My first GPS from a few years back took a very long time to pick up the sat, up to 15 minutes depending on location and weather. Sometimes it would pick up in seconds.
My new phone GPS is much more effective, picks up the satellite in around 30 seconds.

Is it new? If so, return it. These days any GPS should be recieving a signal within 30 seconds, as Kup said. Any longer than that and it's pretty poor.
If its an old one you've had for a while that suddenly stopped working, then it's time to let it go.
Keep in mind that if you're inside, or in an area with lots of high buildings around, or it's a pretty overcast day then it will struggle to find you. Should be right once it locks on to you though.
