That is indeed a prototype of Fort Max in the catalogue... as most were pre-production figures, for the catalogues to be printed up and packaged with the toys during their production.
The real Fort Max can be seen here (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Image:G1FortressMaximus_toy.jpg), which does show the barrels folded back.

I thought I recalled an article (or even site) that was devoted to highlighting the various (and numerous) prototypes seen in catalogues from G1 to more recent lines.

Google isn't helping me find it though.

I can find mis-transformations in catalgoues (http://tfarchive.com/toys/mistransformed/officially_mistransformed.php) which are interesting too, but not quite the same thing.

Anyone got a URL?

It's not the 1985 Pre-Toy Fair Transformers Catalog (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/generation-1-1/1985-pre-toy-fair-transformers-catalog-171123/) you're thinking of is it?

That's one example, and those are interesting too for being even more obscure, but I thought I recall a site with all the examples of ones in the packed-in or back of the box catalogues (like Grey Astrotrain in '85).

All the early Beast Wars stuff had pictures of the upcoming figures in non-final colours. Orange Tarantulas for example.

Not aware of a site dedicated to it though mate.
