Was hoping to be playing the new Silent Hill this Halloween (whilst sipping Prince of Wales tea from my Silent Hill 2 mug :p), but alas the game has been delayed so a movie it is!

Any recommendations would be most welcome. :D

English or foreign? I find english horror films to be...bland. Not very freighting unless you're a kid or just looking for the odd "OMG WHERE DID THAT/HE/SHE COME FROM?".

Try some foreign horror films. It's almost bed time for me...so I can't name many off the top of my head.

Original Ring saga was great (Ringu)
The original grudge was great (creepy as hell)

I know I know, they are probably the most recommended horror films, but as I said, can't really name any other off the top of my head at this time of night :p

If u're waiting for silent hill, Replay the games from 1-4 or those fatal frame games.

The live-action Bio-Booster Armour Guyver movies are scary... but not in a good way. :p <shudder>

Have you seen Cursed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cursed_%282004_film%29)? That's pretty spooky. Do check out the original Japanese versions of Grudge and Ring if you haven't already -- I find them scarier than their American remakes. Ditto A Tale of Two Sisters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Tale_of_Two_Sisters) (later adapted as The Uninvited which I thought wasn't as scary).

English or foreign, doesn't matter! :D I watch a lot of horror so I'm hoping someone can suggest something a bit unusual.

Replaying the essential Silent Hills could indeed be a goer. I'd have to pick between 1 and 4 as the others are getting the HD treatment in time for Xmas. The first Fatal Frame was a great game, another good suggestion. :)

I tend to agree.

Hollywood horror films tend to pump money into visual effects and try to just visually scare the pants off you (don't get me wrong, it's still pretty darn scary), whereas a lot of Asian horror movies with their cheaper budgets, tend to use the story to psychologically scare you, and I find that creepier than visual frights! Many Asian horror films use the art of scaring you with what you _don't_ see rather than with what you do!

Some Hollywood horror movies are now going for lower budget psycho thrillers too instead of just lots of visual effects - like Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity etc.

Original Ring saga was great (Ringu)
The original grudge was great (creepy as hell)
I've read the Ring manga, which was adapted straight off the novel (it was originally a novel)... scarier than the film.

What about books? They can often be scarier than films. I've never read any Stephen King books, but people tell me they're scary and I don't find his films particularly scary (at least, not as scary as I'd expect I guess). H.P. Lovecraft is classic horror.

I loved reading Interview With A Vampire. The film is a good adaptation, but the book shows certain things in a certain light which we don't quite get from the film.
Tagged Spoilers:
e.g. the vampires are somewhat physically stronger -- when Louis and Lestat fight they kick some serious butt... I guess it would have required more extensive visual effects or CGI that wasn't as readily available at the time the film was made. Also there's an entire section about Louis travelling around Europe looking for more of his own kind and encountering wild/feral vampires; perpetuating many of the "myths" people have about vampires. It made him and Claudia think that they may have been the only intelligent vampires left until much later on when they encounter Armand and his cohorts.

I haven't read any of the other Vampire Chronicles books, but I've been told that they're not that good -- but Interview is pretty awesome IMHO. :) I found it to be a very hard book to put down. :D

Here's an Irish flick that I thought wasn't too bad: Wake Wood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qS_L06Mub40), my preferences tend to skew towards more of a 'Horror' theme than 'Spooky' but Spain's Orphanage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trL-n4PzcIk) is another good one that I'd consider to be Spooky. ;):)
I agree with the sentiment with Hollywood though; it's all blood/gore, snap-scare and 'boobies' - I'm not against that necessarily but well thought out and executed suspense-based scary movies seem to be a dead breed from them. :(

Fatbot and LordCyrus would be good people to ask too, if they were on. :p

These questions are very hard to answer, as everyone's idea of 'scary' is different.
For what it's worth, a few films that have creeped me out over the years: Rosemary's Baby (1968), The Haunting (1963), The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Blair Witch Project, Dead of Night (1945), Eraserhead.

(I own 3 different versions of the bloody thing! :p)

I agree though, it is always very hard as everyone does have different opinions... Might give Rosemary's Baby and Eraserhead a look into though, I should probably give Re-Animator (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCM7oG9UGKc&oref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fresults%3Fsear ch_query%3Dreanimator%26aq%3Df) a viewing too. :D

Re-Animator is good fun.
George A. Romero's 'zombie trilogy' of Night, Dawn & Day of the Dead are quite good. Not fun though.
What works for Chainsaw Massacre is the vibe it gives off. And I'd say that is the defining feature of all the films I listed above.

Torchwood : Children of Earth

You don't have to watch any of the previous series to understand this one but this is an amazing Sci-Fi / Horror. The story is horrifically gripping and doesn't rely on cheap thrills. The way it ends is just jaw-dropping.

Also it's only 5 episodes long - just short of 5 hours of entertainment!

A must watch for Halloween man

Out of all those, the ones I haven't seen are:

-Wake Wood
-Texas Chainsaw Massacre
-Torchwood: Children of Earth
-Trick or Treat
-Insidious

Might have to draw one out of a hat to see which one I go for. :p

Here are a few recommendations from meself:

-Rec 1 & 2 (Spanish)
-Dog Soldiers (Scottish)
-Frozen
-The Hole
-The Mist
-The Eye (Hong Kong)
-Final Destination
-Sauna (German)
-Braindead
-Versus (Japanese)
-The Fly
-Frailty
-Ils (French - stands for 'Them')
-Identity
-One Missed Call (Japanese)
-Triangle

Couple of suggestions:

Paranormal Activity: 1 is done well, 2 not so well. Creates a spooky atmosphere using sound (or lack of)

Don't watch The Mist: epic fail.

Trick R Treat is great for Halloween though not scary.

Texas Chainswaw Massacre, Last House on the Left, I spit on your Grave, Night of the Living Dead. All good movies but only watch the originals. Remakes are shit.

While I wouldn't necessarily call Identity 'creepy', it is an exceptional movie. The only downside is that it has an ending very similar to the 6th Sense - once you know what happens, watching it again just isn't the same.

The ending in 6th Sense is a classic twist ending.
Watching it a second time is a whole new experience.
Another great film for halloween is Donnie Darko. Not really a horror film, but halloween is quite pivotal to the plot.

I agree Skywarp, I love the horror genre but this kind of exploitative rubbish is the product of a warped mind imo. To think that a sequel was made too is just beyond...

fatbot, you're a legend! I knew there was a movie by the director of Frozen I wanted to see...And Hatchet is it! Marathon is looking good at this stage, haha

Did anyone go and see the 2011 remake of The Thing? John Carpenters version is my favourite movie of all time (got to watch it on the big screen last year at Brisbane's GOMA, was such a thrill) and while I knew this couldn't compete, nothing could prepare me for how bad this new remake/prequel really is!

A few people have mentioned The Last Exorcism. I enjoyed this and thought it started off well but they seemed to run out of ideas near the end. I think The Exorcism of Emily Rose is a much tighter movie overall, absolutely loved that one!

Donnie Darko... don't watch that if you're feeling mentally exhausted -- it's a good movie, but you'll need your thinking hat on. Not something to watch if you just want some mindless entertainment (I guess that's more like what Michael Bay excels in :p).

There's also "Devil" by M. Night Shyamalan (checks Google - yes, I spelt it right! :D) - the same director as the Sixth Sense. Apparently that's going to be the first in a series (trilogy?) he's working on.

For the Stephen King fans, 1408 (2007) is another one you may want to check out. For me, it started off well with a high intrigue factor but the last half was a bit of a let down (like The Last Exorcism). Still worth seeing though (like The Last Exorcism :p).

Is the Village the one with the Amish people that lie to their kids about monsters in the woods to protect them from the outside world? When I went to see that I was so creeped out but wanted to know/see more of the monsters. Once I knew the secret I nearly walked out of the movie through bitter dissapointment. Only my wife made me stay and watch the whole thing.

I felt so ripped off with that movie. The same with Signs. Why the hell would aliens invade a planet that is 3/4 covered in a product that can kill them? That would be like Earthlings invading a planet that doesn't have oxygen. Just stupid IMO of course.

Saw Paranormal Activity 3 today, and was kinda disappointed. It almost expects a movie that explains or resolves the underlying occult theme of the trilogy, but that sort of story-telling may not be possible in the 'surveillance camera' format that makes these movies "famous".
I can say that you definitely don't need to see the first two to see the third one, as it plays out events from their childhood that is referred to, but never explained in the first movies. There were a few loose ends I didn't like, and the reaction from the audience in the cinema with me were a lot of comments of disappointment at it ending the way it did.
I also think it wasn't as scary as the first two. I think the second one was scarier... but if you plan to watch any, be aware that it is suspense-scary, with lots of waiting for something to jump out at you.

John Carpenter's one, I saw it with my dad when i was 8. It scared me a lot =]

A friend of mine just recommended this movie to me today. I guess I should probably check it out too...

If you're still looking for a good horror film, I'd recommend checking out The Tunnel (http://isohunt.com/torrent_details/303700881/the+tunnel?tab=summary) (EDIT: It's basically a cross between the Blair Witch Project and an episode of Australian Story/a
Four Corners expose). Not only is it an Australian horror film and a well done one at that, but it's a legitimate torrent release, so the download link I've posted here is completely legal.

Yep, I've got to agree that The Tunnel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a_2fKmjekk) is quite an excellent film which I found to be rather surprising given that it is an Australian film; a worthy film of joining the ranks of Aussie horror. ;)
