View Full Version : Hasbro MP Optimus coming to Australia October

Just rang up Hasbro Australia, asking if we will be getting the Masterpiece Optimus Prime here, since it will be in America soon (a ToysRUs exclusive).

From the product manager (via Customer Service, who put me on hold to ask) I was told that it was offered to retailers here, but none would take it at this time...

I've now rung up ToysRUs, just in case... and it was lucky I did because Hasbro gave me the wrong information. (looks like the retailers know more about Hasbro's products than Hasbro does)

Masterpiece Optimus Prime WILL BE HERE.
ToysRUs have two shipments coming in. One in late September (in stores early October), one in November (in stores for Christmas).

Price will be AU$150.

Indeed it is! I believe these are some of the differences (correct me if I'm wrong)

- Different paint apps
- Shorter/modified smokestacks
- Different packaging (looks to be half the size of its Takara counterpart)
- Looks like the plastic is different quality

At $150, I reckon it'll be difficult to justify for non collectors. The box has a nice window display, but looks like it's easily dwarfed if placed side by side with any MISB modern leader class transformer

$150 is good price, but probably will wait for a sale, since Rodimus went on sale a few times (and the original price wasn't too high either).

-Roller is dark blue/purple/whatever as opposed to the grey TT version.

Seriously though, to anyone on the fence about getting this: don't be. It's an amazing piece and well worth the price tag.
Maybe import it from the US if you can get decent postage though, we're almost at dollar equity atm.

I've heard good things about this mould, but couldn't justify the expense after already paying big bucks for MP-04 (Takara MP Prime with Trailer).

At this price I will bite though - unless I can get it cheaper from RK or ebay.

I agree. And while I like the minimalist packaging personally, it's not going to stand out against all your other pretty leader class/voyager products which are vastly cheaper as well.

Unless stock numbers are low, I'd say we have a shelfwarmer.

It's really nice, and if I hadn'r already bought the 20th anniversary prime and an MP-04 I'd be all over it like something something,

Unfortunately though, I have both of those versions and I can't justify the expense, not when there is so much other product coming down the line that I am definitely going to want to buy. Prime figures, FOC figures, FOC the game and a playstation to play it on, etc, etc.

They can call this Masterpiece Prime all they want but I don't consider it to be in the same league / scale. More than happy with the original MP Prime which side by side with MP Megatron looks great. This MP Prime with it's dull grey plastic looks like a cheap knock-off. Pass for me. Kudos to Hasbro for bringing it out here though.

How much would it be in the states?

griffin
11th May 2012, 08:07 PM
Unlikely to be above US$100, as it seems to be the ceiling price for TFs toys over there (to get retailers to take them and profit from them).

We might get quite a few TFs toys here at $100 plus, but it is quite unheard of in America.

$150 is gonna be a hard sell to parents. Looks like it's purely aiming at collectors only. Still it's cheaper than TT but wishing for a lower price.

It won't be just collectors, but also adults who have a casual interest in Transformers but aren't fans. And I think $150 is a fair price for this kind of MP by Australian MP price standards (remember that MP04 sold here for $200 and MP Grimlock sold for $150 etc.).

Still it's cheaper than TT but wishing for a lower price.
Cheaper is always better, but as you said, it is _significantly_ cheaper than TakaraTOMY's version. TakTOM's version retails for 23100JPY which converts to $288. And that's not including postage. So at nearly half the cost of TakTOM's, I find $150 to be an acceptable price for this MP in Australia, even despite the cheaper colours that Hasbro have chosen.

I'm hoping to get more value for money compared to the $150 I spent on MP Grimlock. That's the most I've ever spent on a Masterpiece -- only that it's just one robot (no trailer or roller etc.) and engineering wise it's relatively simple for a MP. I've never seen MP-10 IRL so I can't comment on its engineering, but even if it's simpler than MP01, given that it comes with a trailer and Roller (which MP04 didn't), it seems like superior value for money. Sure the TakTOM colours are nicer... but I'm not willing to spend double the cost to get one.

Sky Shadow made a good point about the Hasbro grey on another thread. On close inspection (a large image) the figure does look pretty cheap when it comes to plastic (Hasbro grey) and painted detailing. However it isn't as bad as other figures so it may still be worth the cost given the trailer is included.

Usually I opt for the TakaraTOMY version if I consider it to be nicer looking than the Hasbro version, because usually the prices are comparable. Take say Henkei vs. Universe. Henkei Deluxes typically retailed for 2310JPY ($29) -- so about the same as the RRP for a Deluxe here. At basically the same price, I definitely went with the Henkei version for a lot of figures, like say Prowl. For about the same price Henkei Prowl gives me chrome rifle, chrome missiles and chrome spoiler. Ditto Alternators... I paid 4980JPY ($62) for BT-1 Smokescreen. Then later I remember seeing Alternators Smokescreen at Kmart for $55. Okay, my BT Smokescreen may have been $7 dearer, but it's die-cast metal and has a much nicer and more realistic shade of blue.

But with MP10... okay yes, the Hasbro version looks nastier, but it's $138 cheaper than the TakTOM version! Same with MP Rodimus... yes the TakTOM version is nicer looking; the Hasbro paint apps are positively bone lazy by comparison... but the Hasbro version initially retailed here at a price that's $140 cheaper than the TakTOM version! (HAS RRP = $80, TT RRP = 17640JPY ($220)). So given the considerable savings that would be made with the Hasbro version... The colours on the TakaraTOMY version definitely looks nicer... but not "pay extra $138" nicer. ;)

Yeah that makes sense and all but why do they persist with that horribly dull grey? Why is it so hard to do a more silver or even normal grey plastic? They have done it before and on occasion so why not do it all the time?

Fans have been hating the Hasbro grey and voicing against if for nearly a decade so surely Hasbro knows it's unpopular. I do not understand why they persist with it as I can't imagine another color being much more expensive since the plastic still needs to be dyed and molded.

Would it be possible to do a group buy from US and ship it here and still be cheaper than local TRU. Unless they have a pre-xmas sale like Roddy like last time then it's hard to beat.

Yeah, the fact that it's widely referred to by fans as "Hasbro Grey(TM)" says it all. Perhaps someone can ask this question at the next BotCon Hasbro Q&A? They've been using this crappy grey plastic for what... 11 years now? (started with RiD IIRC)

Shipping could be a pain though. And it assumes TRU America goes with a $100 price point.

Surprise, surprise. Hasbro Australia does't have a clue.

To give them the benefit of the doubt, perhaps nobody expressed interest in acquiring it through Hasbro AU. Instead TRU AU is potentially sourcing it through its US headquaters and their exclusive deal.

If that is the case, it raises interesting questions regarding Hasbro AU's wholesale price, and whether it made it cost prohibitive for stores to stock MP Prime.

Just wondering the differences between this one and the very first MP Optimus Prime (apart from the extras - trailer, roller, spike figure, etc.) ?

(It's just that I need to save funds for that third party "Devastator" figure...)

It's a brand new mould, in scale with MP Grimlock, Hot Rod, and Starscream, as well as any future MP releases.

Different transformation scheme, with other hidden bonuses, and generally greater show likeness.

I could probably buy a couple more if they are around this arvo when I go. If you are keen for me to buy an extra one or two and hold it for you pickup (in Sydney), please post here - I plan to check at 2.30 pm Sydney time before I head off. Obviously no guarantees but will try my best

I also have the discount voucher so will see how it goes.

I called Miranda and some chick that seemed to not know what Optimus Prime is went to check for me after I gave her a description. First she said they had the $40 one and I said that wasn't it, then she said that there was also a $120 one (referring to it as "The big one"), I asked if it had a trailer and she said yes.

I was told that there's only 2 per assortment, so it doesn't take much to make them sell out. TRU Head Office told me that all their stores were scheduled for another delivery either yesterday or today, but paletting/shelving doesn't occur over weekends, so there's a chance that IF the toys arrived on Friday and haven't been paletted/shelved on Fri night, they might be in back storage.

So based on what TRU Head Office told me, if anyone is doing the call arounds or happen to be popping into a TRU I'd recommend asking them to check the back room just in case. If not, try again on Monday.

When I called Miranda, the girl told me they had lots of them, luckily I asked her to set aside three as when I arrived, there were only two remaining on the shelves.

Hopefully you are right about a second shipment, that way anyone who missed the current wave can have another chance at it.

I didnt mention the discount voucher :D
Didn't want to mention it too.

If they are being snapped up by scalpers, I'd have expected some to have been listed on ebay by now... but none were there when I just looked.
At least that's a good thing, if they are going to good homes (collectors/fans).

And be aware that there is supposed to be another shipment next month, if you miss out on this one.
Still none on ebay, that's good. But I didn't realize there's really a lot more TF enthusiasts/collectors than the people on the board. That's why I'm surprised. Imagine 16 being sold out in one store.

Unfortunately, the voucher isn't valid when the next shipment comes in. Otherwise, I wouldn't have tried to catch the current batch.

Just spoke to the TRU on the Gold Coast, and they mentioned that MP Optimus will be in the next catalogue (not on sale, just promoting it), and was really annoyed that Head Office was only sending them, and most other stores, a small amount that didn't even last a day.
He even recommended that we call up Head Office to (complain) question their wisdom... or to see if the "toxic" unwanted elements of Transformers lately has contaminated retailers' decisions, in that they didn't want to risk having more shelf-warming expensive Transformers costing them money.
Unfortunately, the stores themselves are being hassled by disappointed customers, and missing out on sales, based on the over-conservative decision by Head Office.

I was also told that there might be more arriving to the stores over the next few days... so if you miss out, check again until Wednesday. If no more arrive by then, the next lot won't be until November (if my original source was correct about that shipment).

Goes to show that Hasbro's management of the overall line has been horrific in the last couple of years. People are not buying the line because they don't want Transformers, it was that the toys they were putting out on the shelf were simply bad and not worth the cost.

When a good toy is released, it sells.

Defcon
13th October 2012, 07:16 PM
I guess the logical reason the initial stock toysrus stores recieve is conservatively small because they plan on promoting it in a catalogue later and want to keep plenty in reserve for that. Also its selling fast because 1. even at full price its going to move, because its still reasonable. 2. The discount voucher is a big motivator. 3 This toy was released by takara overseas for twice as much!! and nearly everyone that collects is highly anticipating its release.

If the toy was a leader class bumblebee repaint the demand would be close to nil.
When Masterpiece Grimlock was released, they had small quantities as well. But didn't move as quickly but did sell out. I can understand them not wanting to over order on something, they have to get it close to right.

It really sux that the shelves are filled with so many gimmicky products, really there needs to be more focus. Shelfwarming stuff can only poison the brand. If I was going off retail alone I would consider the brand dead!

Contacted Toys R Us Aus thru FB and told them that I was disappointed that I wasn't able to use the voucher due to MP OP being out of stock. Reported the difficulty in reserving toys because staff don't know what it was since it's new. And staff telling me that there wasn't any left when actually there was so I missed out.

They're response was that they didn't have a reservation policy. Asked for details and that they will investigate it. TRU chatswood should have sold me MP-OP then instead of pulling them off the shelves.

Anyway, I responded with I'm fine with reservations. What I'm not ok with is telling me there's none, when there is actually stock. I just wanted to reserve so that I don't waste the long drive just to get a toy. I was hoping they'd offer me another 25% voucher and ensure that the next shipment would have enough supply. They responded in the afternoon 5:30pm and responded at 10pm.

Well, I don't think anything will happen with their investigation. But it doesn't hurt to vent  ;)

My friend is looking to pick up the MP TC, when did you see the lot of MP TC?

I was going to call them but I couldn't be bothered to be honest - I already have the MP-04 masterpiece and I'm pretty happy with that. Went to TTP TRU and they removed the shelf tag for MP10 which suggests either of two things: it's a deleted line or that it won't be coming in for a while.

Does anyone know if we'll see a re-stock? Or is that it for Aus?

Apparently there were sightings in one of the Sydney store yesterday so I guess they are restocking for Xmas.

I have emailed TRU and they have said that they will be getting 2 shipments in mid to late December. They said that they will be getting quite a bit for Xmas.

It seems that most states are getting plentiful amounts now. Won't be long until Vic stores are getting more, although I wish our TRUs were a little better in handling here. Still good news.:D

Wife just got my MP Prime from Townsville TRU for my birthday. Items must have just arrived today because they got it from out the back and looked very casefresh. There was no price or space for them on the shelves.

Affirmative.
They were hard to come by in November.
Sorry man.

Best bet is to contact TRU head office and see if they can locate one for you.

Don't like your chances though.

Bidoofdude

TRU head office can't help, I'm afraid. There's barely any left, I think. Maybe like 2-3 in NSW or QLD but that's all, I think.
Join the club. :(

Thanks for the response.

I'm going to tell my self that either hasbro or takara will want to milk the mold as much as they can and we might get a new release in a few years time. It's taught me not to sleep on Masterpiece when I have the money to secure them at least. Sideswipe's part of that list too...

For anyone that is still hunting down MP Prime I located a small cache located at Toys R Us Bankstown NSW.
As of posting there should still be 4 left, they are hidden out the back, you just have to ask for them ;)
Or if anyone needs it I might be able to go on a small mission to acquire another, just shoot me a PM.

I think we had the one of the lowest release numbers across Australia not that's saying much as the release numbers were pretty abysmal in all states :(

Looks like Takara is up for another restock of MP10 -

Hopefully it'll bring secondary market's price down

Not definitely buying, but it would be appreciated.:o;)Well, if Sinnertwin's intel is correct there are still two left (wonder who bought the other two? there were four left when I was last there ) in Bankstown.
I might be going there in the morning to try and pick up one for another member so I can do some recon.
Pity I don't have internet on my phone or I could post my findings and get updates :/
If funds and stock permits I'll get a spare, but no promises to anyone...

edit: didn't end up going, will look at going tomorrow instead

I'll still give them a call on Wednesday just in case it was a bad April fools joke lol :p
Still it's not outside the realm of possibility as the Mackay store in QLD burned down last November, just wondering why they would have waited so long to do the transfer.
Well if true I hope they are going to nice new homes, and apologies to those that asked I have a look for them.
