As mentioned my son has discovered Generation one and subquently has favourites he wants. But really wants his transformers as close to Generation one as possible
He has got tru mp10 but I ain't buying many other masterpieces for him for a little bit. Need some help on some slightly less expensive ones. However need to look somewhat like gen 1 counterparts and relatively scale with mp 10
His faves atm are
Grimlock
Inferno
Bumblebee
Soundwave
Sea pray
Skyfire (loves loves loves skyfire)
Ironhide
Ratchet
Ravage
Jazz
Omega supreme
Preceptor (want preceptor for Xmas? Wtf? Haha)
Any help would great guys. My boy is hooked!

You're going to struggle to find anything G1 accurate that scales with Masterpiece figures without actually buying Masterpiece figures.
If you don't want to break the bank on MP figures, the Classics/Universe/Generations/RTS lines are probably your best bet, though even then some of those figures can be very expensive.
Grimlock: You can pick up the recent FoC Grimlock relatively cheaply. He doesn't look much like his G1 counterpart and he doesn't scale with MP10 very well either, but there is a third party upgrade kit that will at least give him a G1 accurate head. Otherwise G1 and Masterpiece are your options.
Inferno: You can pick up Universe Inferno for ~US$60 on eBay. I don't know of any other realistic options.
Bumblebee: You can probably pick up the RTS Bumblebee very cheaply which is an updated G1 look (different car mode), or alternatively the new Generations Bumblebee is an option (also cheap), but not even remotely G1.
Soundwave: Short of the G1 and MP figures there isn't a good G1 accurate representation of Soundwave. The recent WFC and FoC figures might interest you, but I'm not a big fan of either of them. Music Label Soundwave would be a good option, but for the price you're probably better off just paying a little extra and buying the MP figure instead.
Ironhide: BBTS (Big Bad Toy Store) carries PP05P which is the only G1 accurate Ironhide available. It's US$99 and is really more suited to the CHUGs line, but can just about pass next to MP figures. It's kind of a nightmare to transform though and I'm not sure how well suited it would be for your son.
Ratchet: I don't think there's any reasonably affordable option for Ratchet. You could pick up the Transformers Prime figure, but he doesn't really resemble his G1 self very closely at all.
Ravage: The Hasbro MP Soundwave is the best place to get this guy. There are some third party options that aren't as good, and a version of him also came packed in with Classics Hound (again an average version of him). Takara are re-releasing Hound soon, but I'm not sure if he'll still come with Ravage.
Jazz: The RTS Jazz figure is pretty awesome and the best option, though he's not really accurate to G1, but rather an updated version of G1 Jazz.
Omega Supreme: There's an extremely expensive third party Omega Supreme and the not quite so expensive, but still expensive, Year of the Snake Omega Supreme re-issue. Neither is very accurate to G1, but those are pretty much your only options short of the original G1 toy.
Perceptor: The RTS figure is very nice, but not that close to his G1 counterpart. He transforms into some kind of "Sciencey" Exploratory Vehicle.

Well, Grimlock has a release in the form of fall of cybertron. However, this did not come here, so you may have to look online. It's a good play toy in my opinion.
Inferno had a release in classics back in 2006, so you'd have to look online and he commands a high price usually, though you might be able to find a good one.
Bumblebee is a tough one. If he only wants one that's in the Volkswagen beetle form, it's gonna be tough. They are releasing a Volkswagen beetle Masterpiece next year, which is smaller than most masterpieces.
Soundwave is a great option. I think Target have been getting a Voyager Soundwave in stock lately and I personally like the toy a lot.
Seaspray is quite a tough one. There hasn't really been a reasonably sized version of him yet, besides the original 1984-6 toy. We have been getting quite a few of the smaller bots lately so you may want to wait it out.
Skyfire/Jetfire. This guy has a great release back in 2006 under classics. He just had an Asian rerelease, which is available at various places online, such as here (http://www.robotkingdom.com/services/eshop/main.php?action=details&CatType=&II=TFCC2013002&lang=us&CatID=). He's a fantastic toy and the paint on this one is superb. He commands $90 though. He's quite expensive on the secondary market too.
Ironhide, there was a release back in 2008 which you may find online for a reasonable price. (Transformers Universe Ironhide)
Ratchet had a release back in 2008 also as a redeco of Ironhide. (same toy, different colours)
However, there is the Prime release last year, which I know has had a restock in Big W stores for $10 clearance, so you could find one or ask some members here to get one for you. He's a pretty good toy. I use him as G1 Ratchet myself, as he has a lot of resemblance to the original cartoon model.
Ravage should be generally easy to get. There were two 2 packs of cassettes released last year to go with the previously mentioned Soundwave, who already comes with Laserbeak. Ravage was in one with Rumble (a blue guy) under the generations line. It's relatively small and around $15 and he should suffice.
Jazz also had a generations release last year, so you should be able to find him sometime. There was also a more G1ish release back in 2011 under the reveal the shield line. A member might be able to help you get him. In my opininon, the RTS version is much better. ;)
Omega Supreme, oh boy. He had a platinum edition release at Big W VERY recently for $98. He seems to be gone from shelves now but you might be able to track one down. He's a pretty big toy and is great IMO.
Lastly, Perceptor had a release in the reveal the shield line in 2011. He should be reasonably easy to find. :)
Just ask some of the members around here and they might be able to fix you up with some toys.
Here are some links to help you as well, mostly ebay: ;)
Skyfire: http://www.robotkingdom.com/services/eshop/main.php?action=details&CatType=&II=TFCC2013002&lang=us&CatID=
Grimlock:http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Hasbro-Transformers-Generations-Voyager-Platinum-Edition-Grimlock-Complete-Loose-/221270056496?pt=AU_Action_Figures&hash=item3384b91e30&_uhb=1 (this particular version has a superb paintjob and is very attractive. Better than regular release)
Inferno: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TRANSFORMERS-Classics-Universe-Voyager-Class-INFERNO-Near-Complete-/321130897503?pt=US_Action_Figures&hash=item4ac4e4a05f&_uhb=1 (I'd go for a loose one, too expensive sealed)
Bumblebee (various):

http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=HAS22611&mode=retail (comes with little Optimus as well;))
Soundwave:http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Transformers-Generations-2012-Fall-of-Cybertron-Voyager-Soundwave-Laserbeak-/310498742172?pt=AU_Action_Figures&hash=item484b2acf9c&_uhb=1
Ironhide: http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=TAK10848&mode=retail (quite expensive though)
Ratchet: Big W (have a search)
Ravage: Should be able to find at retail, but: http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=HAS22364&mode=retail
Jazz: http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=HAS21731&mode=retail
Omega Supreme: May be at retail (maybe ask some members- check our sightings section)
Perceptor: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Transformers-Reveal-the-Shield-Perceptor-MOSC-2011-Deluxe-Classics-/190879040816?pt=US_Action_Figures&hash=item2c71470530&_uhb=1
I'd also recommend getting some of the DVDs of the G1 series, which can be found at most stores. They come in 4 volumes for all 4 seasons. There is also the movie (though it features the deaths of characters such as Ironhide, Ratchet and Optimus Prime, so you may want to hold out until he's a little older- great movie though :))
Also with Soundwave and Ravage, there was also a rerelease of the original 1984 Soundwave (with a bulkier chest, but minor) with the original Laserbeak and Ravage. Soundwave actually transforms into a cassette player and Laserbeak and Ravage Microcassettes. He's a fun toy and great for play. :)

Hopefully I can help. :)
I personally think they are accurate enough to pass off as the original characters. I used my little non-transforming metal construction vehicles as Constructicons when I was a kid, so if they have an expansive imagination, these should do fine. I also agree with much of the above post. :)

I guess you could get him the generations, RTS toys as everyone has already mentioned... in robot mode though they may not match quite well as MP size towers well above, but the vehicle modes are somehow relatively correct in scale ...although if he is hooked on G1 anyways it wont matter much to him hehehe , Prime looks so tall when next to everyone else in his troops in G1 toons so I guess he wouldn't mind - scale is always an issue anyways with TFs hehehe

for Seaspray you might have to grab the bayverse one - though opt for the Jap version as it has brighter (more G1 match) colors than the dull blue and yellow orange colors that the Hasbro has.

I agree w/ what some others have said -- go w/ Classicsverse. :) liegeprime's pics show how well they can scale w/ MP10, and this thread (http://otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=9742) shows comparison pics between Classicverse and G1 toys.
