View Full Version : Which heads would you like to see for MP Ratchet & Ironhide?

Hypothetical question: If Takara TOMY were to produce Masterpiece Ratchet & Ironhide, which head would you like to see them create for which toy? The G1 cartoon had two different head types for both characters; one with a "thin" helmet, and another with a "thick" helmet.

I'd personally like to see Ratchet made with the "thin" helmet and Ironhide with a "thick" helmet type. It would help to make Ratchet and Ironhide look more distinct from each other (akin to what was done for the MP Nissans), and the "thick" helmet style looks more suitable to a fighter type like Ironhide IMHO. :o

I too like the more rounded head for Ratchet. The thick one suits Ironhide more IMO. Honestly, I always thought they were that way until you pointed it out.

They could do what I Gear did and give you 2 heads so you can pick and chose

I think the thicker helm gives a more 'mature'/'seasoned' look.

Or alternatively something similar to what they're doing w/ MP Bumblebee and have switchable helmets. Although I'd rather see resources focused towards other gimmicks & accessories for each toy. :o

Another reason why I think it suits Ironhide more, who was originally portrayed as the "old timer" of the Autobots before Kup came along. ;) Ratchet not so much though (that's more of an Animated thing).

I don't like the round 'motorbike' helmets. Thick, chunky heads please.:)

I would much rather see flat faces behind windscreens than any of the above.

I think the motorbike helmet look better suits Ratchet because it's reminiscent of the helmets worn by (http://www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2005/08/21/qantas_wideweb__430x273.jpg) ambulance (http://cdn.24.co.za/files/Cms/General/d/987/e273c836f7944bec9aee8fed1c073ffc.jpg) paramedics (http://www.stippy.com/wp/wp-content/zuploads/2006/11/helmets.jpg) (and other search and rescue workers (http://nhindependent.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/imgp9491_5.jpg)). The thick helmets remind me more of those worn by Ancient Greek (http://i11.piczo.com/view/i/3/209/226672/209226672_418453344_1.jpg) and Roman soldiers (http://www.thatmom.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/roman-helmet-frm-1st-century.jpg), and thus would better suit Ironhide (IMHO).

MPs seem to be more based on recreating show-likeness than G1 toy accuracy. But perhaps TakTOM could release more G1 toy-accurate variants as limited exclusives (à la G2 MP Sideswipe). :o It would require more significant retooling of course, including somehow relocating the shoulders further down.

Indeed, but since the question was asking which heads I would like to see, flat sticker head is my answer. And I would like the toy to have a windscreen that can move up to cover the head, à la the toy/War Within. Also, since it looks like Masterpiece Bumblebee has a removable face, I assume the other option is a toy-accurate battle-mask, which would mean they're not entirely eschewing toy faces.

That's cool. :) Sure beats a suggestion I had from someone on FB on wanting to see TF Prime Ratchet's head on an MP G1 Ratchet toy!

I like the idea of the windscreen being able to move up (would most likely be easier/cheaper than getting the shoulders to move down :o). A toy-accurate battle mask may also be an easier option, though you still don't get the whole 'flat head' and windscreen accuracy. Otherwise they could just include cut-out colour prints of the G1 face as part of the instruction booklet (similar to what TakTOM did with MP Soundwave's chest display thing); somehow able to be slipped on and off the existing face (i.e. have the edges of the sheet wedged between the face and insides of the helmet.

Swappable heads would be my first preference (let the collector decide), but Thick Ironhide, thin Ratchet would be my second choice.

Swappable could work really well...

Even though the animated consistency of the cartoon is all over the place, the character models of Ironhide and Ratchet are less identical than people might think. The main difference is that Ratchet is curvier than Ironhide, and as such motorcycle-helmet-Ratchet and Spartan-helmet-Ironhide make the most sense. (For their characters too.)

Note that it was probably hard for the animators to work out what the hell was going on with the characters' chins if they were given the above linework to work from, hence even more potential inconsistency than usual.

I reckon you're onto something there man, as I feel much the same as the more slender helms definitely give-off a more youthful appearance - Hence I'm going with "Thick". ;)

I selected "other". I did so because I'm not sure it matters all that much. The variations in the pics in the first post are animation inconsistencies, rather than deliberate interpretations of the characters. I suspect that whatever comes out will be about right, based on the MP cars we have so far, which don't seem especially thick or thin to me. A happy medium?

I'm going with 'thick', because I recall seeing the thick helmets more often, thus making them 'definitive' in my opinion (another example is Grimlock's robot head in SOS Dinobots and Heavy Metal War - the 'rounded' head is only seen in a few episodes, as opposed to the 'angular' head).

Anyone know which version of the Ironhide/Ratchet helmet appeared more often in the cartoon?

It would be awesome if they added this as a nod to the originals.

Hope they get made... the interviews with the MP designers suggest they have been on their minds.

both for both please.
i like to have the option where available to swap faces on characters. its one of my favourite gimmicks

I don't mind which one they use, as long as they are both the same.

I think that the helmets look different enough to distinguish the two, and I liked how they were otherwise similar.

Unless TT decided to pull a quick one and make one of each and dont provide the face swap. lol

Now thats where I would need to discuss over with coffee and doughnuts.

Voted thin for each because aesthetically in the pictures provided they look better..................
.......However, when you think of the characters roles thick for Ironhide and thin for Ratchet make more sense, ie Ironhide is the warrior who wants to put some hurt on some Decepticreeps and would need a thicker helmet for protection and the odd headbutt to the enemy here and there, whereas Ratchet is the medic who realistically would be back from the battle repairing injured bots.
