I have seen these around for years and never known what they are called. Anybody able to help a guy out?

Colloquially, they're known as Stink bugs; though this isn't what it actually is of course. ;):)

Wow. A stink bug hey? Interesting. Occasionally inside the house I have come across little black bugs that can release a terrible stench when they feel threatened, but they don't look anything like that one.

More than one type of stinky bug I guess.

Hey Tecchan, click on the Japanese language link on that Wikipedia page and check out the Japanese name for this insect. ;) Literally translates as "Southern Green Turtle Bug" (a lot less insulting than being called a stink bug :p)

As kids, we used to run around with them in Primary School trying to 'stink' each other, it was also a regular occurrence that they'd end up down the back of the girls too. :p:D

There are ones that look like that but with orange tips known as crusader bugs.
