View Full Version : Fansproject Function X

Fansproject have released a teaser for what I presume is an upcoming set of figures. Speculation is ranging from not-Stunticons to not-Headmasters to not-Technobots. There is a suggestion that they're a combiner set, although like the current FOC Combaticons, there doesn't seem to be one bigger than the others.

Here's the teaser...

Of course it may be something that's already been announced that I've missed, and I'm certain there are many among our community more savvy at this kind of guessing game than me. Take it away folks!

Someone give gdmetro a cookie!:D

I'm wondering in that case whether they do combine - the original post reads "Function X - f[x] = combin (f9,J12)". My guess is no. Also wondering about scale - hope they're at least voyager sized.

The coloured bars give them away as Headmasters. Chromedome, Brainstorm, Mindwipe,Hardhead, and Skull Cruncher.

I hope they do Chromedomes comic/toon head. Though I suspect they wont.

Definitely the not-Headmasters according to Lord_Zed's comment with kup's amendment. TFormers.com (http://tformers.com/transformers-fansproject-announce-function-x-ultimate/19051/news.html) also speculated on not-Computron -- probably because of the head to body ratio makes the 5 look like Causality-sized toys(?). However since FOC Combaticons, I prefer not a combiner team of 5 to be entirely made of the same size scale.

Also, Toyworld's doing not-Hardhead (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.501954256499183.129885.342554195772524&type=1). Did FP and TW have a friendship going on? Hopefully FP or another third party group of the same calibre picks up not-Highbrow, otherwise I've still got RTS Highbrow as the out of character stand in :p

I dig it :) But Skullcruncher was my only Headmaster from childhood, so I really want one in its original colours -- especially that crazy magenta.

The body looks more like Weirdwolf the colour bar is of though. Hopefully you are right as there is less crossover other than that overpriced Botcon toy.

I'd prefer Snapdragon, but ditto pretty much. Maybe they will save them for when they finish the missing geewun triple changers.

BBTS have the first Function X figure up for pre order (http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=fpj10030&mode=retail), but only until December 16th. The below is from the product page:

FansProject and BigBadToyStore are teaming up to help out needy children this holiday season! FansProject and BigBadToyStore will be donating $20 (wholesale cost) worth of toys to the Toys for Tots organization for every piece of the Function X-1 figure preordered by December 16th. We'll gather up the huge donation on December 17th and deliver it to Toys for Tots and we'll post images shortly after that.

This figure is a four wheeled vehicle that converts to robot mode and it features two scoped rifles - that is all we can tell you for now!

Preorder now and help us make Christmas memorable for many needy children.

Speculation on TFW seems to say that the figure will be not-Chromedome and will be a January release.

Anyone else would have a hard time convincing me to buy a TF sight unseen, but FP have a good record so I threw down my pre order.

I hardly think that this is going to be the only release of this character, but its for a decent cause, so they can have my money early. Also, depending on the timing of the second run, it may see a price rise.

kup

SuspectimusPrime
14th December 2012, 12:50 AM
Thanks Trent! :)

Pre-ordered, I was expecting to pay another $30ish for one of these (about the same price point as Steel Core), so this was just perfect! The donation to kids is a nice extra, considering that $20 on toys goes much further than here.

I trust FP to give me something good even if it's not exactly what I expected.

I think we are safe and my motivation for committing to the pre-order was the charity.

I honestly cannot picture Hasbro or Tomy giving away $20/$68 of a sale to charity. What would the share holders say?

I won't say it's perfect as I am not really blown away by it and have issues with how the robot head sculpt turned out. The choice of white instead of grey and red instead of orange for the face plate is also not to my liking. Still, it is a good Chromedome representation and I like the character so I don't regret buying it and chances are that it will be better in person like a lot of FP stuff.

Lord_Zed
25th December 2012, 02:49 PM
I like these news pics a lot better than the ones previously shown. He is true to the art that was shown way back, so I can't complain to much.

I will say the toy suffers majorly for being a Headmaster, however it's an affliction which can only really be cured by either not being a Headmaster, or being a frigging gigantic toy so I wont hold that against FP.

My main gripe is why didn't they use that same yellow orange paint on Stylor on Chromedomes faceplate! I know I can fix this, but why???

I friggin love the altmode though, love the little controls for Stylor to drive his body around.

Overall I think it's growing on me though, bring on a Headmaster Con now please.

Yeah I like that feature too but unfortunately this new deluxe size figure doesn't have it. I understand why they omitted it because at this scale, it would be difficult to incorporate it without compromising the figure further. The original G1 Headmasters pulled it off because they were much bigger.

Lord_Zed
28th December 2012, 03:47 PM
I wont really miss that tech spec gimmick to be honest, as funky as it may have been it was completely pointless, and doesn't actually make much sense.

Video review by TJ Duckett for not-Chromedome is out via TFormers.com (http://tformers.com/transformers-fansproject-function-x-1-code/19181/news.html).

Really like how the Headmaster's cockpit cavity is used up during transformation into robot mode, rather than being left as a cavity such as in the original G1-ers or in Steel Core :)

kup
13th January 2013, 12:59 PM
Had a little play last night transforming FX-1 Code back and forth. Code is certainly much better than the initial pictures (and complaints) let on. The only real design flaw that I can identify is the shoulder which could have been easily crafted to have more range sideways or a proper ball joint on the ankles for feet articulation. However none of these problems are fundamental to the figure or 'ruins' it in any way, at least as far as my opinion is concerned.

I think that the biggest shock here to most people has been the aesthetic departure from the more 'animeish' FP designs we have gotten in the past to a more '2006 Classics/G1' style aesthetics. If this was a more anime/IDW Chromedome, I am pretty sure that shoulder range complaint would not be so focused upon although it is justified.

Once you let the shoulder articulation and lack of ankle joints issue slide, you will find that Code is actually a pretty nicely designed figure. The overall design takes basic elements from G1 Chromedome and expands on it with some innovative engineering. I particularly enjoy how the back car wheels are completely hidden in the chest and how the car bonnet slides on two connecting rails to become the front of the car - That blew me away and it was fun. The transformation is also highly effective and intuitive, it was complex enough to satisfy but streamlined enough for it to be very easy to transform back and forth. I never had to use the instructions and just allowed the engineering itself to guide me into the car mode.

It is certainly worth every dollar IMO and the charity part only adds to how good this toy is. Yeah it could be better as it has two 'poorly' thought out engineering elements and the retro style aesthetics chosen are not for everyone but even with those things, Code is still a fantastic toy.

Lord_Zed
13th January 2013, 06:55 PM
Kup pretty much summed up my thoughts on Code. Undoubtably the best feature of the toy in my mind is the transformation, it's clever and fun. And the car mode looks awesome.

Third parties now tend to re-stock toys if there is enough demand for them. Maybe wait a little while. The unfortunate thing is that some of the Online stores tend to mark up their prices too but nothing like EBay.

I really like it. Some of the engineering is reminiscent of the original Transformers (the single-joint shoulder transformation, for instance), but there are a bunch of clever twists. I particularly like the way the hood slides over multipart channels - I speculated on using such a device to allow kitbashing of the Sector 70 mascot a while back, but I never thought I'd see it in a commercial product.

I guess we know another company is doing a (not) Hardhead so that one is covered... is any 3rd party company doing a (not) Mindwipe?

Also there's a note there somewhere of Gestalt(?) possibilities for these function X figures - anybody who owns 1 already, can you guys please verify if there is an instruction of sorts leading to that possible ability?

Function X-02 - Quadruple U (http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=FPJ10032&mode=retail)
Function X-03 - Smart Robin (http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=FPJ10033&mode=retail)

can anyone explain to me, why RK don't have any of these up for preorder and also MMC's Predacons? I don't usually order from BBTS/TFS due to high shipping but now I have to cause I've still yet to see preorders on RK

Yeah I am not sure what is going on either. Rumor has it that dirty capitalist practices are taking place and some of the larger US stores are making 'exclusive' deals with 3rd party companies. Yeah works for US people but it screws everyone else up.

While this certainly seems to be what is happening, I remember reading on TFW that FP and RK had a lovers tiff, something to do with RK's business practices. Hence no more fansproject stuff from RK.

FP being annoyed at RK is one thing but making exclusive deals with certain stores is another. For short term gain you end up limiting exposure of your merchandise and pissing off people in the process.

As you said, it's bad enough that FP is tiffed at RK but this 'exclusive' nonsense going around is annoying as hell if it turns out that way.

I heard somewhere that it is due to the fact that RK blatantly sold Kos of FP. But this could merely be one factor apart from the business practices of RK and the "exclusive deals" to US retailers- if true.

Its definitely annoying since RK was my go to option for this stuff as shipping and pricing were cheaper than US- I've now had to resort to BBTS. Cant find a reliable alternate retailer that is based in HK or asian region for these 3rd party items.

Sounds like RK really needs to clean up their act and make up to FP. I personally prefer RK as I've been pretty happy with their service and shipping cost, but have switched to BBTS for all my latest purchases from buying more FP/other third party stuff and POL makes sense.

I wonder where do HK fans get their FP fix? Must be annoying if they suddenly have to import from BBTS/TFS (like us). Or is there another source we have yet to find out? Also, is there a local reseller for Japan's domestic market?

TF-source has opened some more pre-orders up for X1 function if you missed it. About $100 w/ shipping to oz. Thats about 1/2 price of ebay prices atm. Apparently its out february.

Chimungmung (http://chimungmung.com/index.php?cPath=30_39&osCsid=d32bb953e480bf37612010e5abdd687d) has most FP items. However they are pricey compared to others. X1 is $120US, SteelCore is $140US.

I just use BBTS and use the POL.

I'm using them for Toyworld Aurora as they've got the best price and pretty good service ($55, as opposed to BBTS' $70), with FP I've got them POL'ed. On that note, Aurora was due for 2 weeks ago, but Tony has mentioned that it's been delayed until early Feb.

Took a look at the cost of picking up Function-X Chromedome on eBay. I almost can't believe what price he's going for. $140. It boggles my mind. My mind is boggled.
And I'm kinda sad cuz I want one!

An awesome tribute to G1 Weirdwolf and like X1 Code, he has great and innovative Engineering in his transformation. However he also suffers from similar flaws, specially in the somewhat restricted thigh and shoulder articulation. Although the range of motion is greater here.

Yeah, while the wold mode lacks great articulation, the body shape is awesome, it actually has a canine shape as opposed to a humanoid lying down.
