View Full Version : What is your best Christmas present memory?

I thought this might be good considering Christmas is just around the corner, it may also give some Mums and Dads a good idea or two :)

My bithday is two days before Christmas so most of my life the memories of awesome Transformers or MOTU presents blend into one and I can never remember if they were for birthday or Christmas, one good thing though is doing a double present to get something really big. Anyway.....

My best memory was in 1985 and it was the present from Santa. My sister and I got up early as usual to tear open our presents, we had a fire place back then so we would hang our Santa sacks over it. When we got there my Sister had her present but my sack was missing (hehe sack) So Mum and Dad said we needed to go try and find it because Santa must have dropped it somewhere, so we went out into the backyard and started searching. Dad pointed up to the chimney and there was something wrapped in the sack sitting on top of it. So he lifted me on the roof and I went up and got it, I peeked inside and it was Snake Mountain!!! Best present ever.
Due to it's size Santa couldn't get it down the chimney. A great idea by Mum and Dad.

My fondest memories of Xmas was the year my parents bought me G1 Megatron, Soundwave, Optimus Prime, and G1 Grimlock from my Grandpa and Nanna the following year. They all sit in my cabinet looking as awesome as they did nearly 30 years ago when I ripped them out of their boxes.

When we were living up in Broome, Mum and Dad bought me and my brother Castle Greyskull to share. After all the excitement of getting it out and putting it together we found one tiny piece missing (the little bird/gargoyle thing that went on the end of the elevator string) so we had to go sifting through our big bin and after about 20 minutes, we found it... Good times
The day Christmas nearly went pear-shaped

More recently- Last christmas was Victory Leo and Overlord and the one before was Takara MP Grimlock (but it's not the same when you're not a kid and you picked the prezzie yourself:o)

Christmas 84/85. One word: Jetfire.

To be honest I can't remember what year that was but yeah... Jetfire.

:eek:Now your pushing it, I don't know if I can remember that far back:o. The one I remember with the fondest memories was when a lot of the family all got together at my Aunties one year (my mother was one of 9 children, She was also the youngest by quite a few years). I think I was about 4 or 5 years old (1971-72:o), My sister and I woke up and ran into the lounge to see a Xmas tree almost buried by presents (Tree was about 1650mm). Can't remember any of the presents but I do remember the morning:), Doesn't get any better than that;):)

Not sure the exact year but it was looking bleak... I had asked for Optimus Prime from Santa and I remember dad showing me a half page ad in the Sunday Mail in the lead up to Christmas from Optimus Prime apologising because he was sold out and would not be available until February the following year! :(

Well that resulted in a trip to the Hypermarket and I can still picture the sight of one entire aisle at the entrance (three shelves higher than I could reach) wall to wall TFs . I asked for from the selection there (and got) Jetfire from Santa, picked out Thrust for my Grandparents to give me and Ravage and Rumble – or the red cassette so as not to offend anyone – from my Nan and Pop.

They were all received gleefully Christmas day... and still remember my Grandad eliciting laughs from everyone when I “bombed” him with one of Thrust’s missiles and he handed it back saying, “Yeah, well as long as they don’t explode; had enough of that crap during the war.”

Heh, me too. Was a couple years older though.
That year I was told to pick what I wanted out of the catalogues (yeah, a lot of thought went into the gifts that year, to buy our affection )... so I pointed at the largest biggest TFs toy I could find. And sure enough, got it. :D

My fondest memory was the first time I received Transformers for Christmas. G2 Skram and Eagle Eye; I think I was 5 years old at the time, the Christmas before I started grade 1. :D

Although I'm not as old, I got my first TF, for christmas, back in '05. I watched only G1 back then (boomerang reruns) and I really wanted a G1 Optimus Prime, so I asked for op for Christmas.
But, as you know, it wasn't the 80s anymore and Cybertron was out, so I got the Cybertron Optimus Prime figure (still have) which was awesome (couldn't tell the difference) from santa and I cherished and still cherish that toy.
At first, I thought, like g1 optimus, that the legs went backwards, until I read the instructions. :p:o
I still have Prime and he is one of my favourites in my collection, not just because it was my first TF, but it is also very G1-esque. It is currently kind of my Classicsverse Optimus at this point. (not entirely though- in my UT display)
It also kept my love for tfs alive, by getting me into the Cybertron cartoon.
Good times, good times...:D

Cybertron Leader Class Optimus Prime is a _sweet_ toy IMHO. (^O^)

Heh. My addiction began a few months before Xmas of 1984 with G1 Brawn and Huffer (from HobbyCo!). Xmas of that year I got Skywarp, so that was my 1st TF Xmas pressie, and my 1st ever boxed Transformer (remember when getting boxed toys was a really big deal?). But getting the Horrorcons in '87 was the most memorable for me. :D

Christmas 84/85. One word: Jetfire.

Would've been 1985 at the earliest for Jetfire. :)

double ditto, though my first two were Skids and Thundercracker, Christmas of maybe 84/85, when I was 5 or 6. still have them both though well played with. Over the years though, I got some great Lego, 30-30 from Bravestar was also a standout.

Cybertron Optimus is one of my favourite Transformers! A cool toy and a great way to get into TFs.

Mine would be probably recieving my first TF. Cosmos. I had asked for Optimus Prime (Of course) but my parents got me Cosmos. At first I was disappointed a bit that it was Optimus (hey I would have been about 8 or so), but then I started to enjoy Cosmos. He's a frikkin' flying saucer! Probably got more fun out of Cosmos than I would have Prime at the time!

I remember the next year, I got together with my best bud and we made our Christmas wish list to give to our parents. It was pretty much the figures we hadn't got yet that were in the catalogue. And one year my parents bought Omega Supreme!

I remember being over joyed at this, it was awesome. But then his treads broke. So we took him back to Target (I can still picture how it looked and know which one it was) for a replacement. But they didn't have any more. I was crushed. So they asked if I wanted to get a Supreme later, or something else now. I opted for something else and got Octane.

bet my folks were relieved ;) And to show I made the right choice, which of those two has been reissued? :D

Aaah, good times, good times!

I guess that would be .... '85, I was in Grade 5. Got from my aunt Soundwave and Buzzsaw ( which I pretended/called Laserbeak in all my playtime) when she went for holidays back to Phils from here... which I then migrated the toy back here heheheh. both are still alive and in fairly good playable condition. :)

Dont mind the rest of the cassettrons, those I got for myself when I was in Uni - saving up from my meager allowance:P

I usually get asked more and receive toy presents on my Birthday than in Xmas. I usually get clothes and shoes for Xmas so yeah....

I've often wondered that when my son is old enough to watch the (G1) cartoons if he'll grow up thinking that it was current and end up wanting all the toys. Man, that could get expensive :p

Better stock up on Encore figures now then, that way if he asks (and knowing you keep MISB things) you have something already ready to give him heheheh;). Now that's planning ahead... unless he prefers gobots then youd be in great trouble :p

Some amazing pressies and great stories WOW!!

Remember if you have a G2 running around the house that in 18 - 28 years time they might be threading the same type of stuff to their online community. (Although by then it will be through some sort of cerebral cortex interface no doubt)
Cherish every moment you have with your little ones and if you don't have any, then just cherish every moment you have with your toys :):D

Not too big a toy - even by 1986 standards. I remember the first time I saw that toy and thought, "Oh..." :p It's a nice toy, don't get me wrong... but it's actually about the same height as Ultra Magnus (I think UM might be a wee bit taller). Obviously it's meant to be a city for the smaller carded Autobots, and in that regard it works well. Fortress Maximus came the year after and was the city for the larger boxed Autobots (re: Headmasters and Targetmasters). :)

I remember one year my grand parents got my brother and i a sack of toys each. Nothing big, smaller things lik an action figure, a matchbox car, a transformers etc.
When you're a kid its quantity over quality.
I got Dragstrip that year. I've still got it and i will never sell it.

Absolutely. Stuff like the central lift with launching ramp was clearly designed for the smaller carded Autobots that were relased in '87 too, and in Car Robot Brave Maximus works with both the larger Autobots (e.g. Car Robo Bros.) and the Spychangers (who are actually designed to be launched; the G2 GoBots were intended to be compatible with Hot Wheels launchers/playsets). Btw Hound was a boxed Transformer (although he is quite small :)).

Fortress Maximus, like Hasbro Overlord, was extremely rare in Australia (if indeed he was ever released here at all).

Given Christmas is nearly here (again) I thought I would bump this for peeps who couldn't post the first time (me :p)

So it was 2007. My dad had shown me the G1 Movie, then TF 1, then slowly we had bought all of the Madman G1 Boxsets (which I still have!) so I wanted G1 Transformers for Xmas. So my dad went online (whoa, the internet was around back then? lol :D) and asked me some of my favourite Transformers, and found them on a website that sells G1 bots loose and Mint.
We had gone to the Canberra relies and got an awesome loot!
A computer game thing which transformed from Movie Prime's head to a computer, G1 Wheeljack, Hoist, Brawn and Cosmos andd Cybertron Legends Scourge and Jetfire. Twas a good day :)

Your Dad is a very wise man :) I had just left Canberra in mid '06 but the garage sales and flea markets at Belco and Tuggers were still coming up with the goods. Pre movies was a good time to be a collector. It's great to read you had such a good Christmas so recently.

If I confine it to transformer related, my most memorable was about 2 years ago now. My wife had been going on and on about how awesome the 'presents' were that she had for me. She was so confident and as it turns out it was the first, and last, time she bought transformers for me.

So as it turned out, I used to buy a lot of my bots from RK. She knew this and one day bought me all the bots that she thought I was interested in. She based this on the screen I left open at the time which happened to be the latest arrivals screen full of things like the transforming hats/shoes and some movie bots and other random ones that have nothing to do with my collection. She spent $500 on bots I had no interest in!

I couldn't help but laugh and thankfully she wasn't upset. Although I tried to put on a happy face and smile once I saw the list. Thankfully they were on pre-order and RK hadn't posted. They were good enough to give me a store credit and I ordered the ones I was after :p

Gee that was a blast from the past. Surprise they haven't brought it back out. Never seemed to gain the same popularity as Mortal Kombat.

As for my favourite Christmas memory from my childhood, it would have to be the year I got G1 Ultra Magnus as a young kid. He is my favourite transformer of all time, and was always my Autobot Leader when I played because I didn't have Prime as a child.

As an adult, my favourite moment was a couple Christmas's ago when my son and I got a Generations Metroplex and Hasbro Masterpiece Optimus Prime each (I think they were the same year?). Being able to play around with them with my son was a real joy. Putting all the stickers on Metroplex took ages but brought me back to my childhood too.

Our family too had next too nixx but we didn't mind. But one Christmas day mum & dad came home with a black & white tv which family friend had donated to us when they upgraded to colour tv. It felt like we moved into the 20th century. I no longer had an excuse not to do school homework in reporting a federal, state & local government story from the tv news the previous night. :p

Wow, I've been thinking about it for a day or two and I don't have a 'best christmas present memory' story. Lots of horror stories about bad sh*t that went down on different X-Mass' but no best present ones. I never thought of it before - thats kinda depressing :(

Transformer wise I guess I got given a G1 Mirage for X-Mass by my sister in 1984 and a Devastator bust from my mum and my girlfriend in 2002. Those were both pretty good.

Old pictures like that with toys in it are pure gold. My brother was born in '86, but for some reason Galvatron shelf warmed for a long time in our local newsagent/toy shop and I bought it for him in the early 90's  Yeah, that's serious shelf warming.

When I was 20, I suffered severely with depression. That Christmas, my parents did everything they could to try to make me as comfortable and content as possible. That included buying me a whole bunch of new stuff, including Transformers, largely finishing off my Cybertron collection. But really it's the warmth and care they gave me during that time that makes this one probably my best Transformers Christmas memory.
