Victoria Govt. to introduce $240 on-the-spot swearing fines (http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/05/31/3231331.htm).

The Victorian Government plans to introduce laws this week that will give police permanent power to issue on-the-spot fines to people who swear.

Under the proposed legislation, people could be fined close to $240 for language that is considered indecent or offensive.

Attorney-General Robert Clark says the changes mean police will not have to use the courts to deal with people who use bad language.

"We're going to be confirming the power of police to issue on-the-spot infringement notices for these sorts of offences, which will free up police resources," he said.

"It will also enable them to more effectively act against the sort of loud-mouthed, obnoxious behaviour that can make going out to public places unpleasant for other members of the public."
Thoughts/comments? Keep it clean, especially if you're Victorian...

Sadly that rules out my contribution.

I'd be happy with this law if they removed all the bad drivers first.

Article says that the laws are already there, but it just being changed to be 'on-the-spot' fine instead of a citation to appear in court on a later date (to save time and free up resources).
Why shouldn't people be confronted for inappropriate behaviour and language when around other people's kids or at a family-oriented places? They aren't being stopped from swearing completely, just being encouraged to keep it away from youngen's or others who don't want to hear it. I don't like hearing it, but if I was somewhere first, why should I be the one to move or have to stay and listen to a group of people using obscenities every second word or talking about vulgar adult content?

Be interesting to see how this works.

Personally I dislike hearing f and c, but sh** doesn't bother me, but if I had kids hanging around, I would object.

Looks like it could be a subjective situation.

+1 hope they don't make it $240 for every swear word. I remember the movie "Demolition Man" by Stallone/Snipes ;)

What about those with Tourette/Turret's?

Some person will always find offence to anything. To those I say take a tablespoon of concrete and harden the f*** up :p

But seriously though, I can understand having a law like this around when there are kids present, but when you are in a group of mates not bothering anyone, it silly.

I suspect this is mostly to discourage Victorians from swearing at the police, rather than just within audible range. Which I think is fair enough.

This is pure ridiculousness, all it is doing is taking away one's right to free speech and I'm not surprised considering the current Victorian State Government has also waved rules preventing them from submitting a law change that allows someone to discriminate based on Race, Religion, Sex and Marital Status!?!:mad:

Sure, it is 'Good Manners' to not swear around women or children and I think most people try to do this - But that's just it, it's a courtesy not a law and if you don't like your kids hearing profanity then cover their bloody ears.
(Some really do need a warm cup of 'Harden The F*** Up :D)

I'm sorry to hear that our Victorian members are, in less than a year, about to go backwards by 30 years. :(

Tech: Almost there, just one minor adjustment to go now!

*detector comes unstuck and falls to the ground*

Tech: Mother****! *realises the detector has just landed on the Barmans foot*

Barman: Fuuuuuuuuu---

Detector: Cannot...handle...amount...of swearing....Self destructing in T-minus 3,2,1...

*Ka-BOOOM*

Resident drunk: You've been Michael Bay'd b***h!

This is the same Liberal party that accused the Federal Government's Pre-Commitment Gambling reform of being "Big Brother, nanny state policy". Nice one.

They were only saying that becuse it would score them points. That's all they ever do.
Have you ever seen question time? The Speaker is like a parent trying to stop two groups of kids fighting. All they seem to do is take pot shots and yell at each other.

Are you serious?!
Are you F&$KING SERIOUS?
Of all the problems we have in the 21st century this is one of the proposed 'solutions"? How about instead of making money off people to fund flying K-Rudd all over the world at least make people do something USEFUL, like give back to the community by making them work at Meals on Wheels, clean up the mess left in cities after Saturday nights.

On a relevant note to the Government, who thought that whole Penny Wong 'meow' debacle was hilarious? The fact that it could of have been sexist wasn't what made it funny, but the fact that a grown man in Parliament sat there and just said 'meow'. LOL
