BBTS have this up for preorder here (http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/product.aspx?product=TOY10608&mode=retail&utm_source=retail_news&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=BigBadToyStore-Retail&utm_content=). Due February at $225US

We’re pleased and excited to once more feature Voltron in our family of licenses, and what better way to kick off this new chapter than with the 30th Edition Voltron!

Standing at 11 inches tall (nearly 13 inches with its display base), the 30th Anniversary edition will feature LED light-up eyes (powered by replaceable batteries) and sturdy die-cast and ABS construction, and will include a very special signature Voltron badge. This badge, when properly transformed, will become a key that can be used to activate light and sound features on the display base, including the legendary "lion's roar." The 30th separates into the individual lions, will also come with the lion's-mouth blade accessory, and will come packaged in a classic retro-styled anniversary box.

Same here, Hursti. I saw it and my immediate reaction was  followed by :D
As much as i would like to own one (i'm still after a decent representation at a reasonable price) I'm saving up for my big purchase of the Hot Toys 1966 Batman & Robin due in April :o

Same here. I got a little excited then realized that it looks the same as the collectors edition. Though the light up is a nice touch along with the key gimmick. But at that price, ill pass.

Shmexy, but expensive. I was rather hoping their 30th Volty wouldn't be so pricey. But it has the metals in it, which is nice. Since Transformers aren't really doing it for me atm, I might just save up for that sexy beast!

Hmmmm quite tempted. Did they not do a 25th anniversary one too? In a book format?

Hmmmm quite tempted. Did they not do a 25th anniversary one too? In a book format?

The book format was the one that people went ape over since it got to be quite rare and the book packaging is unique to Toynami's Masterpiece line - including Robotech.

Now you may not get the book any more but at least you have a another metal Voltron hopefully with better quality materials and the stand and LED eyes to boot.

i have the original, and i STRONGLY recommend this one if it is anything like my one. Stands strong and tall, with the sword blades and other little weapons for the lions when separated.

Well worth the money, but i think shipping is gonna hurt.. i still have my box from forever ago and its pretty huge!

Shipping from bbts is about usd$60 so making it $285. Not too sure if it now. Ha ha.

Reckon this will drop in price?

I think they're just taking advantage of the scarcity of the older releases of this toy. There's no way in hell it's worth $225 plus shipping! The old plastic release (that i have, and from what i've read is more balanced than the old diecast version), used to retail for $50!

It really sucks that this is the best Lion Voltron just by default due to no competition. It doesn't quite look right (mostly proportions), it barely poses in the legs, and is no better engineered than the original Matchbox toy.

I'd recommend the recent Vehicle Voltron (http://chimungmung.com/product_info.php?products_id=1429) over this one and just have some patience for a Soul of Chogokin Golion... it has to come some day...

thanks for the insight into this... crazy to think that toy prices have gone up so so much... has purchasing power gone up or is it just inflation...

looks like 30th Anniversary Voltron is not taking my money for sure :D

I don't think it's either purchasing power OR inflation. Probably just greed. :p

Lighty gimmicks and noises shouldn't cost an extra $175.00. Most of the designing has been done already, all they would have had to do is modify the head a bit for the LED eyes.

Hopefully noone buys it and it ends up being discounted to $50 ;)

this thing is all metal and little plastic. not overly poseable but you can get some good poses weilding the sword, open/ closed mouth lions etc.

Finally got my set in with my big Pile of Loot from BBTS! Overall I'm glad to have it, but it certainly isnt as amazing as I thought it would be! I personally think the Miracle Productions MA-01 Vehicle Voltron to be a better overall figure design. Full video review uploading now.

It has diecast, but still has a LOT of plastic! The MA-01 has much more diecast, although I dont necessarily see that as an issue quality wise (diecast doesnt automatically mean better quality).

Yeah, the first batch of the MA-01 certainly had its problems, but the v2 with all the QC fixes is a pretty great figure. I think it's a lot better than the Toynami Lion Voltron actually now that I've had more time to mess around with them.

IMO The Miracle Vehicle Voltron QC issues were blown way out of proportion from just a few overly picky and/or clumsy fools. I got one of the first and Tets here got one of the second, while there's improvements to be sure, they're pretty minor. The 1st release was no slouch at all and i never felt like i got ripped for being impatient :D

That new Lion Voltron is supposed to have improved joints compared to the earlier releases, to better deal with the diecast weight, but they look the same from your pics? Sounds like you didn't own one of the earlier ones though? Will watch your video later, thanks!

Just watched the review and my opinion (of the toy) Hmm, nice, but definitley doesn't look like it's $224 worth...

The limited hips, seems a bit of an oversight. while I like the metal, that plus the blingy stand and lighty eyes just do not justify the massive price. Sure the metal would put it up, but the lions aren't complex deisgns, so they'd be easy enough to bust out.

I just don't think it stands up well when compared to other high calibre robots. For that price you can get yourself a nice chogokin combiner bot no problems...

Yep, I agree, it's definitely over priced for what really amounts to a minor update to an existing figure. It really does need a proper redesign to add some new technology around articulation and joints etc.

The more closely I look at the lions and mess around with the set, the more I feel it is way over priced for what it is. It really doesn't feel like a high end quality product! The joints, especially on the lion legs, are really crap. Combined, it certainly looks decent enough in the display cabinet, but no where near worth $225+!

Wow. They look REALLY nice together.

Yeah, as nostalgic display pieces, they're pretty nice. I would've liked some better quality with the new Toynami, but I'll treat both pretty much like statues anyway. So as part of my 80s classic cartoons collection, I'm happy to have them now.

I've been keeping an eye on that Voltron for a while, it's looking good. Releases 20th November.
Not much is known about the company i think, nor whether it's officially licensed.

It doesn't appear to be a very wide release either, only LCM Toy (http://lcmtoy.com/beast-king-golion) or Mad Toys (http://www.madtoys-infinity.com/) site itself seems to be offering.
I'm pleased enough with my Toynami version but the latest pics are making it difficult to resist!

Can't disagree with those comments. But the Toynami version was originally released at a mere $50. IIRC. The rarity of a quality collector's Voltron pushed up the porice. Then they re-released it with electonic eyes and jacked up the price somewhat ridiculously.

So essentially, at the most the original is just a ~$60-70 figure as opposed to this one, which is designed to be much sexier.

Still, I am mighty tempted by this beasty.

The market really has played havoc with the price of Toynami Voltrons... the prices on Ebay were ludicrious when i was looking to buy one, and even worse now, even after the 30th anniversary release! I paid $130 for mine and so that's what i'll try and get for it now anyway.

I can understand no interest in TF 3rd party - at least officially there is still lots of choice. But here we're talking about WEP, who has done zilch for Voltron since it's heyday pretty much. They're battling with Harmony Gold for worst toy related company as far as i'm concerned, so stuff em!

Aargh, It matters to me. Even though MW V Voltron was a 3rd party thingo, it was sorta legit merch. The story is what I love about it.

This one is just plain 3rd party...... No story.... So torn. Looks da shizz though.

Fair enough! Haha.

to be fair we do buy 3rd party transformers so what's the difference with this?

Perfect solution - you buy my Official Toynami Voltron, i buy the Mad Toys one with less guilt, everybody wins! I'll even let you see the Mad Toys one when ur back in Aus! What a deal! :p
Wow, that is a great deal... Until I saw a Toynami one in the video review.

I've avoided 3rd party TFs on a moral (and wallet) basis, to me if it it isn't licensed it isn't a TF. Must admit though, the 3rd party stuff I have (Mostly FP) is very nice.

Well macross of course, but fo YOU really think Bandai Japan will really make one and upset everyone else and have a law suit above thier heads for one toy?
This legal limbo with Voltron is making more and more inclined to go to the effort of getting one.

4,macross

I watched them ooh and ahh over V Voltron when it was first anounced and they even had the guy who made it on thier silly show. They were all nice to him to his face. Then thier true colors show in this video where they bash it.

I am a bit out of the loop, can you guys show me links for this? as in the hypocrites. lol

I saw it in some youtube videos. When the MW VVoltron was in development they were all excited for it and went nuts on it. Had a guy with preview shots and the die cast parts to show off etc

Then in the MT Voltron Vid, they grab VVoltron, wiggle it about, say it looks a bit derpy next to the LVolton and ask MT to look into designing VVoltron again.

I think maybe the guy was a bit excited, but MW V is a good design. The fault kind of lies in VVoltron being so many pieces. Have a look at his waist piece alone and you can imagine how hard it would be to get joints in there, then add on the pressure of the small thigh piece. They have a lot of pressure to cope with when you move his legs around as they are plugged into the shins and hips and are fairly small.

It's a bit like comparing a combiner TF to a slight partsformer TF in a way I guess.

The guy who CollectionDX had on the show was the owner of a shop called ToyFreaks. He was claiming to be exclusive distributor in the states for Miracle's Voltron but in the end, Miracle claim they only met with him once, and he basically robbed them, since they sent him VV's to keep customers happy, but never saw any of the money. The ToyFreaks site disappeared a while back so presumably he's out of business.

I concur with Tets though - the VV is about as good as you could hope for, for a 15 vehicle combiner. Mine's one of the earlier releases that had some problems too. While they improved things with later runs, the internet would have you believe that the first release is a pile of shit, but there's really not a whole lot of difference.

I just sent them an email asking for an update, so hopefully hear back something soon. I saw in my bank account the actual amount i ended up paying (after rate conversion and so on) ... on the one hand, damn it was a lot LOL but on the other.. whenever i look at the pics i just NEED it! So i hope they come through.

The latest podcast video from Collection DX on YouTube has Josh fiddling around with it - he lifts it up horizontal and despite the heft of diecast in the legs, the joints are so strong it barely moves!

But he doesn't sound too optimistic about the release .. though i don't think he knows any more than we do tbh.

He comes with two heads for the arm lions, one is lighter than the other and the jaw doesn't open as much as the heavier one. They both work with the rocket punch thing. I am still trying to figure out why we have two heads for the arms. Curious.

Are you able to convert the second pair to a ball joint version?
If there isn't room for it, I guess the only other method is to shave and file it till is rotatable, lots of work. I wished they didn't do the stupid flying fist.

VGMStudios
29th December 2014, 08:30 AM
You do know why they've added the flying fists right?
there really isn't much room for a ball/joint system. Ive been thinking about how to go about it.
I may have to reconstruct the lower part of the fist because where the long end that meets the head that goes into the arm is very thin.

I also thought of shaving down the long piece as well. I wouldn't do it cause thats what locks the fist into place. Shaving it down will make it loos and it will fall out easily.

Im thinking super strong earth magnets might do the trick.

Hell it's part of the anime so flying fist? You do realise is an expensive toy to be shooting fist anyway? Half the reviews I read, nobody really bothers about the shooting fist. I wished the 2nd pair was at least rotatable. If I missed something on why is THis so important to shoot the fist please enlighten me.

I only see reviews pointing it out as an obstruction as it can't rotate.

Earth magnets are great but does that mean you break off the shaft? Obviously my ideas are crap asi don't have the toy in hand.

No not at all. Doesnt matter how expensive it is. Shooting fists is an homage to old chogokin figures. It has nothing to do with the anime. So it was a really nice touch that they actually have added it to this figure. No one pays homage to older figures like this anymore. Some, like yourself, may not like it, while others, like the older generation, are really pleased that they added it in. Of course you cannot please everyone. Im on the fence about it.

Yes you would have to cut off the shaft to add 2 magnets. Again its only an idea. Once my workshop is set up again, Im going to figure out a way to have both the shooting fists AND rotatable wrists. Dont worry about it to much right now.

drifand
29th December 2014, 10:58 AM
I am from the older generation of collecting.
The bandai chogokin series have discarded this gimmick long ago.
Hence this is like a more than 3/4 part modernised toy and you have a retro part for the wrong reasons. I have so many popy classics and they are solid fist not a movable lion jaw in this case.

The second fist should had allow for the modern age. Heck if it just rotate and not shoot would have made it a very posable robot.

That's my main and only complain about the toy. Yes I still want it as I think toyami isn't interested to up their game or let bandai win.

I do realise it is similar to masterpiece grimlock so it will be a more or less slight compromise on posing.

Good NEWS everyone!

The King of Beasts DOES have an arm swivel which can be used as a wrist swivel.

I was putting away The King of Beasts back into his box (we are moving) when I was saying to myself, "if he doesn't have wrists, then I wish he arm would at least move sideways", and I was pretending to move his arm sideways when it moved. I was all like  IT MOVED! So he DOES have an arm swivel, awesome! Made my day. Now I dont have to modify him!

I guess they forgot to add it in the manual for some reason, or maybe they didnt even know themselves.

To do this, grab both sides of the lion arm. One hand on the back, the other on the torso and twist. It will be stiff at first, like you're going to break it. You'll hear a *SNAP* (most likely the paint) and it will flow freely.
I suggest doing this with the arm DETACHED from the main body.

Toynami is a turd in comparison, but then it was designed with a lower budget in mind.

The elbow joints there aren't as great as a wrist joint (yes I did know about them and surprised more people didn't). I still would've preferred the wrist joint, for pointing that sword over a rocket punch.

Toynami is a turd in comparison, but then it was designed with a lower budget in mind.

And yet they are changing premium prices for the latest release and probably wonder why there is a market for the Mad Toys version

Is it bad?

Something's a little off, like maybe the forehead is a bit big or the mouth too close too the nose? But on the figure taken as a whole it matches well and looks great.

What i found interesting was how different in deco it was to the Toynami version - then i looked around and noticed there seems to be no definitive head deco, across all the toys, cartoon, box art etc, they're almost all slightly different.

Shoot him a polite message. As much as it is long, it is out of his hands and I can understand this. He does take the effort to reply you and that's what I am ok with. There is service on his part.

Oh, nothing wrong with his service, I just can't believe I'm so anxiously waiting for this figure, more than the TFs I pre-order.

I didn't think about it anymore, is basically suck in with Toyami if you think they will do a better job. Toyami is basically like Harmony gold and will not let any voltron products release. Though I have to say Toyami at least make toys and not sitting on their asses suing people who put in more effort.
But their overall attempt isn't that great.

I had countless times waiting for a Bandai SOC release, but seems like Toyami refuse to allow it.

It's a pity the didn't release this instead, and sadly my gokin has reached.

drifand
17th February 2015, 11:29 AM
Just opened my gokin
I can see the leg attachment issue, and I think I be scoring a bit down points on that lock mechanism as it may wear out.

Somehow, it didn't feel as metal as what I thought it was going to be. I do like the ratchet joints, but I still feel the fist was a bad design, it should have allowed me to shoot the head if I insert it at any 90 degree angle if it was hard to do a launching head.

The face, does look awkward to me for a moment, but after a while I didn't mind it.

What bugs me is that if you guys say the Toyami isn't as cool, then I guess its probably a turd in comparison.

The new Toyami voltron looks more proportion, but I am again finding the fist a bit angled? I guess you can't win everything.

I would rate 8/10 for this toy.

drifand
17th February 2015, 04:30 PM
Just looking at the new toyami voltron and I wonder anyone feel that the bottom lions heads look smaller than usual? I was just about to think they might pull off a great piece but the heads look kind of weird even for the fist at an angle.

I am going to agree here, it looks a bit off, the Voltron looked okay at first glance then I noticed the heads on the bottom feet looks small and out.

I think this is more like a action figure version.

Can't say, but being Toyami, they have taken HG approach, and that's to nail any third party from making Voltron. I have read rocketpunch Army that when he reviewed the 30th anniversary version he had chat with Toyami, and said he was a nice chap and said he isn't against third party but I doubt it.

Pretty much you were right, WEP has given exclusive rights to them, and we will never see a Voltron toy made by Bandai or anyone else with license.

As for this new toy, I think only Voltron mode appeals to me, but the foot looks off.

Good in terms of how it looks, bad as in harder to repair if anything is wrong.

Well looks like that's it folks from them as I do not see anymore reissue or new products from them.

It's a shame as they used 0 pvc/abs plastic which bandai used too much and those materials will melt away.

Won't disagree there but yes if they actually work on a better version 2 I definately won't mind getting it especially when is wep approved as well.

I felt if the legs of all the lions were angled would give a more natural look rather than just straight ones.

Tetsuwan Convoy

Thats a good poit too actually.

I thought an official Lion Voltron was in the works earlier as well. Looked a bit stylized, which I kind of liked, and would be fine with a complete plastic figure, IF the price is right.

I wonder if that means that version has been dropped?
