Came across this awesome little design for a Targetmaster/Smashmaster 'Seismus' (http://www.shapeways.com/model/507613/?materialId=6) via Shapeways, costing roughly $15 + postage.

You can get some really cool custom tf stuff from shapeways (that you certainly can't get anywhere else) but they can be quite expensive. Some nifty upgrades for classics figures are available, if I remember correctly

Yes, I'm really liking some of the stuff available:

* Classics Defcon upgrade set (http://www.shapeways.com/model/687917/?materialId=6) for Generations Scourge. Just came across a pro-customizer who's done a really good job (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TRANSFORMERS-CUSTOM-G1-classic-generations-DEVCON-/330803749947?pt=US_Action_Figures&hash=item4d0570a43b#ht_10993wt_1271) at making this upgrade set shine.
* IDW First Aid upgrade set (http://www.shapeways.com/model/649978/?materialId=45) for Prime Ratchet.
* IDW Fistitron/Ironfist upgrade set (http://www.shapeways.com/model/660159/?materialId=7) for DOTM Ratchet. There's a second set that comes with a head sculpt without a bullet hole.

I've actually ordered a few things from fakebusker83 for my TF Prime figures. They should be here Monday. I'll let you know what I think of them.

IF they arrive I'll let you know how they are. It's a big IF though because...

Why did it come to Melbourne only to be sent to Dubai!

Your package has gone for another round the world trip!

I wouldn't be too worried about that though. Tracking results can sometimes be vary vague or confusing. It's probably with Auspost

That's my dilemma too! :(

Doesn't make much sense... unless UPS believed your item to have arrived too early and felt it necessary to honour this part of Shapeways' shipping policy...

From http://www.shapeways.com/support/shipping:

Delivery time
We try to get your product to you within 2-3 weeks, depending on the material.
Shipping time
Typically it will take UPS 2-3 days to ship your product. For some countries, such as Australia, shipping might take as much as five days. You will receive a UPS tracking email once we have shipped your order. You can use this email to track your package. It also has the UPS details of your order in it should there be any issues with the UPS delivery.

LOL very possible ^

I am planning on taking lots of photos for you pre and post painted. The items I've ordered are a new cannon+blade for Prime Rid voyager Megatron, pistols+blades for Prime RiD deluxe Arcee, lots of parts for Prime RiD Knockout and hand blasters for Prime RiD Cliffjumper.

My shapeways package arrive this afternoon. I'm not sure yet if I'm happy with these or not. I had them printed in white strong and flexible (which is what it said theyd tested it in) but I think maybe a smoother more detailed material would have been better. They seem a bit rough for my liking and sanding these tiny pieces is very difficult. Im going to spray Arcees pistols and blades tonight and we will see how that turns out. I'll put pics up tomorrow. I was trying to take some of the unpainted items but the white is very hard to get a clear shot of.

How does the material compare with the official Hasbro stuff?

Well it seems very rough. It's not smooth at all. I really feel like I should have paid more and used frosted detail or even frosted ultra detail. The white strong flexible feels reasonably strong and has more flex than the Hasbro stuff but it doesn't feel as strong. I'm not gonna try breaking it though. Next stuff I order (if any) I will try detail or ultra detail.

Anyway I have tried spraying Arcees pistols/blades and hand painted Megatrons blade. Hand painting with acrylics seems to be the way to go because this materials sucks the paint up. Here's a pricy of Meg's with a new fusion cannon

Sorry it's not that great. Used my iphone4 and left the bumblebee case on which cases the camera to blur slightly and gives the edges a yellow tinge

They'll always have that roughness. It's a byproduct of the 3D printing process, which uses a resin dust to print.

It's a characteristic of 3D printing, and is to be expected from anything you get done, for now.

The creator of Seismus, fakebuster83 from TFW2005, has mentioned that Detail is even softer (see: http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/radicons-customs/579789-smashmaster-seismus-shapeways-5.html#post7989162 from this original TFW2005 thread (http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/radicons-customs/579789-smashmaster-seismus-shapeways-5.html#post7989162)).

He later suggests White Strong Flexible Polished (about 2 Euro's more expensive), which polishes off the grainy texture for you - when I eventually get to ordering Seismus, I'll probably pay for WSF Polished too :) Because Seismus has ball joints, I don't think its a good idea for me to order any softer material.

Why aren't you happy with the purple edge?

There's a couple of blotches of purple that don't look right. Perfectionist. I'm finding it really hard to paint it perfectly because its not a smooth surface. Does anyone know if the the white strong and flexible polished is smooth? I'm leaving it as is for the moment because I still have 3 other sets to paint and a bunch of reprolabels to apply too.

i've gotten transparent detail and that seems pretty smooth and allows for light pipping

frosted detail is the cleanest most smooth but brittle

i've gotten the punch/counterpunch kit (head and hands), guzzle kit (chest and head) for ROTF hailstorm, roadbuster head for crossovers iron man/cap, pyro head, chromia head for prime arcee, idw first aid for prime ratchet and iron fist with bullet hole head

they're all pretty niffty and allows you to add more characters to your collection

theheretic
14th October 2012, 07:34 PM
How brittle is it? Is it likely/easy to break during transformation? I'm ordering a couple more pieces but I'm unsure what to order them in. There's an ultra detail frosted, is it any smoother?

depends on what the pieces are, its not like it will fall apart, but you need to be careful with transformations, eps if it has alot of small delicate moving pieces, from what i understand its over time, not immediate

i like getting heads in transparent detail if light pipping is available, or any detail type, to me they're pretty smooth

strong and flexible are good for less detail pieces like guns/weapons but usually will require some sanding if you want a smoother look

i've bought heads in both strong and flexible and detail and prefer the detail option, the details don't come out competley on the strong and flexible

hope that helps

I'm not as familiar with 3D printing of metals, but from my understanding yes, they are grainy as well, but it's easier to handle.

I look forward to seeing them. I'm still on the fence about ordering, given the low cost of the items and high cost of the shipping. To order one or two just isn't cost effective.

UltraMarginal

the "Resolution" on printing metals isn't as tight as it is with the strong white flexible plastic. as a result the lines/layers are more pronounced. The alumide has a nice finish, not smooth, but looks nice.
