I doubt it would make the story any less coherent.

Reshoots are common, particularly in summer films. Unless it's extensive, I don't think its anything to be (more) concerned about. It can come from an audience not getting a plot point, or a scene being deemed as too slow (and being cut/replaced), or designed to enhance something that already exists to give it more of a punch in that moment of the film.

This doesn't sound anything out of the normal for a film that is in post-production. Now, we might not be knowing the full extent, but based purely on that article, I wouldn't stress about it.

I noted that, but my point was - you don't hear directors or producers publicly admitting to any script changes that late in production, as it can affect confidence in the film by the consumers, distributors and theatres.

Sure, have some re-workings of the pace or visuals in a scene... but not an actual "script" change months after filming has finished. That suggests something significant was missed or changed during the filming process (even if it isn't true, that's how it reads, so should never have said "script changes", but instead say something less worrying, like "additional set-up visuals").

Script changes happen daily. Some things are only figured out in the editing. Have you heard of colour pages and what they refer to in terms of scripts?

Captain America 2 has just had reshoots. Thor 2 had reshoots.

I don't think we're talking World War Z level reshoots here. That was a big one, and it worked.

We would have heard more if it was more extensive, given just how rabid the fanbase is.

I guess they consider using the industry terms rather than dumbing it down for people not involved in said industry.

In addition, this film is too big to be sunk before release at this point. Opening weekend will be massive, and after that will depend on reviews/repeat theatrical viewers. It will do its massively inflated opening weekend, and probably drop off 40% for weekend 2.

One of the cross-promotion items for TF4 will be Oreo cookies (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-toys-products-30/casting-for-transformers-4-age-of-extinction-oreo-commercial-178663/) (an American "icon" biscuit that started appearing at our grocery chains when our dollar approached parity - it was cheap enough to import to compete).

So expect to see some significant product placement in TF4... like most movies these days.

Where do you shop Griffin? You obviously missed the Oreo's in the cookie section of Coles and Woolworths for the last 15 or 20 years. I think it's Kraft that sells them here.

After Kraft was sold to Nabisco (in America), and it was cheaper to purchase & import American-made products in the last 10 years, they became a regular item on the store shelves. Before that, they had random sporadic shipments, as I would sometime see them and was amazed at them showing up here (after seeing them everywhere when I was in America... a bit like our TimTams or Shapes being everywhere here), but they were like over-priced luxury items due to the exchange rate, so weren't around much.

Back on topic though, apparently there are some details about what is being filmed this week in China, but it is on a Chinese website, so doesn't seem to load up for me... so some vague details are on the TFW site (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/more-details-on-transformers-4-age-of-extinction-china-reshoot-179164/), claiming that it is to include an extra scene of (CGI) robot fighting.

Well I just got spoilt going to TFW.

TFW has a spoiler about Optimus as it's first headline. (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/walmart-display-reveals-transformers-4-age-of-extinction-flat-nose-truck-optimus-prime-179247/) <spoiler

No big deal, but it would have been nice not to know there are two Optimus Prime's.

One of the actors has spoken about TF4 (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/titus-welliver-says-transformers-4-is-not-a-kids-movie-179339/) "NOT being a kids movie".
Which isn't new. The second and third ones had a lot of violence, and I think DOTM was the one that had trouble getting under an R rating in America.
And this is a new actor to the franchise, and he hasn't even seen the finished product, so unless there was heaps of blood, or heavy coarse language, or a sex scene in the parts he was in, I don't think he would have a clue.
But the funny thing is, if he is actually right... why have so many "under 5" toys if none of that age group would (should) be seeing this movie? (especially if it ends up being as bad as this guy claims)

If I had a kid (say 4 or 5 years old) I personally wouldn't let them see a PG13/M15 movie until after I had seen it cause there is content in some of those movies a really young kid might be traumatised by. (I am using the word traumatised in a loose manner). I know my cousin who is 7 is a bit traumatised by the violence in the LOTR movies and Ironman was a bit to much for him. Knowing that I advised his parents that DOTM was probably to much for him with so much violence against humans.

I wouldn't take the fact there are kids toys as automatically meaning any movie is appropriate for kids. When I was a kid I had toys from an R18+ movie called Aliens and that is very inappropriate for kids.;)

I'm not letting either of my kids see these movies until they're at least 9 years of age. I'll probably up-that to 10 when they turn 9 :p I haven't let them watch TF:Prime yet either.

Sounds like someone got a spanking over those comments, as a bit of backtracking is now in order (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/titus-welliver-takes-back-his-comment-regarding-transformers-4-age-of-extinction-179392/)... changing his statement to sound more like "not JUST a kids movie", which the earlier ones never were just for kids anyway. (or should be seen by young kids to begin with)
Because, even if it isn't suitable for kids under a certain age, Paramount (and Bay for his commission) don't want parents to know about it until after they've paid for the tickets and started watching it. There might be a rating on the film, but while the theme is a "kids toyline", they are going to want kids and parents to pay money to see it (who won't even notice if it says PG or M).
But if the media publicise comments from any official or related source saying that certain people should not watch it, Bay and Paramount don't even get the chance to get money from people who will blindly assume it is okay for kids (based on the Brand being for kids).

And even if the movie was more kid-friendly than expected, it goes to my earlier comments, that individual actors in any movie will only get to see a glimpse of the total project, like looking through a peephole, or being one person on a long assembly line - you only see a small fraction of the complete picture.

Apparently the first full-length trailer could be out within the week, as it has been given a rating in Canada (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/transformers-4-age-of-extinction-first-trailer-rated-by-ofrb-179388/), which is said to give it a time frame of being in theatres (and online) the following week.
It is listed as being 2m 22s long, and is rated at PG (the trailer, not the movie).
This is likely to be the trailer for America and here, but if not, we should see it online within days of its release to theatres.

A video clip of Peter Cullen (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-toys-products-30/peter-cullens-recording-session-for-transformers-4-age-of-extinction-merchandise-179403/) recording lines for a Movie toy or merchandise.
None of it should be movie spoilers, as it is random generic phrases that will likely be on one of the electronic toys.

It's interesting for me to listen to that clip (you don't see Cullen though), and be able to visualise both Peter and Optimus speaking.

Really I remember my Mum renting one of the Aliens movies on VHS from the video store for me when I was around 14 or so and it had R18+ on it. All I remember is at the end Sigourney Weaver committed suicide by falling into a vat of something. Thats the one time I watched one of those movies, never seen one again.

That's Alien³, which still should have been M or MA depending on the cut. (But that doesn't mean it wasn't scary or disturbing.)

When did the MA rating come in though? I remember AO tv shows & movies as a kid (I used to watch Fast Forward on TV which was rated AO when I was in grade 5) , but was too little to pay attention to cinema/video shop ratings.

I can't remember dates but the classifications on TV were different than the cinema when I was a kid, then at some point they started using the governments rating system for the cinema on TV. Now TV is back too their own thing, replacing MA15+ and R18+ with AV15+ and AV18+.

1993, MA(15+) came in, so with Alien³ (a 1992 film) it was M in the cinemas, but then MA when the Director's Cut was released.

Sorry to take it away from the more interesting discussion that this topic has had so far :p but, some new Movie news....

Two Movie posters have been revealed, showing off the two main Human characters (no robots yet in either of them) - Marky Mark (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/first-transformers-4-age-of-extinction-character-poster-reveals-mark-wahlberg-as-cade-yeager-179412/) and some Irish guy (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/second-transformers-4-age-of-extinction-character-poster-featuring-jack-reynor-as-shane-dyson-179414/) who has a very limited acting resume.

I can understand Mark being highlighted as the replacement of Shia, and because he probably got the biggest pay-packet for this movie (and thus, the biggest investment... so we'll probably see more of him than the Robots combined).

The tagline on both posters is, "The Rules Have Changed"... and if they are focusing more on the humans in the publicity, it certainly has.

Yes, coming soon, Transformers Mark Wahlberg - Age of Extinction.

On a more interesting note, according to Michael Bay, the (full?) Trailer will be released to the internet sometime tomorrow (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/transformers-4-first-trailer-to-debut-tomorrow-179413/) - March 5th at 01.30 UTC (http://time.is/UTC) (which is March 5th 12.30pm in Sydney/Melbourne, or 11.30am for those of you lucky enough to be in Brisbane ;) )

If you get to see it first in about 21 hours time, start up a review topic in this news section, for everyone's comments and critiques of the Trailer (if it is the full 2 & a bit minutes that has been rumoured).

I'm pretty sure that was the plan after TF2 as well, which is why he had to be "bribed" by Hasbro with royalties from every toy produced for the third movie just to get him to come back for the third one.
Something in the order of a couple percent of each Movie toy, which I read somewhere, earned him more than the royalties from the actual movie. (can't recall off-hand where that was though)

The main girl in the movie (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/another-character-poster-for-transformers-4-age-of-extinction-featuring-nicola-peltz-as-tessa-yeager-179422/), and, it's Optimus looking very human (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/transformers-4-age-of-extinction-optimus-prime-character-poster-179423/) (how the heck are the designers supposed to turn that into a truck... without a backpack of flat panels).

Too much power to keep Bay coming back, is making it more difficult to translate his visions into toys.

On a more creative note, this movie's internet marketing campaign is actually hidden in today's Trailer. The phone number to report Transformers on, on a billboard near the start of the trailer, apparently has a recorded message to direct you to a website for you to register for updates (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/transformers-4-age-of-extinction-viral-marketing-campaign-179425/).
The site is transformersaredangerous.com (http://www.transformersaredangerous.com/)and it allows you to register your email address (with date of birth and zip-code - it requires 5 digits, so add a zero in front of your post code, or just type in something random). It is likely to have clips, or "secret" footage or info, like the Sector 7 site did for the first movie.

Just sourcing the commission Bay makes on the Movie toys (http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2009/0622/celebrity-09-transformers-michael-bay-making-movies-enemies-money.html). (I knew I heard it from somewhere)

His deal with Hasbro is second only to that of George Lucas, who gets an estimated 15% royalty on all Star Wars figures. Bay gets an estimated 8% on Transformer toys tied to movies.

The entire article is an interesting read. Explaining how he earns so much now, due to being paid small up-front fees in his early movies, making other people rich off his work... so now he negotiates a post-revenue payment, to make a percentage of all profits of all items sold off his "product" including DVDs and toys.
It has made him one of the highest paid people in Hollywood in recent years (http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/features/2010/03/top-hollywood-earners-201003), with about US$125 million in 2009 - breaking down to 75 from Movie profit, 28 from DVD sales commission, and 12.5 just from the TF2 toys commission.

And that was for the second movie, which he wanted to do... one can only imagine what deal he got for the third and fourth one, to get him coming back.

His earnings for TF3 was said to be about US$160 million (http://michaelbay.com/articles/michael-bay-top-forbes-list-of-highest-paid-filmmakers/), on top of the 125 for TF2, and 82 million last year (http://www.forbes.com/profile/michael-bay/)... I don't know what he is spending his money on, but with the money he is making each year recently, he was apparently only worth US$200 million after TF3. (http://www.therichest.com/celebnetworth/celeb/director/michael-bay-net-worth/)

TF1 earned him 75 (http://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/michael-bays-earnings-for-2007-transformers-reported/16190/)...
TF2 earned him 125...
TF3 earned him 160...
TF4.... wow, he could be making over 200 million this year.

It seems that a gun manufacturer has been promoting a product (handgun) of theirs (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/new-transformers-4-age-of-extinction-sill-image-featuring-sophia-miles-179522/) that will be on TF4, and are showing a (photo-shopped) image from the movie.

WTF? A movie that is essentially aimed at kids and teens (being toy-related), is being associated with the promotion of handguns, in a similar fashion as GM cars?
Is this how Michael Bay doesn't pay for anything, by having all the props be tied up in cross-promotions?

For anyone collecting the Movie posters, a fifth one has surfaced, with another one of the Human cast - Li Bingbing (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/new-transformers-4-age-of-extinction-character-poster-featuring-li-bingbing-as-su-yueming-179433/).

wow

I know as well, but didn't think he'd go so far as including handguns as part of the cross-promotion, just to get them for free. I guess he really is a patriotic, military nut.

The first video was quite interesting (I watched the whole 6 minutes).

Yep Bay certainly loves him some modern military

However use of firearms as endorsement in an toy related movie may be going slightly a bit far...

Someone in Linkin Park must be related to Michael Bay, or he owns them... as it looks like they could be back for the fourth Movie (at least, according to a comment by the main vocalist of the group (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/linkin-park-involved-with-transformers-4-age-of-extinction-179529/)).
I don't mind them (I don't hate them, or really love them), but it just seems odd that they are being recruited for every Transformers Movie.

Going by the trailer I'd say LP's new single "Guilty all the same" is a safe bet to be in TF4. The song has been released on Youtube with a lyric video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEaEdLQbAFM) but they have not released a music video yet so you might even get a TF4 related music video.

Either Bay has had some new ideas and wants to include them, or he's found something missing in making the plot work and needs to bridge a couple scenes with this new scene.
After doing some reshoots already a couple months ago in China, this is getting a bit late to be changing or fixing parts of the movie like this.

Also, an entertainment magazine has an article on the TF4 movie (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-just-movie-31/entertainment-weekly-reveals-new-details-on-transformers-4-age-of-extinction-new-grimlock-image-179675/), with some plot details... so beware of spoilers.

The car used for the character of Lockdown has also been shown off/reviewed (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/transformers-movie-toys-products-30/transformers-4-age-of-extinction-meet-lockdown-179641/) to promote it.

However, the interview mentions that a certain villain truck was constructed and donated by Daimler Trucks, at a cost of US$1.5 million.

That's some investment in getting someone's product on the screen... it's no wonder random products are lining up to be included in this movie.

Its only just occurred to me, but there seems a serious imbalance in the Wave 1 and Wave 2 Decepticons. We have Galvatron and Lockdown, and that's it.........
Are they saving the Decepticons for Wave 3, or is it a plot element?

griffin
26th May 2014, 09:14 PM
According to the leaked Hasbro database listing, there was only 4 Decepticons... and all the rest were Autobots and Dinobots.

The Decepticons on the database listing were - Galvatron, Lockdown, Stinger, Rally Car (Vehicon).

But it isn't the first time that they are producing a lot more Autobots than Decepticon toys for the Movies.
For the third movie...
- mainline (Deluxe, Voyager, Leader), there were 25 Autobot toys (http://www.toycollectors.com.au/collections/griffinofoz/c25s1.jpg) verses 8 Decepticon toys (http://www.toycollectors.com.au/collections/griffinofoz/c25s2.jpg). That's a ratio of 3 to 1, or 75% were Autobots.
- Human Alliance, there were 14 Autobot toys verses 3 Decepticon toys (http://www.toycollectors.com.au/collections/griffinofoz/c25.html). That's almost 5 to 1.
- Cyberverse (Legion, CMDR, Action sets), there were 22 Autobot toys verses 11 Decepticon toys (http://www.toycollectors.com.au/collections/griffinofoz/c24s4.jpg). A ratio of 2 to 1.
- Gimmick toys, there were 25 Autobot toys verses 9 Decepticon toys (http://www.toycollectors.com.au/collections/griffinofoz/c24s5.jpg). Almost 4 to 1.
- Hasbro Exclusives (http://www.toycollectors.com.au/collections/griffinofoz/c24s3.jpg), there were about (http://www.toycollectors.com.au/collections/griffinofoz/c25s3.jpg) 46 Autobot toys verses (http://www.toycollectors.com.au/collections/griffinofoz/c24s0.jpg) about 12 Decepticons. Again, almost 4 to 1.

That totals about 132 Autobot toys verses about 43 Decepticon toys in the 6-8 months of the TF3 toyline... about 75% are Autobots, 25% Decepticons.

A massive imbalance during TF3 despite having a bigger cast of Decepticons than TF1 & TF2... but perhaps retailers demanded more good-guy toys, if kids and parents were not buying/receiving villain toys as gifts.

I think this fourth movie is going to be even more out of balance, as we appear to only have 4 Decepticon characters, and very few toys so far known (or leaked).

I think you've hit the nail right on the head there. I have some old donated/junker figures and other toys in my classroom (8 year olds) and the figures always left over are the Cons, bar an animated Leader Megatron and Energon Screamer!
