G'day guys, the names Brad and I hope I have come to the right place to ask this and get the answser I want to hear lol. Going back roughley 9 years ago I got rid of my medium 80's/90's lot of Transformers and GI Joe's to my dads son who is a collector himself, anyway little things like the girlfriend buying me the G1 DVD series, watching TF new movies and watching Beast Wars (again) has shot a lighting bolt up the clacker and have decided to get back into collecting TF's.

Im stuck at to what I should collect again though, my heart leans towards the G1 Transformers because thats what I grew up with :) but then I think about Beast Wars because they are easier to get. Even considering getting the new Transformers Generations because they "look" cool, plus I enjouyed the PS3 game.

My dad and I used to go around to OP shops, Garage Sales, swap meets and Trash and Treasure to find them because they were easy to find ands cheap. Again though that was when I was ALOT younger and the G1 were still fresh!

Christ I wish I never gave away my collection :( Had puzzles, books, figs, VHS,comics, posters and more!!

So what road do you guys think I should take??

Regards Brad.

Hi Brad. I'd give the following 4 premiere Transformers series a chance and start collecting the toys from the show you enjoy the most. Prime/WFC/FOC could possibly be the right choice as the show (Transformers Prime) is ridiculously good and the toys are slowly trickling into stores. :)

-G1
-Beast Wars
-Animated
-Prime/WFC/FOC

Sorry mate, should have explained in a bit more detail.

WFC = War for Cybertron (a video game released in 2010 featuring a brand new Transformers Universe)

FOC = Fall of Cybertron (the sequel to the above video game, comes out later this year)

The latest Transformers tv show "Transformers Prime" takes place in the same universe established by WFC, however its events occur much, much later on (think of WFC and FOC as prequels to Transformers Prime).
If you have a look at some of the more recent pics of FOC, you'll note that Cliffjumper looks like a Cybertronian version of his Transformers Prime character (because that's what he is :p).

Transformers Prime is a freaking sweet show and I can't recommend it highly enough but I did find it very hard to watch until episode 12: Predatory. It has been kicking robo-butt since then though and doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon. Any other questions, let us know!

I'd recommend collecting whatever is currently in stores now, e.g. Transformers Prime. If you wanna build a "G1" collection, I'd recommend going for "Classicsverse"*; cheaper, easier and quite frankly, the toys are generally better made too (joys of modern toy engineering). See this thread (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=9742) for lots of side by side comparison photos between G1 and Classicsverse. :)

Here's young Cliffjumper in FOC, the prequel to the Transformers Prime tv show. His alt mode is a cybertronian car (non-earth vehicle).

Here's older Cliffjumper in Transformers Prime. He's sporting an Earth vehicle alt mode now, thus the smoother look to his robot mode. :)

Personally I would look at some of the G1 encore stuff as that will "fix" your G1 needs and most of the encore toys are well known characters from the original show.

I would also look at some of the Beast Wars stuff as its still pretty cheap and easily obtainable. And just awesome cause its Beast Wars related!!

But I would highly recommend the /Classics/Henkei/United/Generations figures some of the earlier released figures can be a bit pricey now but the line is great as most of the toys are original characters that have been updated to todays standards.

Here are some good Transformers news websites you may want to bookmark for the latest info too (most things get posted here but it's worth checking these ones too!):

You may also be interested in this thread (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=12742) I created which lists all prices for the Transformers Prime toys, both online and at local retail (keep in mind that not all stores stock the toys at the moment).

Have fun!

Also look at lines like Classics from 2006 onwards, Universe 2.0, Generations, and select 'Reveal The Shield' figures.

A LOT of them are simply modern, updated versions of Generation One characters (Generation One being the original stuff, usually just referenced as G1).

They're the toys you wish you had as a kid. Plenty of articulation, nice decos (some are a difficult choice, As TakTom in Japan released their own versions with generally different paint apps, sometimes better, sometimes worse. It's a personal taste thing at the end of the day), and relatively recent. There's also a fairly broad character selection, and boards like this to help you get started with friendly trades etc.

How do you feel about comics? There's been some very good Transformers done. They're still being made to date, and are currently (arguably) the best they've ever been. If you'd like some recommendations in that area, please feel free to message me. I'm always glad to help someone when it comes to the wide selection available of Transformers comics/graphic novels.

And if you're a gamer, you NEED War For Cybertron. It's just fantastic. It has great designs, a great story, and is a really good game overall. Win-win.

Best of luck to you, whichever way you decide to go, and again, feel free to message me at any time. :)

Hi Cat :) thanks for the help! the last Transformer comic I ever held was Transformers Armada. Enjoyed the series, started reading them when I was in high school, but they went to :(.

I considered picking up the comics, just dont feel like hunting around for issue 1 when we are up for what roughley guessing 156 lol. Any soultions??

GoktimusPrime

A lot of the old issues have been compiled and reprinted as Trade Paperbacks (soft and hard covers) or what's often abbreviated as "TPBs." This includes a lot of the original 1980s/90s G1 and G2 comics from Marvel too! :D Much easier than hunting down individual back issues. :)

More great news: this year IDW will be releasing G1 #81 - continuing the original G1 story that ended in #80 back in 1991! :D PUMPED!

Hello and welcome to the forum OZDevastator!

For a G1 fix - Get the Encore line - cheap and available now in online stores. It's more of to appease the nostalgia in you.

For updated versions of G1 characters- as already mentioned get the
Classics/Henkei,
United
select RtS (reveal the shield),
and Generations 2.0 ( includes certain WOC/FOC figures)

and for the current line - as that will be easiest to get
TF:Prime

If you also want a selected line which is both a quirky version of the Tf universe lore - have a gander at TF Animated line - its a done line but the transalation to toys from the cartoon series is remarkable toy engineering wise (well, in my book anyways):) There is also the Tf Animated Almanac for reading material wise for the line - it's a more detailed look and discusses as well as expands/explores on the TF Animated universe lore. A very, very good read - especially volume 2 (only 2 volumes) :)

I started just wanting a few classic G1's & now I collect G1/reissues, Classicverse & Prime with some Masterpiece figures as well.

Hey Prowl, yup I reckon Im going to be like you soon lol. The G1 Generations look pimping I tell ya! Especially Warpath :) I found it hard trying to make a decision because I just want to collect one series not vear off..like you say its a slippery gig.

We shall see what my heart tells me today when I go shopping if I do end up buying the Prime series or Generations. Hell I got $455 to spend!

I would definately recommend also looking at the sales threads here. It is amazing what you can pick up at a decent price. Ebay is great too but look at completed listings to see what an item is actually worth because ebay is full of gougers.

Gok is right about the Kmart sale. Toyworld can be a great resource as well as Kmart for "generations" style figures. I have found Toyworld Ringwood particularly good & if you get out there you also have Kmart, Big W etc.

Sweet! lmfao I will go to Kmart,Toys R Us, ToyWorld etc! I live in Ringwood so im quite lucky to be surrounded by shopping centres :D $15! wohoo

Think I should buy 2 of each? 1 to open and 1 to keep in the box??

Things to consider:
+ Cost. I think collecting single Transformers is expensive enough as it is; collecting in multiples will increase this cost. Remember that $15 is a very special sale price that Kmart is offering because they're trying to get rid of dead stock. The standard RRP for a Deluxe Transformer is $30.
+ Space. All those extra toys take up space, and sealed Transformers take up a LOT more space than open ones.

Well strongley disapointed! I walked into JB Hi FI and they said they had never even heard of the series Transformers Prime. So I went to TRU at Chadstone and took a squiz and they had: Prime Deluxe, Megatron Deluxe, Wheel Jack Deluxe and Bumblee Deluxe.

After that I decided to go to Kmart and they had Transformers Generations :) except the shelves were nearly just wide open with a couple boxes of Cup and Wheel Jack :(

I ummd and arrrrd to the mrs lol and couldnt decide which road to take! I decided to go with G1 :) the roots well as close as im going to get.

We also dropped into the Burwood Kmart on the way back home and foud the last copies of Warpath!

So I bought 2 Deluxes for Wheel Jack, and 2 Deluxes of Warpath :)

Tell you what the Generations are hard to find though...

That's because Transformers Prime is still relatively new. The series hasn't even been shown on Australian TV yet, let alone come out on DVD! And the toys only came out on Aussie shelves earlier this month. Even the overseas "First Edition" wave that we missed came out only last December/January.

Tell you what the Generations are hard to find though...
No surprise. Keep in mind that these toys came out last year and they've been pegwarming for aaages since. Kmart have slashed the price of their Deluxe Class Transformers in half (RRP = $30) in an effort to clear dead stock. What came out with these assortments were:

+ Scourge (http://tfwiki.net/w2/images2/5/5c/GenerationsToy-Scourge.jpg)
+ Kup (http://tfwiki.net/w2/images2/9/9c/Generations_SergeantKup.jpg)
+ Thundercracker (http://tfwiki.net/w2/images2/d/db/Genthundercracker.JPG)
+ Wheeljack (http://tfwiki.net/w2/images2/c/c0/Generationstoy-Wheeljack.jpg)
+ Warpath (http://tfwiki.net/w2/images2/6/61/Generationstoy-Warpath.jpg)
...all very nice toys. :)

Yup, I noticed season 1 Transformers Prime got released March 2nd (US).Stores on Ebay are selling them for buttons here in AUS! so looks like I will get it from there :)

I will consider getting the TF:Prime figure collection in the coming weeks, because well correct me if Im wrong but now would be the time to get them as they are JUST coming threw? To add to this Target is selling the Prime figures for $22 each and Prime/Megatron $47.50.

GoktimusPrime

Yeah but unfortunately Australia has completely skipped Transformers Prime First Edition (FE), which IMHO was better made than Transformers Prime Robots In Disguise (TFPRiDE) - the TF Prime figures that are out here now. Have a look at the reviews section (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/forumdisplay.php?f=9); there are dedicated threads reviewing each Transformer Prime toy. Check out what people have said about these toys and where there are comparisons between the FE and TFPRiDE figures -- then you can decide for yourself if you want to get a FE figure from overseas or if you're happy to get the local TFPRiDE toys. Wheeljack and Soundwave are the only TFPRiDE Transformer characters that are "new" and don't have FE counterparts; but the other TFPRiDEs do. :) But yeah, if you're gonna get TFPRiDE, get 'em on sale for sure.

Yeah it is not out here on DVD yet. I find online to be the best resource for buying TF products. Robot Kingdom is quite good but weigh up freight costs before buying especially from the US.

I also agree with Gok. Get the Generations G1 style figures while you can or you will want to buy them in 6-12 months time & pay through the nose (lesson lived & learned by yours truly). You may even find Dirge if you are lucky!

I don't have anything more to add to what's already been said.

there are still a few good generations toys on shelves at Kmart if you're quick. pick up G1 reissues for your nostalgia kick, and if you dig them, maybe then consider spending more money on non re-issue G1 stuff.

the TF Prime toys are very promising.
Animated had a very unique style but the toys were very well engineered.
The movie toys had their highs and lows but there are still a few around.

the TF Prime DVD isn't released here yet, but hopefully soon.
Comic trade paperbacks are definitely the most efficient way of picking up back issues.

keep asking questions, it looks like we're all here to answer.

and while $450 feels like a lot, if you're buying two of everything, you're going to need a lot more than that.:D
