View Full Version : What Are The Next-Favourite Transformers Franchises?
Sky Shadow

I suspect G1/G2 and then Beast Wars are always going to win any polls here for the favourite Transformers franchise/toylines. But I'd be interested in seeing how the others pan out. In this thread I would like us to rank our favourite franchise from 1 (favourite) to 10 (least favourite) of the ten franchises listed below. Your first choice gets nine points and your tenth gets zero. Assuming more than one person actually participates, I'll tally things up as we go. Does that make sense?
(Disclaimer: I've left out anything beginning with "Generation" - i.e. 1 and 2 or "Beast Wars" - i.e. II and Neo. Or anything that's solely a reissue or direct homage to any of those. I've also left out War For/Fall Of Cybertron which has only had four and a half toys released so far. And Animorphs, Crossovers, First Transformers/1-2-3 Transformers/Go-Bots/Rescue Heroes/Rescue Bots. Because all those toylines are so awesome that it would be unfair to all the others.)
Okay, so the ten franchises you have to list from favourite (1) to least favourite (10) are the following:
1. Animated
2. Robots in Disguise/Car Robots
3. Beast Machines
4. Cybertron
5. Prime
6. Energon
7. Armada
8. Machine Wars
9. Alternators/Binaltech/Kiss Play/Alternity
10. Bay Movie
Even if you're not 100% sure, you must still rank them from 1-10 based on what you know of that franchise. (It's like an election - you must number all candidates on the ballot or your vote won't count.)
Happy voting!

I ranked prime as number 10 because I haven't got around to actually opening any of the toys I have and the only one I've seen in person out of the package is soundwave and 1 toy for me doesn't compare to the other lines. Also I've only seen 10 minutes of the first ep from the cartoon. I'm sure my opinion on it will change as I see more

1. Animated - The sow was a great combination of fun and seriousness that worked well with the medium it was presented in. The toys were fantastic and really pushed engineering principles, and gave us toys that looked like the highly stylised characters on TV.
2. Robots in Disguise/Car Robots - Fun TV show with quite amzing toys (for the time, some of them are quite limited in today's standards). It also brought me back into TFs after giving them up during Beast Machines.
3. Prime - Haven't seen the show, but the toys give me that sense of enjoyment and engineering wonder that I found in Animated
4. Alternators/Binaltech - Toys were fantastic (for the time) and showed that a decent toy line could work without show support. The idea ultimately led to us getting the Classics/Universe/Generations toy lines.
5. Cybertron - Quite good toys, decent show. Wasn't outstanding, but had quite a lot of very good things about it.
6. Bay Movie - Mass market apeal with decent toys with real life vehicle modes was pretty awesome for a while. (Comes a very close runner-up to Cybertron)
7. Armada - First true entry into the TF multiverse - a new generation of Transformers for a new generation of fans. The minicons were an awesome idea. Some gimmicks were hampered by minicon ports, but the play pattern established was a fantastic idea.
8. Beast Machines - Not bad. Didn't really get caught by the toys. Watched the show in recent years. Not bad, but not fantastic, and takes itself way too seriously
9. Energon - Had some great toys and concepts. Also had some pretty aweful toys that were severly hampered by the combining gimmick. Show was pretty forgettable.
10. Machine Wars - Basically a line of repaints with no story support. Decent repaints though.

3. Cybertron
4. The Movies
5. Robots in Disguise

7. Prime

I'm bad at organising things in the middle of lists. Maybe Prime should be above Armada? Maybe RiD should be above the movies? I dunno.

Since I guess the IDW comics are considered G1 and the Hearts of Cybertron has had no toys they don't count? If they do I need a revote to put them both in this list. Universe toyline also counts as G1 right? (even the original?)

Yes - everything G1 isn't part of the poll. The 2003ish Universe line was awesome and should probably be here, but because the Classics line kind of meandered into Universe, as a way of avoiding 'Universe-is-G1-Classicverse' voting patterns, Universe is not here. For the purposes of voting, consider this an election ballot of just those ten candidates.

Some of the above I enjoyed some I didn't, Just because something is rated low doesn't mean I didn't like it. Machine Wars figures I like but there wasn't anything(as in mythos)behind them and it was a really short lived line.

Looks about right to me. I thought the Movieverse would be a rank or two higher though.
I'd also expect TF;Prime to rise if you took the vote again in a year or two. That series seems to be popular with those that have watched it and there's little of the hate that Animated got (and overcame!).
I think some people, myself included are just indifferent to TF:Prime as the toys are only just starting to appear and the cartoon is hard to see. As more toys come out and the DVDs make it more accessible, the votes might be more favourable. Currently I just see it as "the cartoon based on the movie".

I thought RiD would be higher considering how those toys flew off shelves when it first came out!

They are very close though.
RID toys flew of the shelves because the were realistic vehicles, a much needed novelty after the Beast era. Also, a lot of fans here were tuned out back then and didn't come back until the movie (which is why I thought that line would be a bit higher). Those fans can only catchup with RID (see the who's Sky-Byte? questions in the Hall of Fame threads) but they saw Animated firsthand.
As great as RID is, there's a lot of repaints of toys from other eras in that line (part of the charm IMO) as well a redubbed cartoon, and that makes it a bit of a mish-mash, compared to the more consistent vision of Animated (thanks Derrick, Eric, etc).
