View Full Version : Transformers + love = ???

So, I am most probably wrong, but with the release of MTMTE 16 last week, and Rewinds posthumous declaration of love for Chromedome it occured to me, is that the first time that we've had Transformers tell one another "I love you"?

We've had official 'couplings' before, I suppose (such as Airrazor/Tigertron), but I don't remember them every actually addressing it in story, and, you know, I'm sure there's some familial Transformers which would have a strong connection to justify it, but have we ever actually seen Transformers declare things like this before?

Are Chromedome and Rewind not only the first gay TF couple, but the first Transformers couple to actually vocalise how they feel with those three words?

To be fair, I don't even think Chromedome/Rewind are gay. Cybertronians in IDW aren't either male or female, they're basically genderless (with the exception of Arcee, and I guess there might be some weirdos out there).

But no, this is the first genuine "I love you" between two G1 Transformers. It's weird but handled well, I think.

Since what Chromedome said wasn't actually printed, it's about the same level as:

DANIEL: Arcee, I just wanna say... Arcee, I... I...
ARCEE: You don't have to, Daniel. I feel the same way, too.

But yes - Chromedome and Rewind have been presented as "significant others" since pretty much the beginning - as I suggested thirteen months ago (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showpost.php?p=290960&postcount=4). And it's implied that Chromedome had a thing for/with Prowl before Rewind. In Japan, Airazor and Tigatron were arguably a gay couple - and since Tigatron's beast mode was female, they may have been lesbians in western Beast Wars too. Iguanus (with his shell) and Tracks both practised the narcissistic love that's a form of homosexuality.

Don't forget that Airazor was male in Japanese continuity... so... ;)

And Silverbolt and Blackarachnia's love for each other was about as apparently as a direct slap to the face with a live trout. The G1 TF Victory manga showed that the Decepticons had wives and kids and they were actually fighting to protect them (<shudder> by far one of the lowest points of the manga).

I would never have imagined in official fiction a Transformer saying "I love you" to another Transformer without one of them being portrayed as a "female" Transformer. It's great (except for the whole heartbreaking element of the context) and part of the worldbuilding exploration of Cybertronian society that is one of my favourite parts of the MTMTE series.

I'm either doing pretty well avoiding the backlash about "gay" Transformers or there isn't too much (which would be great but it's probably the former).

Chromedome's words are a mystery, I hope it was the same as Rewind's final message. The cruelest bit of the end of #15? Neither of them could read each other's lips! Argh! Damn faceplates!

The four pages of Rewind's composite message were some of the most beautifully written of a beautifully-written issue in a beautifully-written series. (Oh, and Sam said "I love you" to Bumblebee in ROTF.)

I feel like a moron for completely getting about Silverbolt and Miss Blackarachnia, quite possibly the most unsubtle relationship in TF history that never confirmed itself this way. I guess it didn't really need to, but still.

Airrazor and Tigatron is interesting because it seems to have just happened, and there it is and nothing is said, and ends with them being merged into one being, which I find hilarious for some reason.

The worldbuilding that Roberts does is so good that I'm afraid it's going to get more heatbreaking as he builds for people up... (And I've totally started calling my partner my Conjunx Endura because I am that sad. Tellingly that's still a red link on the wiki...)

Some goods points guys, thanks for the help keep 'em coming.

Ah, sorry about that mate, Didn't even think about that, just assumed it was as much crack for everyone else, and they'd get it digital or just look up the issue because they have to know. Really didn't even think.

Ah, don't sweat it mate. Done the same thing by accident once or twice myself. I just usually get my comics a few weeks later than everyone else because I live in the bush and have to wait for a mate from the city to be travelling up this way to bring them to me.

This is the MTMTE comic, there's a lot more stuff that happens and is revealed in issue #16 that this thread hasn't spoilt.

My comic shop didn't get my copy in, so I Comixology'd it while I wait for the hard copy.

I suppose if you were going to travel half way, might as well go the full hog into Melbourne, but if you get to Bendigo much there is a comic shop just near where the Toy World used to be on High St.

Yeah, Mechbiter on here (Matt) runs the Good vs Evil comic shop in Bendigo and he puts all the TF comics all aside for me. Luckily there is usually a mate heading up Swan Hill way every 4-6 week so they grab'em an deliver them for me :) Right now I am just trying to get one of my Bendigo mates to head up to the Big W there to snag me some Kreon Microchangers :D;)

I do miss Comics R Us in the CBD in Melb though, used to hang out and shoot the shit with those guys for ages when I'd go in to grab my TF comic fix :)
