and looking at all the action and CG effects (which is difficult to do when the 3D glasses & masks are preventing a full line of sight of the entire screen.
Unless a movie tries to play up the 3D effect by intentionally aiming stuff at the camera (like in some of the early 3D movies), it's just a wasted (expensive) gimmick. And even then, only those scenes are the pay-off of that gimmick - but the entire movie has to be filmed and screened/viewed that way.
IMO short 'films' like on themepark rides, have been the best usage of 3D filming that I have seen so far (compared to full-length movies done in 3D).
(this opinion may change once I see the entire movie in both formats, but so far, I haven't been impressed enough to recommend it)
