Darn, I have to get up to speed, I haven't even started MTMTE yet.
So this is the bringing together of the two casts from MTMTE and RID? It sounds so exciting but I'm so far behind. :(

Took me a while but I caught up, kinda. Ok so I've got to go back and read about 75% of Transformers Ongoing, The Death of Optimus Prime and the miniseries and one offs from the same era. But that part of the IDWverse is so mind numbingly dull at times.

Not really. The casts are still doing their own things and not mixing, they are just having their scenes appear in each other's books.
It's really a RID story appearing in two books, featuring a MTMTE guest star, and some other pages in each chapter given over to the MTMTE crew to do something that may eventually connect to the bigger story.

Basically imagine you have a normal copy of More Than Meets The Eye and a typical copy of Robots In Disguise. Tear each comic up into sixths (approximately). Then mix them up until you have two Fuzor comics - let's call them More than Meets Disguise and Robots In The Eye. This is basically what the comics have been doing through Dark Cybertron.

Where exactly does the ongoing start, exactly? The Death of Optimus Prime?

It goes "Ongoing" (which has actually ended), then "Death of Optimus Prime", then MTMTE and RID as the new "ongoings"

I wonder if it would be easy to understand or follow, if we (as fans) decided/allocated each block of IDW comics as "seasons", to help distinguish between the different periods or eras of the IDW-verse (especially with there being two "ongoings" eras).
Or maybe that's something IDW would need to designate... like they designate which issues go into their "Volumes".

TFWiki entry for MTMTE states that IDW referred to the events post Death of Optimus Prime as 4th stage or something?

Makes sense: 1st Furman -ation era, 2nd All Hail Megatron, 3rd Costa Ongoing, 4th Dual ongoings MTMTE and RID. Each major changes revamps from the one before.
