I tried it once as a little kid in Ballarat. Didn't get any gold -- it was just for the novelty and learning about the Gold Rush.

I tried it once at Sovereign Hill (http://www.sovereignhill.com.au/). Being a large tourist attraction, I wouldn't suggest going there to actually find gold ;)

Mogo - South of Ulladulla, not to fr, I think - Did gold panning if recollection serves. It was about 20 years ago that I went though.

I've been panning with my dad in Victoria, he likes to go where the old gold fields were from the rush days, which was pretty much everywhere.

I'm not very good, but I'd suggest streams, areas of small rivers that get wet when the river is running high, and then stay wet when it's low due to less rainfall.
around bends in streams where the water turns and silt deposits on the far corner of the bend.

essentially places where flow changes and things being carried in the water are likely to fall out of the flow and be deposited. and you'll need a water supply near where you dig, so you can actually pan.

i would double check that you can't pan in national parks, I'm not sure. not worth the fine if you shouldn't though.

Yep Old Mogo Town would be the closest place to go. About 10 minutes south of Batemans Bay. Feel free to pop in and say hi on your way down :)
