Name your 3 best and 3 worst Transformers memories of 2012.

For me...

-==Highlights==-

Osaka Fan Meet in January
My first time back to Japan in many years, and my first time ever to Osaka. Got to meet up with some Japanese fans and Ode To A Grasshopper. Spent the whole day roaming around Umeda and Den Den Town Transformers hunting and talking about Transformers in Japanese. :D Scored some pretty cheap deals thanks to group haggling at Hero Gangu, and I scored a free MISB United Frumble! Definitely one of the most memorable meets I've ever attended. :)

Meeting Transformers Voice Actors
Got to meet Miki Shinichirō (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Shinichir%C5%8D_Miki) at Smash!, and Garry Chalk (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Garry_Chalk) and Steve Blum (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Steve_Blum) at Heroes and Villains, and naturally got autographs. Also finally got to meet OzFormer and epic TF Cosplayer Seishinkibou. :)

Fall of Cybertron
Really enjoy playing this game! Probably enjoying too much as I've gained some weight since I started playing it. :p

-==Lowlights==-

Seeing Hasbro drop the ball with Dark of the Moon
Lucky for me I managed to get Dotm Deluxe Quejack, Leadfoot and Soundwave from Japan... but I can't believe Hasbro didn't take these already-existing moulds and release it for their market... instead choosing to give us more repaints of existing moulds. :( And neither Hasbro or TakaraTOMY bothered to give us a decent Dino/Mirage figure... only the crappy Legion Class repaint/retool of Legends ROTF Sideways. Boo. :(
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/th_leadfoot_lightpipe2.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/th_soundwave_tapas.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/th_prime_optimusprime_parra.jpg

Hasbro Australia not releasing TF Prime First Edition
...although according to at least Hasbro rep I spoke with, it was because none of the retailers showed interest in ordering this line, but Hasbro AU were willing to release it if they had orders. Either way, the Australian market missed out. :( I managed to get mine from Hong Kong and Japan as I suspected that they wouldn't come out here... times like this I hate being right. :(

No player mute function on Fall of Cybertron, PS3 version
The one thing that occasionally ruined the game for me -- talkers! Gah!! I just now refuse to play any games where there's someone talking into their mic.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/th_ps3foc_meme.jpg

---------------------------------------------------------------------
There have been a lot of other memorable moments, from the awesome fun of the Parramatta Barbecue/Picnic, to the frustrating disappointment of the Arms Micron toys with their stickers and craptastic Mini-Cons. But those would be my top and bottom 3.

Heh! I've been reading your comments over the last few months about your annoyance with the idiots that crap on into their mikes in FOC multiplayer - why am I not surprised this is a lowlight for you :)

My 3 Highlights:

1: Fall of Cybertron Game & Merchandice :D

A wonderful game, with an absolutely brilliant storyline which pays a lot of homage to G1. Great toys with a wide range of G1 characters in their Cybertronian forms, posters, shirts and getting the art book delivered within the next week!

2: G1 Fortress Maximus & Scorponok :D:D

After so many years I FINALLY bought a 100% complete G1 Fortress Maximus and G1 Scorponok. Both cost me an absolute fortune, but was happy to get them.

3: TBA within the next week :D:D;):D

My 3 Lowlights

1: The 3 idiot women from messing with my collection.
Came to my house, took all my busts and statuettes off the shelves and put them in stupid postions - the result being that my Soundblaster statuette got damaged as well as 3 friendships. :( :(

2: Stocking of TF's in Swan Hill stores
The only places you can by Transformers in my town are in Toyworld, Target, and the tiny toys sections in Coles & Safeways. Last year these stores seemed to not do too badly (except Toyworld here - it has always sucked, they still have ROTF toys on the shelves) but this year they hardly ever get anything new in and I don't get to Melbourne anymore to do a shop. But then that's what online shopping is for I guess ;)

3: Re-release of Fortress Maximus
I know it is very sour grapes on my part, but for so many years I wanted Fort Max, then I FINALLY buy him, then a few months later it's announced he is getting re-released for about a quarter of what I paid for him. Damn & blast!

Highlights:

- Fall of Cybertron game
- G1 Fort Max (for those who now have an opportunity to get him)
- MP Soundwave
- Hasbro MP-10
- Lots of 3rd party goodness like Giant, Cyclops, Assaulter, Grind Rod, Screecher, etc.

Lowlights

- Most of Hasbro's/Tomy's stuff don't interest me at all (Prime line).
- The official mainstream stuff that did have some interest was mostly mediocre at best (FOC toys). FOC Bruticus was even more mediocre than I had feared.
- Still no 3rd party Presser, Hexatron, and FP Stunticons. The former too are almost vapor ware :(

3 highlights

1) Announcement and preorder placed for figures to be released that I like.

- Fort Max (yaay), MP Soundwave (yaaay)

2) Finally upgrading my collection room display shelves :D:D

http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb313/liegeprime/Collection%20room%202012/DSC02175.jpg

3) TF and TF-related Purchases Ive made and was able to complete (certain collectives, groups, subgroup etc) - as simple as this may sound, I find it quite satisfying to finally complete a series or a set of figures, don't you?

- Marvel TF comics TPB
hmmm I need to take a photo of this actually :p:D
- TF Generations books
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb313/liegeprime/2012%20acquisitions/DSC02372.jpg
- BW mutants

Third Party stuff :D

Giant
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb313/liegeprime/2012%20acquisitions/DSC02052.jpg
Letterbots and Alphabet bots- I have always wanted to have em since I was in grade school but the originals back then were too pricy for a grade 6 student :D
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb313/liegeprime/2012%20acquisitions/DSC02248.jpg

Lowlights

1) Delays in FortMax and Soundwave release dates
2) Still unable to find an affordable Overlord
3) TF toy release here in Australia sucks... we are sooooo delayed and we skip waves :(:(:mad::mad: I know this is a rather constant thing happening here but man, overseas already has wave whatsoever and we are stuck still with wave 1 with tons of Bumblebees.

Highlights:
1) Joining this forum and meeting some excellent people:)
2) Sheer numbers of TFs that I have acquired this year
3) The direction the 3rd party movement has taken by releasing some of the most awesome TF related toys available. (Green Giant, I'm looking at you).

Lowlights:
1) Fall of Cybertron. After WFC I expected great things from Escalation. It did not deliver them.
2) Quality/Availability of Official TFs in Australia. The only lines that interest me atm are MP and Generations. While the MP line delivered this year, Generations was a bit of a letdown. The best figure IMO was Shockwave. And he was by no means fantastic.
3) the space I have for TFs is pretty much non-existent, so where am I gonna put them!!!??!!?!?!?:(

High:
Getting my reissue Soundwave
Fall of Cybertron
Ace seeker pack
Low:
Not able to find Mp Optimus yet (hope I will soon)
Foc Combaticons
Availability- we don't get much, although normally it's all in one or two stores only. Disappointing.

HIGHS:
1. Transformers comics (esp MTMTE).
2. TF:Prime cartoon. Very enjoyable and keeps me coming back for more. FE TF:P Optimus was my toy of the year.
3. The Community. Without OzFormers, Botch, TFW2005, Sibertron, and a myrid others, I doubt I would enjoy the concept of collecting TFs as much as I do.

LOWS:
1. Limited range and releases of certain toys/lines/waves in Aust. This includes TF:P First Edition line not being picked up.
2. Crap DOTM toys. (And yet I am still chasing Air Raid. Which also covers point 1 as well...)
3. The price of some figures still bugs me a bit. Especially given the somewhat decreased levels of QC and plastics.

Hmm... I should have qualified that by "2012" I meant things that have actually "occured" in 2012 and not stuff like announcements or pre-orders/purchases for stuff that will come out in 2013 (like MP Soundwave and Encore Fort Max). Ah well, the Catilla's already out of the Pretender Shell now I guess. :p

+1.
News/announcement that occurred this year could be a highlight. News of a FOC voyager Grimlock figure was certainly a highlight of mine for the year.

Yeah, for me I personally don't consider news/announcements of stuff to be "highlights", cos it sorta feels like counting my chickens before they hatch. As far as I'm concerned, a toy doesn't officially "exist" for me until someone has sighted/acquired it at a store. So for me, stuff like MP Soundwave and Encore Fort Max are things that I'm looking forward to experiencing in 2013, but I don't consider them as 2012 experiences - even the announcements (much like say the live action TF movie was a highlight of 2007, even though I first heard the announcement in 2003).
^just my personal subjective opinion :p

Anyway, I neglected to specify what kind of 'experiences' I wanted to discuss, so I'm not going to bother imposing any specifications now. So if folks wanna include announcements as part of their highlights, then so be it. :)

Highs:

1) Third party invasion, so much cool Third party toy were released, and all to a reasonable standard of quality that starts to make Hasbro look bad.

2) Transformers More than Meets the Eye comic, the best TF comic in ages, and one I can actually recommend to non TF comic fans.

3) MP Lambor, the only entirely new TF mold for 2012 that did anything for me. Toys r Us MP10 and Powerdive were good too, but they are both effectively repaints from previous years toys.

1) Broken Powerdive, getting a relatively rare toy from overseas broken in box, sucks.

2) Decline of Hasbro toy quality, toys getting smaller, less paint apps, less articulation all for the same more expensive than America prices.

3) FOC Bruticus, mostly for Hasbro's blundering with the paint job, but also the mold was disappointing, coupled with reason 2 makes this number 3 on the list.

I think that an announcement of a much desired figure/reissue qualifies as a 'high' as it can command every bit as much excitement (sometimes more) than the toy itself.

Not for me. Am I excited about the announcement of Encore Fortress Maximus? You bet your asteroid. But I can tell you now that actually having the toy will be, for me, a gazillion times more exhilarating than the announcement itself. :D This is entirely my own personal subjective standard, and I've no intention of imposing it on anyone else now. :)

^ You're wrong (sorry, couldn't help myself :D)

Anyway... my highlights for this year would include -

The Sydney Ozformers Xmas BBQ
And... that's about it. Sad huh?!

I haven't really bought anything of note, TF:Prime doesn't float my boat, and I'm still yet to play FOC.

Disappointments include -

Lack of Transformers available at local retail
Quality of Transformers available at local retail
TF:Prime although I will admit it's growing on me since watching the last couple of eps (haven't finished season 2 yet :o)
FOC Bruticus (BIG disappointment considering how pumped I was when I saw the initial pics)

If I were to include announcements in my 'highs' for this year, Fort Max and MP Soundwave would definitely feature and I have both on preorder

Here are mine

1. Getting back into collecting after not buying anything for a few years. Joining this board and trying to finish my G1 collection (no micromasters or action masters

2. Getting into Japanese G1 exclusives

3. Getting all this in one year

(I have a Zone Metrotitan, Sonic Bomber and Greatshot already paid for but i may not get them until the new year)

Low lights

1. Expensive of collecting G1
2. Selling all my non-G1 stuff (masterpieces/other toys) to fund G1
3. Possible future G1 reissues (very selfish of me, but may have meant I could get vintage ones cheaper)

Highlights
1. Going to the home of Transformers, Japan. (I will be going back)
2. Getting MIB Star Saber and Victory Leo after selling my older ones 18 months earlier (wee bit of a mistake)
3. Wife getting preggers with a little G2 :D

Lowlights
None :) Life is just that good

Highlights:
1. Actually getting a few of my Holy Grails.
2. Rejoining the Transformers community mainly through Ozformers and dA.
3. Announcement of TF4, 5 & 6.

Lowlights:
1. Missing out on getting some Holy Grails (mainly through bad timing on my part).
2. Transformers online community has changed. A lot of friendships are not active anymore for various reasons.
3. Announcement of TF4, 5 & 6.

3. Possible future G1 reissues (very selfish of me, but may have meant I could get vintage ones cheaper)
It's the opposite for me - my reissues cost me more than my originals. Also I like to keep both my original G1s and reissues; typically with the reissue in robot mode and the original in alt mode. :) I've already cleared shelf space to display my original Fortress Maximus in battleship mode (my Brave Maximus is displayed in city mode), as I intend to display the reissue in robot mode. I love reissues - keep 'em coming! :D

+
1. Back into collecting again, which isn't too bad.
2. Announcement of MP Soundwave and Encore Fortmax, along with reissue of US Ultra Magnus (which I hear has short missile and long stacks, wew).
3. Figuring what I want for a collection of Transformers

-
1. Spending and reselling a huge amount of classics/stuff because I couldn't reign in my spending.
2. Money spent/lost on things I should've been more patient about
3. Couldn't entirely kick the habit, though it's probably been a bit curtailed and that's fine.

I seriously dislike re-issues. I saw my Predaking go from an easy $500 to, well, now one just sold for less than $160 and that was a mostly die cast version!!:mad:
While the Takara one with the sexy handle is nice it's a bummer how it changed the value of the originals. And I agree with you Gok, most of the time the re-issues cost more !!! WTH!!
No one is to blame but collectors and some scumbags who try and sell re-issues/fakes as originals. Also now when buying original G1 it has become more of a cat and mouse game for accessories and it bugs me somewhat how someone can say "Oh I have 150 G1 Transformers" and then you look at them and a large chunk are re-issues!!!
End Rant :p Probably should have put words in capitals as the rant went on hehe.

P.S. Loving the Lovefest Shape :D

As far as I can see, reissues are a win-win situation for fan/collectors - it gives people a cheap and legitimate means of getting a G1 toy that's in new minty condition (imagine a reissue Monstructor or Pyro that you could buy cheap without fear of it crumbling from GPS), and anyone trying to buy vintage toys off the secondary market will find it getting a bit cheaper. Every fan's a winner.

The only people who would be "disadvantaged" would be sellers, but it just means that their profit margin is reduced... they're STILL going to sell that toy well above its original price! Besides, reissues are always announced many months before their release dates -- the smart thing to do as a seller if you wanted to maximise the sale price of a vintage toy is to sell ASAP _before_ the reissue comes out, or sit on the toy for 5-10 years until the reissue is in less supply and try again.

While the Takara one with the sexy handle is nice it's a bummer how it changed the value of the originals.
I don't see how the aftermarket price of a toy would affect its inherent/intrinsic value at all. Consider the following...

* Laser Optimus Prime: one of the best Optimus Prime toys ever made IMHO, just love it. You can buy one now MISB on eBay for $129, which doesn't seem that high considering this toy came out in 1995 -- the reissue is likely to be keeping the aftermarket price of this figure down, especially considering that it's arguably better looking than the original. But that doesn't affect my opinion of this toy -- I still love it, whether this toy sells for $300 or $30.

* G1 Monster Pretenders: I bought these toys MOSC from Kmart for however much they were selling for at retail... a few dollars each. I don't hate the Monster Pretenders per se - but they're not my favourite toys, and if anything, the GPS on Slog and Bristleback has actually made me like these toys less now because I can't play with them no more. :( But the cheapest set of MOSC Monster Pretenders I can see on eBay atm is selling for US$899. This hasn't made me like my Monster Pretenders more than before.

And I agree with you Gok, most of the time the re-issues cost more !!! WTH!!
No one is to blame but collectors and some scumbags who try and sell re-issues/fakes as originals.
I think it's mostly due to inflation. I think the average price of most reissues is actually reasonable -- it's just that I bought my originals in the 1980s and 90s, a time when my Transformers comics cost me $1-2 an issue and petrol was 32c/L, whereas reissues today cost more in a time where my TF comics cost about $5-6 an issue and I'm lucky if I can pay $1.23/L for fuel. :o My original G1 Constructicons cost $8-9 each MOSC, so the whole set cost about $50. Encore Devastator retailed for a whopping 10500JPY ($120) - so more than _double_ what the originals cost. But to be honest, I think the inflationary prices of most reissues has been pretty reasonable. Reissue Hot Rod sold for 2500JPY ($29), and the Hasbro version sold at TRU here for $25, which is about nearly the same as what the original Hot Rod toy sold for in 1986.

and it bugs me somewhat how someone can say "Oh I have 150 G1 Transformers" and then you look at them and a large chunk are re-issues!!!
I count reissues as G1s (although the majority of my G1s are originals), but yeah, I know what you mean. :)

kup
13th December 2012, 01:37 AM
I also count re-issues as G1. They are essentially the same toy re-released.

However personally, I would not count an official retooled/repainted G1 mold as a 'reissue'. I see it as a new toy.

For example, I would not count the latest 'golden' Predaking set as a re-issue. The G1 toy did not look like that. However I would count the prior Takara Predaking reissue with the G1 faithful colors.

The same goes for that new Ehobby repaint of Encore Devastator with the new head. To me, that is a retool/repaint and would not consider it as a reissue or part of my G1 collection because 1985 Devastator never looked like that.

There is nothing wrong with retools/repaints and if done well enough I will buy it and proudly display it in my collection but would not count as part of my US G1 collection.

I seriously dislike re-issues. I saw my Predaking go from an easy $500 to, well, now one just sold for less than $160 and that was a mostly die cast version!!:mad:

It's been said a million times already, but toy collecting in general is a bad investment idea.

and it bugs me somewhat how someone can say "Oh I have 150 G1 Transformers" and then you look at them and a large chunk are re-issues!!!

That's an interesting point and would make a great discussion on it's own ;) :)

1. Significant collecting progress made on the TF JR line
2. Several unique G1 Takara non toy purchases
3. Viewed many cool collection photos.
4. Taking a break from TF Collecting/searching for 3 months

1. My faith in TF Collectors/fans is at an all time low.
2. TF4 - same haters, same complaints
3. More G1 reissues. Enough already.

I am currently in my third year of consistently chasing up on TFs - mainly Classicsverse and Beast Wars. Previously I was more ad-hoc.

1. How much have you spent on Transformers this year?
2. How many Transformers toys have you acquired this year?
3. What was the cheapest and most expensive single TF toy you purchased this year?

For me...
1. About $800
2. Approx. 150 toys
3. Cheapest = $5 (Cyberverse Legion Class Vehicon MOSC), Dearest = $175 (MISB MP Sunstorm)

I don't mind Brave Max, spewing I didn't pick him up years ago when he would commonly go for $200 :( (Korean Version I think) Thats when I thought he was sacrilegious. Oh well, live and learn :)
If I got them together I reckon GM would be in a temp controlled room and BM on display.

When it comes to official toys, probably no more than $200 and a bit over $100 of that is Hasbro's MP Prime.

i agree with Starscream77 must be some good wheelin and dealin thats around $4.10 a figure

This is easy for me as it's probably been my driest year on record in terms of acquisitions and spending...

1. How much have you spent on Transformers this year? Not counting my pre-orders for MP Soundwave and Encore Fort Max (which technically would be this year because I've already paid for them but whatever) I would say between $150 and $200.
2. How many Transformers toys have you acquired this year? Approx. 5
3. What was the cheapest and most expensive single TF toy you purchased this year? Cheapest would've been TF:Prime Cyberverse Prime and Megs for $17 apiece; most expensive would've been G1 Sludge (including his box, accessories, and instructions).

If I add MP Soundwave and Encore Fort Max to the above spending total, it would be closer to $800, way down on previous years.

It was an estimated approx. 150 toys for approx. $800 -- so that's an approximate average of $5.33 a toy. Again, all approximations, but I've been mostly buying carded toys this year (including Cyberverse and BotShots). I've also been able to acquire a lot of my acquisitions this years during sales periods because I find that the quality of TF toys is become less and less worth paying full RRP for. Other things that would affect the statistical average would include my haul from Japan, where I scored some bloody awesome bargains. I also scored a couple of toys for free this year, like United Frenzy/Rumble, 2 DotM Deluxes, and the toys that I won from Hasbro's prize pack - so of course these toys count in the number of toys I've acquired for this year, but they don't contribute to how much I've spent since I got them for free.

Yeah, there are a couple of toys that I've already paid for but I haven't counted it because I won't be getting them until 2013, this also includes United Artfire which is already out, but I haven't received mine yet -- I don't think I will until next month anyway. But if by chance I do get it within December I'll adjust my stats. :p

Then realised he'd been here before, and worse, I had been introduced to him.

Very embarrassing.

Sorry Cam!!!

*In my defence, the first deal didn't involve me. I was just 'there', as the ex didn't know if it was the right Prime figure or not.
