View Full Version : Repurposing your transformers

Firestorm

When I say "repurposing" I mean taking a transformer from 1 line (say animated Arcee) and dubbing it a different transformer in your collection (generations arcee)

I know quite a few people do it, so I'm wondering,

What figures have YOU repurposed as other lines/characters/etc?

Personally I treat all of my transformers as what they were on their box (except for things like trailCUTTER, darkmount etc)

I have Repurposed Movie scout Elita-One as my Classics Arcee, because screw what anyone says that is clearly Arcee, dammit.

Are we refering to say customising/ kitbashing them into different series or just plonking them there?

If we're refering to the latter I do. I have the following in my CHUG collection
Energon Omega Supreme
Cybertron Metroplex
Universe Devestator (The energon repaint one), Bruticus and Superion
Botcon Razorclaw
Universe SE Overkill and Dragstrip
ROTF Bludgeon
Musiclabel Soundwave
Energon Scorponok
Realgear Booster X10

Plus a couple of quintesson figures :)

I'm thinking Cybertron Quickmix suits as a hybrid between G1 Targetmasters Scoop and Quickmix, he also came with a minicon Targetmaster :)

I too have taken figures that were from other lines, have 3rd Party corrections or Officially repurposed and lumped them in with my Classicsverse figures, such as:

Energon - Superion Maximus (3rd Party/FansProject Corrected)
Energon - Bruticus Maximus (3rd Party/FansProject Corrected)
Reveal The Shield - Lugnut (Classicsverse Lugnut)
Reveal The Shield - Solar Storm Grappel (Classicsverse Grapple)
Reveal The Shield - Windcharger (Classicsverse Windcharger)
Reveal The Shield - Special Ops Jazz (Classicsverse Jazz)
Reveal The Shield - Turbo Tracks (Classicsverse Tracks)
Reveal The Shield - Perceptor (Classicsverse Perceptor)
Reveal The Shield - Wreck-Gar (Classicsverse Wreck-Gar)
Reveal The Shield, Legends - Gold Bumblebee (Classicsverse Minibot Goldbug)
Reveal The Shield, Legends - Trailcutter (Classicsverse Trailbreaker)
Hunt For The Decepticons - Seaspray (Classicsverse Seaspray)
Hunt For The Decepticons, Legends - Sandstorm (Classicsverse Sandstorm)
Revenge of The Fallen - Bludgeon (Classicsverse Bludgeon - Soon to be corrected by HeadRobots)
MusicLabel - Soundwave (Classicsverse Soundwave)
DeviceLabel - Broadblast (Classicsverse Blaster)
Fansproject - Warbot Defender (3rd Party/FansProject Superior Springer Achievement)
MGT-01 - Delicate Warrior (3rd Party/FansProject Superior Arcee Achievement)

I've also considered adding Energon Omega Supreme (If I get around to getting him repainted via commission) and Armada Tidalwave (Decepticons are always severely outnumbered) to the Classicsverse but I've just not managed to fully sell myself on the idea... yet. ;):p
In the end, I feel if there is a character missing and there is another toy out there that can accurately fulfil that position without looking way too out of place?, then I don't see why not; in the end though it is each to his/her own.

I've slapped a Decepticon sticker on the real gear High Score 100. To me his ape mode fits in as Beastbox.

Classics Tankor is Octane and Silverstreak is Blue Streak in my collection. Funnily enough Rodimus has stuck as Rodimus.

I've started calling ROTF Brawl as Guzzle to slip him into the Classics line.

I also have a heap of customs but they're a bit more involved than just re-naming/badging.....

Since Hasbro has been very messy with releasing toys in appropriate lines, it's become necessary to repurpose figures, specially into Classics. A prime example of this is the 'Reveal the Shield' figures which seem to be promoted more as a movie line than Generations/Classics.

I always look at what I perceive to be the originally intended line for a figure by the designer not Hasbro marketing which are slaves to the whims of Walmart and less legitimate in my opinion. Such toys include: Crankcase and Crasher (Fracture).

Sometimes I re-purpose based on personal preference but it is almost always related to the above such as Bludgeon who's original concept design was envisioned for Classics/Universe but then adapted into Movie.

When it comes to names, I don't care what Hasbro calls it since they like to nameslap mindlessly. I go for the original character's name such as me having a Classics Crasher instead of Fracture and Octane instead of Tankor which was only done for Hasbro to hold onto the Tankor copyright as the Japanese named him right for Henkei.

For a moment there I thought you meant with re-purposing as... oh I use so and so as my front door stopper:p;)

Okay a whole lot of repurposing happens in my collection for the newer stuff . Meaning most other figures from other lines I get the ones that can/will fit the bill for a G1 modern version counterpart and is absorbed into the CHUGUR line

> In my Classicverse world- some Micromasters get their old big bodies back. Which would explain the TRU exclusive (Cyb Def Red Alert redeco) Countdown's bigger body form.
>Hasbro Generations Powerglide (white) is Classicverse Hothouse ( the G1 micromaster) in my collection and the Purple /black recolour is Classicverse former micromaster Tailwind
> TRU exclusive movie yellow Mudflap (the crane truck) is Classicverse Erector - but in a further twist he is a decepticon coz he got braiwashed (reprogrammed)by Megatron to construct him a Omni Power tower
> TFU Overload ( reclor of Cyb Def Scattorshot) is Classicverse fromer micromaster G1 Flak - the botcon flak - which is white is too expensive plus the colors aint right.

>Walmart/target exclusive movie figures - Crankcase, Fracture (Crasher in my collection) , Breakaway (Getaway)and Big Daddy are not movie figs but Classicverse
> ROTF Bludgeon is Classicverse Samurai Lord Bludgeon and his "assistants/ninja Aides" - Brimstone and RTS Chopsaw he is joined by his loyal right hand ROTF Banzaitron which is Classicverse figure now as well
> ROTF Mindwipe is classicverse Mindwipe same with Skystalker
> ROTF Breacher is not movie figure but classicverse
> ROTF Seaspray is classicverse Seaspray
> Hubcap is Classicverse G2 Volt - still looking for a sword
> 5 pack Combaticons leftovers - (helicopter) Swindle and (tank) Blastoff are now Thunderwing's crew - Spinister and Quake

There's still a couple more "alterations" but this reply is getting too long :p:p I guess you get the picture anyways.

I've always been repurposing Transformers in my collection since I was a kid!
For a Looooong time, my Throttlebot Rollbar was my G1 Hound - one of my favourite characters, but one I could never find in the shops. Likewise, Streetwise filled in as Prowl
Sparkabot Sizzle = Hot Rod (a bit remote in likeness but at the time was the only hot rod like race car we could find)

As for now, for my collection - regardless of the Series line a figure is released under, if the character looks like and feels like them, then it is that character! This is irrespective of name or theme.

Well that is what I think anyway

I tend to agree with Kup that sometimes the packaging, promotional or trademark issues sometimes put a toy at odds with the original design. (RTS Wreck-Gar or G2 Prime are clearly "classics" toys for instance).

As a kid I repurposed toys from otherlines as Transformers too. Many of my hot-wheels cars were substitutes for Autobot cars I didn't own. My Machine Man Man-o-war (http://www.tfu.info/Gobots/Guardians/Man-O-War/man-o-war.htm) was Broadside.

It's interesting that every example so far is people repurposed toys to be "Classics". A couple of examples of my repurposing that aren't are:

Sidearm Sideswipe is my Movie Sunstreaker
"While his identical twin brother Sideswipe prefers to get up close and personal in battle, the vain Sunstreaker prefers to keep his armour clean and pick off Decepticons at a distance."

"Rally" Sideswipe is my Movie Bluestreak
"Before the war Bluestreak was a racing champion, highly competitive with fellow racer Sideswipe. Since the destruction of his home-city, Bluestreak only cares about winning one thing - the war against the Decepticons!"

(I'd actually like to give both new heads and a bit of a tweak to their colours, but the in the meantime, this justifies me having three deluxe Sideswipe toys)

I would love to officially repurpose RtS Mindset to be a Decepticon, as it was obviously meant to homage the G2 Decepticon comic character but somewhere along the line at Hasbro, it's allegiance got mixed up. Not sure why either, as the RtS toys were 10 to 1 in favour of the Autobots, so it would have been more beneficial having more Decepticons in the line.

when it comes to things like the reveal the shield line (or any line that isnt tied to some series) the transformer to me is Reveal the Shield (insert line they are representing) (insert name) eg Reveal the Shield Turbo Tracks is Reveal the Shield Classics Tracks

there are some pretty interesting reuses of transformers here

Nothing really different to anyone else here except I use Cyb Def Scattershot as Dropshot because it's the same mould and the colours are a better homage to G1... just have to paint the legs and around the head green.

this is a common opinion for me, this fits seaspray and other like him as well.

in the case of the classicsverse chughwugblergh line, I don't usually use figures from other sources to represent figures in that line as I ihold out hope that in time HasTak will do something about it for me. this approach also allows me to spend less money at any given time except for the end of last year when we had that glut of classics figures.:p:D

Looking around the study, other repurposing includes

Tracker Hound as a Decepticon (with a Decepticon sticker over the Autobot logo)

Universe Powerglide as Hothouse (with reprolabels)

Sunstreaker as Tigertrack (also with reprolabels)

Sunspot as an Autobot (to pair up with Strafe, to match the Mindwipe/Skystalker pairing)

OMG!! You are a legend. Ive been thinking for ages what to call my Rally Sideswipe and you have decided for me! ...........Bluestreak!! Lol:)

I now need to think of a character that bests represents that black ICEPICK from the Flash Freeze pack. Any ideas?

Black and orange and turns into a chainsaw? Well Buzzsaw comes to mind, but then its not clear if that Icepick is an Autobot or Decepticon, so, although it's not G1, you could think of him as (Energon) Snowcat.

My classics shelves, while to many repurposed toys to name, has included on it:
Classics
Universe 2.0
Generations
RtS.
In my eyes these were all meant to be the same line.

Other toys include:
RotF Mindwipe, Bludgeon and Lockdown
DotM Powerglide
BW 10th anniversary Optimus Primal and Megatron
HftD/AA Seaspray, Tomahawk, Jetblade and Terradive

I keep putting Movie 2007 Arcee on the shlef but she just doesn't fit.

Universe 2.0 Dirge had found his way to the Cybertron shelf and all my junnkers live together on the Planet of Junk.

#Energon insecticon for Chopsaw
#G1 Legend Bumblebee as smaller sized minibot compared to scout sized minibots
#G2 Frenzy for 'Japanese' G1 Soundblaster
#Japanese exclusive minicon Chrome as a nod to G1 Sparkplug (ref. to Armada minicon toy of same name) as a nod to that G1 episode where Spike mind was transferred to that weird mashup robot

Yeah, I just go with whatever the toy is officially meant to be. Sometimes during toy play I might mix and match some toys from different series - but at the end I always put them back on their "correct" shelves. ;)

Ive just got DOTM Skyhammer off laybuy... was thinking of absorbing him to the ranks of Classicverse but somehow for me it doesnt fully sit well to be a G1 skyhammer classicverse equivalent... so Im trying to think of a character match alternative for him... any suggestions guys... else he will just end up as .. well, Classicverse Skyhammer:p sans the shell of course, which was the copter in the g1s but the innerbot was something else, which is prolly why Im not fully comfortable with a direct equivalent repurposing.

I lump all of CHUGUR together as my "Classicsverse." Anything that's not part of CHUGUR doesn't go on those shelves.

The G2 Cyberjets are indeed awesome designs. 1994-95 saw a lot of cool designs coming in, creating the first Transformer toys that could transform into articulated pose-able robot modes. The Cyberjets were among the first to widely incorporate the use of ball and socket joints. While this practice became standardised during Beast Wars, it was later G2 toys like the Cyberjets, Laser Rods etc. that pioneered the concept of Transformers as transformable action figures - putting the poorly articulated and non-transformable Action Masters to shame.

I keep mine on my G2 shelves though - but it is cool how they still stand the test of time pretty well. :)

Yeah, I saw those but the Wheeljack/Tracks mold for the Battlechargers just doesn't do it for me. It makes a great Tracks/Wheeljack but the vehicle mode is too far off the BCs G1 look, and if they were going to go for something less G1 but 'chunkier' I would have preferred a Movieverse Lockdown remold or something similar that looks actually badass.
The ideal would be a pair of new-mold/remold Scout class toys with ample C-clip options so you can get that 'full of guns' look.

does any1 use timelines Nightbeat in their classicverse collection? i like how you can position G1 Muzzle when Nightbeat is in vehicle mode

I am also starting to collect Beast Wars Timelines toys, i already have timelines Airrazor, intending to add DOTM Quickstrike, Energon Ravage and Universe Ratbat (during the time he wasn't a bat dude), interested if any1 had ideas of other toys from Unicronverse they would consider BW timeline toys.

I was thinking Strapmetal could be BW Inferno

well, Cybertron Longrack is meant to homage Beast Wars Neo Longrack

but other than that I dont really have anything

from the movieverse some people like to think that Scout class Knock Out looks like Waspinator and scout class Nightbeat was intented to be a homage to Packrat

Yeah but I display him with by Cybertron Autobots. Although I agree that he would make a neat repurpose as Cybertronian Long Rack. :) Not that Cybertronian Long Rack did all that much considering that he was a new recruit when he started serving under Big Convoy in BW Neo... so he might have been a civilian then. Maybe a construction worker? ;)

As per my comments on the acquisitions thread: I'm repurposing DOTM Armor Topspin as Topspin's identical twin brother Twin Twist; Specialist Ratchet as Movieverse Fixit (I also repurposed AA Rescue Ratchet as First Aid), and Cyberfire Bumblebee as Movieverse Hot Shot. And although the toy is named Darksteel it's clearly Movieverse Quickstrike.
