That concept art was in the Fall of Cybertron art book so it doesn't mean the figure will necessarily look like that (or be a triple changer or that Ultra Broadside is coming!).

But this week is now officially crazy with new figure news.

Cool concept drawing is one thing as it is yet to go through the Hasbro cost cutting mill. I hope it turns out good but I am highly skeptical given their recent efforts.

Like always, if it turns out good I will buy it but if it turns out like the other FOC stuff, then no thanks.

Most likely: single figures at retail but the online stores will sell as a pair. Particularly if the case has two of each. Worse case scenario one is short packed (3-1).

What was wrong with the 'other' FoC toys, I thought most of them were pretty good? So far FoC and MP are the only TF lines I'm interested in.

Combaticons were cheap-looking, Optimus went backwards when compared to the WFC toy, Kickback is a horrendous toy, and Grimlock is 'a shell' of his former self ;) And they’re just the ones I have handled IRL. Shockwave is easily the best in the series but even his alternate mode is a bit of a disappointment.

Interesting to see A voyager Astrotrain. If it's as good as the Classics then it's an easy get for me. I'm with you on Kickback, he looks awesome in photoshop and the pics but, altmode wise its not very playable. It fall apart. Shame.

Minor spoilers for the latest issue of RID, but I was just reading it again and I noticed something. Is this the first appearance of FOC Astrotrain? (http://24.media.tumblr.com/f8dbc9b2160a94c90bdfa05e4e738210/tumblr_mhmsrwu9rl1qbguy1o1_400.jpg) The redesign seems brand new and with others in the series looking like their WFC / FOC / GEN toys it makes me wonder.

Could be but I think maybe not because Springer transforms into the autobot dropship from the game, so i'm thinking Astrotrain will transform into the decepticon dropship from the game which is purple.

I think it's the other way around. Like how Starscream and Bumblebee are drawn based on their WFC/FOC toys. The artist might have advance access to the toys which would have been in process for a while.

Quickstrike
3rd February 2013, 07:54 PM
My theory was Astrotrain would share a mold with an unannounced Broadside. Looking at that comic picture makes me think that it's still a vaguely plausible idea.

When I saw it I figured it was the Classics toy. If that's the new toy, disappointing if they made him in those failed colors rather than the G1/Cartoon inspired ones we saw with Henkei.

5FDP
3rd February 2013, 11:36 PM
Yeah, if he ends up being another white coloured Astrotrain, that would be the deal breaker for me. I wouldn't be surprised at all if that ends up being the case and Takara then comes out with their own cartoon-accurate coloured Astrotrain ala. Henkei. If that happens though, expect to pay the premium prices that go along with it, especially being a Voyager class.

Bidoofdude

Hopefully they don't go by the game/comics (like they do:p) and will see that the grey and purple is much more popular for this character.

Lord_Zed
4th February 2013, 06:16 PM
Yeah, I must admit while I don't like the white and purple Astrotrain as much as the grey one, he has spent many more years being white than grey so arguably his proper colours are white and purple.

Maybe if Hasbro used a nice white rather than a creamy looking white he would look good, and be true to his origins.

Gouki
4th February 2013, 08:39 PM
Well, that's fine, more chance I'll be able snag as Astrotrain if he's white then. I don't mind either way, the gray and purple looks good, but if it's a white white and not cream then I'm down.

Hursticon
4th February 2013, 11:11 PM
Hmm... For me I actually prefer the white, that's the colour scheme I remember from my childhood toy & it's the current look to my '06 Classics figure; Dependant on what Astrotrain ends up looking like though (Please be Cybertronian Steam Loco, PLEASE! :D) - I may pick him up but overall he'd be quite superfluous to my needs. :o

Defender had a good run and who knows, it could be that this new Springer is a response to it. When Defender came out (4 years ago now?), the Hasbro policy for Springer seemed to be just to repaint old Cybertron molds. I remember Archer saying that there was no need for a triple changing Springer because the Botcon 07 toy and the Universe repaint covered all modes

I hope this is a sign that Hasbro is beginning to understand.

In the comments on TFW it was suggested Blitzwing looks like IDW Flywheels ( and that's true (http://25.media.tumblr.com/20420cc194f6ba35af3e5ec31ce2afcf/tumblr_mhzd3jI91t1qbguy1o1_1280.jpg)) so there's a ready to go repaint, which would also suggest that Springer's helicopter/car could also be repainted as Battletrap. That said, I suspect we're more likely to get a Sandstorm repaint and/or a generic 'we need to keep this name trademarked' repaint from them. Not that I'd mind that as long as they did the colour schemes like the Duocons, but if that happens at all I suspect they'd be convention exclusives.

Still, I'm pleasantly surprised by what they're doing now, so fingers crossed.

His 2 Alt modes look truly stunning, in that they've finally been able to take a tank & turn it into a jet - Convincingly, along with very little (If any) carry-over kibble from either mode into the next.:cool:

Oh and Octane didn't convert SP, more like he's status is "refugee". He sought asylum with the autobots coz he's going to get scrapped by Galvatron for using Trypticon for his bid at decepticon leadership. The Decepticon troops during that time has very low morale and loyalty to Galvatron compared to what they've shown to Megatron. Even though it's the same bot, but you know a lot more crazeeee!! :p

Springer is pure GOLD
Springer has always been my favourite Autobot character and after years of puny repaints that have carried the name its a joy to finally see a dedicated bad ass traiple changer. The facts he's a voyager puts him out of scale with the rest of the classics but who cares? The bigger size class has allowed for a really nice toy. Bot mode is fine and the car and helicopter modes are surprisingly convincing. His car mode is actually far better than the G1 cartoon/toy car.

Blitzwing looks great too. Excellent G1 colour scheme and a good tank mode. Again surprisingly the fighter jet mode doesn't look so bad considering the tank kibble thats got to be present.

I'm stoked about these two

Looking at the rear wing and front windows and general shape, it's the same mold, but retooled to have wings instead. The wheel 'turbines' on the wings will no doubt help give a more defined buggy mode that's distinctive to Springers and some extra bulk in robot mode. Almost as clever as what they achieved with Sunstreaker and Sideswipe IMHO.

I think I'm more keen for Blitzwing than Springer, they both look pretty good though I am just a tiny bit concerned Springers legs may look just a little bit to skiny. Though hey, he is Springer.

Scrutinizing the Metroplex, Sandstorm actually looks like he will be a new mold and look more like a plane with wheels on his wings. Conjecture anyway.

But Springer has already received 3 individual figures & Sandstorm has one too  - Why can't Astrotrain receive an updated treatment?

they couldn't figure out a way for him to fit Devastator inside without him going boom!!;)

We're probably not getting Astrotrain, but Blitzwing is WAAY better. Really cool with the interchangeable faces.
Springer is very sleek. I prefer him over the GDO retool.

We already got a Classics Astrotrain anyway, so I totally agree that Hasbro should be focussing on characters who haven't gotten the Classicsverse treatment yet, like Blitzwing and the Autobot Triple Changers. :)

Previous Springers and Sandstorms were repaints though. They've never had 'proper' toys in terms of a purpose-made mould that suited them. Astrotrain had a 'proper' toy that was explicitly made for him. It's similar to how we really needed a Generations Dirge, cos Universe Dirge was just a repaint of Cybertron Voyager Starscream (I got it just as a place holder; when Generations Dirge came out, I offloaded Universe Dirge and Roadbuster). And to me, Orange Beachcomber =/= Sandstorm. Also, he was part of the Hunt for the Decepticon line, which technically places him in the Movieverse. :o

If they released a new mould for Generations Astrotrain, I don't think I'd buy it because I already have Henkei Astrotrain. I'd much rather Hasbro focus on developing new moulds for characters that don't already have them than ones that already do.

I wouldn't mind updated voyager (or tall deluxe) Classic seekers. The 2006 Classics mold is showing a fair bit of age and rather small.

I think I want that to happen, but then I realise it means buying the same toy 6 times all over again - and it was a long PITA process to do that first time around.

i wish springer and blitzwing were deluxe size to fit in with the other classics seeing as astrotrain was deluxe hope its not much bigger than skyfire then i guess it'd be ok.

That's the only problem I have with Springer: he's too big. If he;s as big as FOC Soundwave then he will look out of place ith the rest of my classics bots. Blitzwing I think though would work quite well as a voyager.

Personally, I really don't care about scale. G1 figures were all never in scale with the next fellow anyway heh :p

This is what I'm worried about. FOC Soundwave looks so out of place with his size, so hopefully they'll be smaller. (being Hasbro, of course:p;))
I like Blitzwing and I love the sleekness of Springer, so size is worrying me on Springer.

Not sure about this, I don't really think I want to buy six new repaint/retools again. Also pretty much 90% of the bots in the Decep Classic line are on the small side (compared to the Autobots anyway). If they re-make the seekers then Astrotrain and Octane will look tiny, then they would have to re-make them pretty soon they'll just remake the whole line over. I think it's enough they did that for the MP's. I'd rather see them make more new classic characters, and the seekers are afforded far to much popularity in proportion to their fairly bog standard role as grunts.

Meh... the way things are going lately, today's Voyager is nearly the size of yesteryear's Deluxe. :p Besides, we already have a lot of Mini-Bots in varying scales -- Bumblebee, Cliffjumper and Warpath are Deluxes, Brawn, Beachcomber and Cosmos are Legends, Windcharger's a Scout, and for those who accept TF2010 as part of Classicsverse, Sea Spray's a Voyager! Having a Deluxe Astrotrain and Octane alongside other Triple Changers as Voyagers is the least of my concerns compared to the scale discrepancies amongst the Autobot Mini-Cars!

^I agree. I wouldn't mind them doing Sunstorm and the blue Rainmaker as repaints of the existing Deluxe Seeker mould - but yeah, more new characters please! If I wanted to collect new versions of the same old characters, I'll go to my nearest store and come back with a box load of Bumblebees. :p

It has always been my wish that triple changers be voyager class! In todays deluxe class these would be to small unless they decided to make them a little larger than normal. Its a bit of a disappointment that the original Astrotrain listing was incorrect and instead its Blitzwing. I do want Blitzwing though.

I hope they do an Astrotrain and a Broadside as voyagers! The rumoured Sandstorm will be a welcome addition also.

My thoughts on the matter were mostly motivated by how awesome MMC's Screecher is in robot mode. An updated G1 Starscream at that level would be nice but I guess I am just dreaming.

Screecher's pretty cool looking, but I love the seeker mold SOOO MUCCHHH, it's hard to imagine anything besides arm clearance to work on.

I get where you are coming from, as the classics starscream mold is pretty outdated and simple. Looks good though, just pretty plain and boring. Its a shame they never did voyager seekers in classics. Because most would of loved it. Voyagers did happen in the movieverse and animated, In my opinion they would of served better in classics. Because we have MP Starcream and others, I'd say its already been catered for. Probably a reason for the absense of an updated classicsverse Starcream.

Expect for the 30th Anniversary, new toys for Hasbro's biggest characters... and Starscream would be high up their "checklist of priority characters" because of how profitable the mould would be with redecos.
We've already got new Generations toys coming this year for Optimus, Bumblebee and Megatron... Starscream is like the fourth best-known character. (and you can imagine that next year's anniversary would cash in with a new "Gen1" homage set)

I personally find that, in general, carded toys offer better value for money than boxed toys. Hasbro seems to focus more on gimmicks than engineering with boxed figures such as the Voyager Class. e.g. First Edition Deluxe Megatron vs TFPRiD Voyager Megatron -- I own both of these figures, and the Deluxe toy totally trumps the Voyager in terms of value for money. The Deluxe has a better paint job, lacks that weird looking transparent purple thing, and quite frankly some of the extra engineering they worked into the Voyager tends to be more detracting rather than adding to the toy (like the shoulder pads). Yeah alright, they're both rubbish toys really... but the Voyager is a bigger and much more expensive rubbish toy! I also own FE Deluxe Starscream and I've handled someone else's Voyager TFPRiD Starscream; the Voyager doesn't really substantially add much more value than what the Deluxe already offers, at least, not in any way that justifies what you pay for it. The Deluxe offers much better value for your dollar IMHO. Also, by keeping the Seekers at Deluxe size, they scale better against Megatron who's a Voyager.

Voyagers did happen in the movieverse and animated, In my opinion they would of served better in classics.
TF1 and Animated Voyager Starscream were sucky toys IMO. They did improve with the ROTF Starscream... if you could stand all those alien tattoos (which while canonically accurate, detracts from the "robot in disguise" element). And again, I find that the Deluxe DOTM Seeker mould offers just as good value, but at a cheaper price. I own TF1 Voyager, ROTF Voyager and Deluxe DOTM Starscream (and DOTM Deluxe Skywarp and Thundercracker), and I find the Deluxes just give me the best bang for my buck. I also own Animated Voyager Starscream and Skywarp, and Activator Thundercracker and Dirge --- I find Dirge and Thundercracker to be good toys for what you pay. I find the Voyagers to be rather disappointing for what I paid (well, I got Skywarp cheap, but still -- considering the full Voyager RRP which is what I paid for Starscream)

Carded toys don't cater for in-built electronic gimmicks that I frankly don't care about, so they're more engineering/design driven. The MechTech gimmick on the Deluxes was far more subtle and non-intrusive compared to electronic gimmicks (especially sound gimmicks ) -- carded toys are often much less 'compromised' in their design compared to their boxed counterparts. Give me a toy that's cheaper and relatively better engineered (for its size/price) than a big expensive toy with underwhelmingly lacklustre design.
^JMHO :)

the recent deluxes have been very good.

Jazz, Warpath, Kup, Perceptor, Wreckgar, Scourge, Thrust, Dirge & Thundercracker.

TFPrime deluxes, I don't have all of them so.... yeah but the Generations line is definitely a top tier in terms of well, everything.

At the moment my new love is the Masterpiece line starting from MP-10. I went to play with MP-09 and can't get over how much I hate it and regret buying it. But I absolutely love the designs of Optimus, Sideswipe and Soundwave. It makes me really look forward to Prowl, Bluestreak and Smokescreen.

Recently I bought the Beast Hunters voyagers Prime and Predaking and they were very underwhelming. Also the same for Thundertron. I think the last voyager I absolutely loved were the TFPime 1st edition Bulkhead and Optimus Prime.

But the pictures of the new Springer and Blitzwing have renewed my excitement. They look like they'll really be fun to transform and play with in all modes.

I'd agree with this. Deluxe-sized toys have always been the most fun for me. Getting Titan Class Metroplex for this year is awesome, but to have all the behemoths - Metroplex, Trypticon, Fortress Maximus and Scorponok - in one single line (and thus, one single design continuity) has been a dream in all continuity resets since G1.

Would not mind collecting all 4 as well engineered and well painted Deluxes :) Quite convinced by liege's MyClone line up that this would look awesome :p:D

Yeah, I have FE Bulkhead (TakTOM ver). I find he's a fairly decent Voyager, but I have an issue with mine where one of the joints on the door is really weak and highly prone to falling out. :(
