I have come to the conclusion that I really like this guy. Despite the lack of paint aps where it counts (no emergency markings anywhere), the robot mode is a lot of fun. Although limited by truck kipple on his calves. The blades look just like his cartoon ones when attached to his arms and he has excellent shoulder and arm articulation.

My Main concerns are general Prime concerns; small size, lack of paints, NO INSIGNIA!!!! His blades' plastic reminds me of gummy bears and makes me hungry they are that soft. Plus despite the large gaps in his backpack and calves, there is nowhere to store his blades when not in use in robot mode. Come on Hasbro, you can do better than this!! Just a slight change in a tab on his back and you would have the perfect spot. Oh and no backpack aerial...:(

Still, I do like it, partly due to the cartoon, and he can be posed in many Ratchety poses. I find the transformation slightly unsatisfying for some reason I haven't yet put my finger on... I would love to see a Masterpiece version, or a quality Voyager.

Mmm, edible weapons. :p I love the way the hands fold back allowing the blades to act like an extension of his arms...Genius! Nice light-piping too if your photo is anything to go by. Love me some good light-piping. :D

As someone who doesn't own this toy yet, my biggest disappointment is the missing heart beat decal. It's the very first paint app that should have been applied as it's so iconic for Ratchet in both bot and alt modes. The strangest thing is they started the heart beat app (note the thin red line below the side window) but just didn't finish it off!!. Truly bizarre.

I read that as 'lack of pants'. I hate it when Transformers aren't wearing pants.

Is this toy you have here the same one you're reviewing? http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showpost.php?p=291603&postcount=191

In that photo it looks quite large.

Are they fake doors on his chest?

Well...I prefer to think that Ratchet is paranoid and likes to keep a spare set of doors handy just in case a Decepticon rips his other ones off. :p Doubles up as chest armour too!

And yep, that's the same toy. It is interesting that it looks large in my acquisitions photo. Mayhap a fish-eye thing going on. He stands about as tall as wheeljack, but vehicle mode looks small, as it's not as long as wheeljack and it should be bulky, but due to scale, just looks small. I have some comparison shots somewhere...

Oh and the light piping is excellent, just the tiniest bit of light manages to have him shining his bright blues at ya!

He is sooo tiny. He looks good though apart from the fake doors.

It's sad isn't it? Any one of us could probably get it right...

Anyhoo, I have a vid review and some photos as well as thoughts on my blog (http://tetstoys.blogspot.com.au/2012/03/tf-prime-deluxe-ratchet-review.html)

I have finally figured out why I wasn't so impressed with his Transformation. And this explains the same feeling I had for Cliffjumper as well. Due to the 'head reveal' gimmick, they have a solid chest, which features little to no transforming, so all you really transform are the arms and the legs.

I knew there was a reason (extra reason) why I preferred FE CJ over the normal one.

Oh and final plug, my unboxing video ;) (http://tetstoys.blogspot.com.au/2012/03/opening-figure.html)

It is sad. But it's because Hasbro doesn't take those photos. They send toys to professional photographers who then transform the toys - usually correctly, but sometimes not - then photograph them and send them back to Hasbro... who accepts them.

Notice this happens far more infrequently with Takara. I suspect Takara must either:
1: use in-house photographers
2: if they use external photographers, those photographers may try to pay more attention to the instructions - mind you, Hasbro's instructions can be quite poorly illustrated which doesn't help
3: Takara rejects photos of toys that aren't correctly transformed and demand that the photographers do it again (and the photography company would lose face and feel ashamed/dishonoured that they haven't done their job properly)

Ratchet's one of the those Transformers whose key selling point to me is the action figure style robot mode. I think he looks great in robot mode with nice shaping to the legs, chest and arms and a nice head mold. The weapons look good swapped in for his hands (although I'd only ever do this for one first). I don't know the cartoon character so I'm projecting the IDW Ratchet's persona onto the toy (and it generally fits well although IDW Ratchet would have a happier expression). The vehicle mode is not as nice, and I can understand the complaints about paint apps in that mode. But in robot mode, the use of red, white and grey is just about right and the robot mode is the winner here.

Better than I expected, but it is a very white toy and would benefit from more reds to break it up. The rear part of the vehicle mode is unpainted and looks unfinished. :( The lack of any emergency vehicle markings (i.e. cardiopulse) in vehicle is annoying, and the lack of any Autobot insignia is downright unforgivably frustrating. I know some people complained about TakTOM's TFP Arms Micron toys coming with stickers, but I would much rather this toy come with an Autobot logo sticker than with nothing at all!

The weapons are super soft, much like FE Voyager Optimus Prime's sword. While there could be more red paint apps, they are done well where they exist. The greys also work fine, and there are nice silver apps on the face and bumper which also helps to off-set the whites on the shins and belly.

I thought that only TakTOM's Ratchet had the two holes on the roof... I thought it was an add on for the Arms Micron, but Hasbro's has those holes too, which makes the vehicle mode look a bit unsightly. And considering that Ratchet comes with a pair of blades, I can't imagine why he would need to stick them on the top of his roof. Unless he wants to drive right between a large Decepticon's legs and slice open their... ya know. ;) I managed to get this at TRU for $23 on sale, so I'm happy with my purchase. Not sure if it's worth a full $30 though.

I tried to carefully peel off the small Autobot logo from my G1 Emergency Ratchet toy and transplant it onto TFPRiD Ratchet, but of course, whenever you peel off a sticker that's already been applied for ages, it ends up creasing and damaging the sticker. Some of it came off the backing, so I had to glue it back down. *sigh* Better than nothing I guess... I really should order some reprolabel insignias in case Hasbro releases more toys in the future without logos (I shouldn't have to... Hasbro should do their job right...)

Looks good, I can't wait to get hold of this guy.

I see what people are saying about the paint apps on the back, especially with respect to the heartbeat insignia. I think it might be a compromise between robot and vehicle modes since the back of the van make up his forearms.
I have seen a couple moded ratchets, sorry no links right now, where they have added the heartbeat sign and it's split around the forearm in robot mode.
the CG model has solid red there, and the solid red would look terrible on the back of the van. perhaps leaving it white is an overall more acceptable look for both modes.

I can understand why the forearms can't be totally red -- but I wouldn't mind broken up red from the pulse insignia. That would be acceptable to me. It would certainly look no worse than some of the random red bits on Wheeljack!!

And the lack of any paint apps on the back of the vehicle (e.g. tail lights/indicators etc.) looks really drab -- and difficult to understand/justify considering that there's no paint apps for the pulse insignia or Autobot logo. Often toys will lack paint apps in one area because of a design feature or extra paint app somewhere else -- and Ratchet has a sparse paint job and his only accessories are two really soft rubber knives. I can't imagine where, with the budget money that's saved from sacrificing these logos... unless it's that "automorph" head gimmick... but I find that hard to accept considering that we have many other Deluxe figures with better paint jobs and some kind of gimmick. :/

I was really looking forward to this one, turns out he's another disappointment (although no way near as crap as Arcee).

The vehicle mode. Well, it's an extremely bland looking red and white truck. That's not why I bought it though...

Robot mode is white. So veeeerrrrry white. Good points? The arms are nicely done (quite like this new wrap-around forearm idea) and the way you can attach the surgical blades is a clever little trick. The legs and head are also passable if not spectacular. Oh and he has waist swivel! Very nice.

It's just that, well, he looks very boring. Unlike Cliffjumper, Ratchet's fake chest is so obviously fake (to the point where he looks like a Revoltech figure). The white certainly doesn't help this. If anything it further accentuates how fake it looks. :( Small things that would bring this toy to life are missing eg. the faction logo, the heart pulse logo, transparency on the chest windows to make it look not quite as fake, perhaps a splash of black and yellow on his thigh lights etc. Another missed opportunity, bah!

Yeah, this toy desperately needs more colours (especially reds) to break the white up. And there appears to be no apparent reason why it doesn't have the extra paint apps. They've sacrificed the logo, the overall engineering is mediocre, and it has a fairly basic set of weapons (two very soft rubbery knives), and it's a rather small toy for a Deluxe. So I struggle to imagine why they couldn't afford to put more paint apps on this toy.

The thing that frustrates me about this toy - and the TFPRiD Deluxe line as a whole - is that they keep doing these cost-cutting measures and pumping out cheap looking/feeling toys, but still have the audacity to charge us the same RRP! :( :( You compare this with say Universe or Henkei Ratchet -- alright, it has the problem of the robot head looking downward, but other than that it has complex engineering, good paint apps (esp. on the Henkei which also has chrome), a solid plastic convertible weapon... and at the same Deluxe price point as TFPRiD Deluxe Ratchet. Guess which one is better value for money? ;)

And the freaking Cyberverse Legion Class figure has an insignia tampographed on it! Why not the Deluxe?!? I suspect that the Deluxes and Cyberverses are designed by different teams, and the Cyberverse team is paying more attention to what they're doing. Cyberverse Ratchet may not be the best Legion Class, but it's reasonably fair value for its price point, particularly compared to what the Deluxe version is offering for its price point. :o

Exactly. It's quite disheartening to see just how far the quality has diminished in such a short period of time. It wasn't that long ago that I bought RotF Lockdown, marvelling at his multi-jointed neck, near voyager sized robot mode and exquisite detailing and paint apps. Here we are a few years later with toys like Transformer Prime Ratchet and I'm sitting here scratching my head.

It seems to me like Hasbro just doesn't really care about the deluxe/voyager Transformers Prime toys. Another example: Why hasn't Voyager Breakdown been announced yet? Prime contains a relatively small cast of characters and I'm already worried that they're gonna pull a TFA Blackout on me. Gah! :p

...another reason why I don't like media-based TF toys. I much prefer it when Transformers are designed as toys first, then media characters later.

That looks a lot better, VERT! :D And it's what Hasbro should've done in the first place. We're paying Deluxe prices for this toy... give us value for our money! If they wanna skimp out on paints and leave it consumers to "DIY" the rest, then make the toys cheaper. But instead they give us less paint apps and charge us the same price.

And of course, hobby paints aren't cheap - then you gotta buy brushes, sealants etc. If you're a regular hobby painter, then it might be cost-effective, but if you're not, then you've effectively spent a lot more money and time doing Hasbro's job for them. Custom painting a toy to make a new character is one thing... having to paint a toy because it looks unfinished is aggravating to say the least. Imagine if someone bought this toy for $25 and decided to "finish" the paint job. Now they have to purchase:
+ x1 red hobby paint
+ x1 hobby brush
...how much is that gonna cost? Maybe an extra $10-15? (depending on the kind/brand of paint or brush) -- so in total they've spent $35-40 on their Deluxe Ratchet! And that's not even including purchasing yellow, orange and silver paints to do a similar job that you've done, or a purity seal to protect the paint job! All told one could purchase a Voyager Class with all that money spent on purchasing and touching up a single Deluxe Class toy!

IMO Hasbro needs to make these toys better, or make them cheaper.

Finally found Ratchet for under $25. He is, like all Prime toys tiny; however, he has an easy and different transformation and two strong modes, some fun weapons and lovely light piping.

I only bought the toy as I love Ratchet, but was pleasantly surprised by the solid bulk invests and obvious character the figure possesses. He'll fit in very nicely with the classics as a stand in until I can find a reasonably priced universe Ratchet to take its stead.

I really love his robot mode. I find you can pose him in some decent stances. Which is why I ended up getting him a couple of months back. After seeing some random photos on the internet of him.

As for the ambulance mode, not a giant fan. But I compare that to my likes with the robot mode, which is just far greater.

End run, well worth the $23.75 I spent to get him just for the robot mode.
