From Botcon's Twitter:
The 2012 BotCon Convention Set mock ups are done, and they are absolutely amazing! We have went all out...
And if you are an 80's fan, one character will be the MUST HAVE Transformer of the year!
Start saving... Attending or not, as a whole, this may be the best set we have ever done. Def in top 3 based on concept/mock ups
@mrlumptastic Top 3? 2006, 2011 and 2012... Other sets had good unique pieces, but maybe one feel flat here or there.
@mrlumptastic Really don't think there is a bad piece in the 2012 set. Every one of them would make a great stand alone piece.
Now for the hint(s)... Three are seeing their first updates ever, and what an update(s) it is!
For two of them, we have drawn upon the "distant" past... what that means will be known soon enough!
@GeneralTekno We are not doing TFA for 2012...
Trailbreaker, Gears and Brawn...
are NOT being done by us.
They need the good ol' Hasbro Classics treatment first and foremost... We'll take care of some of the other, equally awesome characters!
So let the speculation begin. Personally.......come oooooooooooon, Sludge! :D

I hope the trailbreaker, gears and brawn not being done by us comment is a hint to hasbro doing them next year

As awesome as Sludge would be, considering how they always re-use moulds, I think it unlikely.... Some other Dinobots could be cool. I am most intrigued... 'From the distant past...' Could mean Cybertron's distant past? Something related to War For Cybertron/ War Within era?
Cybertron mode Grimlock? Hmmmmm. Although he already had a Titanium update didn't he?

Anyones guess, they need to sell tickets :)
I believe from the grapevine LSOTW may get classics treatment as a set (springer, impactor etc).
I have also heard the following are scheduled for next year (just called to find out what it was):
Trailbreaker
Brawn
Gears
Hoist
Sunstrorm
Whirl
Stepper (Hasbro Version)
Artfire (Hasbro Version)
Targetmaster Classics (Scourge, Hot Rod, Kup, Blurr, Cyclonus)
My source could be lying, but considering how much in bed he is with Hasbro, I take his word on it :)

Where's my Deluxe sized Cosmos? Darnit, one day, if I keep thinking and wishing hard enough, it will come true.
If they make a LSOTW set, I hope the reissue Overlord!XD
Unlikely, but he's there with Cosmos!

Distant past for two figures?
Grimlock and Swoop right? Or could they mean in tf lore and be looking at earlier Primes (since Alpha Trion has been done before). If it is Dinobots, with what molds would they be made with?
Rotorstorm needs an update, and I doubt Hasbro could ignore how popular LSotW has been, but given that Springer, Perceptor, Ironfist and Guzzle have all had redecos made in the past few years (and Pyro), that would leave the Jumpstarters, Overlord and perhaps the minor Decepticon characters Snare and Stalker.... Still a set worth getting!
I guess the questions to be asked would be what molds are they limited to? The classics line seems to be the only option since the movie figures are largely no-gos.

Sludge from Darkmount. :p
How do you figure Swoop and Grimlock? I was throwing out Sludge because I WANT HIM SO BAD.

"distant past" could mean Beast Wars (it was set on prehistoric earth)
and if that's true then I cant wait to see what they make. possibly more pre earth bodies (Terroraur? Tarantulas? Depthcharge?)
but considering they already did dawn of futures past i doubt they're gonna do another beast wars set (that and dawn of futures past is from the future not the "distant past")
could be G1 Strika and other early transformers

Unless they do something different with Cyclonus, why do a Botcon exculsive Targetmaster? The regular release came with the targetmaster partner.

Really? would never have guessed.
I'd prefer two of Snarl, Sludge and Slag/whatever they could call him now.
Just thought that the continuing popularity of Grimlock and Swoop would see their use, plus that would give the set "named characters" so then lesser known or region exclusive or comic exclusive characters could be used for the other set members.

For some reason distant past makes me think of Orion Pax. They could reuse the Kup mold like they did with the Ehobby G1 reissue. He'd fit in great with Botcon Alpha Trion and TFCC Dion.
3 are getting their first updates ever. I'm thinking
Skids
Hoist (If they're not doing a Trailbreaker they must have access to the mold)
These guys instantly come to mind but there are others of course...

That Orion Pax idea is plausible.
Skids got an upddate (although not a good one) in the movie TF2, and Hoist was made from a repaint of a tow truck from the TF1, whose name currently escapes me.
not good updates though :p

The Orion Pax idea is very plausible as the cartoon has massive influence with Funpub and most US fans. However at the same time, they have been known to go beyong geewun and giving us some good stuff from the Marvel G1 universe.
