First thing I've noticed though, your intro is pretty long. Sounds alright so far!

Yeah, TFW2005 really have some strict rules - Best inquire with the relevant Mod/s over there to see where it could be posted. ;):)

how'd it turn out dude? you'll be right this week :)

It came out quite well, I'd have to agree with KillingSpoon on the length of the intro though (I also believe that legally one can only use a maximum of 30secs of a song before official permission & royalties have to be sought :o). :)
Well, hopefully I'll be better this week - One can only hope. :p

Indeed, it'll likely be Transformers heavy but is certainly open to other lines & franchises; Also note peoples that "Shooting The Sh#t" is not the future coming "OTCAst: Transformers Radio Australia" Podcast that is in planning. ;)

Okay, so I got through it.
I'm going to keep this brief as I have a lot to do.

Very well done, I agree with Hursti though. 20 minutes more prep time on his behalf would have been good! That being said, you guys both did well to keep the sh#t flowing :p

'We're at the 2.5 hour mark, so we should wrap up soon'
>45 minutes later
'Yeah, so this has been the first podcast. Stay tuned!'

Also, I thought that you left the microphones on after you finished, haha! You got me!

Seriously though, there is enough humour to keep my interest up and your topics were interesting. Very well done!

I paralleled what you (Kalel) talked about with regards to listening to podcasts whilst driving. During the final half hour I realised that I wasn't actually listening and then laughed

Indeed, this is our 1st one out of the stalls so there is much improvement to be made but constructive & fair criticism like this is exactly what we need to make it better. ;):)

I believe our next episode, covering the 3rd Party Explosion from TFCon, will be a step forward in improvement.

Err, that being said this has introductions/inspirations etc etc

Indeed, there are sections in the 1st episode that won't be in following eps unless Guest Hosts are appearing; As I mentioned, alot of it is my fault as I only had 20mins Prep prior to recording and I only found out what we were recording 10-15mins prior to that. :o

After all, practise makes perfect and no one is perfect their 1st time off the blocks.

I've downloaded it, but 3 hours is a huge commitment to listen to!

The podcasts I follow tend to go for about 45-75 minutes per ep. Two hours of two men talking non-stop is a bit of a marathon. That's longer than an average movie!

If you record a podcast and it's really long, maybe have a think about breaking up into two editions and publish them a few days apart? Or stop after a hour and a bit, and come back to the topics you didn't get to discuss a few days later and you'll be fresh and ready to go again.

Anyway just some thoughts. :)

Not to make you feel old dude, but a 'Radio Show' is exactly how I explain Podcasts to my Parents :o:p - But that's really exactly what it is, just hosted on the Internet & available at any time. ;):)

Hey KelEl and Hursticon,

I've listened to both your episodes now, and I'm hanging for the third.

(Please take the following with consideration that Mrs UltraMarginal is away and I'm tanked up on my new drink of choice "Bulkeads Bliss (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?p=316405#post316405)" )

My critiques:
I love that there is finally an Aussie based Transformers podcast even if it's not exclusively transformers. Australianisms like "yea naa" make my day.

Hursti, you keep saying "indeed" the next thing I expect to hear is "Jafa Kri!!" or Colnel O'Niell saying "hey Kids" :D

Overall I very much enjoy your podcast, time isn't really a concern to me as I listen to podcasts on the way to work and back with is a 90 minute round trip each day. I use the beyond pod podcast player on my android phone, it pauses as soon as it'e unplugged from the car stereo and only continues when I press play. (awesome software if you have an android phone I totally recommend it.)

To give you an idea of where I'm comng from my podcasts of choice are as follows:

ESPN: Baseball Today
Radio Free Cybertron
TF Wire
Seibertron.com Twincast
This week in tech
wtf@tfw
All Things Transformers
And of course "Shooting the Sh#t"

I don't listen to much stuff... :rolleyes::o

Anyway, your last podcast with the third party round up was pretty good, it just seemed to drag a little around the third party section, we are all intersted in third party gear but when all you have to talk about is a couple images, perhaps you don't need to talk about the one picture for more than a couple minutes or so, you start to repeat yourself or ramble. you did however make a couple interesting observations that I then only noticed after you had pointed them out, this is after I'd spent a couple lunchtimes at work pooring over the pictures myself.

your reviews/impressions of items you have picked up/have in hand/or there are plentiful pictures with enough info to not require too much guessing, is much more interesting to listen to.

One of the drawbacks of the TFW podcast is they often discuss something till it's a beaten dead horse that's been pushed over a waterfall into a lake full of pirahna. careful you don't start doing this too often as it really slows down the flow of the 'cast. sometimes it does yield an iteresting insight or comment but it may be after 10 minutes of them repeating themselves.

Seibertron have lately been a bit disjointed due to there being too many "voice jokes " by Jon 3.0. I generally find him very entertaining but a lot of less experienced performers take every opportunity to try to be funny when sometimes its better to skip a few to make the most out of the other occasions. sometimes he gets a bit much and smothers the topic. be aware of this with any guests you bring on and don't be afraid to constructively reign them in, it will be better for the podcast and should help them develop professionally.

One of my biggest beefs with any podcast is recording levels.
some times there is a particular member of the cast that is super quiet or super loud so that in order to hear everyone at some point your eardrums are bleeding from the loud portion. Try to avoid this if you can. I'm fairly tanked right now but I seem to recall KalEl that you are a little quieter than Hursti. it might be the other way around though. I also realise that you are working with a "limited" budget, that precludes the use of expensive software.

See what you can do about podcast Data Volume. the Baseball today podcast I listen to is generally about an hour long, it is in crisp clear stereo and usually no more than an 8MB download. I realise they have the backing of ESPN but surely it's not too hard to avearge out sound levels and compress a stereo sound file. Obviously the quality of Microphone and software used to record effects this and might be outside of your budgetory constraints. but something to consider. for me, the seibertron twincast podcast is the worst offender as they have many members and some are very quiet relatively and often downloading their podcast requires several attempts and I end up spending 500 or so MB of my 2GB quota getting hold of their 70 to 100 MB file something to do with their server droping out and restarting. Yet to have this problem with the shooting the sh#t podcast.

I have really enjoyed your first two Podcasts, there were some slow moments but overall thoroughly great.
I'd be most happy to join in, I don't yet have skype though I do have a usb headset with a mic.

It might also help the flow of the podcast if you structure it a little more. the radio free cybverton podcast if very good, they have very distinct segments which helps maintain flow but at the moment it's a little too segmented. which breaks it up a little too much for my liking.

don't feel any need to do comic reviews, I get the trades so any podcast that I listen to that reviews the individual issues tends to get fast forwarded through.

I really like disussions about the latest episodes of TF:Prime, or latest toys, I hope you cover Fall of Cybertron but don't give away anything soon as I'm still working through the campaign.:o

Something I've noticed about transformers fandom over the last couple years is an extreme level of negativity.
This is a Golden era for Transformers fans, we've just had 3 worldwide blockbuster motion pictures that have spawned several toy lines, some complex, some not so much. A leader class toy that literally takes 20 minutes or so to transform because that's how complex it is!
A tv series that while stylised, ushered in a new era of screen accuracy in toys.
Masterpiece transformers that are essentially Quad changers or so vehicle accurate, that with the right photographer you could be fooled into thinking it's a photo of a real truck
A general toy line that encompasses re-imagineings of early designs and modern engineering, bringing vehicle modes of real aircraft and cars that Engineers(me) are happy to display on their shelf at work.
A new tv series that is the most visually/aurally and technically impressive show ever, where new toys like wheeljack are both elegant, simple and inspiring all at the same time. That vehicle mode is actually a Lancia Stratos concept. "Nerdgasm" (which is slightly less earthshattering than a Hurstigasm).

Aside: Im slightly less impressed by the colour images of MP soundwave than I was by the uncoloured prototype images. I don't know why this is, I shoul dbe walking around with permanent trouble standing up straight. "nerd Boners have so many applicatinos (http://www.cad-comic.com/cad/20120829)"

There are toys of frickin Computer game characters!! and they are very good. especially SHOCKWAVE. I'm hanging to get hold of SDCC FOC BRUTICUS. I have a buddy who's currently working in the states who has volunteered to be my plastic crack mule. ( Dear Adam, you ROCK)

less than ten years ago, the best we as a fandome could hope for was "unicron trilogy toys" (sad face) every time I passed through a toy department I was dissapointed. I did pick up a cannonball and a "somthing somethign" (A green sedan with two rectangular rockret launchers.)

People give Has Tak a hard time for not producing something like TFC Hercules, realistiically though HasTak could not produce something like this for the mass retail market if things like a"dop Test" are real. It's just too big and heavy. they should be given props for a figure like TFPrime wheejack an dBreakdown. Masterpiece Soundwave and Sideswipe.

the fandom seem s impatient, for more combiners and G1 Homages. realisticlly though, this stuff needs time, time to be developed and produces, time to be spear out so it's not all produced at the same time , time for the collwectors wallet to come up for a breath between masterpieces and prime characters.

Personally , between the Transformers Collectors club subscriptions and regular retail releases and mastepieces and non western releases like Breakdown, I just don't have the money spare for anything third party, I'm struggling to find the monfey for the ccss.

I love transformers, Science fiction and all the relatecd toys, I love listening to podcasts that cover these passions ov mine/it's like a morning radio for nerds (and I mean that in the most positive way possible)

keep up the good work, I'd love to get involved if you could find room for me.
r4ock on and all the best for future episodes.

Im really glad you are enjoying it!
As time goes on I am learning more about the "technical" side of the podcast game and obviously smoothness with follow.
As for you joining in, i'd love to have you onboard, download skype and let me know your details in a pm. We can talk a few times prior to recording to build fluidity and report. Also sometimes hursti isn't available so if it works out with you, you may become a regular as i'd like to record weekly :)

As for the over use you talk of, i try to just keep it as natural as possible. Not try to be funny but just let it happy etc. Im not worried to much as it will find its own fan-base.

I'll see about Skype in the next week and let you know how I go. I won't commit to being a regular, but i'd be keen as to be a guest a couple times.

The over use of character voices/humour really only applies to the Twincast at the moment. My mentioning it above is really only a future caution, something to be aware of moving forward. interjected jokes, funny moments and occasionally losing track due to a funny tangent is great listening.

I am yet to listen to Pre-order 66 but I'm guessing I might need to at some time in the near future.:D

I'm new to podcasts and was surprised at how long it was, it took me a few days to segment the whole 'cast, but I was entertained :) Will catch up with the next episode(s) in the coming weeks as I'm in the process of moving and have to live off mobile broadband :o

I'm fairly tanked right now but I seem to recall KalEl that you are a little quieter than Hursti. it might be the other way around though.

This is a bit silly, but based on reading posts from the both of you in the last couple of months, my initial impressions were that KalEl was the more vocal one and Hursti was the quieter one :p
However I found the flow to be quite cohesive with KalEl making succinct summaries of Hursti's thoughts :)
Looking forward to further growth ;)

Well, I did preface my statement with "I'm quite tanked":D
I was more referring to the perceived recording levels and while this podcast has been pretty good, there are others that sometimes are not and I think it's worth watching out that they don't fall into that trap. Recording every member of a conversation using different hardware over a free internet service and getting pretty even levels in the final edit can't be easy.

Hi guys. I've just finished listening to Episode 1.

It was long, but because you guys spoke in an easy-going, casual style, it helped me get through the entire thing.
Not your fault or anything but I did find myself tuning out on the non-TFs topics (Predator, Power Rangers... etc). It was a long first episode so maybe that didn't help.
I found the talk on TFs toys quite informative.
My 2c (I think KalEl brought this topic up at one point): I am one living example of a TFs fan who did NOT grow up with G1, but it is still the series I am most fond of, despite all the errors, etc. so I think there's something about that show that Transfans are drawn to that goes beyond people's personal childhood experiences of it.

I seem to be in the minority but I do think you guys should come up with a new name.

"Shooting the Sh#" is too generic. It's a phrase that doesn't tell you anything about what the podcast is, what it might discuss, who it is.

There's also other (http://www.facebook.com/shootintheshitpodcast) podcasts (http://www.myspace.com/shoottheshit1) called this or with episodes called this.

And frankly I don't see why you need a swear word in your show name. (I've got no issue with swearing within the show, my favourite podcast, TOFOP, drops the f-word and c-bomb aplenty, but they didn't call their show TOFOC.)

I can't think of an alternative because my mind's a bit blocked at the moment, but just throwing it out there because someone else might have one. Maybe there's a recurring phrase or topic or something from your shows that might make a good substitute name? Something that makes it more meaningful to the listeners? Something that might make people want to take a chance downloading a show in which each episode is feature-film length (and I'm talking James Cameron feature film length!) that "shooting the sh#t" doesn't.

I don't mind the title, I didn't even know that another podcast had the same name - but there are so many podcasts out there it didn't surprise me much that there was a namesake.

The title does make me giggle as it suggests something coarse but really the show is about toys haha.

Is it too late to change the title? I don't mind it the way it is - the fact that a podcast exists in the first place is good enough for me~!!

Megatron
25th September 2012, 09:05 PM
What are your thoughts on this listeners?

I agree with Paulbot in that the title is too generic and doesn't give any clue as to what the podcast may be about. Actually the first thing I thought of when I read the title was that it could have something to do with Micheal Bay (probably because his "Shoot for the Edit" forums has a similar sounding name). Otherwise I wouldn't really know what it's trying to convey by shooting the s***. Sorry. But I think it's a minor point and it wouldn't take much for creative people such as yourselves to come up with something different.

Out of interest how did you come up with the title? Is there a good story behind it?

myself and hursticon were brainstorming names. Talking sh#t about toys, then one of us said "shooting the sh#t about toys" hence shooting the sh#t: the toy podcast.

Megatron
25th September 2012, 10:12 PM
Ah ok. Well to be fair the full title does make it clearer (Shooting the Sh#t: the Toy Podcast). I don't mind it really. I think if you guys are happy with it then it's fine. ;) Either way I'm looking forward to listening to Episode 2 tomorrow at work.

What are your thoughts on this listeners?

I'll be honest, I am not too hot on the title either. I also found it a bit too generic and the swear word on the title did at first give off the wrong impression when I first heard it as I wasn't even sure if this was a toy related podcast (I also thought it was something Bay related). Then some time later, I decided to open the thread and read about it and learned what it actually is.

I have gotten used to the title now so I don't mind it if it continues and I have also noticed other toy podcasts with odd random titles so this sort of thing seems to be the norm. Anyways, don't mind if the title stays and don't mind if it changes.

what do you think of the new intro?

sorry late reply, haven't really been ale to listen to it again til now that Im on day off. Yeah, not too big on the new intro, I prefer a more livelier intro kinda like when Im listening to a radio in FM/AM ... the intro just didnt appeal that much to me...

A few comments to add from the 3rd podcast

Gaia Unicron - meh.... I agree the toy is a step down from the awesome toy that was years ago, even Cybertron tank Unicron is better than this.

Hulk - for accessories erm I dunno.... mebbe a spare set of pants hehehhe he keeps ripping them apart anyhow hahahahahah

Custom of the week - That is a very appropriate recolour of the toy. Since the toy suffers from short toy syndrome anyways - just the right size for Optimus Primal... again something Hastak wouldn't come up with now... shame

OK, so has he tried/recieved an opinion from Hasbro or Takara on 3rd party.
if so, do they mind the smaller 3rd party material that adds to an existing toy?

Has he previously collaborated with Hasbro or Takara on another book? if so, how does he compare collaborating with the 3rd party companies against collaborating with Takara/Hasbro?

Congrats on scoring an interview dude, looking forward to hearing it!

My question would be:

Given your background in Product Development & Marketing; what would be the steps that you'd recommend to a 3rd Party Company if they were to set out on developing their own IPs, that didn't rely on borrowing from already established & trademarked properties?
Such as creating & building the product's narrative or mythos, and what the best medium would be to convey it to the desired audience/demographic?

That's how we do it dude :); we get together on Skype about 20-45mins prior to recording the audio (Via a software program called Audacity) and "Shoot the sh#t" from there, recording all the while and when we've called the episode to a close Kal_El then edits the audio so it flows nicely like a radio show should. ;)

That was very entertaining. I must admit I wasn't expecting the eye surgery speech but it sounded like it went well and there was some really good stuff in the latest podcast.
Particularly liked Hursti's: "Yeah, unfortunately mate" thing. Very funny.:D:cool:

well, you know me, I like to talk transformers at least, and my mic is just a Logitech headset, but I've put some foam over the mouthpiece to make it a little clearer. :D
