View Full Version : GIJoe 2 (Movie) pushed back 9 months!

I was only just watching a trailer for the next GIJoe movie last week when seeing Avengers, as it was scheduled for release in a months time.

Today though, at the last minute (and at the surprise to the Director himself), Hasbro have pushed it's release back 9 months to March 2013 (http://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/paramount-delays-gijoe-retaliation-until-march-2013/24904/).
Their excuse - they only just decided to retrofit it to 3D, to cash in on a growing popularity on the format (perhaps it was expected to be a short-lived fad).

Even the toys were already in US stores, ready for its release in theaters, so I'd imagine a lot of US retailers are not happy about having stock that won't move for another 9 months.

Hasbro Australia are probably glad they didn't have the headache of dealing with angry retailers, and sitting on later waves that stores wouldn't be wanting for another year. All those toys not yet in stores would have already been made, and waiting to go to retailers.

Having a 3D version should have been decided early on, and stuck with it. (which was something Michael Bay was at least good at - deciding to use the format, and committing to it)

I feel bad for the GIJoe fans who were looking forward to the movie in five weeks time, only to now have to wait almost a whole year for it.
Imagine if that had happened with one of the Transformers Movies...

i would of seen it in 2d anyway i dont care for 3d much.....how annoying and disapointing...

(maybe they were also thinking that it wouldnt pull as much $$$$ because of the compitition it is up against)

I thought they wanted it to coincide with the Rock wrestling at next years Wrestlemania?

No great loss. As I can remember, the last GI movie toys sat around for ever in the toy stores (Toyworlds selling then half price) and the movie itself was rather blah also.

I guess the upside is that now the toys are coming out before the movie there's a better chance that Joe fans can get the toys before newfans

Converting movies to 3D instead of filming in 3D never works e.g. Clash of the Titans.

That's a dog-act by Hasbro to treat fans of this franchise like that.

Yeap, post production 3D films are the height of lameness. I am more annoyed that the film has been pushed back for such a cheap money making ploy, then I am for the significantly increased wait.

Delaying the movie for nearly a year just so they can make it 3D? That's lunacy. Avengers was successful because it was good not because of the 3D. By the time this is released, no one would have cared because they would have killed any hype for it by disappointing people and making them wait.

There must be some other reason or Hollywood Execs have gotten even more retarded than I figured. Nevertheless, it seems they don't have much confidence in the film itself if they feel the need to delay it nearly a year just so they can squeeze a few more dollars out of it with a 3D gimmick.

I wonder what they are going to do with all the already manufactured and some released toys?

Aaar, nuts. I was actually going to go see this one too.

Now, I guess I'll see it next year. Won't be going to the 3d version though. A few movies have made the transition from 2 to 3d ok, but more often than not they look rubbish.

I still remember wallking out of Pirates 4 and the first thing I said was "Why was that in 3d??" This'll be the same.

3D never worked for me so I think this postponing is just pointless. I wear glasses and the combined effect of the two just doesn't seem to work.

Held back until next year apparently. The stuff that has already been released will stay on shelves till it's gone.

I bought one movie figure on Ebay before this hooha started so will have at least one movie toy to review.

Overall I'm not to worried about the figures being delayed there are enough pricey items to get this year, not least of which is the SDCC exclusive figure.

Bah on the 3D though!

3D is a gimmick. I believe it will fade away eventually. Why it's taken so long I have no idea.

I fail to see how Hasbro think this will make them alot more money.

From all the Mattel ranting about slow selling toys (less than 2 weeks) apparently storing them is very expensive and not cost effective.

You left out the part where Mattel condescends to us about not being grateful for the gift that is their product.

General consensus is this seems to pretty much signal GIJoes's death at retail.
a few posts back it seemed like we aren't even getting the toys here.

More details on why this film was delayed:

As suspected, it wasn't just about the '3D'.

3D works better when the film is actually shot with 3D cameras, rather than filming it with conventional cameras and then later post-converting it to 3D. As griffin said, the decision should have been made in pre-production, not in post-production.

That's why Michael Bay used long distance and wide angle shots with Dark of the Moon, because it had already been decided before shooting began that it would be done in 3D, whereas TF1 and ROTF had lots of really tight and close-up shots. Man... being outclassed by Michael Bay... ouch. :p

Looks like it may have nothing to do with 3D and all to do with a disappointing plot (in case you slept through the first GI Joe, guess what we have in store!)

I'm hoping though that they continue with more toys, because some of them looked just awesome. They've got to replace the regular GI Joe line with something or risk losing collectors.

(possible spoilers)

History is certainly repeating itself with the Duke character. The original 1987 Movie had the character killed off, but a late dubbing edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G.I._Joe:_The_Movie#Duke.27s_recovery) (after seeing the bad reaction of Optimus' death in the Transformers Movie, Hasbro didn't want the same to happen with GIJoe fans) had a redubbing of Doc saying that Duke was going to make it, instead of Duke was dead.

Now it is being alleged that the character in this movie may have been meeting the same fate (I don't know if it is true) and the extra scenes could be to have him survive by the end of the movie.
It's like a cursed character.

So it came down to a box-office war between Channing Tatum as Duke, and Channing Tatum as Male Stripper?

Know which one I'd like to see more. :p

Can't he be both?

Maybe they could work the stripper into Dukes back story.

You might as well considering how Channing Tatum was trying so hard not to laugh/smile when he said 'Rex, what have you done to her!?!' when he was meant to be shocked in ROTC...
