View Full Version : Displaying G1 Transformers

Just wondering what everyones thoughts are on displaying G1 Transformers?
I currently have my G1 Autobots displayed in alt mode & my Cons as robots (due to space). I feel that the Bots look better in alt mode & have my classics displayed in robot mode but just wondering what you all thought of that. Ironhide & Ratchet suck as robots & that is what mostly stops me going robot mode.

Nearly always bot mode. Only time they are in alt mode is if I transform them and don't have time to put them back to robot mode right then.
Except Unicron. Planet eating alt mode all the way!

Mostly robot mode. But if I have a spare or reissue or repaint of the same mould, then I display one in robot mode, the other in vehicle mode.
e.g.:
+ Sunstreaker, I have 2; one in robot mode, the other in vehicle
+ Hound, reissue in robot mode, original in vehicle mode
+ Optimus Prime, original in vehicle mode, reissues in robot mode
+ Tracks in robot mode, Road Rage in vehicle mode
+ Constructicons, originals in Devastator mode, reissues in robot modes, 1992 versions in vehicle modes
+ Omega Supreme in robot mode, GADEP in rocket base mode
+ Fortress Maximus in robot mode, Brave Maximus in city mode (and if I ever had Grand Maximus, he'd be in Starship mode -- currently my Fort Max Jr is in starship mode)
... etc etc.
Feel free to click on the link in my signature to see pics of how my collection is displayed :)

But overall I do prefer to display toys in robot mode first - reasons include:
1) As the poll says, I see them as TF characters first
2) Robots occupy far less shelf space than vehicles!! :D

But isn't the whole point of Transformers, Robots in Disguise? If their altmode is good, I keep em in that, but if robot is fantastic (normally is), then I'll keep it robot. I put my minicons in alt mode too and some beasts.

I've always been slightly bemused by people who collect only realistic Transformers , but display them solely in alt mode (usually car).
How long would it take them to notice, if I swapped out some of their Transformers for proper model cars of identical make and colour.

I believe they should be displayed in bot mode otherwise what's the point; you may as well be collecting model cars ;) I do agree with Goki though in that if you have doubles, display one in bot mode and the other in alt mode (if you have room).

Well, because I dont collect G1 apart from a couple. I would display them in alt mode cos most of the robots look like #$@!. They dont age well.

It all depends on the space you've got, I prefer to display them in Altmode at first but when space becomes limited it ends up in robot mode which I don't mind but mixing them up actually (if space permits) makes for a more dynamic display. Erm there should be a third option - mix altmode/ botmode.
I for one have space issues so it's all bot mode now

the newer series are all boxed and on the floor so I'm buying more shelves soon. :p:p

But isn't the whole point of Transformers, Robots in Disguise?
Yeah but it depends on whether or not you prefer looking at the character or looking at the disguise. If you had a Superman toy that could change into Clark Kent (http://cdn100.iofferphoto.com/img/item/147/360/113/superman-returns-clark-to-superman-31e3f.jpg), would you display it as Superman (Kal El, his true identity) or as Clark (the 'disguise' identity that he uses to hide himself and blend among humans)? But of course, one crucial difference between Clark Kent and a TF alt mode is that Clark Kent doesn't take up any more shelf space whereas alt modes usually do. For people with smaller sized collections this may not be an issue, but for collectors with larger collections shelf space can become a premium commodity! :D
Well, because I dont collect G1 apart from a couple. I would display them in alt mode cos most of the robots look like #$@!. They dont age well.
At the time most G1 toys were pretty damn good. e.g. when you got a toy like 1984 Prowl in the 1980s (or even the 1990 reissue), I didn't hear anyone complain about the toy's design. Far from it, we were madly in love with the way these toys were made. Sure, toys today are better because there have been advances in engineering, technology etc. -- but in the context of the day, most of them were really well crafted toys. It's not as if you or I would sit there with these toys and think, "Man these toys are totally gonna suck when I look back on it in the future!" :p
And in some ways, I think some G1 toys were better made and better value for money than current toys - given the respective contexts of their times. Compare say 1984 Optimus Prime with Dark of the Moon Ultimate Optimus Prime; both were the big expensive ticket items for their time. With Ultimate Optimus Prime you got an Optimus Prime cab/robot whose engineering I would describe as mediocre at best. A big trailer that doesn't hold anything, but unfolds into a Mega-Pretender Butterfly Wingaling Shell for said mediocre robot. Whee. Oh, and it also has that large, clunky and pretty superfluous electronic weapon... thing (which is an eyesore when attached to the underside of the trailer). 1984 Optimus Prime gave us a cab/robot that was exceptionally well designed for its time. The trailer unfolded into a mobile command/headquarters that was interactive with other Autobot cars (Diaclone Car Robots), and it had an articulated battle tower with missile launchers, and a Roller car that could shoot out of the trailer with a launcher! (oh, and the launcher could also shoot out other Autobots too). The battle tower also had an arm to repair Autobots, and Roller had a nozzle to refuel Autobots. Also, the battle tower could be deployed out of the trailer in vehicle mode to give Optimus Prime a vehicular battle mode. And the trailer also had a port for storing Optimus Prime's rifle. And of course, in vehicle mode the trailer could hold other Autobots and transport them -- come on, who didn't think this scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=uAUf9naiYmU#t=446s) was freaking awesome the first time they watched it? :D (now who wants to admit that they've repeatedly done that in their own toy play! :))
1984 Optimus Prime's trailer enhances the play pattern with the Optimus Prime toy and any other Autobot from that year (and most other Autobots that followed). Ultimate Optimus Prime's trailer only enhances the play pattern of Ultimate Optimus Prime... and that's it. Yes, the trailer can hold a crapload of 5mm post weapons, but that's really the accessories of other toys enhancing Ultimate OP, not UOP enhancing another toy. I think most G1 toys have aged well, but they have aged. There's no denying that the average current-day Transformer toy is superior to the average G1 toy... it's been that way since late G2 and especially Beast Wars when a lot of the great things about current day TF engineering really kicked in. But everything in context - a longbow would be a craphouse weapon in modern day combat, but it was a spectacular weapon for its time. :)

I display the Classicverse as robots & G1 as alt mode. I find it aesthetically pleasing that way.

I put each bot in whatever mode they look best. Some don't change from their modes while others won't stop being changed! But i do let the bots have a stretch for a week before returning them to their best mode.
The favourite bots of the month are set up on and around the tv, its a fave place for various skydiving and general pranking within the ranks. Fast Action Battler Bee is in the lead with the most attempted skydives, while Movie Bumblebee is seen to be the one that trips up all the others, maybe his evil inside?!. Bumblebee Ops is currently missing his knee... hmmm

Thanks. :):) Glad you do.
That's about to go some changes actually. Got me some new"scaffold" shelves from Freedom - black tempered glass shelves. Also hoping to get some of those IKEA glass display cabinets to complement it, when I get the chance to go to one... so far for one who commutes heheh

Used to have them all in vehicle modes, but as the collection grew I had to change that to robot modes. The likes of the Seekers or Aerialbots take up a lot less shelf space when not in plane modes.
In Melbourne I used to have them all displayed according to size and which universe they came from. Then I would have a seperate set of shelves for some more of the famous bots I had multiple versions of (like having 8 different Soundwaves all standing next to each other)

I display 90% of them as robot mode, if i have doubles i will display them in each mode. Also depending on whether one of their modes looks crap, for example ironhide and ratchet, i will display them in their better looking mode, vehicle mode!

there should be a third option to this poll something along the lines of
"I display largely in bot mode but many are displayed in vehicle mode and they randomly change from time to time"
While th bot modes are generally where the primary feel of transformers is founded, I tend to prioritise my collecting to strong alternate modes that I like and of course characters I like, as such I like the vehicle modes, and displaying them in both gives my display a feeling of dynamicism, I change something at least a couple times a week.
For my G1 characters, right now I only have some G1 figures up at my parents house, they are also mixed, many of the G1 vehicle modes were very good.
I have all my g1 collection up here in sydney packed away to allow room on my shelves at the moment for Movie, Animated, classics and Prime toys.
