I've never used flickr (I'm a photobucket fellow), but it sounds like you're doing the right thing.
paste the link into the dialogue box that appears after clicking the little yellow picture icon.

Consider having a quick browse through this thread (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=14101&page=8&highlight=posting+image) too - Sorry, I've no idea how to use Flikr either. :o

In Flickr, if you click on the Share icon (the arrow in the rectangle), you'll find an option "Grab the BB/HTML code".
Change the option to BB code and it will give you all you need to copy and paste straight into a post here.
It will look like this
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/numbers (http://www.flickr.com/photos/numbers/)

In the string of codes that you copy pasted there are the big letters IMG before [url\] and the another big IMG after the 2nd [url\] - get rid (delete) of those before you post the pics. if you notice there's already a smaller img -2 actually - that is within the url. keep those.
Basically what your code will look when copy pasted is
IMG [url] img blah blah blah blah img [url] IMG
so delete the two outer most IMG, then look at your message in Preview message to be sure you didn't delete more than the 2 large IMG letters.
That should get rid of it and leave just the picture.
hope this helps

Since this is a popular query, I added it to the Userguide, under Rule 11 about Hotlinking (http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=2).
I will have to look to see if these sorts of things can be added to the FAQ in the top banner, as it only seems to focus on how to use the board... or put them somewhere easier to find, as the Userguide is pretty long now.
