View Full Version : People buying you Transformers as gifts

What's everyone's stand towards when people who don't know much about transformers try to buy you one as a gift?
My old boss (also a family friend) just sent me a text for my birthday asking me what my favourate colour of Transformer is out of Black, Blue, Red or Yellow
I'm happy that he's trying to get me something I'd like but I'm kinda worried he'll get me something I don't want/ already have
that sounds kinda selfish I know, but it's more that I don't want him to waste money on something I don't nesecarilly want. but I'm sure some of you guys go through similar stuff, so yeah, what's your opinion of when well meaning friends/other people try to buy you a transformer?
---------------------------------------
by the way, I told him Black, I'm guessing he's probably gonna give me a DOTM Skids now,
I'm guessing
Red = Prime Cliffjumper
Yellow = Prime or DOTM Bumblebee or FOC Swindle
Blue = Prime Arcee or Soundwave
Black = all I could think of is the DOTM twins

I'm of the same opinion as you. It's very thoughtful of the person but ultimately collecting Transformers is a very personal thing in terms of likes and dislikes, and odds are the person buying is going to choose poorly.
I prefer my brothers approach: What do you want for your birthday? G1 Overlord please! :D *Brother looks on eBay at prices* A pair of socks it is!

I actually get really annoyed when someone (read: relos) gets me something they thought I wanted, but all it proves is that they haven't bothered getting to know me well enough to care (has happened). Just seems like such a waste.
These days I make sure I know what I'm getting, especially if it's going to be expensive (read: Transformers). :p

For christmas in the past, i've told my mum what i already have... but given that i already have everything i want (or it's not out yet), i'm always resigned to the fact that i'm gonna get something i wasn't planning on getting!
Like ROTF Arcee :)
But even crap like that has a place in my collection in those circumstances (helps that it's not worth anything to sell as well! :D)

Yeah, I haven't had much luck with gifted tf's .
what's been bought for me.......and what has happened to them shortly after...
Mr potatohead Prime and BB - given away
Ultimate BB - Sold
TF torch - sitting on my bench and annoying me.....
legends size dotm Jetfire Sold
metal sculpture Optimus prime.... given away
legends size (universe?) Starscream trying to sell
legends size (universe?) Megatron Sitting with my small tank posse and i really like him...:)
Titanium megatron. trying to get rid of..
so not great odds in my experience (still, 01 is better than 00)
I still always appreciate the thought but would rather they buy me (or themselves) a beer or something ,or ring me 1st and suggest what they're going to buy me, that's what i do if the role is reversed

Apart from getting a figure i would not buy myself, i find it annoying that it is bought full retail price. If i had spent that cash i would have bought a figure i am after and possibly one a whole size class bigger.
Despite my whining though, these figures stand out in my collection -partly because i don't collect that particular line and partly because they remind me the gift, and i am happy with that.

I'm just really happy when someone wants to give me something as a gift. As jazzcomp said, it's really the thought that counts - regardless of whether I have it or not. If I already have the toy, then I simply keep the double sealed and it goes toward my little MISB/MOSC collection. :) That way I have a few doubles that I'm keeping sealed, but I didn't pay for them, and I'm keeping the gift that my friends/relos gave me -- everyone's happy. :D
I personally don't find receiving a double as a sign that the person hasn't "gotten to know me," because quite frankly... my collection is just that big that it's not easy for people to remember/know what I have and don't have. They just get the toy and hope that I don't already have it -- and I'm perfectly fine with that. Cos I'd do exactly the same in their shoes. But my friends/relos seldomly get me Transformers because of that reason. :p
But honestly... when I receive a Transformer as a gift, I'm just so grateful to get something. I'd never complain about getting a double.

Could always hint them towards something you dont have already and may want, i personally have no problem telling people intending to buy me a TF what i want in particular as a gift as i would be even more thankful and grateful when i received something i really wanted.

I always give people a list so they know what I'm after, usually something I can't justify the price or just can't afford. Though I usually buy my own gifts these days, it's easier for more reason then the obvious.
I learnt my lesson last christmas though. Threw a monumental hissy fit cause I thought people were going to get me what they thought I wanted without listening to me (which is what usually happens). Christmas day and I ate humble pie cause my partner had brought me HotToys Beserker Predator. Best. Gift. Ever.
I know it's the thought that counts. I'd just like someone to put the thought into it. Barring last christmas of course.
I sound ungrateful..don't I?

I just receive money nowadays. Gone are the days when I get a toy. Also they know Ive got an extensive collection and most have seen my toyroom so they won't bother coz they know it might be a figure I already have. Frankly I like getting money instead. As I can buy something else from it :D:D. I usually end up buying something else really. Like for my Bday this year I got me some clothing, I treated myself to eating out in a nice little Jap resto and got myself a massage :):)

From the opposing perspective, I probably won't ever get a collector something I don't understand the same way I don't buy a book for someone I don't know. My partner has tried hard to surprise me with things I don't have (ROTF Devastator, HFTD Bumblebee, Classics Silverbolt), which was really amazing, but I ultimately see plastic addiction as an issue that I can't/won't get over anytime soon :p

Not the toys, though. At least, not that I've ever seen. Haven't watched that show for so long I don't recall a car mode.
Yeah, I don't mind getting duplicates of Transformer toys, but when so called friends/family don't even know you're into TFs (even after you've made it plainly obvious) then that's when I know they don't care. It turned out to be true in my case, there was a massive "family" breakup shortly after. If you get gifts from friends/family even though they aren't what you wanted exactly, it's the thought that counts yes, but when the thought wasn't even there then that's another matter.

Choose one out of that set of three.:)

Ahh... I see the car mode now, it looks like a dragster! He just gets more awesome the more I learn about him. :) And it looks like it takes very little to go from jet <--> car. I haven't had that particular toy for very long myself (legends size Cybertron Megs) and am still waiting for the instruction sheet (thanks matt-bilby :D) so that explains my lack of knowledge here! Thanks for the link, I tried searching for info but couldn't find anything useful!

I sound ungrateful..don't I?
Eeh... this whole thread sounds ungrateful to me.
When I was a child I would like it when someone got me a Transformer toy I didn't have. I wasn't as happy if I got a crummy Go-Bot or socks... and getting duplicates was disappointing because they got regifted by my mum! But as an adult, I appreciate the sentiment and the meaning that's gone behind a thoughtful gift. And if someone is willing to buy me a Transformer toy/product -- regardless of what it is, I think it's thoughtful and I very happy to receive it. And sometimes I can see the disappointment in my friends when they discover that I already have the toy, but I try to cheer them up by assuring them that I will keep it! I usually keep them sealed, or I might open it and customise it! :)
I do sometimes. It's my attempt at trying to acknowledge their individual passion/interest, even if I don't share it. And that's how I see it when people buy me Transformers stuff, even if I have it or don't want it. I'm just stoked that they've acknowledged that I'm a Transformers enthusiast and put some thought into the gift - especially if it's Transformers related! :D
Yeah I'm grateful he's getting me anything, and even moreso since he's gone to the trouble of trying to get me a Transformer, and no matter what he gets me I'll still be happy to recieve anything at all regardless of whether or not it's a double. but there's still that little part of me that thinks he'd be better off just giving me a gift card or something since then I can make sure I get someting I'd actually want. no matter what transformer he gets me I'll be gratefull and cherish it (even if it does turn out to be DOTM Skids)
^100% agree. Gift cards/cash would be nicer, but I'm perfectly happy with any TF gift I receive. It's a gift! If I want a toy that I don't have I'll go buy it myself!

Oh right, yes, in that case I agree. :) Considering that I wear TF apparel 24/7 and I constantly have a Transformer toy with me -- anyone who doesn't notice that I'm into TFs doesn't have a pulse. :p But in regards to people buying you Transformers as a gift -- I think that's just brilliant, regardless of what that Transformer product is. :)

My wife does sometimes really awesome and sometimes terrible at the Transformer gifts. The best she ever did was buy me this awesome Transformers double bed spread with all this great comic style art on it that I had never known existed! She has also got me some cool stuff like Hardhead Busts: Ravage and a bunch of shirts from Jay Jays.
On the OTHER hand, last year she bought me a little DOTM Leadfoot. I then told her how not only did I already have it, but I had SHOWED it to her not more than a week ago (shows how much attention she pays sometimes). But its the thought that counts. This year is my 35th (in 6 days!) so I just went and got MP Prime and G2 FOC Bruticus and told her that those are my pressies on her behalf :D
These days with TF girfts I have tried to rationalize it that if someone gets me a TF I already have that means I get to have one in the box and one to play with :)

I had this problem solved ages ago - my wife is literally the only one that I receive gifts from (I have no parents or grandparents) so I simply buy what I want and give it to her to give back to me :D
Only once did I receive a Transformer that I didn't want; it was from work colleagues on my last day... I ended up giving it to my next door neighbours kid.
Never say yellow.
That makes Yukitora sad :(

That is some sound thinking. Maybe if they bring Soundwave you can exchange your original purchase. That way you can say (if they ever ask) that they bought you that Soundwave and you bought yourself SB.. everyone's happy........ either , either

Cheers mate! Plan did not work - the wife did not bring home an extra one as apparently letting me buy MP Prime, G2 Bruticus, Swindle, Brawl & 3 Bot Shtos was considered enough. And my friends gave me a big tackle box. But hey - I ave FOC Soundwave so I'm pretty happy as is (though I still want Soundblaster - he burns within me!) :)

When I was younger I kept an updated list of the TFs I had for my parents, so they wouldn't double up with presents.
My friends didn't have this list so I got some doubles as birthday presents. I traded a duplicate Pipes at school. I still have two Chases but I think one broke so it was good having a spare. And my second Overbite was rechristened Jawbreaker and I applied his stickers... how I wanted to! Instructions be damned! :)
