If we had an Aldi in town I'd go buy like 5 of them. Unfortunately Aldi refuses to build any stores north of Bundaberg.

that's not bad at all. 3cm narrower and shorter than Ikea's Detolf, but it's $50 cheaper and has adjustable shelves.

So these are worth getting? I kinda dismissed it at first and thought I'll wait for the Ikea ones. But there's seems to be real interest here, and I do need a display cabinet or three. Hmm.

That's one of them in your collection photos (http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/transformers-collection-showcase/944995-jilm101s-collection.html) right? (With Metroplex, Trypticon, Scorponok...). It looks better in your photo than in the sample pic. Maybe because it's got Transformers in it :)

it's definitely a car purchase, though depending on how far it is, you could probably support it on a trolley if you were careful.

The significant other graciously helped with my shop. Picked up 2 of them, have only built one. Now I can display some items that have been shelved for far too long! They're a real pain in the arse to build as the instructions are crap and there are some major design flaws which cause hell to the builder that I won't go into. However despite the criticism the cabinet is solid and looks great!

What were the major design flaws?

Lint

What were the major design flaws?

1. The way the locking piece is designed the glass door will always be orientated about 5-10 degrees INTO the cabinet when shut. The plastic door stopper at the bottom of the cabinet however, is designed for a door that sits perfectly parallel to the cabinet. This puts a twisting stress on the glass door when you lock it into position. I decided to remove the plastic stopper to avoid this stress on the glass. The incongruity isn't visually noticeable unless you are looking for it.

2. The way I built my first cabinet, 1 out of the 4 frame pieces that form the top and bottom squares is upside down. This means that the MDF boards at the top and bottom of the cabinet are forced to be recessed instead of flush with the framework. Had a long hard think about this and I don't think there is any other way to build it so that all 4 frames are oriented the same way. Now that I have a better idea of what I'm doing I'll have a play with cabinet #2 when I build it and see if I am wrong about what I just said.

Materials-wise I'm quite happy: the aluminium frames are of reasonable quality (didn't bend or scratch too easily despite my manhandlings) and the tempered glass is tough (dropped some objects on them, scraped them with a screwdriver by accident and stressed some of the panels to get them into position) so I would still recommend them as a display unit on a budget.

hmmm, I got one of their hand truck - expandable trolleys from a previous weeks sale.... if budget allows I might be able to get at least one.... do you need 2 people to build this though? The ikea Detolf said you do, but I was able to make do with just me - this one hmmm looks like I would need an extra pair of hands indeed.

One person can build this, but it is a lot easier with 2 as the early stages can be awkward.

The flatpacks are nearly 45kg each. While it is theoretically possible to get them out of your car on your own I definitely recommend 2 people :p

I put mine together last night, initial assembly was upside down.. once I read the instructions all the way through I figured it out though.

I like the design it's quite neat and well presented and the fact that you can adjust shelf hight is fantastic.
as Lint said the plastic stopper and lock combination needs a bit of work in the design phase. My top piece of wood doesn't fit I need to shave a bit off it's length and width to get it to sit between the frames.

All it needs now is a good lighting solution.

You should be able to have all 4 pieces of frame facing the same way on the top and the bottom. perhaps you got a couple incorrect pieces in your flatpack.

Nah you're right, I just built my first one incorrectly. I built the second one by myself on the weekend and when you don't have someone 'helping' you the construction process is a lot less chaotic

Though truth be told I actually like my mis-built first one a lot better. The recessed top stops things rolling/sliding off and for some reason the entire cabinet seems more stable.

I had a look at some lighting solutions on the weekend. I think downlights are out of the question, they will generate far too much heat and are kind of bulky. Battery powered LED lamps are cheap and easy but I don't think they are bright enough.

I think what would work are strip LED's running down each of the 4 corners of the cabinet, however this seems to be a really expensive solution if buying retail.

Halogen lights will definitely produce too much heat. I ahve a couple small battery powered LED lights, they are OK but they don't spread light very well.

I agree that I think led strips down the corners will probably work best and I also agree that the retail availability of these is very expensive for what they are. LED's are not an expensive tech.

Led's are the best solution for heat without a doubt finding a solution you're happy with is my biggest issue.

I will have to look into that, it never occurred to me, would a normal pet store have much or should I go to an aquarium shop?

quite far mate, I live at Quakers Hill. 30 mins by train.

that is a little far, especially given I don't know if I'll be playing baseball that day or not.

Another solution would be: the Australian Baseball league is starting up for the summer in November, I usually head to some of those games and have to go past Quakers hill to get there, I could stop by your place and drop off one evening on the way to a game.

If you are happy to wait that long and pay the $100 up front (it's better for the homeloan offset that way:)), I'll have a look next time I go past Aldi and see if they have any left.

I had a look at them as well, they are more expensive and the bright ones are still as bulky as a halogen downlight. If there are supercompact versions I would like to know about them!

I find that Aldi rotate their 'weekly specials' quite strictly. If you don't get the damned things on the week of the sale it's pretty much a lost cause because they'll be gone by the next catalogue.

That said, I got mine on the first day of the sale, and between me and someone else from Footscray who reserved over the phone there was only 1 cabinet left in the store (don't know about out back).

yeah I find that to be the case - like when they had those expandable hand trolley - everyone was after one when I went in, I beelined to where it is immediately as I noticed there was only 4 - for the whole store stock - needless to say after I picked up mine - the 3 others went like poof. And I see a lot of bewildered faces around looking at the empty palate space....

Good thing about ALDI though is that they always recycle their sales and given time this cabinet will come into sale again.. just gotta be fast enough. :p
