View Full Version : What other Transformer Crossover figures or toylines could we have?

Personally I’ve never been a massive fan of Cross-over toys. I have always gotten a few token ones from each line so I have examples of them. For me that was Darth Vader & Luke Skywalker from the first wave of Star Wars toys and then Obi-Wan from the later toys, and Venom and the Spiderman/Iron-Man 2-Pack from Marvel. I also got Optimash Prime & Bumblespud as I thought they were kinda cool and have a ton of Kre-O, though it’s technically not a crossover. But overall, even in drought time, I have let the vast majority of Crossover toys pass me by. I always thought that maybe if something a bit cooler or more to my tastes came out, I would buy more of them.
So far we have had the following Crossovers in Transformers:
• Star Wars
• Marvel
• Disney
• Mr Potato Head
• Lego (sort of)
So what else could we have as Transformers Crossover toys? Pretend for a moment that Hasbro has the rights to all this stuff. Here are a few suggestions:
DC Comics: It would be very cool to see the Batmobile turn into Batman (a.k.a The Brave & The Bold but done much better), Lobo into his Jetbike etc. Good luck Getting Wonder Woman to transform into her invisible plane though, and Hal Jordan turning into a giant lantern might look a bit weird. Plastic Man could be a 6-changer though!
Star Trek: Captain Kirk turning into the Original Enterprise, Scotty turning into the Enterprise-A, Sulu into the Excelsior, Sisko into the Defiant etc – would be awesome! Plus lots of enemies such as Klingons turning into Birds-of-Prey and K’tinga class warships, Romulans into Warbirds, Quark into a Ferengi Marauder etc. Tons and tons of characters and ships to choose from!
Other Cartoons: Panthro turning into the Thundertank, Donatello turning into the Turtle-Wagon, Skelletor & He-Man turning into one of the myriad of vehicles that were in MOTU. Again, lots to choose from.
Cool Movie/TV Show Vehicles: Egon turning into Ecto-1, BA Barracus turning into the A-Team van, The Doc turning into the Delorian, Kit from Nightrider having a robot mode etc. Lots of fun!
So what else would you like to see as a Transformers Crossover toy? Feel free to give an individual example, an entire possible toyline, or comment on one of those above. :)

Spongebob Squarepants :o
They have made the Disney crossovers and Gari Gari Kun iceypoles so i imagine Bikini Bottom characters would be something similar.
Also.. GI JOE!
I was never into them but their are plenty in the fandom who want to see GI JOE/TF.

And I would honestly rather not have the robots pretending to be G.I. Joe/COBRA characters... I've never been a huge fan of the concept of making Crossover vehicles look like characters, it's silly and impedes on the design/engineering of the robot mode. In Transformers Energon we had a Transformer called Snow Cat, who transforms into a G.I. Joe Snowcat -- but the robot doesn't try to imitate Frostbite (the driver), it's an entirely new Transformer character with his own look. That's how I'd like G.I. Joe Transformers to be designed... just let designers work out how to transform the vehicles into cool robots and design the robots themselves without imposing constraints on them with having the robots try to look like Joe/Cobra characters.

i would probably have bought some star wars transformers but i think that the fact that they transform into characters from the movies severely limits the robot mode. Should just be a normal transformer that tf's into a star wars vehicle.
star trek would be nice too.

Yeah, I agree. This is why the Star Wars TF's sucked. Why did they have to make them turn into Star Wars characters? I would prefer a true melding of universes rather than just Star Wars toys who happen to be Transformers. Then Megatron could turn into a Star Destroyer and come with a Darth Vader mini figure partner, that would make more sense to me then Darth Vader being a giant robot.
If they did it that way then I would be open to new TF crossovers with Gi Joe and Star Trek suggested earlier.

Well, a transformers crossover has happened that I don't think any of us expected! I was watching Sesame Street with my bub yesterday and they had a bunch of the monster puppets dressed up as robots with just their faces showing. Then they would go "Must Transform! Transform!" in robot voices and then via the power of CGI turn into metal shapes (circles, squares etc) with the faces sticking out. The humor of the piece was that Telly wanted to turn into a hexagon but could manage a triangle at best :)
Can't find it on youtube, but if I do will post it ;)

I just don't like the way Crossover has been handled so far.
Darth Vader's TIE Fighter turning into a crappy version of Vader, no way.
I'd like to see Transformers X Star Wars done again but have a Human Alliance sized figure of the character with an appropriate vehicle that turns into an awesome mech with the HA figure controlling from a cockpit.
Imagine Darth Vader pilots his TIE Fighter and then mid flight is changes to an awesome Bay-former inspired mech.

My Darth Vader & Luke Skywalker toys from the very first wave actually do come with little human figures of the characters that can fly them. The subsequent waves didn't.

Yeah, the mini pilot figurines were cool. But the main problem w/ the Crossovers really had to do with trying to engineer the robot modes to resemble the pilots. That was such a stupid idea. It's so restrictive on engineering and just looks ridiculous. Why should a mecha resemble its pilot??? Macross Valkyries' Battroid modes don't resemble the pilots, the Macross (SDF-1)'s robot mode doesn't resemble Captain Gloval, none of the Diaclone Car Robot toys look like the Diaclone pilots etc. Imagine if Human Alliance TFs tried to resemble their partners, e.g. Bumblebee's robot mode attempting to mimic Sam Witwicky... or if BTA Sunstreaker's robot mode tried to mimic Shiragami Junko! (imagine what Kiss PLAY TFs would look like if they followed the same logic!)  It honestly seems like such a stupid idea.
Just let the toy designers design their own original robot designs from the vehicles, and then package it with the character-pilot. Just look at Energon Snowcat -- it's a great example of what a Crossover toy should be (and it's not even marketed as one!). The vehicle mode is a good facsimile of the G.I. Joe Snow Cat, and the robot mode makes no attempt to resemble Snowjob. It's a nice solid robot mode, whose legs can even transform to give it skis! :) Now of course, since this toy was never intended to be a Crossover figure, the cockpit doesn't open, but it is hollow and has a detailed interior where you could easily imagine Joes sitting there piloting. It could be easily retooled with a hinge to make the cockpit open and then just give it a small Snow Job figurine to fit inside. Simple!

Watching 'Gremlins 2 - The New Batch'. We totally need crossover figures of Gremlins! You could have them transform into bats and spiders and so on just like the flick!
Hey..... I know this idea is borne of a combination of anti-flu antibiotics, beer and the fact that Gremlins 2 is in my top 5 flicks ever and currently on tv... but hell - I'd buy'em! :D

They could do a TF/MLP crossover next year considering it's the year of the horse. Mind you, NONE of the "Year of the---" TFs have EVER been based on toys that reflect the animal of that Lunar Calendar year (e.g. Year of the Dragon TF was a truck, Year of the Snake was a excavation vehicle x battleship). They could retool/redeco Mach Kick into a MLP character... but they won't.

I think that would be pretty creepy, a bit like the "voltron from real lions" that Fatbot has had for a while as his avatar.
I don't see a lot of the attraction with crossovers. generally the vehicle mode has to be sacrificed in some way to even allow for a robot to be possible. While a lot of the Star Wars crossovers looked nice in vehicle mode a lot still had "chubby" bits to allow for body parts to be formed out of parts that would normally be too thin. Like many others the vehicle turning into a related character just doesn't work for me. It's like a Subaru Impreza turning into an UltraMarginal.
A lot of the crossovers product has not been designed by the Transformers design team which probably has a lot to do with the mediocre transformations and robot modes.
I might be able to get behind something like a series of things like famous vehicles that transform. preferably not turning into a movie character. ecto-1, batmobile, mad car, mystery machine, General Lee, delorian just to name a few.
I'd rather pay less for a very nice representation of Star Trek vehicles that doesn't transform.
meh, overall.

^Totally agree. The existing Crossover figures could've been a whole lot better if the robot modes weren't trying to emulate an existing character. Energon Snow Cat works so much better as a GI Joe/TF crossover figure because the robot mode isn't trying to look like Snow Job; it's just an original robot made from the vehicle.
It also doesn't make sense from a story POV for most of these characters to even have mecha resembling the pilots. Except for Tony Stark... it totally makes sense for his mech to look like Iron Man. :p I think it'd be cooler if the vehicles just had original robot modes.

There's a KO version that combines with some of the other trains like James and Henry to make a bigger bot that I see from time to time in the street markets. I just look at it and shudder. Sooooo sooo glad my son didn't stay in the Thomas phase for long.
I saw news recently that Takara Tomy is releasing a Toy Story combiner later in the year... I like Toy Story but I'm not a fan of them as a giant combined robot...

HAHA,
That's almost Voltron.
It's clear from the comments in this thread that the robot looking like the pilot or other related character is really unpopular.
I saw the Disney one at Kings Comics around a year ago, it looked like the connection tolerances were not very good at all as the display model was not holding together. I imagine the Toy story one coming out later this year will be just as mediocre.

If they did a K.I.T.T transformer I would HAVE to get it... and whilst I am a sucker for a black pontiac firebird version which would be my absolute ideal I would also happily have the Mustang as well.

things like Liger Zero, Berserk Fury/Furher, Gun Sniper, Shadow Fox, Raynos, Death Stinger, Dark Horn and Iron Kong
Maybe a Gojulas Giga/ Trypticon too
Especially if Liger Zero turns into Lio Convoy with a design like from the beast wars IDW comics from a few years back

+ GoBots (duh)
Unlikely.
Hasbro bought out Tonka (and thus their properties like Gobots) in the early 90s to basically snuff out Transformers' main competitor. They've even taken steps to maintain Gobot trademarks to prevent anyone else from using them, starting with the G2 Autobot whose personal name was "Gobots" and so on. Individual Gobots appearing as Transformers members have typically been limited exclusive repaints designed by fans, and they've always been repaints of existing TF moulds. Others have just been reusing the trademarks and bear no resemblance or relation to the Gobots themselves (e.g. Armada Leader-1 etc.).
Another thing with Gobots is that it could produce a legal problem if they made updated toys of the original Gobots. This is because Machine Robo, the Japanese toyline that became Gobots, is still owned by Bandai. HasTak can get away with repainting Transformer moulds and using Gobot names because Bandai doesn't own the rights to those. But they couldn't say make a Generations Leader-1 toy that looked like Leader-1 (or Eagle Robo as it's own in Japan) because the distinctive likeness belongs to Bandai.

Since IDW is releasing a Star Trek/Transformers crossover, I can't deny that a transforming classic Enterprise (or perhaps Enterprise-A), Romulan Warbird, or Klingon Bird of Prey would be pretty cool...
Of course with how hit and miss the Star Wars line was, and how thin some of the supporting structures are on those ships, the end robot mode may just end up a gangly mess!

Can I throw my support behind Star Wars Transformers but done properly?
Granted there aren't really enough vehicles to support a proper 'line' as it were, because the Rebels had mainly starfighters. Still, I suppose we had the Alternity line which only had 4 unique molds.
TIE Interceptors into the Seekers
TIE Advanced as Megatron
AT-AT as Soundwave
AT-ST as Rumble/Frenzy

As I mentioned back in post #19, I think that Crossover TFs could be so much better made if they just stopped trying to make the robot modes resemble the pilots or other organic character. Just have them transform into unique robots.
Imagine if 80s Mecha franchises tried to make the robots resemble the pilots?
e.g. VF-1J looking like Hikaru Ichijo, VF-1S looking like Roy Focker, Gazette Oberon lookin like its female pilot etc., or heck, the Diaclone Car Robots resembling Diaclone Pilots... it'd be pretty terrible IMO. Look at Energon Snow Cat -- it's a nice little Transformer that never tried to resemble Snowjob. Heck, as goofy as Pacific Rim is, it's not as if the Jaegers tried to look like their pilots either. Imagine if the Green Voltron Lion looked like Pidge with glasses? No!
Here (https://technabob.com/blog/2013/04/28/star-trek-enterprise-transformer/) is a kitbashed Star Trek Enterprise Transformer toy that someone made. As you can see, it has its own robot mode that isn't trying to look like Kirk or Picard. Just let the robot be a robot.

I Like that, but it does look like Geordi LaForge.
I'd love to see some star trek transformer crossovers. I've always loved the appearance of star trek ships. I also completely agree that they shouldn't be trying to look like a character from the vehicle, I'd much prefer an original design or some reference to a transformers character. I think this is one of the reasons I never collected the Star Wars Crossovers.
I'd suggest that with a little geometrical license the thin elements of ships like the enterprise could be worked with quite well. Consider the generations Lugnut, sure the wings weren't supporting warp nacelles but they did transform and become arms quite effectively.
