If you could choose only one...
Let's just say that you were moving and for some unknown and irrelevant reason you could only take one Transformer with you, which would you choose?
For the sake of discussion there is no size limit, so WST Bumblebee counts as one, as does Fortress Maximus (including appropriate head robots). Masterforce characters are one, so Mindwipe and Vorath are one. Prentenders include their shell as one. Gestalts count as one, as long as it is the combined mode, ie Devastator is one, but the Constructicons would count as six thereby being too many. Predaking is one, Razorclaw is one, but all the Predacons separated from Predaking would be five. Etc etc.
MISB collectors this applies to you as well, a Devastator gift set is one, but the individually carded Constructicons would be six. As long as it's one package it counts, so those anniversary Megatron/Optimus from Japan that have G1 and DOTM characters in them count as one.
So, which would you choose and why? Playability, impressiveness, emotional connection, nostalgic reasons all count.
Now that I thought of this question, I am not too sure of which I would choose. I am currently spending some quality time with Transmetal 2 Megatron, but as much as I like his bling, I don't think he'd be the one.

I think we have another thread like this somewhere already.
Toss-up between MP10 and TM2 Megatron - depends if this is a 'only allowed to have one at all' or '...all the others will remain in storage in Oz.' If the latter then TM2 Megs for sure, if the former then it gets tricky to choose between MP10 (expensive, pretty much the iconic TF, and for me kinda symbolic of my new and not-crap life here in Japan), TM2 Megs (favourite TF character ever, love the alt-mode), and my G1 Predaking (the one I wanted most as a kid but never got, the toy that got me back into TF collecting, freaking expensive to replace).

Wasp (disguised as Bumblebee): "Ehhh...He's got really...long arms?"
My good old custom TFA activator Waspy of course! :D He's my favourite Animated character and my first custom. The fact that there isn't a proper toy for Earth mode Wasp makes him even more special to me!

I would be racked with indecision.
I have my original G1 collection at my parents house in Victoria, many of these have a very important place in my heart, Skids and Thundercracker being my first two for Christmas when I was very young, maybe 5 or 6. the protectobots and several others being a part of the most epic lay-buy of my life. it took me months and months of pocket money and chores to pay off over $200 worth of toys.
But I love my alternators, masterpiece Transformers and many of the better movie toys and classics figures.
For the moment I am going to say, "NO I WONT CHOOSE" you can't make me.
I would possibly not keep anything if I had to get rid of all bar one. The drastic sense of loss and despair I would feel everytime I looked at the one remaining transformer would not be worth the satisfaction of keeping the one.
If I make a decision I will post it later in the thread. but Any single one toy would not be able to support my interest and excitement for the franchise.

We already had Rattrap in the form of Rattletrap (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Rattletrap) and of course Blackarachnia, Waspinator, Spittor and Cheetor.
Other Animated BW could have beens? Off the top of my head...
Primal Major (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Primal_Major) (Optimus Primal)
Stampy (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Stampy_%28Animated%29)
Star Upper (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Star_Upper_%28Animated%29) (his image made an appearance but the character did not)
Longrack (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Longrack_%28Animated%29)
Alpha Supreme (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Alpha_Supreme) (Omega Supreme X Axalon)
Scorponok (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Scorponok_%28Animated%29) (G1 colours but alt mode arguably looks more BWesque)
Slapper (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Slapper_%28Animated%29) (yeah I know, technically not a BW homage, but he's still based on a Predacon)
...that's all I can think of for now, but I'm sure I've left some out.

They wouldn't have necessarily looked out of place - as many of them would have transformed into vehicles, like Cheetor (who shares the same body type as Blurr). Rattletrap & Stampy share the same body type as Ransack (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Ransack_%28Animated%29) so presumably they transform into bikes. Spittor and Slapper transform into these kinda bipedal jumping fighting machines with "tongues" that's froglike, but they aren't actually frogs. Longrack looks inspired by Cybertron Longrack, who transforms into a crane (the construction vehicle, not the bird). Deoth Charge's alt mode kibble suggests that he transforms into a jet (which isn't so bad considering that his BW namesake's vehicle mode was a kind of jet).
Primal Major would be the most likely to sport a beast mode, and it's said that his origin story would have tied to Blackarachnia. The others would simply be regular vehicular moded Transformers who happen to sport aesthetic designs/motifs that resemble BW characters. :)

Haven't seen the show yet, huh Verno?;)
Animated did lots of homages and did them well, just because the creators were fans making a show for fans by fans. You really just need to watch it (and trawl the TFwiki) to understand - they really did love their work. If they were homaging Primal it was because they found a way to incorporate it into the storyline and because they wanted to, not to try to win over new fans.
Let's face it, Animated had been going for three seasons by then and it got a pretty big reaction from the fanbase one way or another, they weren't going to win over any new converts by then and they knew it.
Man I miss that series, and Season 4 sounded like it was gonna be great. RIP Animated.:(

For me dude, I appreciate the nods that those involved with TF: Animated gave to BW as it's something they didn't have to do but really they had no intention to ever really 'Bring in Beast Wars', rather, they just took pieces that suited their needs - It's a show that caters far more to G1 fans than Beast Wars but it's got to be said that they did give fans something to w*** over...

I actually didn't mind the narrative of the show so I'd be interested in some comic adaptations, especially an Origins of TF:A Blitzwing - I thought what they did with his character was an absolute triumph that added to an established character rather than taking away. ;)

well i must say that my favorite out of all my collection would be Energon Omega Supreme, totally cool in alt mode and in robot mode plus he is one HUGE bot.
GoktimusPrime
3rd February 2012, 10:49 AM
...I'm really not a big fan of that toy. Just feels like a big (and jolly expensive) Mega Pretender shell. The transformation/engineering is underwhelmingly pedestrian - and likewise the alt modes are pretty ordinary. The Headmaster-Mini-Con gimmick is neat and I do like how the neck becomes the default head when the Mini-Con's not attached (useful if you ever lose the Mini-Con), but still not worth the price tag (trying to remember how much this toy retailed for... $100-150? - it certainly was never cheap). I don't like how the Mini-Con is nameless too... should've called him "Omega Spreem" IMO
If Energon Omega Supreme is one of your favourite toys, then hey that's cool... but for me he's not exactly the most endearing figure. Maybe if he'd been a lot cheaper (like maybe $50?).

yer i do agree that it was not a cheap toy, but for the series of cartoons that was on tv it was awesome to have a bot of that calibre written in to the story and to have O.prime combine into him was my favorite part. it is like G1 with metroplex not to flash on the development part but if you had that toy it was awesome. there are alot of toys out of different lines that have better development and look better but IMO i think that for it's time it was a great toy to aquire.:D
GoktimusPrime
9th February 2012, 11:21 AM
I find G1 Metroplex to be a far more substantial toy than Energon Omega Supreme. Once you get over the relative "smallness" (cos I must admit even as a kid when I first saw Metroplex I thought he was small - expected an Autobot City to be bigger) it's a pretty good toy. Metroplex is really designed to interact with the smaller carded Autobots - like the Mini Cars and Scramble City gestalt TFs (he even has ports that you can plug limbformers into!). Scamper is relatively decent (far more substantial than say Gasket and Grommet) - and Sixgun is okay, pretty cool considering that he's basically just a weapons 'storage' system (i.e. an incentive not to lose the individual guns because they form a robot).

If by calibre you mean big and strong... okay. But he's still - IMHO - a fairly ordinary toy that ill-justifies its RRP. I know that sometimes ordinary (and even crappy) toys can get good canonical portrayals/appearances which can make fans want that toy more - look at G1 Thunderwing (he probably would have been nearly as forgettable as the other Mega Pretenders if he hadn't been given such a memorable appearance in G1 canon). I certainly never bothered to get any of the Mega Pretenders in 1989 -- the only reason I have G1 Thunderwing is because he was a birthday present! I still don't have Crossblades or Vroom. :p
Obviously characters like Omega Supreme were put in the cartoon and portrayed as being big and mighty as a means of selling the toy - that's fundamentally why Transformers canon exists. But for me, that alone isn't enough to make the toy good (I mean, Devastator was big and powerful in ROTF but Combiner Class Devastator is still a craptastic toy). Having said that, I still bought both Energon Omega Supreme and Combiner Class Devastator...

haha, thats the thing goki even thou the toys are sub-standard you have to sit back and determine if the value of the purchase is worth the effort of aquiring the toy (which sometimes it usually is.) i must say that from the start of my collection days i would always say that if the toy was not as good as what the series was and the detail of the line was poor i would not aquire that toy, but as we all know it would end up in the collection anyway. by the way love the pic of metro and supreme looks awesome.:D

Well effort is typically go to shops and buy toy. In the case of my Energon Omega Supreme, a trip to Target. :p
i must say that from the start of my collection days i would always say that if the toy was not as good as what the series was and the detail of the line was poor i would not aquire that toy,
Yes but with some notable exceptions, Transformer toys are typically out before any series. So for me it's usually - I see a toy, if it looks cool (or if I've had the opportunity to play around with someone else's) I'll get it... otherwise, I skip it - regardless of canonical appearance.
At least, that's how it used to be when I was a kid. Nowadays it's more like...
but as we all know it would end up in the collection anyway.
<sigh> Sad but true! As an adult I often buy toys that I think are crap simply because the character made a canonical appearance and I wanted that toy-character for completion's sake. <facepalms.self> But I was a lot less discerning compared to today when I was collecting Energon (cos I was a single dude back then - having a family kinda makes you more picky and tight ;)).
by the way love the pic of metro and supreme looks awesome.

Every toy I have is more than that. They tell a story. From the ones I had as a kid (I used to take Bumblebee to church, apparently), to the ones I always wanted as a kid (eg original Prowl), to ones that were given to me by people who were happy they were going to a good home where they'd be appreciated and well kept (eg G1 Jetfire).

okay, after looking at all my figures.... my original 1984 G1 Soundwave (with Buzzsaw). Still complete and playable sans the box ( that was long gone a few years after due to frequent floods in Phils).
He was my first official TF toy given to me back in 1985. For a few years following that, I haven't had any other TF other than a Microman Microx (Reflector) which is also as well still with me. That toy is my very first one, the one that started it all for me, my prime TF toy so to speak. So if ever, it is the one I'd choose.
Plus it fits all the criteria posed by Tets in the first post
Playability - yep still ok to play with ( I ain't rough with my toys thank goodness, I have my Papercraft Tfs for that back then hehehe) and that open to eject gimmick gets anyone all the time! Eject FTW!:D
Impressiveness - heck yeah - it's Soundwave ! He is superior:D:p plus (g1 boys and gals) admit it or not when TF MTMTE first came out and you saw it, Soundwave was a scene stealer! A robot which can store other bots - what a great one man army concept is that! and that synthesized voice! The toy gimmick of press the button to "eject" the tapes was/is awesome IMO. It is also a very poseable toy considering it is from that era compared to all the others.
Nostalgia - oh yeah he fits that bill for me as well - He's my FIRST EVER official TF toy. The character catched my eye watching the betamax tapes of the toons at my neighbors house and I was immediately hooked in the Cartoons and then the toys. Having received him from my aunt I was very very content. I wrote her a letter when I was young asking for Tfs for Xmas. Of course I asked for a gazillion figures heheheh, but I guess I have described Soundwave far more better than the rest coz she said when she was at the shops, she was specifically looking for the cassette tape recorder - so even in my aunt's memory Soundwave makes a lasting impression.
Emotional Connection - yep This I can't describe, but yeah it connects me to that time and feeling of everything about TF lore was fresh, new and oh so bigger than life and yeah sooo feelgood being a "child" again feeling.

I didn't think Galaxy force Op could combine with plane and tiger at the same time. If it could then yes, but they have to stay together ;) Good choice, Galaxy Force Convoy is one of my favourite Primes.

Funny you mention that. I was reorganising my TFs a while ago and came across my Encore Soundwave and the loose extra cassettetrons I put in his box too. I brought it out to show the wife who doesn't have much interest in Transformers. She looks at it with slight amusement.
"See, it's a cassette player right? (transform noise) Now it's a robot, but there's more, check this out"
Ejects Buzzsaw (wife looking a bit impressed)
"It can hold cassettes!" Hands cassette over to wife, she is looking it over.
"But check THIS out!" Transform cassette.
Awesome-ness of Transformers appropriately demonstrated.
Mission accomplished. Marriage more solid than before due to understanding.
Or something like that!
I love it when grown people mess about with a TF and discover how cool they are!

The level of self containment is mightily impressive for a 1984 toy. The only other toy in that year that could arguably rival it would be Optimus Prime, although the alt mode officially has no place to put the fists (but I always put them in the driver compartment - I prided myself on _never_ having lost my original Prime's fists (ditto landing gears for the jets that I put in their cockpits)). Of course those compartments were really intended for Diaclone drivers... as far as intended self containment is concerned, Prime and Soundwave are about equal; but I'd personally rate Soundwave better because I'd rather lose missiles than lose fists. ;)

Everyone I know would store the fists that way, myself included. It just made sense. The only part that ever went missing on me was one of Sideswipe's missiles. Some might say that 'it's OK, you've still got the other two', but that wasn't good enough for me so... I bought another :D
