Hi Guys and Gals,

I was about to start a new thread discussing how relatively spoilt we are (or are not) in today's toy age compared to the TF fans of the 80's, 90's and 00's. But to do so I need more data.

So please feel free to put your info into the poll above. It is completely anonymous. It will be interesting to see how the demographics play out (Baby Boomers vs Gen X vs Gen Y vs Kiddlets).

If you actually want to share your age and expand upon how you think it may have affected you as a TF fan then please do so by all means :). For instance, I will be 36 this Thursday. I was 7 when the G1 cartoon hit our TV's so it was perfectly aimed to hit all my happy buttons and rewire my brain to the point it is nearly 30 years later and I spend all my spare cash on figures that emulate or pay homage to the G1 characters I grew up with. Hence why the majority of my TF cash has gone to lines like Classics, Generations, Alternators, KRE-O's, RObot Heroes etc etc.

If you are 1 day past your 60th birthday then you would pick 60+.

If you are experiencing you 60th birthday on the day you mark your place in the poll then you mark 51 to 60.

Does this satisfy you Mr Pedantic ;)

I think you'll find many similar stories. A lot of the long-timers in this community are around the same age, being kids when G1 began.

I actually say something similar to what you said there when explaining why I've been a diehard TF so long: like "I was 6 when Transformers came out and was the perfect age..."

I think I was about the same age...what year did it come out over here? 1984? 1985? I would have been a little older..around 8 or 9.

Done.

Like a few already, I was 9 when seeing G1 for the first time and after being conditioned by the marketing for Star Wars, then MOTU, I was smack in the middle of the key demographic for TFs, with the phrase "collect them all" still ringing in my head close on 30 years later!

I'll be very curious to see the final results, but I think the mode will most likely be the 36-40 category.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics lists Gen-X as 1965-1981 so I just get in too... but I think we are on opposite ends of the spectrum:p

Damn, we are getting old. :(
When we first started, most of us were around the 20 mark.... now the largest group are late 30s.

And I used to joke about middle-aged toy collectors, or at least, not seeing myself ever being one... and now many of us are just about there.

This is a very interesting Poll.

I believe I was 5 when Transformers came out. hooked.

The fact that there are members who talk about their wife watching how much they spend on their collection and others who talk about setting aside a collection room in their new house... points to an older average age amongst the group.

Australia might be a bit unique in that the G1 cartoon was still airing reruns all the way through to... 1995ish? Although at some point it become the G2 version. The gold-box Classics meant that we had a good selection of G1 toys around through to the early 90's. What I'm trying to say is that when I was about 5/6 (1991/2) I can vividly remember being able to watch G1 on TV and getting toys like the "Classic" Stunticons for Xmas... so us "younger" folk can be authentically G1 and not have a receding hairline (yet).

Surprised to see a few in the under 25s bracket which I guess could be attributed to the movies bringing people into the fandom.

I remember when I began collecting 10 years ago there was only one bloke around my age. :p

Oh darn, I'm not Gen X.:( X is the cool letter.:(

I'd also like to take this time to object to Hasbro calling this the 30th Anniversary of Transformers. I was born in 1984 and I'm 29 god damit. I'm not 30!!!:p:D

griffin
5th November 2013, 05:07 PM
I too don't like them using the "30th" label so early... but I guess with the total disappointment that was the 25th anniversary (thanks to the second Michael Bay movie taking up all their resources), I guess Hasbro wanted to at least commemorate the feat this time in some way, BEFORE the movie line takes over retail shelves and (fan) media attention from April to November.
That only leaves a couple months at the start of the year before Retailers start cutting back on all TFs product just to clear shelves in time for their big launch of Movie toys. And it is unlikely we'll see retailers restocking before the end of the year (if the last three years have shown us anything).

I think Hasbro will try to push out as much Generations stuff as possible next year, but they will get a lot of resistance from Retailers, who just want to focus on the Movie toys throughout most of 2014.
We could have had some really nice commemorative stuff too, if it weren't for the TF4 movie, as the 20th Anniversary gave us a couple things (before the Brand was big enough to warrant too much fanfare). The popularity now could have had some big things for the 25th and 30th.... but now we will just have to wait for the 40th Anniversary, and hope we don't have Michael Bay's "TF27 - the Prime Revenge of the Dark Age of Bumblebee" getting in the way of that one too... :p

We had reruns for most of the 2004-2008 period as well.

I wouldn't sweat it Hursti, my brother was born in '86 and has two siblings who are gen x-ers and guess how he turned out. He can't stand the "typical" Gen Y-er. In my previous line of work I saw a big difference in the two generations but the date they were born was very blurred.

Like many others here, I was a child of the 1980s who grew up with the original series of Transformers which we just called "Transformers" (the name "Generation 1" was only coined around mid 1993 when G2 came out and everything before it automatically became "G1" by default ;)).

Different forms of averages ;). And since there have been another couple of extra people put their data on they are all moot now anyway

You can usually take the Mean as the average of all the numbers

Average Age of Ozformer members: 32
Middle Age of Ozformer members: 33
Most common age group: 36 - 40

I'm all for simplified transformations in my toys, but I think that my like of quick transformations and solid articulation comes from my time of playing with energon toys when I was 5 or so. It just made sense to be a quick and fluid movement, and when I bought movie toys, I was constantly frustrated with the pause when I was in the zone.

But yeah, simplified transformations, but not articulation.
