hey guys i couldn't find any threads that were for model building so i thought that i'd start one, so if anyone has any awesome models that they have done post them here.if there is can the mods move this thread to it please. i just finished a 1/350 warspite and it came out pretty good(well to me it did)i haven't build a model in some 20+yrs and a little later when i get back to work i'll be upgrading this 1 with PE railings and other little bits and pieces. my wife got me this kit last year and it's been sitting on top of the cupboard gathering dust until i cracked her open last week.

They are hangar parts. I got them on ebay, do a search on mechanical chain nest or hangar.
I can built a big enough hangar to take photos of a mp01 prime if needed.
Not cheap, heads up, and I have not gotten to paint the hangar yet.

Sorry, that was taken a while back and I have dismantle the hangar. It is just a bit a hassle to dig up the boxes.
They come in set of 6, so you have to combine set 1,2,3,4 whatever combination and depends on how big and tall you require.
You will see them roughly at $150 for whole set I think but technically some of the sets are not pleasing or required for me so only sets 1,2,3 are required for length and height.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TT-MECHANICAL-CHAIN-BASE-SET-Machine-Nest-and-Action-Base-for-Gundam-Model-Kit-/181117179032?pt=UK_ToysGames_ActionFigures_ActionF igures_JN&hash=item2a2b6cd498
When I said $150 I mean entire set 1-10 most places sell 1-6. you find only 1,2,3 are the main ones required for basic base and height. 4-6 are the sides.
Basically if you ask me, I say buy 1,2,3 and 7,8,9. I don't find the sides any much useful, but each to their own.
iamirondude
6th February 2014, 01:35 PM

I bought the KO version, meaning these are "china" made.

has anyone had any experience with PE(photo etch)parts? i've only used it once and it was on that warspite model(the crane arms). are there any tricks or hints on the best way to apply them or paint them?
gamblor916
8th February 2014, 04:54 PM
Most of the time I just use tweezers and these Xuron pliers (http://xuron.com/index.php/main/consumer_products/5/32). These are the best pliers I have ever used. There are more folding tools around but honestly you don't really need them.
For painting I just rub down the fret with wet and dry then prime it with metal etch primer. Glue it with Loctite super glue applied with a pin.

here are a couple more warships that i've done in the last week while it's been raining. they came in a value 2 pack from dragon in the 1/700 scale. for that scale they are pretty well detailed but some of the parts are so small.i still need to do 1 or 2 touch ups with the destroyer and finish the helicopters and airraft that came with them.

Have you tried investing in an airbrush? It will really give you and edge on your work. I am only saying this because you are a keen builder and its probably worth investing in one of those.

i've actually been thinking of getting 1 of them.they do make the paint job so much better. so i'll hopefully have 1 soon but i've never used 1 before but i'm a quick learner and there's youtube. i was checking out the compressors the other day at bunnings.

It won't be too hard however there are different types of airbrush and you need to know which one is the most comfortable you are with. I prefer the old syphon feed with the bottle below than gravity feed type.
Again is subjective but give it a go. You can get cheap air compressor from Ebay under $100 delivered.

Finally managed to find some existing photos of some of my kits to upload. It's a pretty good snap shot of a long period of modelling. The quality of the camera/s haven't been that great either... for example the Crusader below is actually British desert stone, not pink! Though the poor resolution hides much of the poor build and finishing!

It is - the Fire Support Vehicle - a Saladin turret fitted atop a strengthened hull. It's a standard Tamiya kit. Biggest critic on this kit was my old man - He pointed out that the jerry cans are US pattern, not Australian, I think the rear fenders and indicator lights are also US styled and the lifting points weren't consistent across the fleet (given they were removed and replaced with strengthened ones too).
He supported these on their trails at Tin Can Bay. They served a purpose (hence their subsequent deployment to Vietnam) but inefficiently. They were much heavier and all the weight was above the normal roof line. The engines struggled with it and failed at a much higher rate and I believe (never looked this up to confirm) they were restricted to firing at a traverse of less than 30 or 45 degrees to the hull axis less the recoil would cause them to topple onto their side.
This kit most closely represents the ones at that trial... as apparently the smoke dischargers were removed in Vietnam and some of the headlights/indicator lights. (Luckily I misted on a tan dust and not a red dust so it's at least been weathered accuractly!! :p)

i love seeing aussie miltitary equipment as model kits. you don't really get to see it much and when you do, it's worth getting for that different look and feel that we have over all of the other armies. when i was in the army they were phasing them out but the rumor of the "don't fire broadside" is true. i had a mate who was a gunner in 1 and he was telling me how when ever they fired they were terrified that they would flip, even when firing front on. i still see them here now and again so they haven't phased them out completely even tho i was in the army 20yrs ago.

Use it to practice if you're new to air brushing or sell the brushes.

I saw a thread on a modelling forum when I was looking to upgrade my brush where a similar question was asked (you think I can find it now!!!). From memory, the brand carried by bunnings is of similar design to one of the "better" name brands (and can use O-rings and needles from them interchangably)...
They were generally saying they preferred to use them becasue they worked well and were easier to clean. They only used their higher quality brushes rarely and only for fine detail work.
Sorry I can't give you a link to anything. And I can't qualify any of that discussion - I never upgraded and still use (I'm sure to the horror of most modellers) an Aztek.

yeah that right ... it what your must comfortable with .... if your just starting out ... get the feel of just using one...so any is fine... then when you get better and more confident .... you know what each adjustment do to the out come only then do you upgrade ....
Look at it like sketching....you can sketch with any pencil.... but when you get better you know which pencil is better to work with like a 2H for thin outlines , 2B for darker lines etc......
But the one thing is that the most expensive brush will NOT make you a better artist... just practise will do that !!
And also people forget about the paints used !!... use the proper thinner for each type ...and mixing the right consistency is way more important

As a conincidence, I was reading this month's issue (March 2014) of Finescale Modeler on the way to work this morning and the feature article is on airbrush choices and techniques from a number of "experts". Its an 8 page spread covering everything from type, propellant options, paint choices... it supports discussion here with more detail so maybe worth a read?
If you do want to read and can't find one at the Newsagent (though I have mine through subscription so it may not appear until end of the month/early next at your local) let me know, I can scan it and get it to you...

Like others have said just use what you have to practice and get a feel for it. I started off with an Aztek and it is IMHO garbage. Bought an Iwata Ecplise a few months later and never looked back. I picked up a Harder and Steenbeck Infinity along the way but only used it twice. It's a very nice 'brush but the Iwata does it all for me. Here's my most complicated paint job to date. I am unsure how practical this compressor is to be compatible with most hobby airbrushes.
If you check most hobby shops their coupling to the hoses are either 1/8 or 1/4" screw type.

I have one of these, and I have a set of adaptors to fit my hoses. cost me under $100.
They have water/air trap filter attached just before your hose. and had last me for ages.

I started off with an Aztek and it is IMHO garbage. Bought an Iwata Ecplise a few months later and never looked back.
I started with an Aztek too, but I found it to be a pretty good all-rounder beginner brush - relatively inexpensive and capable of a wide range of effects from a single nozzle. I've recently picked up an Iwata Eclipse HP-CS too but I'm still getting used to it as it's quite a different feel from the Aztek.
should be before your hose line so any water is trap before it goes to your airbrush.
Even with a moisture trap on the compressor, I still used to get water into the airbrush. What I suggest is to run a length of hose (~2-3m) with another water trap between your compressor and airbrush (compressor, water trap, hose, water trap, airbrush). The hose will allow the air to cool and the water trap will pick up any further condensation before it gets into your airbrush.

The ebay model looks pretty good. The important bits are the adjustable pressure and moisture trap. Low noise is handy as well.

i'm hoping they do too!!! after seeing some of the amazing paint jobs that some of you guys have been doing, i relised that to go that extra step i'd have to upgrade the way i was doing things. ok another question... what hoses and connections do i need? i didn't get any hoses with the gun or compressor.
Iriorne
9th March 2014, 02:20 PM
Depends on what you need to connect. :p
At the most basic level, all you need is something that attaches to your airbrush (Iwata use 1/8" BSP but Badger, Paasche, Aztek all use different size fittings) and to your compressor (commonly 1/4" BSP).
My setup consists of the following:
Compressor (1/4" male screw) --> 1/4" female quick release adaptor --> coiled air hose (male quick release to female quick release) --> moisture trap (male quick release to 1/4" male screw) --> braided air hose (1/4" female screw to 1/8" female screw) --> Airbrush (1/8" male screw).
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/233731/OTCA/Airbrush.JPG
From memory, I picked up the coiled hose, trap and extra fittings from Super Cheap Auto, the braided hose was off ebay. You'll also probably want some teflon tape to stop air leaking through the threads. I do highly recommend the second water trap as I regularly have to empty mine out. I also have a little hook made out of some bent wire to hang the water trap right way up.
When you get set up, try practising with water + food dye to get a feel for the brush. There's plenty of advice online about painting but I find Tamiya paints air brush really well, are quite forgiving in terms of thinning (roughly 1:1) and air pressure and clean up easily with methylated spirits or windex (ammonia).

9th March 2014, 02:31 PM

On the note, just don't go nuts. it takes a while to "know" what you are doing.
be very patient as cleaning can always be a drag but once you know what you need to do, is all good.
Also a lot of these premium airbrushes do come with the hoses. You may or may not need to buy adaptors to fit these hoses depending on size given.
Have fun.

9th March 2014, 08:13 PM
Also get a quick release for the airbrush as well...save so much time for cleaning :) an also get a holder for the airbrush!! very important you need to set the brush down somewhere .... if you paint cup full and you need to set it down upright goodluck if you don't have one...lol
gamblor916
9th March 2014, 08:55 PM
+1 on the holder. Preferably one made out of flexible plastic or rubber coated metal to prevent scratching your airbrush.
Also cleaning is really important. You don't want flecks of paint from the last session ruin your next session. I always flush mine out with lacquer thinners and clean the tip and needle thoroughly. Also where the needle travels back in the cup accumulates paint as well.

nah no need to get two guns...just clean it out properly and that will good....
it just depend on which paint your comfortable with for painting....
acrylic are easyier to wash...water ... but when dry you have to scrub abit more....
enamel is easy as well but alittle expensive as you need their cleaning solution and just can't to wash it down the drain so you have to pour and use cleaning pot .... but the paint just melt away so you don't need to scrub
then there lacquer (eg .automotive paint) as well but that thing deadly...need mask!!

Just practice. Get a feel for how thin the paint has to be. Experiment with different air pressures and distances.
Finished the interior for my F430. Belts were a bit fiddly but I like how they turned out. Just need a few things for the exterior and it'll be the first one done for 2014.

I don't usually light up my models mainly because getting access to change the battery may be difficult after everything is assembled. For some models once the body goes on it's not coming off. I'm sure there are ways to do it like making access panels and the like, but if a headlight blows for example it's almost impossible to replace.

Prep is so important. A good primer allows you to find all the flaws and makes the top coats adhere. Also stops paint from lifting when you have to mask off an area.
iamirondude
30th March 2014, 12:20 PM
how long do you let it sit between coats? and if you find flaws in the model do you reapply another primer coat after fixing it?
gamblor916
30th March 2014, 12:54 PM
Lacquer primer like the Tamiya spray can stuff dries pretty fast. I'm sure it's pretty warm where you are so you can probably sand it after an hour.
Sand, prime, sand, prime, sand, and so on until it's to your satisfaction. You can locally spray or even brush on primer to fix small flaws then spray the whole thing when it's perfect.

30th March 2014, 09:39 PM
I found Tamiya acrylics adhere to plastic well, even without a primer. As long as you let it dry for about 12 hours, it'll happily take tamiya making tape without peeling. Good quality making tape is important as the cheap stuff can leave residue. :(

Nice photos! I like the alcantara effect you achieved, even if it's not quite right up close, it'll probably be close enough once the body is closed up. It might be worth experimenting to see if you can alter the spatter pattern - I think with a finer spatter and maybe mixing your lightest colour to be slightly darker or translucent you might get a near perfect match.

You've got a nice gradation from the top colour to the bottom. For the spots it looks like the air pressure is too high. Lower it a bit and don't pull back the trigger so much. Just build the colour up slowly.

6th April 2014, 07:40 PM
Not bad for a first attempt! Your camo dots have started to run a little bit so you might want to dial back on the trigger, and use slightly thicker paint.
One technique that might be helpful is to make a 'raised mask'. Basically, cut out a hole in a piece of stiff card, then either hold it or use a small ball of blutack/tape/whatever to position it a few millimeters above the model surface. You can start spraying on the mask to get your paint/air mix right, then move it over the cut-out giving a nice soft-edged pattern.
Practise makes perfect. :)
Here's a couple of pages from an issue of FineScale Modeler which discusses how to identify and fix some common problems with airbrushing:
Page 1 (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/233731/OTCA/Modelling/AB1.jpg)
Page 2 (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/233731/OTCA/Modelling/AB2.jpg)
Edit:
With your decals, you'll often get better results if you trim as much clear film off as possible. With the wing decals, it's probably easier to cut them into individual strips first and position them by hand. Add some decal softener and they'll look fantastic, without the discolouration from the clear film. :)

For starters the model should have a gloss coat then apply wash with a fine brush into all the recesses. Tamiya, Vallejo, MIG and others all have nice product.
When dry use a cotton bud dipped in enamel thinners to wipe off excess.
Key points would be to make sure the surface is glossy and less is more.

Nice looking speeder! I just saw FineMolds are doing a limited reissue of the 1/72 Millennium Falcon... very tempting.
irondude: The gloss coat will also help hide the excess decal film as well. Over coat with gloss to seal the decals, then apply an oil wash.
You can use any artists oils (general advice is artist grade for finer pigments) and thin it down with white spirits to the consistency of dirty thinner. Greys or browns are best, avoid black. Apply with a fine brush to panel lines and detail areas and clean up the excess with a cotton swab. Avoid the temptation to touch it for a while as the oil paints can take some time to dry fully.
Another weathering tip is to grind artists chalk pastels into a powder and apply with a brush to simulate soot and blast marks. Pastels go on best over a matte coat and have a tendency to rub off unless protected with another over coat.
When applying or cleaning up weathering, wipe in the direction of the airflow for a more realistic look. :)

You're definitely getting better with the airbrush. Nice work.
The corsair II is one of those aircraft that looks ugly but purposeful. Definitely needs some hardware hanging off those pylons.

i love the the corsair 2 and the F-8 crusader. they look like they'd rip you another butt hole. my wife also thinks i should bomb it up too. so i'll make a start on the weapons a little later(customizing a few gi joe's atm).

Iriorne that is a great looking G. One day I will get to building and lighting my Mobius Vipers.
Cheers! Cost a small fortune for all the tools and parts but I'm pleased with how it turned out. Pegasus is next up, it's gonna dwarf the old Bucket. :)
Question for you gurus, you guys have advocated the use of a gloss coat but I note that your finished kits have that wonderful worn appearance and looks very matt.
How is that achieved?
Flat clear on top to seal all your weathering. You can always add more weathering after the flat coat also.
Yep. Generally, I use a gloss coat between layers for paint, decals, weathering, etc. Your final clear coat can be gloss, matte or satin, depending on the effect you're going for. The only exception is generally pastel weathering which goes on better over a matte coat; the rough surface gives the pastel dust something to bite on to and you can seal with another clear coat.
Plenty of options for clear coat, I used to use Tamiya clear, adding flat base for matte, but I've started using the MicroScale gloss and matte coats which are a bit more convenient and spray and clean up just as easily. Just be aware of the basic rules about mixing paint types. Acrylic goes fine over lacquer or enamel but the other way round can cause your paint to dissolve. :(
i'm still learning the weathering but with every tip you get better. [...] this is the first time i've really attempted to do the mottle camo on a german fighter but it turned out ok-ish.
Your mottle camouflage technique is getting better, no runs or spiders this time. :)

nice. question tho, do you have to paint the engine and the hose's etc yourself or do they come pre-painted?
gamblor916

All the plastic parts need to be painted. Some kits have vinyl hoses and wiring for extra detail. I always try to add more detail with stuff like bolts, wires and clamps. I'm also using a detail up set which has photo etch, carpets and metal stickers.

that's awesome. i've only ever done 1 car model in my life(K.I.T.T) and it never came with vinyl parts. it was just a solid lump of black plastic.

various kit's i have been working on in the last 2 weeks. been sick and don't have anything to do and the great thing was my mate picked up most of them(there are still a few more that i haven't started) for $5 from the market, never opened and they still had the original price stickers(they were brought from TRU who haven't had these types of kits for years).

Wow that F16 camo looks really good. Don't worry about progress on your weathering. It's all about trial and error and learning from mistakes. I know I still make plenty of them.

More progress on my Murcielago. I wanted to use the LXZ wheels but the chrome was damaged so I went with the Wedsport wheels inside Pegasus sleeves. I had to grind down the rims a little to get it to fit. Interior is 99% done and the exterior just needs minor details to do and a light coat of clear to seal everything.

been a bit quiet lately as i've gotten a bit sick again but i have been doing a couple of models to pass the time. i recently picked up a revell 1/32 ME-109 G-6 and it's not a bad kit but i've also done a few dragon kits and bloody hell the fit on some of the parts are horrendous. i've had to send back 3 kits to them and another to airfix cause the QC was non existent on them.i'm currently working on a revell 1/48 FW-109 mistel V with a ta-154, a 1/35 stugIII, a 1/600 bismarck, 1/72 mig 29 and a few others.

haven't been on for a while because of health issues(i'm sure this house is cursed. had nothing but bad luck since moving in) these are a few i've been working on while i try and get better and since i have nothing really to do, i've learnt a little about how to weather and get different effects.

Well I've finally finished my Lambo. There's more flaws than what I would have liked and the doors don't fit properly because I didn't check it until it was too late. I'll display it open so it won't be a problem but I don't think I'll attempt another opening door gimmick for a while. Next one everything's going to be glued shut. Kudos to the guys that can make it work and still look good.
The photos show the colour as blueish but there's a touch more green in real life.

Now for something different, a 1/7 scale resin kit. Primed in gray, then dark red undercoat. This is a pink layer with some shading. Next will be the flesh coat with some highlighting. Character from MOTU.

Third attempt at flesh coat. I think I still need to deepen the shadows a touch and add some very subtle highlights before I'm happy with it. It's a fine line between tanned and oompa loompa.

Starting the fabulous new Ducati Panigale kit from Tamiya. I thought other kit manufacturers had caught up to Tamiya standards but once I started this I realised I was wrong. This kit is fantastic. Detail is great and the fit is superb. Mine will be red with gold wheels. I'm using the Tamiya fork set and the Hobby Design detail set. I have to say this detail set is amazing as well.

Nice work iamirondude your painting skills have certainly improved.
Made a little more progress on my Panigale. For the fairing I replaced a screw point with brass tubing. I kept the lower one as screw in for strength. Fitted the forks and bars. I used the small polycaps and 1mm brass tube instead of the long screw. Added cf to front and rear fenders. Finished exhaust piping though I probably made the weld lines a bit too thick.

Gorgeous model of a sweet bike, love single swing arm bikes a lot. But I'll probably stick to my cbr500r til it dies. I have a huge backlog/stash too, it's all gundam, I'm too scared to branch out to other lines yet lest I open a huge can of worms. Cars would definitely be where I'd head though, and that lambo spider looks amazing for a model.

Wow just looked back a couple of pages to see what you were talking about, and those fighters look amazing. I love ww2 planes. It just reminds me though why I never really got into modelling with my older brothers, as I've said in the gundam kit (and its obvious because they were winging it and had no resources to look up about painting/top coating etc) but they'd end up with a ww2 fighter that was glossy, thick paint, and besides the odd finger print or loose bristle it was like a showroom condition car.
I dont think I'd have the patience or time to learn, and since I'm only into gunpla at the moment I'm fine with no weathering etc (and at the moment no paint), I'm just treating them like (fragile) toys that require a lot of assembly to pass the time.

Anyone know anything about hseng brand airbrush/compressor? I've looked around for reviews or comparisons to iwata but to no avail. LHS has 1/6 hp with 3L tank l, regulator and an airbrush with 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5 as a kit. Had previously been looking at a cheap kit on ebay that's voltair brand, cheap about $120 for 1/6 hp tank, regulator, airbrush (basically the same but just 0.3) for $123 shipped... and if the airbrush didnt tirn out well just buy an iwata one for about $100. But if hseng are ok it'd save time/money/mucking about.
Edit - joined another forum to reaf some real reviews, hseng is referred to as knock off it seems, things like bent needles out of the box, almost non-existant spare parts service... if i could just find a cheapish compressor local i'd be happy, but they all seem to be 'kits'
gamblor916

Any small compressor will work. One with a tank will prevent pulsing airflow and pick up a moisture trap. I use 2, one connected to the compressor and a pistol grip type attached to the airbrush.

Ep7 Stormtrooper needs black/white hands and weapons to do. Whomever thought that multi-coloured parts were a good idea needs to be fired. BB8 is a gem of a kit. Here's a new way of doing weathering I've discovered using Bandai marker pens. I've used black, grey and brown. The top one is the blending pen, basically thinner in pen format.
http://i328.photobucket.com/albums/l356/leducly/IMG_5348_zpsgpnjczwy.jpg
Run the marker pens over all the panel lines and shadow areas. Then use the blending pen to fade and blend everything together. Since it uses thinner (not sure what kind but smells like ipa) it may go through to the base paint so be careful not to use too much.

More Aoshima lambos. This time the Sesto Elemento and combining the Aventador roadster and 50th kits to make a 50th roadster.
For the Sesto interior tub I primed with black then using a little bit of sponge I dabbed on two shades of grey in a kind of random pattern. Everything was blended together with smoke and finished off with semi-gloss clear.

Bandai's excellent Resistance X-wing. Had great fun weathering this thing. Vajello water effects on the base.

Slowly working through my backlog of Bandai SW kits, this one was surprising easy with minimal parts, but the end result is still the same high standard you would expect from Bandai. Only needs a little bit of chrome silver & black paint on the helmet, finish off with some gunmetal paint for the light saber
The entire robe being a soft flexible rubber is a nice touch

Here's my Bandai Kylo Ren. Nice kit, goes together easily and looks the part.

Very nice! The fabric cape looks better than the plastic one.
Here's mine in progress. There's glue on the left shin so I may have to add some weathering to cover that up.

not sure I'm a fan of a colour like that on a supercar but I love that car.

I'm going for a wide spectrum for my lambos. I have hot pink and bright green in the stash.
