View Full Version : Fan Toys FT-04 Scoria (Slag)

From the makers of Quakewave: Fan Toys FT-04 Scoria (MP Slag)

The toy is made to scale with MP Grimlock. It appears to be a couple of cm taller than MP-08 Grimlock but that height may be due to the Triceratops hood which is perfectly alright. It's possible that they are trying to prevent irrational fan anger by adding the 'lift' accessories.

From TFW:

- It is 25cm is tall to his head and to the top of the figure is about 27cm.
- It will come with an add on part for MP-8 to make it almost same height as Ft-04.

Quakewave was decent but flawed. This looks a lot better. :)

I don't suppose they've mentioned the other two dinobots?

Looking forward to their treatment of Jeffire as well. The other 3PP Jetfires have been kinda cruddy.

NIce. I'm basing it from their initial Salvo - Quakewave. Hope it's as good of better in quality. Love that they're able to articulate all the fingers :D. So I guess the sword will have that light up gimmick as well from the looks of it.

From those silhouette beside him they plan to do Swoop as well....me likey!! Can't wait... oooh If they make Snarl with golden plates, Im so sold on that !! Snarl's my fave! :D

Im right now wishing they make a Megatron as well, since Hasbro isn't interested at all in making one and is quite inhibited in making a decent one as well due to gun laws and materials and costs. We need stronger plastics for MP types of figures...

$200 price tag is a bit much but it's standard for Takara Masterpieces.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing how they make the hind legs disappear into the robot legs. Looking at these pics I have an idea but nothing beats finding out first hand.

And release dates. We need release dates.

16th November 2013, 09:45 AM
The FT rep has indicated on TFW that the price is higher due to FT-04 having roughly 100 more parts than FT-03, resulting in the mould costs being nearly double. If they hold to the same timing as their last figure, we're probably looking at a February-March release.

Shipping weight of 1.05 lbs according to BBTS. It's a little light for its size isn't it? Based on that, wouldn't appear to have much die cast. As a comparison, MP Grimlock is over 3 lbs shipping weight, again quoting BBTS.

You're right. His hood height is more accurate to his toy & cartoon appearances (http://heroicdecepticon.blogspot.com.au/2012/08/pre-transformers-diaclone-dinosaur-robo_29.html?m=1). Irrational fans? Never... :p

Thats a very nice looking rendition. I like the fact that they've included a light up energo sword, but no electron blaster?

To me it's just a as detailed as MP Grimlock and not much more than G1.

Looks dope, but I'm a bit hesitant about some of these 3rd party quasi-MP's as any eventual Takara offering would make them redundant (to me). I would speculate that we will eventually see a full set of official MP Dinobots, it just might take another 5 years or so.

I agree with this sentiment. Though, these are very tempting, I would love more dinobots next to grimlock and always wanted a new bigger and improved Jetfire.

Scale weirdos. They think that the world will implode if Takara don't make another Grimlock larger than MP-10 because the scale chart says that the Dinobots are bigger than Prime.

A quote someone from TFW sums up my thoughts on the subject (in the Dinobots case anyway)

Screw scale and the horse it rode in on.

I rather like that :p

And I wonder if you can get those platform shoes complete with goldfish in them??

I personally think Grimlock is just fine in terms of scale with other MPs. I knows he's taller, but he's not a whole bloody torso length's taller.

I agree with the sentiment too, but think your speculation is unlikely given the long gestation and release process of Takara MP's. We are lucky to get more than one mold a year. Also I think Takaratomy seem to mostly pick safe major characters, or toys that turn into cool cars.

The pessimist in me says we'll be lucky to get Ultra Magnus,Blaster, a hand full of Autobot cars and a few more Starscream repaints/retools before Takatomy reboot the line with yet another new MP Prime.

Sure hope we get a MP Jazz though.

Seeing that photo now wit the 2 MP figures got me to rethink. I thought it was just a few mm higher than Grimlock, but they actually had to put some extension platforms (manolo blahniks anyone? :p) isn't right, why couldn't they just make they're figure shorter/proper scale in the first place. These are just test models anyways, surely they can still scale it down to proper sizing with no alteration to the original MP it was intended to pair up with. I'm not adding anything to MP Grimlock, he's fine the way he is. Besides what are those platforms going to be when he's in Dino mode? Might just skip this then if that's what they plan to do, meh.. Ill wait for swoop , mebbe that'll be at least in scale somehow and Skyfire. He's supposed to be very big anyway.

According to official G1 cartoon scale - Slag is taller than Grimlock. The height 'lifts' are probably just to prevent irrational fan anger from taking momentum away.

liegeprime
17th November 2013, 08:00 PM
yeah but Slag's higher than Grim because of the dino head(ress) and horns is acceptable, if you look at where Slag's shoulder and head is he's shorter than Grimlock (toys - 2nd picture). They (FT) should've done than and accounted that into scaling instead. Slag's shoulder reaches up to Grimlock's bicep area... with the new figure they're doing, it's the other way around... waaaay other way around.

Iriorne
17th November 2013, 08:11 PM
Interesting, looks like they managed to add another 2 cm or so with the shoes, and the robot mode proportions don't seem to have been too badly affected. Some of the speculation on TFW was that it would be a complete leg/thigh/hip replacement but I think that was unlikely.

I would have been happy if they'd just scaled Slag to the existing Grimlock figure but I can't really fault them for going the way the have. No matter what, someone was going to be unhappy. There's always the choice not to use the shoes, and at least this way the door is left open for a new Grimlock figure which will scale properly with MP-10 and the other FT Dinobots. I wouldn't be surprised if FansToys do their own if there's no sign of one from TT by the time the finish with the rest of the team.

I actually think the proportions are thrown off a bit with the lifts. After looking at the latest pics from the last page and noticing that Grimlock is already wearing the lifts, I can indeed see that they made Slag really large.

I am still not too fussed but I do wonder why they did this. I personally don't think Tak-Tom would do another MP Grimlock unless the line gets rebooted again and that would probably be to a smaller size not bigger.

I'm going to guess they made this guy big to scale with Optimus and the newer car MP's rather than Grimlock.

Personally I'm still with the "Screw scale and the horse it rode in on" guy from TFW quoted earlier. My interest in this toy is pending the dinobot mode and the colours, not going to dismiss it our of hand because the size is not exactly perfect.

Yeah I was thinking the same. It seems that they are moving to scale things with MP-10 (Grimlock with lifts included).

An odd direction as it would have been better if they just scaled with MP Grimlock but not a huge deterrent. Alt mode and colors also would be more of a decider for me.

Interesting... never knew about this site. Although, it looks like they have some serious price errors - e.g. FP Diesel for RM50 (AUD18), and full set of the FP not-Stunticons for RM400 (AUD140)??? That's just NOT POSSIBLE, given they haven't flagged it as a KO. Anyone confirm this??

I doubt that. There seems to be a retailer fallout after a movie cycle finishes. It started with ROTF but specially so with DOTM movie toys shelf warming badly (1001 Bumblebees and non toy related junk). TF Prime appears to not have been so hot either (could be wrong).

Tak-Tom also seem to have a fair bit of a list of MPs to make so that will keep them occupied for the next couple of years.

I don't think they've got much to worry about. Quakewave sold really well with how many runs they ended up doing. And the quality is quite good on that figure. So long as the quality doesn't drop and TakTom don't reveal they are doing the other Dinos, FT don't really have much to worry about.

By a hell of a lot ;)

I'd say that's a general trend... Although it still depends highly on production numbers and popularity of the figure. By most reports Terminus Hexatron is an excellent figure but you can still get it at original retail at many sellers. Same goes for FansProject not-Stunticons and Mech Ideas Demolition Crüe - all considered good figures. Then there's the possibility of second runs e.g. MakeToys Green Giant.

So, seems to me like its figures that are either very popular or made in small amounts (or both) that end up sold out and shoot up in price on the after-market. QuakeWave would be a recent example.

How would Scoria perform?? Based on company record, you'd have to guess that he'll be one that goes quickly, but it's still hard to say I reckon, as at least part of this will depend on how good the figure actually is... And that's something we won't know for sure until release, or prototype reviews hit the net.

Judging from my Mugen Vox (the Soundwave repaint), it's crap.

Only looks good in robot mode.
While the joints are nice and firm the most important one feels like it'll snap whenever I move it. The 'microscope' is mounted on a jointed arm that ends in the smallest L-shaped bar and tiniest ball joint. The ball joint is continuously popping out and the L-bar is so thin it's already developing stress marks.

Yeah thats about right. But it does make a nice looking perceptor in bot mode.

Ooh, shiny! Was browsing through the TFW thread and I get the impression there will be two decos released - animated and toy. Haven't found the source for that, though.

That's it. Have to preorder.

True. Dalianjj said it. However toy deco won't be released at the same time.

I am fairly sure Dalianjj said that both Scoria and the upcoming Not-Swoop will be released in 3 versions. Cartoon accurate first, then G1 toy accurate with a final special edition coming last.

It's all there in the TFW2005 thread.

I am undecided :( I love how Scoria looks. And with their proven record with Quakewave, it's a safe bet. But with Grimlock and those feet. I just don't know. I still think Grimlock looks a little small even with the boots next to Scoria. And both still feel a little small next to MP10.

I think I like how big Gigapower's Snarl is better, but do I really want to buy Gigapower's version of Grimlock just to scale with their Snarl when I already have an MP Grimlock?

Arghhhhh...!

I wasn't entirely convinced about the boots but after seeing them in colour on Grimlock, I think they actually look quite good. I have a feeling it's as much the change in Grimlock's more familiar proportions as anything that makes them seem a bit jarring.

I think I'll stick to FansToys - they have a proven history and the scale is more consistent with the rest of the masterpiece line. We're also more likely to see their product sooner as according to their TFW forum rep, they've decided to move the rest of the dinobots up in the design/production queue; Swoop has already been teased, Snarl is a strong possibility to follow on and Sludge is considered 'challenging' by FT's rep which suggests he might be a little further off. They've also said that if there's no new MP Grimlock figure in the MP-10 scale by the time they finish the others, there's a good chance they'll do one themselves.

Even if they don't, I can live with the boots. Famous last words? ;)

because he was designed to scale with MP-10 as has been pointed out before. MP Grimlock is just too small.

When you see the Dinobot mode against MP-10's Truck mode and the lambos and datsuns, Scoria really scales well (imo.)

edit: er, sorry, I think I misunderstood your point. Goes to show you kids: never post when you're over-tired. Please ignore the following...

I'm not sure I understand why they'd made the choice to scale with MP-1 when it makes him out of scale with MP-8 and MP-10. If I was a 3rd party designer making alternate MPs, I'd scale them with what's more current. Besides, it's not like they're going to fix MP-8's apparent scale issues by making Scoria bigger, with or without the add-on. Obviously, it's FT's choice to do it the way they're doing it, and it doesn't seem like it will hurt sales much.

I'm kind of hell-bent on recreating SOS Dinobots in MP form, though I'll need at least Sideswipe, Wheeljack, Bumblebee, Optimus, Slag, Grimlock and Sludge. Someone better release a Sludge soon. Then later on (hopefully) we'll have a Megatron to go with Swoop and Snarl for War of the Dinobots.

I solved my scale problem by putting MP-08 and MP-10 at opposite ends of the shelf. :) They're close-ish enough to the right scale that the mismatch is only really noticeable when they're standing next to each other.

Should be out by the end of the month. Check Robot Kingdom, TFI Downunder, E Hobby Base Shop, BBTS etc for availability.

Wasn't there going to be a toy colored version which would have had clear plastic?

There will be a toy coloured version however it won't have the smoked plastic over chrome as the space in the head is just too restricted to allow it, not to mention potential durability issues with the clear parts. Nothing much has been said about the toy deco, but I think it's safe to say it will have a black head, and probably some extra or changed paint details. Expect to see more details in the next few weeks now that the first run of Scoria is shipping. There'll also be a more limited version painted to match the MP-08X release due out towards the end of the year.

Shame they weren't drawn as different heights. I always thought of Swoop being smallest (although larger than your average 'Bot) and Sludge being biggest, followed by Grimlock, Snarl and Slag being about the same.

Wow, that's a nice piece of art! I would buy a team like that in an instant. I love the idea of Swoop as a fembot and the differing heights. Diversity is such a huge part of the various Transformers lines so it seems a shame for them all to be so similar.

Don't really agree with the artist's concept though. The Dinobots are meant to be the strongest & toughest TF's so there is no room for a fembot in the Dinobot team IMO.

Although I'm not entirely a fan of retconning character's gender, I'd have to agree here based on the "Toughest & Strongest" comment - There are many ways one can be both those things and one's gender certainly is no limiter. ;):)

I still haven't got an e-mail confirming my order or shipment. It's over 24 hours now. Is this standard for chimungmung?

I've logged into their store and can see my order and it's still "pending".

I'm not so fussy on waiting time but a confirmation e-mail order would be nice. At the moment, all I've got is the Paypal receipt.

Also, they have new preorder for a release later this month for $10 cheaper.

Just got mine and started playing lol

Chimungmung = great service but Tony forgot to send me the sticker sheet :(

Quick review;

This thing is SOLID and heavy. You can feel the amount of die cast put into Scoria. He feels very MP-1 Prime.
The Head is changeable with 2 different mouth pieces in red as well as the chrome which is cool.. but you have to have one of those tiny screw drivers to change them.
The arm joints are weak but everything else (legs, hip) has a solid 'click' to it and is very pose-able with the feet.
The hands are sooo stiff but every finger moves individually which is cool.

Not too hard to transform into robot mode thanks to the great instructions (and english lol).

Scoria looks awesome in dino mode.. so much better than robot mode. The extendable tail is fantastic.. and again he is very solid, long and just fits in my ikea glass stand :)

So there's a quick review. Very happy with the purchase :D

I'll try and get some pics up when i have time. but don't count on me :p

I just love his horn are diecast as well.... standing next to grimlock with the feet extension, grimlock still a little shorter , they don't show you how the back pack fold away properly, I think the neck shield fold back like in the picture..? Very solid figure with good plastic used . There so many diecast on him making him very solid ... The only thing for me is that in dino mode he looks abit to long ...
also his weapon got LED feature to them. Both gun and sword but batteries not included , which is nice to know that it there adding it more quality to the figure .

Heft: This reminds me of MP-01/02 when I first got them as toys. Just beefy, solid, premium toys. That's not to say what's come since hasn't been quality, its just a really nice feeling to pick up a figure and know straight away someone's invested a lot of money to make it a premium toy

Balance : Color me impressed. Unlike MP-01/2/3/5, despite its heft it is exceptionally steady. No wobbling from side to side or easy to knock over, it holds poses impressively despite the size of the figure.

Articulation As with the balance. Wow. You can try different poses with the range of articulation it has and you don't have to worry about it toppling over like Jenga (or MP-01/02).

The fact the sword can only be held at an angle annoys me. Fortunately FT gave us good wrist articulation so that Slag can hold it is good but it still peeves me that Slag can only hold it an angle seems to be an oversight.

The hands and fingers are a highlight. Best hands I've seen on a TF toy ever. Excellent articulation but tight and sturdy. Takara could learn a thing or two here.

Transformation: no worse than Grimlock and I'd argue its more involved with the legs that MP-08. Not complex but nor does it have to be to have an intuitive enjoyable transformation. The legs are the highlight.

My major gripe with this figure comes with not the stowage of the hands. The panel that you have to open to fold or pull the hands out are very tight. I feel like I'm stressing the plastic every time I open it. Annoying.

There's also a bit of annoyance I have with not all the tail bits and backpack locking into anything. There are grooves but the parts rest there as opposed to locking in.

QC: Two points:
- Slag's left arm is more loose at the elbow than the right. Not hugely but noticeable.
- Half of the black flaps above the right arm where the Dino toes are popped out of the gap they were supposed to be in. I had to unscrew the toy and refit it. Fortunately it was easy enough to pop the 3 screws and then put it back together.

Alt Mode : Triceratops mode rocks. Looks great. Wonderful articulation in the head and tail. Really looks good. I can't decide whether to keep it in this mode or robot mode.

Robot Mode It rocks. The head sculpt is G1 Slag in every way. The options for faces is great too and I'm undecided as to which I'll stick with.

The only other point I'd note would be the scale. Like others have mentioned, even with the boots, MP08 is small. I'm interested now in a bigger and better MP08. I think playing with MP08 again reminded me one of its failings is the floppiness of the whole chest drop down. That annoys me more than a bit. It's still a nice figure but there is room for improvement and if FT revisit it, I'm not too fussed. Based on this offering, I'm up for it.

It does raise the question though. If FTs version gets done, it's competing with an official product (MP08). Fandom generally gets upset if you replicate what's already been done before - even if it's too improve scale. It'll be interesting to see how people rationalise it.

Lastly, annoyed i didn't get the promised sticker sheets. The chest on Slag really needs it for that extra bit of pop. My impatience will likely result in me peeling off one of my Arms Microns one :o

Overall Happy to have this and am eagerly looking forward to the next Dinobots. Really want to round them out now. Before this, it was more of a nice to have but after getting this in hand, I want more. The other lingering question is how good will the other competitors be? That's the only thing keeping me from getting a spare (which I traditionally do for anything that passes a certain level)

Are you after the generic sticker sheet with various size Autobot insignias that Tony normally sends with 3P TF toys? I have spares & can send you a sticker sheet in the mail free of charge. If so, drop me a PM.

got mine this morning and MAN he is WICKED!!!!

and I agree with everything STL said except on my one, the arms/shoulders are loose. if i try and put the sword with batteries on it, his whole arm droops..

sucks but can be fixed so im not too fussed.....

Also i didn't get any stickers but since i already have (alot) set of reprolabels lying around, I place one on his chest.... not sure if he needs another one on the dino head? will have to google that.

Also at first I was sooooo disapointed that MP-8 was shorter but then... it came with Mp-8 boots! :)

didnt realize until this afternoon when i threw the packaging away and found the boots under the plastic! phew! lucky the wife saw :)

now MP-8 is as tall as him. :) Overall Very Happy purchase! Just ordered another one to keep on alt mode.

cant wait for the rest of the dinobots to come!

I'm looking forward to SLUDGE!!!

Damn! You're keen. Plenty of other 3rd Party bots for you to throw $$ at. And what if the Gigapower Dinobots turn out to be better...

Got mine today as well after it sat in HK for a week before shipping out, ah well.

Pretty much what STL already said. The shoulders and elbow swivel are a bit loose, but not too bad.

Bot - I don't like how high the dino head is, pity it can't be lowered a bit - minor gripe.

Alt - Not really liking how thin and long he is. I didn't think I'd care, but it does look a bit off even though it is cartoon accurate. Same with his rear legs, they seem too small even tho they are toon accurate. Minor gripes again.

Overall a very impressive figure.

Have FT said that they will be making a Grimlock as well?

IMHO i think they have done very very well with scoria.....

I have a couple loose joints, but I don't find them too bad. Personally, I'm more worried about one of the hind legs in Dino mode. The ball joint is so tight, it makes this horrible squeeking sound. Feels like it may crack and break over time.

...finally someone came to help grimlock out... I tried to get my Mp Hotrod in there but honestly I don't think that bot was built for articulation or posing...It just couldn't happen. Also, btw Fanstoys have assured me that anyone suffering loose joints will be be sent replacement parts to fix this problem. This will be done through the retailers aparently. So anyone that bought one through us at Tfi Down Under, if you have any complaints, just let me know and I'll be onto it :) it's my left arm that is loose and can't hold the gun up at all, but other than that, I like it better than most mp's I was like a little kid all over again when I received it.

for those who have the scoria figure, where in the packaging were grimlock's "boots" supposed to be? I can't seem to find mine - I have a feeling my figure was not packaged with the boots???

Guys,

for those who have the scoria figure, where in the packaging were grimlock's "boots"? I can't seem to find mine - I have a feeling my figure was not packaged with the boots.

I had a look at where they might have supposed to have been packed and I see a big cavity behind scoria's head where the boots look like they might fit...

???

Aren't they supposed to be taped under a part of the packaging or something? - I seem to remember hearing/reading that somewhere. :o

ITZTRU

nope i've checked everywhere. there was a cavity behind scoria's head in the packaging because i didn't push him all the way in when i put him back, so the cavity wouldn't have even been able to house the boots. I'm sure it didn't fall out of the packaging anywhere when I slid the plastic tray out...

Where'd you pick him up from? - Perhaps if you got in contact with them you might be able to work something out? :o

this thing is very very nice. nice enough that i just pre ordered sever.

i already have soar on pre order as i just need an MP swoop type :)

the engineering in the legs alone is worth the price.
this is probably the best of the 3rd party figures i have and to be honest in many ways is better than the TT/H mp figures.

looks like they are releasing two variants of scoria
http://tfsource.com/fanstoys/FT04X-scoria/
and
http://tfsource.com/fanstoys/FT04T-scoria/

one to match better with mp08X

and one because why not

and one because why not

the T version they always said that they would release a variant that was more akin to the original toy (rather than the one released earlier which was more closely aligned to the cartoon)

The X version is the one you mention to match the Grimlock 08X (which is meant to look like the UK comics representation of the characters)

scoria-x will have silver paint like mp08x does and from memory a similar rest of t he paint job as original scoria

scoria-t will have a paintjob that reflects the g1 toy better , for example red horns and a black head

xlojnr
19th December 2014, 02:01 AM
the new scoria's (both X and T) also have a deeper colour gold chrome on the dino head.

I thought that Scoria X's paint apps were more akin to the toy version (only difference between the T and X being the silvered grey paint and USD25 in price). The X version is also limited run (1,000 units I think Dalianjj said..)
