View Full Version : Hasbro Masterpiece Acid Storm mid-2013

As mentioned in the Hasbro MP Soundwave topic (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=15357) (which is now confirmed to be coming out in mid-2013), I asked ToysRUs if any more Masterpiece toys are in their system, hoping it was Sideswipe.... but no, a different Masterpiece toy by Hasbro is coming to ToysRUs at the same time as Soundwave.....

Acid Storm.
A green Starscream redeco, to add to the Masterpiece seeker squadron.

Priced at AU$100, it is $20 more than Thundercracker... so could have a similar price increase in America.

Considering how many Masterpiece toys are coming out of Japan at the moment, I was not expecting Hasbro to release one that Japan hasn't done (yet).
Acid Storm was a classic-verse toy/character that didn't get released in Japan either, so maybe this MP toy is a Hasbro exclusive as well.

(it is worth noting that MP Optimus and Thundercracker are indeed discontinued items in the Australian TRU system - which means stores are not getting any more)

Pushing it a bit. Sunstorm was already a bit of a tough sell but Acid Storm is guaranteed to shelf warm.

I REALLY hope they didn't order in too much of Acid Storm, and a lot of Soundwaves.
Thundercracker didn't move too quickly, and that was a show character. (fortunately it did end up selling out just about everywhere within just 3 months)
Acid Storm won't have anything "selling it" other than it being a green Starscream.
And the price increase will shave off a percentage of collectors who would have been willing to pay Thundercracker's $80 price.

MP-3 Starscream was green tho.

Not intentionally as a green character though... it was still Starscream, just in model plastic green.

This. I would prefer they did a different head sculpt, painted it purple and called it Slipstream.

Since it's not Starscream I won't be getting this one, but I hope it doesn't shelf warm and weaken the MP line.

So I could say now that I probably won't buy this, but come release time, if stocks are limited and everyone here is hyped about it, I'll probably just grab it. :p

Since it'll be the new version, it might be an intersting piece that should be easy to pick up. Then I can finally compare MP Skywarp with the newer version and see the differences for myself.

Just hope it is more of a green than Camo paint job.

VERY unexpected! It comes second in priority to obtaining Soundwave, but it will be pretty hard to walk past if sighted.

Acid storm should be popular... some people may think he will shelf warm, but just wait when they are out and the hype is there they will sell like hotcakes. But still it depends on the deco. It also might convince some more people to buy the exclusive Sunstorm, who could stand in as a rainmaker :D masterpiece rainmakers here we come!!

Whoa! - Completely unexpected but not unwanted, that's for sure!

I'll definitely try & grab an Acidstorm as the bloke has been getting plenty of love lately & I love F-15 Eagle Fighter Jets, one would look awesome in Acidstorm's forest camo paint scheme! ;)

Excitement level is low, I don't understand why they make obscure repaint characters, collecting all the standard repaint characters is a big enough ask I think. Still if they give it a good paint job and Toys R Us issue a $20 off voucher then maybe.

I think camo could look good as silly as it is. I hope they don't give it a gradient though, because I think that looks tacky on the current MP Sunstorm.

Exactly my thoughts dude, something akin (Or a little better) to the Classicsverse figure would be sweet IMO. :)

30th January 2013, 08:41 PM
@waxpython - well.... they've yet to do the conehead seekers!

but at least they're doing it with autobots too now, sideswipe, red alert, tigertrack, sunstreaker? and then prowl, smokescreen and bluestreak

and the reason why? a new guy took over the MP designing role and decided he wanted to enforce scale a better design and accessories which made the toy more of a "Masterpiece"

which was why MP-10 had roller included and then spike but unfortunately Huffer couldn't be budgeted in.

MP-11 got the coronation set

MP-12 got shoulder missile, piledrivers

MP-13 storage for 3 cassettes and eject function, energon cube, display panel on the chest and hand scanner.

MP-14 head sparks

so yeah, I have MP-03 & 04 and am of the opinion that MP-10 & 11 are better than their originals.

but yes, the amount of money poured into collecting this line is pretty steep. but no, they don't expect you to buy each and every seeker but they probably want you to.

That's iGear's not-"Acid Storm". You can tell because it's the old seeker mould, but with the leg mod already done.

Further source: old TFW2005 posting (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/3rd-party-unlicensed-41/igear-acid-storm-rainforest-generation-2-ramjet-current-more-images-174036/).

Comparing their not-Starscream and not-Thundercracker to the MP-11 counterparts, the official Acid Storm would probably have better colours.

I wonder why the global fan-sites are so negative and sceptical. Do they get a lot of people posting up fake news?
Or are they just oblivious of anything outside of their sphere of influence...

You'd think that if they took 30 seconds to look at the source of the info (about Acid Storm and Soundwave), they'd see that it is from a well established source of reliable info (here and on TFW2005). Instead, Seibertron has posted it up as a "rumour" and to "take it with a grain of salt", while TFW has quite a few people disputing it as legitimate just because we've had three Japanese Masterpiece toys here, or because they can't believe it is possible that a non-American has obtained the info first.

I rarely post there, but do it to make sure that the fans themselves get the correct info from the beginning... instead of having to fix it up later, being lost hundreds of posts later.

Yeah. Because they do that all the time.

And anyone didn't make this up. We have sources. Both Griffin and Ultra Mackness have emails from them and Griffin's describes the box Soundwave will come in and stating the price of $150, not $80 as you have repeatedly insisted, without sources I might add. There is no reason for anyone not to believe it.

It's not as if they're short of excuses to repaint seekers that they need to turn to doing figures of obscure animation errors.

It's not even like he has an exciting colour scheme.

Exactly Camo green would be pretty cool. The repaint may seem like an expensive repaint, however this is one way Hasbro is getting us to spend more, so that we have less to spend on competitors. If it looks appealing then Im likely to grab one.

Pushing it a bit. Sunstorm was already a bit of a tough sell but Acid Storm is guaranteed to shelf warm.
And Sunstorm DID shelfwarm (ya know, on Amazon's warehouse shelves) and prices were slashed massively soon after the toy was released. I paid full RRP for that toy and I remember seeing the price drop heaps shortly after I got the toy... I was kickin' myself! (but of course great news for people who hadn't already gotten one)

Interesting news. :)

Yeah, but green enough to pass off and be "repurposed" as Acid Storm. I never realised this until someone who'd never seen MP03 before came and visited my TF collection room, pointed at my MP shelf and said, "Oh cool, you have Masterpiece Acid Storm!" (in all sincerity, he wasn't being sarcastic or anything). So yeah... MP03 is Acid Storm in the Gokiverse. :p

I'm actually really keen to pick acid storm up, also might have to chase up a sunstorm
Just checked - it's still in stock on Amazon JP who are trying to flog off their remaining stock at 19% off RRP (so reduced from 13650 to 11000JPY [$141-->$114]). Not sure about other online sellers, but I've heard that they've all reduced their prices too.

Defcon
2nd February 2013, 11:20 AM
Online stores need to make that Sunstorm less than $100 for me to buy it, some have it reduced, but not enough. Acid Storm might shelf warm, but I think they should be ok if they release them in a small quantity just like Thundercracker ;) which I missed. If its a shelfwarmer at least Ill have a chance at buying one.

I liked the way the camo look worked on the classics version of acid storm, ut I wasn't too much of a fan of the Bape Optimus Prime trailer camo. I hope if they do a camo look for this MP then it looks really masterpiece.

That said I am a huge fan of the look of this custom job:

A similar look from the Hasbro version would be great!

I think the bit I liked most about it was the 3-D corrosion effects, but I'm not too hopeful that Hasbro will include that feature. You're probably right about some the paint colours, though reading the description there is glow in the dark paint used (another feature I don't expect Hasbro to follow through :)).

I think what doesn't sit well with me if there is just a camo paint scheme is just that - it's a paint scheme. I feel like the rainmakers should start with a single all over colour like the other seekers that is then affected by their special ability which for Acid-storm would be acid damage to his paint. The customizer maybe didn't hit the right shades of green, but I do like the idea.

I'm partial to "Blizzard Storm". :) Give him a really light blue colour with white accents to differentiate him from Thundercracker. They'd have to do him as a limited exclusive though. A common store release wouldn't bode well for a second blue Seeker.

Sunstorm is dropping in price now -- cheapest one I've found was Amazon JP for $114, but other online stores outside Japan have cut their prices too (RK are selling it for $160 (w/ coin)). Some people seem to be waiting to see if it goes below the $100 mark, which it very well might if it continues to shelfwarm at this rate (which is great news for folks like you :)).
