This has been like a jigsaw puzzle in the last few months, with bits of info an news leaking out of Japan, but not enough to know for sure what this was.

It looks like there will soon be a Transformers toy that will be remote controlled in robot mode (and maybe vehicle mode as well)... so that it can walk - as opposed to just moving on wheels like Hasbro RC figures.

It is based on a new car in Japan called the FJ Cruiser... by Toyota.
As such, it looks like it might have to be a licensed figure.

It appears to be an Optimus robot, which most one-off (or pilot) toys will be to help sell it.

The concept art looks very impressive, but the end result looks nothing like it.

I had read on an earlier report that this figure was likely to retail for about 4,000yen (about AU$45), and be released 28th September.

Some images here. (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/japanese-transformers-40/new-images-of-transformers-fj-cruiser-optimus-prime-178244/)

For some reason, reading this made me think of the Machine Men's Robot Winch Truck (http://counter-x.net/gobots/reviews/robo_machine/robot_winch_truck.html) (that I recall from that one Machine Men comic I've hung on to all these years).

Then I clicked the link and saw the image and thought, ha, not too far off! :)

This vehicle may be new in Japan but its certainly not new to Australia - its been on aussie roads for a while now, the exact same model and style. I'm surprised its taken this long to appear in Japan to be honest.

Japanese roads are full of mini-cars, you hardly ever see a big anything let alone an offroad 4wd!

not bad at all.

EDIT: apparently these are the non-remote controlled versions whereas that original picture that actually looks like an ugly remote controlled walking robot is the ugly remote controlled walking robot.

Toyota sells them here, I don't like them. I hope Takara make other characters with other licensed cars.

Otherwise it will be repeatedly expensive to collect the whole set.

Indeed it has been out here for a while. It's a modernised tribute to the old FJ Landcruisers:

Given that Landcruisers are renowned in places like Australia and Africa, it's not surprising that Australia was one of the first places to see the new version. I don't believe that Japan holds them in such high regard as we do. Amusing considering they make them :)

Here's a nice and clear video of the RC version transforming... (http://youtu.be/i6awaPB620c)

By the way, looks like the white/yellow set is limited to TRU in Japan and a few "Cybertron Satellite" stores. To get the complete set of colour parts, it seems you have to get them through a Toyota centre.

It's got exactly the same transformation as the braverobotics one (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAvG0buqa2Q) just much, much crappier. It doesn't stand up by itself and it appears that it can't even walk.

I suppose that's the price for it being reasonably priced
