OK, I need to consult the infinite wisdom of the oracle that is the Decision Thread.
Due to not buying many figures lately, I've got a little spare money, and I need a fix. This is my short-list:

MP-13 Soundwave (Yes, I'm the only TF collector on the planet that doesn't already own one... Plus, expensive. And it turns into a box. $140 and its a box. An expensive box.)
MP-18 Streak (Quite nice but TBH I am over robots that turn into cars)
PlanetX Caelus (luuurve Swoop)
Fansproject Quadruple U (Such a cool looking figure)
Fansproject SmartRobin (Nice, but that face )
MP-12 Lambor (Sideswipe was my first ever TF)
MP-20 Wheeljack (see Number 2...)

Over the past two weeks, I've only managed to take ManiaKing off the list.

Thoughts/opinions?

My first question is
Do you have any of the MP cars? if not any one of the MP datsuns is very nice, some chance that we may see them here at a better price.
Lambor is very nice, not incredible but very nice and if you do have an attraction to the character I'd recommend that.

I have Smartrobin and it has a very cool transformation, I can't speak for QuadU

Soundwave is very nice I have the Hasbro Version. He does just turn into a box, but on the bright side, it's not a car :D. I really like him but I think I got a little overhyped for him too. the tapes are a very nice inclusion.

Wheeljack doesn't come out for at least a few months so if you want something now, he's not really available.

I too lurve swoop he was my only G1 dinobot, Caelus I need to see in hand before I start dropping that sort of cash.

they're my thoughts on your list. The MP cars while just cars are very good transformers.

I really wish either Hasbro or TakTOM would venture with giving us some new TF alt modes that haven't been done before. :/ We all have loads of cars and planes etc., but how about more taxis or a bus or a chicken? C'mooon!!

If you can get reasonably priced Hasbro MP Soundwave, go with that.Great value considering you get all the cassettes. Laserbeak/Bauzzsaw, while simple, is an engineering marvel.

Define "...reasonably priced"

My first question is

...snip

Nope. No MP cars. I will admit that I love the look of both MP Sideswipe and Streak, I am just totally out of love with the concept of transforming cars at the moment. Maybe this will pass...

I appreciate all the suggestions/comments thus far. As a result I am taking the following off the short list:

Caelus
SmartRobin
Wheeljack

Hey, its progress.

or a chicken? C'mooon!!

That would be great.:D:p

I think the reason I love my GariGari x Transformers toy so much is cause it's an unusual alt mode.

I do really like the alt modes that are "everyday" probably part of the reason Skids has always been a favorite. I love the Movie Twins Icecream truck alt mode, the toy was a bit mediocre but fairly well executed given size constraints. If they are going to do animals seriously at any point they really need to do a starupper, I'm sure that would make a certain paulbot happy:)

Quick and final update for those playing along at home.
Last night I looked at reviews for all the candidates and this morning I woke up and knew it had to be MP Streak.
So he is ordered and inbound. Plus I threw a Dr Wu Warhead set into my PoL.

MP Soundwave came a close second, but for the price different, I can get an MP18, plus something else later on.

So, I'll have enough money next week to get Swerve and Cosmos from BBTS (little more than $48 shipped). Question is, I'm really hyped by the Masterpiece Bumblebee, which I can get for $53 shipped when it comes out. So, do you think I should wait out the final week and get the Generations Legends, or order the Bumblebee. BB doesn't come out for a while though, so I may be able to get him later on. I'm really excited for both. I'm also considering waiting the extra week and getting Whirl instead, but I'm really conflicted on it.

(I get paid $10 a week for small jobs, if it helps)

If you might be able to get him later then you might also be able to get something else shipped with him later, which will save you a bit on postage fees and maybe give you a chance to get some of those upcoming larger Generations figures when they come out.

All four of those seem like pretty good figures. If I was going to pass on any though, it would probably Swerve and Cosmos. (I'm not really basing that on anything other personal opinion).
Pre-order MP BB, then chuck the others ones in your PoL as you acquire the funds.

Thanks for the comments guys :) Metroplex sounds like he has more pros than cons.
I'm now really leaning towards getting him but at a cheaper price. I'll wait for a sale at Target or if Myers decide to ever price more appropriately.

Last week my formerly MOSC Car Robot Ox's bubble came half unstuck from the card. The upper half is still attached but the lower half has become detached. The gun actually fell out of the blister and I can even pull the tech specs card out! It's not wide enough to remove the toy though. :p I'm concerned about losing the gun, so I'm wondering if I should get some glue and try to reseal this figure, or just open the damn thing.

I already have a loose RiD Ironhide, which is basically the same toy except:
+ It has an Autobot logo tampographed on the bonnet, which Ox doesn't
+ It has a red tray, which is white on Ox
+ As with all RiD Spychangers, Ironhide does not have the heat sensitive paint which reveals the faction logo which all Car Robot Spychangers have. I must admit that this is a pretty damn cool gimmick, and I don't have any other Car Robot Spychangers (the rest of mine are RiD)... and opening this toy would finally give me the chance to play with this gimmick.

So really... it's the heat-sensitive paint gimmick that's the main draw card for opening this toy. Otherwise it's pretty much the same toy as RiD Ironhide. But then, really, this toy isn't sealed anymore either, and gluing it back on the card feels like cheating in a way.

So I'm trying to work out if to keep my boxes or not.

Largely I've only kept whole boxes for larger/more significant lines. The issue with this is that my line on what is a significant item has broadened, particularly with special editions, like YOTS Omega Supreme.

Alts, Masterpiece, and 3rd Party I will keep.

What should I do with my Commemerative/Spec Ed boxes - ie:

Movie 25th Anniversary Unicron
Anniversary Predaking
YOTS Omega Supreme
Reissue Piranhacon

I tend to only keep unfolded packaging for items that I think need special care for transport, ie MP's, some 3rd Party, or where the box is just too pretty.
I hoik out most of the plastic boxes, all bubbles (unles I use them for packing).
I totally get what you're saying, there have been more and more "exclusive" toys lately with pretty packaging, making my standard box shedding rules inadequate.

I've got the original '07 movieverse voyager Ratchet, which I'm now thinking of selling off/'trading in'. Is it worth downsizing to the DotM deluxe, or would it be better to wait for an AoE version?

I recently just bought a G1 Sandstorm in beautiful condition. The figure came with the original unsused sticker sheet, and I'm debating whether to put them on or not.

On the one hand, Sandstorm looks a little bare without stickers. On the other hand, I don't feel right about using stickers that have been saved in pristine condition on the original sheet for the better part of 30 years. The previous owners have been able to preserve the sticker sheet, and I respect that.
Not to mention I worry about the holding power of the glue.
Third option is to use a set of repro labels I suppose.

Thoughts and opinions? :)

Thanks. I like the look of that one in robot mode, but for some reason, the fact that it's a 'normal' Hummer with Ratchet's roof rack instead of being the custom Hummer with the modified rear kind of bugs me, even if I'll be displaying it in robot mode most of the time.

I have the first movie voyager Ratchet but I think its horrible looking thing. I got a few deluxe Ratchets and I think the best looking one is the red DOTM Specialist Ratchet. I use this as a 'classics' Ratchet as it's better and cheaper than the older Universe one. I also have the ROTF and DOTM green deluxes.
Takara has a white AOE Ratchet deluxe also which looks great IMO.

It's because I buy what I see on-screen, so repaints don't interest me. That said, the RotF deluxe has a great-looking robot mode, and I like the fact that it has a screen-accurate weapon, so I'm kind of torn.

I just placed an order for the MP Guide book on Amazon Japan. The book itself costs 2800JPY ($30) with $13 for postage. I can't decide if I should keep this order, pay $13 for postage, and receive the book by Friday... or cancel this order, and combine it w/ my order for MP Wheeljack to save money on postage (by up to $10), but wait until late September (or early Oct) before receiving the toys and book. Hrmmm...

I'm currently leaning towards the latter. Thoughts?

When i ordered the MP Guide, i also got 2 other books - both of which were in stock, while the MP Guide was still on preorder. In the checkout i chose "Group my items together", but the next day, the 2 in stock items shipped immediately and the MP guide shipped later when it released. They didn't charge any more shipping than what was quoted originally either so you could try your luck combining the orders and maybe they'll ship the book before the toy.

Usually when I get toys sent from Japan in bulk, the cost of postage per item works out pretty cheap -- as cheap as $3 per item. So is it worth potentially saving $10 and getting this book nearly 2 months later, or just pay the extra ten bucks and get it by the end of the week?

But anyway, someone else has expressed interest in this book and has agreed to buy it off me after I get it. So I'll get to read the interview first (and have a sneak preview of the rest of the book) before passing it onto the other guy. :) I'll also have a better idea after looking at it as to whether or not the rest of the book will entice me to want to get my own copy (try before I buy ;)).

I enough green to get one of the Generations Specialist 3 packs, being the Decepticons (Astrotrain, Galvatron and Octane) and Autobots (Hound, Mirage and Ironhide), as they're on sale at BBTS. I'm having trouble deciding.

Reasons for both:

Decepticons:
-Some major Decepticon players I don't have
-Metallic paintjobs that work well
-Really big fan of Astrotrain and Galvatron
-Most of my POL and already existant Classics is overwhelmed by Autobots, Decepticon numbers are pretty low
-Finish Decepticon triple changers

Autobots:
-All three are major parts of '84 Autobot cast, would finish off most of my core Autobots
-Good metallic paintjobs for good moulds, better than Henkei versions
-I don't own the (vastly superior to Generations) Universe Ravage mould

I'm planning to add a set tonight as the last item in my POL for this year. (should ship in October, due to Arcee, Brainstorm, etc) I could probably afford one later on near Christmas, so maybe which set is better to get sooner rather than later would be widely appreciated.

Cheers. :)

Yep Decepticons - this version of Astrotrain is so incredibly cool.

They also look like the more expensive of the two sets on eBay at the moment - so if BBTS sells out of both of them, it will be easier for you to hunt for the other (this was a different story a few years ago, when Mirage was $40+ and Ironhide was selling at $80+).

So I'll be getting around $150 for my birthday which is next month and I've my eye on Metropelx for quite some time (I gots plenty 'o legends figures),
but then I discovered this Star Wars Republic Attack Shuttle (http://www.amazon.com/Star-Deluxe-Republic-Attack-Shuttle/dp/B004SGVFBU) and now I'm torn.

My main reason for getting Metroplex was so that I could have a cool playset/base mode for my little legends. I've always loved playsets that looked like an actual base or headquarters and the shuttle looks like it does that job much much better. Also I'm not too fussed with staying within a genre so it's fine that it isn't a TF.

Anyways, I think the shuttle is super awesome as it goes from a shuttle that can hold and (sort of) interact with my legends figures to a wicked base with heaps of playability.

But on the other hand... METROPLEX!!!.. I love his base mode and the robot mode is killer. Just the 'transport' mode I feel really is sub par and looks like he is sitting down.

Which do you think I would go for? What do the Metroplex owners think about their figure?

Question 1 how much space do you have?
Metroplex is MASSIVE. if you are limited for space he might just not be practical.
I have my Metroplex on display on a shelf in robot mode as the other modes just don't fit anywhere in our apartment.

I question if the shuttle geometry will suit the size/shape of transformers legends, the platforms and ramps that suit the star wars figures might be too narrow for the little transformers. This is a guess from the pictures and video in your link. while the shuttle is smaller overall, it doesn't really have a mode that doesn't take up a lot of real estate, at least with Metroplex his robot mode has a comparatively small footprint even it is 2 feet tall at the same time.

the transport mode of Metroplex is good for displaying legions in vehicle modes, especially the aircraft. you can fit a lot on there.

Personally as much as I really like star wars, it's not transformers and therefore my advice is Metroplex, but the above needs to be considered. I have Fortress Maximus as well, I got it out of the box, changed its modes a couple times and then put it back in the box in the cupboard because there was no-where to display it without it getting in the way. this might be the biggest issue with city formers. Of course if they came out with a Titan Trypticon I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Space is no issue. Metroplex will definitely be the centre of my display but in our new flat I've dedicated one whole wall of my office to TFs so he'll be fine.

See your point about geometry and sizes of the shuttle -it could look pretty now but I think down the road or could have a higher chance of being annoying to play with.

I found some pictures of deluxe figures with Metroplex and even they don't look out of place.

the only thing the shuttle is doing well for me is the whole "cool space ship that drops in from orbit and turns into a command centre" it feels very "Axalon" from beast wars.
In every other aspect Metroplex wins.

Also that pic of Metroplex sitting on a Frakking shelf and counselling Prime is awesome.

My subscription to the TFCC is almost due for renewel, I received an email today saying that it will automatically renew in 15 days.

I have to decide if it's worth it this year, at the moment I'm leaning towards probably not.
I don't care a rats about the free figure (http://www.transformersclub.com/lioconvoy15.cfm).
The membership purchase figures are interesting, Nova prime (http://www.transformersclub.com/_images/2015/novaprimeBOTweb.jpg) and Marissa Fairborne (http://www.transformersclub.com/_images/2015/Marissa-figure.jpg). though Nova should have been a bigger mold than a small deluxe.

Unless something changes drastically it's super unlikely that I'll be going to Botcon so there's no saving or advantage to being a member for that.

I might be interested in the Subscription service 4, if it happens, I very nearly didn't go in for Subscription service 3 and still wonder if I should have. I will need to be a member to purchase SS4 if I decide I like it.

I don't mind the club magazine, I do wish it had a bit more substance and for $82 US it's probably not worth my trouble but if I do re-join so I can order SS4 then i'll be half way through the yearly comic and be trying to get hold of the issues I would have missed out on.

$82 US is over $100 AU at the moment, making for a very expensive 4 magazines if I get it and nothing else. that's almost 4 combiner limbs...

hmmmmmm doesn't really add up does it:(

Trying to decide whether to go the Takara version or the Hasbro version of the new Generations Leader Class Megatron. They cost pretty much the same unless you go the G1/Armada 2 pack from BBTS which lowers the cost to $45US per figure.

Any suggestions to which is the better? I cant tell from the pics.

Which set of generations stunticons to get, the Hasbro (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/attach/4/0/5/9/7/MENASOR-combined_1406238513.jpg)set or the Takara (http://i.tformers.com/g/generated/26248/uw-menasor-solicit__scaled_600.jpg)set?

they have clearly remoulded/painted deadend to create a wildrider. And it looks to me like Motor master is a much darker grey, and his silver highlights stand out a lot more, especially on the front of the truck cab and he has some purple paint apps that show up in combined mode on the legs that the Hasbro version doesn't have.

I like the contrast but it's also, less G1ish (http://www.transformerland.com/image/reference_images/1553.jpg), at least as far as the toys (https://tilallaremine.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/stunticons-g1-robots.jpg)go.

I am trying to decide if I want to order them on Anime Export before their pre-orders close, but I wonder if I care enough about the differences to justify waiting till August, or paying the extra against the mid year sale prices that I'm pretty confidant the Hasbro release will be here in time for.

penny for peoples thoughts?

Hasbro's is more toy-accurate and TakaraTOMY's is more show-like. So I guess if you're more keen on having show-like colours, and you're patient enough, then perhaps consider pre-ordering the TakaraTOMY versions. Otherwise I think that the Hasbro versions are fine.

Bidoofdude
8th April 2015, 07:10 PM
If you're keen on Wildrider and definitely not Offroad, then perhaps Takara. You get all of the G1 guys in there and don't have to go through the possible hassle of tracking down a Hasbro Break-neck when he comes out. If you're not as fussed, either way is fine.

I've caved and Pre-ordered at Anime Export, I should be able to ship it with Tracks later in the year.

I decided that I like the darker colouring of motormaster, it makes the combined form look less washed out.

Then I saw this (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/japanese-transformers-40/takara-tomy-unite-warriors-menasor-new-official-images-182454/)at TFW.
I think WildRider looks good, his chest is very similar to dead end with just different colours.
As Paulbot pointed out on Twitter, Drag strip is a little bland but looks more like the original toy and show model. The link above shows some black colouring on his fuselage that represents the second pair of wheels.

The combination of the dark blue and the extra yellow highlights for the most part. I had the same issue with MP Ultra Magnus, I want a more toy like light blue rather than the cartoon one. The colouring on Ambus/Alpha Trion is another case for the Hasbro one.

The yellow highlights are surprisingly more IDW Comic accurate, as for the blue - could just be the exposure of the photo, will be hard to tell until there's a comparison shot between the two.... I currently have the Hasbro version, but will be double dipping on the Takara too.

I'd go online but only if the price is similar.

We'd expect it to be $50 on the shelf so if you find it for anywhere up to $60 posted online, you're probably paying about the same.

And while I don't normally suggest them, you could try this:

Even as a die-hard anti-online shopping local-retail supporter, I would say... buy it online. The distribution of Transformers in Australia has become so unpredictable in Australia, that if you really want a toy, I'd say get it online rather than taking the gamble to see whether or not it will come out locally. Sure, these toys might come out locally and you might find one in your area, and it might work out cheaper (esp. if there's a sale)... but there're just too many 'mights' and given the track record of distribution in this country, I wouldn't risk it. :(

The CW Stunticons have been released here, and I've found Motormaster and the Deluxes (though sporadically), but I've never been able to find Blackjack.

Sounds like the same reasons I got it. I don't have any particular connection to the character, but black & red goes so well together for 'Cons. I was also looking for another excuse to expand on my Classicsverse collection with a fairly fun mould that hasn't been been repurposed into another character until this release.

It's not insanely cheap, he has 10 to sell so maybe bought them at a good price as a lot or has been trying to scalp them individually and now that the new Rodimus news is out he's trying to move them on before they become a serious liability. Ugh, at pains on whether to get 2 items (being tempted with the ebay 15% sale):

YOTH Optimus - Ive only been collecting the main MP releases numerically (subbing in Hasbro versions where necessary) and only getting repaints/redecos that are unique characters (yes to Clampdown, no to G2 Sideswipe). But for some reason I'm tempted...

Secondly, I'm collecting all the Soundwave/Blaster Cassettes, including redecos of the same character (eg I got YOTG Soundwave), but not multiples of the same toy (eg I got encore tapes instead of orig G1).
But I don't know whether I want the Linkin Park release! Given it's effectivey 3 unique tapes, I'm at odds, but then I cant say I own them all (minus the 4 jap dino cassettes of course)

Any objective opinions out there?

I'm a fan of the YOTH Prime colours. If the 15% off brings it down to a good price shipped then it is recommended though there is a chance a board member could also be in the market to offload theirs. I'm also in the same boat about repaints and redecos and would usually need more than just a slight paint job or new head. The YOTH Prime though just seems like a different character with that paint job. If they ever make an Xzibit Pimp my Ride fig, I'm so buying that to display between my Hasbro MP10 and YOTH MP10.

Pre-order MP Hot Rod. Assuming that MP Grimlock's inflated price will not increase too much in the next half year or so, you're better off getting Hot Rod while he's cheap, rather than risk falling into a situation where you hunt & buy MP Grimlock at scalper's prices and then find that MP Hot Rod is sold out & have to resort to scalper's prices as well.

Eh... I don't see the obsession with minor accessories like Starscream's coronation gear. He only ever wore it once, and it was during his incredibly short stint as Decepticon leader before being vapourised by Galvatron. Accessories like MP Grimlock's crown, MP Sideswipe's piledrivers, MP Bumblebee's jetpack and MP Optimus Prime's Matrix are more important to me as they were used in more than one scene. They weren't just One Shot Wonders. :o And there are better One Shot Wonders than the coronation kit, like Optimus Prime's axe and Megatron's flail. Sure, it was only ever used once, but it was an epic fight! Yeah sure, it's a nice accessory to have if you can get it, but given it's obscurity, it's hardly a deal breaker for me.

Yeah even with the crappy exchange rate Trypticon is the cheapest at Amazon at about $230 AUD before shipping. If I saw a decent review from a reviewer I trust I'd be willing to take a chance on him at that price given he is not a typical Transformer design.

That's still a lot of money, especially after factoring in the cost of shipping. IMO if you're going to be throwing that much money at a toy, then you want to be damn sure that you absolutely want it. I just think that it's a lot of be spending just to experience buyer's regret later on, especially given your previous comments reflecting your uncertainty about even wanting this toy.

*Sigh* He still says 'rotate' for every step of transformation.

This is why I strongly recommend just seeing the toy for yourself. There's really only so much even a video review can tell you about a toy. Here's dirge's review (http://www.cliffbee.com/reviews/trypticon.php), which is quite comprehensive. :)

Is G1 Trypticon worth getting? I'm really curious about him, but I'm not normally collecting G1 any more so I'm conflicted as to if I should buy him when I get paid next week. I normally restrict myself to CHUG and MP.

I'd say no. I bought the Platinum edition and while kinda cool, all it did was remind me why I don't bother with G1 anymore. I have since collected a whole heap of legends class figures (thanks Sinnertwin :)) and when my son is old enough, Trypticon and Generations Metroplex and the legends class toys will be his to have city wars!

Red armada overload for $30? Seems a bit steep but it's either him or Armada Cyclonus

Red Overload. He's just a brick, but he looks imposingly fantastic even without Prime to combine with - just like Energon Wing Saber. $30 doesn't sound steep since he's a whole class size up from Armada Cyclonus.

Waiting is a good idea, if not for a better exchange rate, then perhaps for news of whether Hasbro ends up releasing him as a Titan-class next year. Unless you're really set on the G1 version I wouldn't dive in at a high price.

I quite like Armada Overload despite his brickiness (which is a common problem that a lot of non-Mini-Con Armada TFs suffer from). The sculpting on that toy is amazing and the Mini-Con Headmaster gimmick is brilliant. :D And I totally agree that it's a great toy on its own merit. I actually keep mine uncombined with Optimus Prime because I just enjoy Overload more on his own (even though combining would save precious shelf space... there may come a day... :p). $30 is a great price for that toy IMO. :)

I'm unsure if I want an MP Tracks. He looks nice, but I don't have any particularly strong fondness for the character, but I have a sort of 'fear of missing out' of getting one at a reasonable price.

I bought MP Sideswipe and Bluestreak when they were starting to get pricey on eBay, and I was lucky to get my 'new' MP Grimlock at a reasonable price.

Its affordable at $85 delivered. I had doubts about shipping cost but getting one now is definitely no regrets. Look at Bumble bee, you cannot even get him at $90 now. when I bought him like $60 delivered. I say go for it.

So my 8 year old son has asked for MP Starscream for Christmas.

As an Optimus collector I haven't taken much interest in the whiney jet figures so is he worth it?
My son got MP Grimlock last Christmas (our deal with him is he can ask Santa for another MP because he has taken very good care of his Grimlock).

The other dilemma I have is Santa already has CW Starscream put away. Are MP and CW Starscream different enough my son would get value out of them both?

He also wants MP Ultra Magnus so I'm undecided whether to give him the big guy, the whiney jet x 2 or all 3. Opinions and recommendations?

I wish! I live in Hong Kong - exchange and refund does not exist here. (Believe me I miss having that luxury)
Toys R Us are reluctant to exchange even when you have receipts;it's like getting blood out of a stone - actually getting blood out of a stone is easier. Unfortunately however to get the best deal (HK$199 for CW S/S) Santa shopped in Mong Kok so definitely no chance of exchanging him out. :/

I think this settles the issue.

I have the Leader Jetfire that the Starscream is a remould of. it's not particularly complex. it is fairly poseable. it is not a masterpiece toy.

The Masterpiece Starscream MP11 Mould is more poseable than the original MP-03 mould due to the added heel spurs and relocation of the fuselage sides to be part of the legs instead of hanging off the hips of the robot mode. It is an excellent representation of G1 Starscream in robot mode. it is a complex transformation, not having transformed MP Grimlock I can't compare.
I prefer the older MP Starscream vehicle mode, it's a cleaner, more realistic jet.

MP Magnus is very nice, an involved transformation but not overly complex it has fair articulation, partially limited by it's blocky geometry. Both modes are great representations of the G1 character and the cab is literally identical in appearance to the MP-10 Cab.

At least your son still wants Transformers. Mine was all into them so I have got a large inventory of Combiner Wars Sets, G1 Trypticon and a couple Masterpieces set aside for Christmas presents. But now he's going nuts for Star Wars toys! Reminder to self, do not order toys too far away from Christmas because childrens interests change.

Ok enough of the rant. If in your position I could not justify giving multiples of the same character. So I would try selling the CW version and get him the masterpiece he wants.

Trying to figure out whether to get UW Defensor or not.

No matter where I get him from it seems that he will be over $200AU before shipping which is a helluva lot  It's the reason I cancelled my preorder with BBTS. I dont mind paying that for Devastator who is made up of 6 Voyagers but this is 5 characters and 4 of them only deluxe sized.

On the other hand, I've got the CW and UW versions of Superion, Devastator and Menasor (so I can have the individual bots displayed as well as the combined modes) so it would seem odd for Defensor to be left out.

Any advice?

I rarely collect more than one version of the same toy. When it comes to Hasbro vs. TakaraTOMY, I just pick/choose which one I want. I don't see the need to go totally Hasbro or totally TakaraTOMY. I recommend just choosing which version you prefer on a case by case basis and go with that. :) There are times when the Hasbro version is actually better than the Takara one (e.g. MP3 Starscream, RtS/United Perceptor etc.).

I'm starting to take a keen interest in 3rd party TF's. So far i've only stuck to Masterpieces and some CW Combiners because im a "purist" and it's the G1 toys that i'm attached to. The other reason is im trying to keep the spending under control because for me they're ultimately plastic toys.

But after seeing Fanstoys Dinobots lined up behind MP Optimus something snapped. They just look too good, i had to get them all.

The other holygrail for me is to own a combiner. I was never lucky enough as a kid to have one. CW is great but they're kinda simple. Devy is on the way but i think i'll have to look to 3rd party's for the more exotic combiners.

Anyways i noticed BBTS has Quantron for approx 500aud delivered. Is it worth it? Should I spoil myself? As with almost all 3P combiners he certainly looks awesome.

$500AUD is a fair price for Quantron at the moment if that includes shipping. I paid a similar price when it first came up and the dollar was a lot better (roughly $470AUD shipped). I get the feeling that BBTS and other online stores may keep it at this price for some time as nobody in their right mind would pay $430USD for it now.

I think if you're looking for a third party Devy, you can't go past Green Giant. It's on par with Quantron, and the choice between the two is personal preference.

I have TT Devy on the way. As with my CW combiners, i bought the PE upgrades and I'm planning on getting the DNA DK-01 upgrade for Devy. Its hard to say no to the upgrades because they can improve the look and articulation dramatically. Case in point PE menasor upgrade (But perhaps articulation is a downgrade in this example).

I'm always concerned with 3P QC issues hence my reluctance with 3P combiners. But as far as can i see Quantron seems fairly solid. Except the two tiny plastic pieces in the knee.

For me i see the appeal of collecting all variants like MP red bumblebee, g2 etc
But whenever there's a TT variant of a Hasbro release i find in most cases the TT improves on the Hasbro. Hence no real reason to collect both especially if the newer version isn't based on some kind of series like G2, or toy deco version.

I'd rather put the money towards 3rd party products:D

Maketoys has been around for a while and has historically held great quality standards. I've bought quite a few 3P and this is how I would rank them:
1. Fansproject
2. Maketoys
3. Mastermind Creations
4. Perfect Effect

All 4 have very high standards of plastic quality - all better than the latest grades that Hasbro uses. The rankings for 2/3/4 are very close and a bit harder to differentiate - however I take into account proportions and designs which affect a toy's overall balance. For MMC, Feral Rex and Hexatron were very G1-like and slightly clunky (not a problem if that's what you like), as well as some very tough joints to move around; whilst for PE, I'm referring to the transformation for Warden, which was a bit finicky for me.

The only issue with Quantron I've read about is from fellow Ozformer, liegeprime, who had a factory construction issue (not related to quality/mould quality). I think he was given two left parts for a part of Sonic Drill's leg joint.

I tend to buy whichever I think is the nicer version, or if I don't think the difference is significant, I go for the cheaper option. I've never had a budget big enough to get one from each company so it's never been a question I've had to consider directly.
I would hesitate to get rid of one line over another just because of the point of origin.

Thanks im going to be adding Quantron to my to buy list. I'm more worried about the structural design. In my research i see a lot of pictures of small tabs breaking on the toy where connecting pieces go, essentially ruining it.

I think these 3rd parties cater for adult collectors while Hasbro/TT probably design their toys with a younger audience in mind hence durability is more of a concern for them.

Good to know they use good quality plastics though.

I read Quantron was $250 USD during black friday sales. That seems like a bargain now. I may wait until another big sale.

I saw that too. BBTS has it for for around $300+50 postage so BBTS actually works out cheaper. Chimungmung over charges for postage IMO.

He seems to be on sale at a number of other places too, i wonder why.

For most people, probably price. Maketoys may have noticed this and chosen to have gone with separate parts for Guardia. It also gives them time to hammer out slight mould imperfections on the team members with trickier parts/transformations. The production process would also be less rushed.

Come to think of it, most other third party combiners are released separately.

Ah ok, I assumed chimungmung postage would be cheaper as it's closer isn't it? Whenever I've randomly added things to a cart on BBTS the postage seemed really expensive compared to my chimungmung orders.

Perhaps Smint's got quite a few items in his loot? BBTS is usually only cheaper for me after 5-7 items (I don't usually ship until its roughly $12 shipping per item).

BBTS shipping calculator quoted me $54 with tracking. So that's $354 shipped.

Chimungmung is at least $35 for shipping. So that will be about $365 shipped.

$35 shipping is not bad for Quantron but for other smaller items he charges a similar amount. 1 Fanstoys dinobot is $38.

Tony will do combined shipping but it's still ridiculously expensive. 3x Perfect Effect CW upgrade kits came to $38USD postage after $8 combined shipping discount.

I'm working on a TF crossover custom (that is, turning TFs into characters from another franchise), and I'm not sure whether to put TF faction symbols on the finished products.

I'm completely unsure which way to go. Thoughts?

One is nearly complete, I'll put up a gallery the next few days, all going well.

Official TF Crossovers (Star Wars, Marvel, Animorphs) have never had TF faction logos. I guess if the idea is for the Transformers to be non-Cybertronians, then they wouldn't have Cybertronian faction logos. If on the other hand, you want to make something like Energon Snowcat; a Cybertronian who happens to transform into a vehicle from another franchise (in this case, a G.I. Joe Snowcat), then it would make sense for that toy to have faction logos because the robot is still actually a Cybertronian whose alt mode happens to be something from another franchise. Snowcat is a Decepticon whose alt mode is a GI Joe Snowcat, but Darth Vader/Death Star is the Death Star who happens to transform into a giant mecha that resembles Darth Vader's armour.

why not do something in between.... morph a tf faction logo with whatever franchise logo you're doing?

I agree with the others, perhaps even just the representative logo of the characters faction or franchise entirely. I never had any star wars transformers but I'm pretty sure they had empire and rebellion logos on them where appropriate.

GoktimusPrime

^This is true. e.g. Obi-Wan Kenobi/Jedi Starfighter toys only have Republic logos on it, no Autobot or other Cybertronian logos.

Having said that, the idea of a hybrid logo is pretty neat too. It all depends on the intention of the story behind the toy; are they intended to just be unliving piloted mecha (as Star Wars TFs are), or are they meant to be living Cybertronians who have disguised themselves in the universe of another franchise? (as GI Joe/TFs are in the comics)

When Star Wars TFs first came out, I wrote a series of fan bios which explained that they were a group of Autobots and Decepticons who accidentally ended up in the Star Wars universe and disguised themselves as vehicles to blend in. The Autobots initially sided with the Republic and the Decepticons with the CIS and other neutrals (e.g. Mandalorians etc.). After Order 66, the Autobots realised that they'd been deceived (along with the Jedi) and survivors went and joined the Rebel Alliance. The sole exception was Strike Wing (Anakin Skywalker/Jedi Starfighter). Both Strike Wing and Guard Wing (Obi-Wan Kenobi/Jedi Starfighter) were critically wounded after the destruction of the Invisible Hand (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Invisible_Hand). Both were placed in CR chambers. When Anakin became Darth Vader (but before the battle of Mustafar), he had Strike Wing rebuilt as Cry Convoy* (Darth Vader/Jedi Starfighter). After the Battle of Mustafar when Vader was rebuilt as a cyborg, Strike Wing was also rebuilt with his TIE Advanced alt mode. Guard Wing was later restored by Jedi sympathisers and told to flee Coruscant as Cry Convoy was helping the Empire to hunt down surviving Autobots. He later came to serve the Rebel Alliance and was rebuilt with an X-Wing alt mode (Luke Skywalker/X-Wing). Hey, I never said that my fanfics were any good. :p

Sorry to disappoint, but I ran out of time this weekend to do the finishing touches and do a photo shoot. Hopefully the next few days!

It's a strange one. I had the idea for the custom almost immediately (you'll see why when it's revealed), but doing a Google search I couldn't find any trace of anyone doing the same thing before. Surely - SURELY - I can't be the first person to think of this idea and bring it to fruition. I'd be surprised if I am.

Hi Everyone,
I have some MISB Starscreams, see below. I'm trying to figure out which one to add to my collection and which ones to move on, I can't really justify having all 3.

I already have the original MP-03 'greenscream' which I really like but I want a white Starscream on my shelf.
I have the MP-06 and MP-07 Thundercracker and Skywarp, I also have the Takara Sunstorm and the Hasbro Acid Strom so I am familiar with the differences in the two versions of the mould. I like to shift figures around and display them in both modes over time as well. As such I like the original version for it's vehicle mode and the newer version for it's robot mode.

What I want to know is if there are any significant standout issues or positives with either of the releases in the picture, plastic quality, tolerance/looseness issues or anything else that peoples have come across? Why would you keep one over the other two?

US first release (MP-3 type) if it's the Japanese "USA Edition" (better rear wing tips IIRC) or you really want your Takara seekers to match it.

Japanese MP-11 if you want the better robot mode and accessories.

Hasbro MP-11 if you want poor QC, less deco.

For me, MP-11, but I can understand the appeal of the US first version in the window box.

Hmmm, so of the 3 you'd say the Hasbro version of MP-11 has the worst QC?
I got the impression that apart from the blue nosecone, the Hasbro and Takara versions of the MP-11 mould had nearly identical colours?

I am left with a minor dilemma: do I use CHUG deluxe Hot Rod or the new TR deluxe Hot Rod? Leaning slightly towards the latter but ideally I would prefer he wasn't a headmaster.

CHUG Deluxe Rodimus. This is precisely why I skipped TR Hot Rod. At best, TR Hot Rod would represent Targetmaster Hot Rod who appeared in Season Four (and in the main-universe G1 comics; as the events of TFTM happened in an aborted future timeline and parallel universe). But I feel that they've gone overboard w/ the HM gimmick in TR. The problem with simply saying "Just don't take the head off" is that you have to take it off during transformation. And the head invariably looks different. I don't think that _every_ toy in TR has to be a Titan Master, just as not every toy in CW was a gestalt. JMHO.

I disagree. CHUG Hot Rod is such a dated design that it looks like a brick with limbs compared to the TR version.
Comparing both modes? The TR is so unashamedly G1, just like the majority of the TR line, that it really isn't even a contest in my mind.

As for removing the head, no biggie. It's literally 1 extra step. Pop & we're done & it's not like they look like Bobbleheads or those gumby PoP! figures with their heads either.

Yeah, but then I'd have to make up a backstory as to why Hot Rod and Firebolt (or wateva his name is now) became Headmasters. I had to make up my own backstory for why Scourge and Fracas are now Headmasters when they were previously Targetmasters. Scourge and the Sweeps have formed their own faction. #splitters Interestingly enough, the backstory I made for Infinitus/Sentinel Prime has worked out to be essentially the same as what IDW have gone with - i.e. Infinitus is the actual sentient robot and "Sentinel" is a non-sentient 'transtector' which he uses as beguile others into believing that he's a Prime. Although in the Gokiverse Sentinel Prime isn't the evil son of a glitch that he is in the IDWverse. ;)

I haven't had a chance to play with Doublecross yet (only fiddle, but not proper story-play), but I'm gonna have to make up a story as to how the hell he become binary bonded to White Leo. As luck would have it, White Leo is the only Battle Beast that I own! :o So I'm planning on playing w/ my G1 Doublecross and White Leo to make up a back story as to how they became Twinferno and Daburu (no idea how I'll do this - half the fun of playing with toys is literally making this crap up as I go along :D). I also had to make up a story for Galvatron and Nucleon (Megatron was killed but his spark was locked into a small load-bearing protoform in order to save Megs. The Galvatron Transtector was then constructed and Megatron was born anew as Galvatron, although his true identity is kept secret; most folks believe that Galvatron is a whole new Decepticon who has come to lead the Decepticons). And again, I'm gonna have to think of a story for Breakaway and Throttle... (haven't had a proper play w/ this toy yet).

Anyway, I'm perfectly content w/ my Classics Rodimus. Don't personally feel the need to replace it. :o I wouldn't mind a Classicsverse Rodimus Prime though (i.e. the space Winnebago) - other than the 15cm Ti Series figure (which I already have). ;)

Over the last year I have been slowly acting on a plan.
MP36 was announced allowing me to replace my CW Leader Megatron. Then I found a cheap Leader Starscream. Then the TR Soundwave I had on order for a nephew's gift wasn't going to arrive before Christmas so after scrambling for a replacement I had a Soundwave coming my way.

Suddenly I could provide the kids with the big 3 Cons in a very G1 form. Bwah bwah bwah. Children need to be educated in the classics ;)

Of course then PC exploded and I have been scrambling all year to put the egg back together. That is not the decision.

Big bad guys need big good guys so over the course of the year I picked up the leader TR Optimus as reasonably G1 and the right size. But now PotP has a big Prime that is even more G1 inspired.

So the question is. Should I get PotP Optimus and should I keep both?

I've just received a handshake from work as recognition of my 5 years service. It's nice that they have recognised me like this and I want to use the cash to buy something that I will enjoy for some time.

I am very seriously considering buying a Nintendo 2DS XL and Samus returns, I love the Metroid franchise an it's based off my favourite hand held game of all time, Metroid 2. However, I rarely get time to scratch my arse these days and if I have time to play a Gameboy, I should be catching up on the massive stack of comics that I'm behind on. which I greatly enjoy. The other problem is, I may start playing and find that I'm not quite into hand held games like I once was and there goes a bunch of money. Or I don't end up having the time to play it and it sits there gathering dust.

the other thought I've had is putting the money towards the Titan Predaking that's coming out, it's an epic looking figure and will go nicely with my Titan Devastator et. al. however, given my current space constraints, I probably can't display it side by side, unless we move, that will potentially be months or years down the road, so in the mean time, one of them, or both will spend a lot of time in storage not being enjoyed.

Any thoughts, any other suggestions? Should I wait till they release a Mega Action Series Jazz, or maybe an MP Jazz and put the money towards something like that.

Both options have major drawbacks. I'd suggest a left field idea & splurge it on the missus & you. Offload the kiddies for the day & have quality time with her. Doesn't hurt to build up those browny points too.

Trent
25th April 2018, 07:55 AM
As someone in a similar (but with only 1 kid) position to you, we share a lot of the same issues like that. My outlet used to be my PS4. Then last year I saved up and bought a Nintendo Switch, which I love. But time to play it is definitely not easy to come by. As such I have had Zelda since about November and still haven’t finished it yet and it is the only game I am playing! An unintended consequence of me getting the Switch is that my PS4 now only gets used to play blurays when my sons wants to watch Wall-E or something like that. I only have time for one gaming system and I find that the Switch is the pick mainly because I can play it laying in bed.

Also, the only free time I get is generally after 8:30pm at night. So then I have to decide how best to spend that time. The options consist of Netflix, Nintendo, comics, novels, transformers, time with the wife or maybe, just maybe, sleep. With time with wifey and sleep being essential, the others are highly neglected.

So I guess my point is that If you don’t have enough time to indulge your hobbies/relax now, adding a 2DS is going make it harder to get around to those other things you never get to, or it itself is going to become one of those things you never get to.

Even a post this long from me is a rarity these days. It’s only because I get to have a bit of a “sleep in” because I was up with our son a fair bit last night. But it turns out I can’t sleep so I’m on here instead

@Galvatran, that has been happening for more than 5 years. .. . And Mrs UM won't let me splurge it on us like that, she feels that things like this should be a personal purchase. Which I kind of agree with. About a year and a half ago I got a cash recognition for a job well done on a project and put it towards a Botcon G2 Redux box set.

The hardest part of your suggestion though is offloading the kids. All our families are out of town so it would involve a pair of baby sitters. We make sure when we're visiting family interstate that we take a night out alone together if possible.

@Thurmus, you make a good pint, but, an MP Jazz might be years down the road, and I'll definitely be pre-ordering it the day it becomes available, I don't know if I can handle the burn in my pocket for that long.

@Trent, you have pretty much described my situation to a T, with the exception that most nights after the kids are in bed we watch something on the telly together as our chill down, I often try to open a transformer as well, though that precludes cuddles somewhat. ..

It looks like Mega Action Jazz and Titan Predaking look like safe bets if you're talking about something you'll enjoy when compared to a gaming device that could leave you saying "What the hell did I just spend my money on?!"

Looking at doing a custom team of POTP Dinobots in G2 colours. There are pics of G2 concepts for Sludge and Swoop that we’re never realised as toys, as well as an amazingly garish teal and yellow Grimlock. If I only do one Grimlock, should I do him in the traditional G2 blue, which fits with Slag and Snarl and looks crazy cool, or so I go for the bizarre teal and yellow, which fits more with Sludge and Swoop and looks just plain crazy?

G2 Grinlock should be blue. What about using the teal and yellow scheme on Slash?

You know when you hear an idea so absolutely perfect and so obvious in retrospect you curse yourself for not thinking of it yourself? That’s this right here. Thank you!!!:D

I tend to agree with this sentiment

The other thing that I like about the idea of Slash with G2 Grimlock's prototype colours is that it's also a sort of reversal of AOE Slash's colours. Yellow with teal highlights vs teal with yellow highlights. :)

That is hands down one of the greatest custom TFs in history.

So I have two Sweeps heads from the LG line. I'm torn on if I should grab two more LG Scourge's to use the heads, and you know, army build, or not.

get one of Hasbro and one of takara, then you can have two different looking sweeps.

I already have two Hasbro Scourges I use as Sweeps, these would be Sweep 3 and 4.:p

Worth undertaking the impossible in tracking down Botcon rainmakers, or waiting for a chance they'll be made in War for Cybertron as tetrajet repaints?

Depends on whether you want the actual Rainmakers or cool variants of the Classics Seeker mould.

Botcon's Sunstorm, Bitstream and Hotlink are apparently not the same green, purple and yellow Rainmaker characters you get to see for 30 seconds in "Divide and Conquer". https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Rainmaker

They're actually supposed to be the generic background Seekers from episode 1 that you see for 2-3 seconds: https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Bitstream_(G1).

I have the Botcon Rainmakers. They are a pretty nice set for G1 CHUG collectors. I paid $150 for mine when they were brand new and I feel they were worth it, but I have no idea what they sell for now.

BTW: I hate that the set is called Rainmakers when they are actually S1 E1 characters and not from the episode where Acid Storm and his colleagues were seen.

Yes, the flamethrower goons are who I was referring to. Problem is all my seekers are classics mould so far. There are also the neon guys who have no official toys yet in that mould. Very interested in how many characters they squeeze out of the tetrajet mould, considering how slow it was with Classics Starscream. Exclusives too.

It’s pretty exciting, if we do end up with saucer Bumblebee and golf cart Wheeljack, to make a good diorama of sorts for MTMTE P1.

I don't think we'll ever see a mould exploited in the same way generations starscream was exploited ever again. Don't forget, many of the uses of that mould were club exclusives and the club isn't here to produce all those wacky exclusives any more. Not to mention the notoriety of the character and his team of 3 + 3. having a Hasbro version and a Takara version that was different for each of those characters makes an instant 12 variants. And with the brand generalisation this last year, the likelihood of future Takara product being different has diminished dramatically.

I agree it would be cool if the new mould received similar treatment, but UM is spot on. Classics Acid Storm shelf-warmed for a very long time, which seemed to wipe out any chance for the other Rainmakers to make it to a general release. If the one or all of the team has been given more attention in the comics I might have higher hopes, however they have yet to be officially named.

In any event, whatever definition of Rainmaker or extra background seeker you want, the only one we've even a sniff of seeing is Acid Storm.

He's the only one that gets official toys.

Lately I've been mulling over getting the dark brown version of RotF leader Jetfire that came with the Jetpower two-pack with Optimus, since its colour scheme is more screen accurate than the standard blue, but now that the Studio Series has been announced I'm not sure what to do regarding Jetfire at all

Depending on how it looks in actual photos, I may or may not sell off my old Jetfire, although I currently have something of a soft spot for the mould. Should I get the brown Jetfire anyway, or wait until the Studio Series version is closer to release and buy that instead?

If you've got a version of the mould already, it's probably worth waiting. I have one copy, the one in the two pack, that I'm yet to open. now I'm trying to decide if I should keep it or sell it.
