Some months ago, an image surfaced of a two-pack with Gaia Unicron and Optimus, but nothing was known about it.... or taken seriously when Unicron ended up being released on its own in Japan.
Now it looks like Hasbro HK/Asia is the ones releasing the two pack, as official images have surfaced (http://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/official-images-transformers-prime-cny-optimus-prime-and-gaia-unicron-combo-pack/26294/) on the fansite that has revealed other recent Asian exclusives.

Both figures are said to have some colour differences to their JP or US versions.
The release date is December 28th. No idea on price at this time.

But Gaia Unicron is a crap toy (I have him so I know)... seems like a waste of a two-pack...

I don't have one, but would love to get my hands on one. I must say the joined version of the two looks extremely odd. What's crap about this unicron though?

Well, the alt mode is frankly a very odd sort of spaceship thingie and the 'armour' mode doesn't work very well. The robot mode is okay, but for some reason has a large Unicron face on its back (which is also on the top of what we shall have to call the vehicle mode), and annoyingly has no hands.

Robot mode for Gaia Unicron scales decently enough with Prime Cyberverse stuff and I guess if you fiddle around with it enough it becomes a mountain. At least it should do, I still can't work it out very well. Thoroughly disappointing!

I guess the robot mode is mainly what I want it for. I agree with everything you said about how cruddy the alt and joined modes look though. Kind of just a mash of things happening in them hah.

Gaia Unicron would look awesome if they did a black version like Energon Unicron (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Unicron/toys#Energon)

Funny you should say that, as there is now a competition toy that is a black/silver Unicron (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=15101).

As for the two-pack... now that it is out (http://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/inpackage-images-takara-tomy-transformers-prime-arms-micron-optimus-prime-gaia-unicron/26444/) (showing off the shiny bits and the pre-built Microns), the bios on the back have been revealed (http://www.allspark.com/content/view/10891/) to explain why Unicron would be merged with Optimus.

Optimus Prime:
The noble leader Optimus Prime began his days as Orion Pax, a mere data clerk in the Iacon Hall of Records. It was his meeting with the gladiator Megatron that would greatly change his destiny, the first step on the path to being bestowed with the Matrix and recognized as a great leader. Adopting the motto “Freedom is the right of all sentient beings,” Optimus Prime’s battle with Megatron now continues on Earth. He fights to protect the people of Earth while uncovering the mysteries of the planet.

Gaia Unicon:
Legend has it that in days long past, the Chaos God Unicron was sealed away by the first 13 Transformers. As he threatens to awaken, the Earth lies on the verge of chaos and destruction. Iacon records claim that on a world in a distant dimension, civilization was driven to extinction when it attempted to harness Unicron’s energy. Now Earth risks the same dire fate. The mighty avatar Gaia Unicron, born from Dark Energon, is the first harbinger of the chaos bringer’s revival.

Gaia Armor:
Optimus Prime and his Autobots faced impossible odds, yet succeeded in defeating Gaia Unicron, the earthly avatar of the chaos lord Unicron. From its remains, the macrocosmic guardian Leo Prime used his ancient sword to forge the Gaia Armor. Although the purifying power of an Energon Matrix severed the Gaia Armor from Unicron’s control, it still resonates with the forbidden might of Dark Energon, granting its wearer unspeakable power.
Should Optimus Prime choose to don the armor, he must heed Leo Prime’s warning and treat it with great caution: constant vigilance is required to control the armor without being corrupted by its power. Were the Gaia Armor to fall into the hands of the Decepticon tyrant Megatron, the consequences would surely mean destruction for the already outnumbered Autobots. Whether to be used for good or evil, the Gaia Armor brings a new dimension to the battles of Team Prime.

Interesting that the Mini-cons come pre-assembled.

I think it's because this is a Hasbro Asia release and not a JP TakaraTomy release, so didn't want people fussing around with building models... so it is more surprising to see that it they included the Microns at all (being a Hasbro release - it even says "Transformers Prime" on the packaging instead of Arms Micron).

Strange how Optimus' Micron is a mini-Shockwave?

I ended up getting AM 19 Gaia Unicron. I love the robot mode, he looks great like that. But the armor and what ever the alt mode is, is just ... Regardless, he looks great on display as a robot imo :D
