View Full Version : How complete is your G1 collection?

For those of us who have collected or are collecting G1, how complete is your collection?
========================
UPDATE!
To make things a whole lot simpler and hopefully more fun, I am creating a series of "flip card" activities. All you have to do is swipe the card to the right if you have the toy, and swipe to the left if you don't. That's it! :D
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y227/goktimusprime/Transformers/howto_flipcards_zpsy6qymoyu.jpg
* Part 1: 1984~85 (Bluestreak to Whirl) (https://www.playbuzz.com/goktimusprime10/how-many-g1-transformers-do-you-own-part-i)
* Part 2: 1986~87 (Air Raid to Wideload) (https://www.playbuzz.com/goktimusprime10/how-many-g1-transformers-do-you-own-part-ii)
* Part 3: 1988~89 (Backstreet to Wildfly) (https://www.playbuzz.com/goktimusprime10/how-many-g1-transformers-do-you-own-part-iii)
* Part 4: 1990~91 (Air Patrol to Windmill) (https://www.playbuzz.com/goktimusprime10/how-many-g1-transformers-do-you-own-part-iv)
* Part 5: 1992~93 ("Bonecrusher" to Windbreaker) (https://www.playbuzz.com/goktimusprime10/how-many-g1-transformers-do-you-own-part-v)
* Special: Japanese exclusive G1 Transformers (Artfire to Leeland) (https://www.playbuzz.com/goktimusprime10/how-many-g1-transformers-do-you-own-special-japanese-g1)
Please note that the "Special" one will only include Japanese Transformers toys that are significantly different from their Hasbro counterparts. e.g.
+ Wilder will not appear on the list, so for the purposes of this list, he shall be considered as a variant of Fangry. So if you own a Wilder but not Fangry, then swipe right to vote "Yes" for owning Fangry, as Wilder will not appear in the Japanese TF listing.
+ Minerva will appear on the list. So if you own Minerva but not Nightbeat, then swipe left to vote "No" for Nightbeat and right to vote "Yes" for Minerva.
Also, because it only allows for a maximum of 99 flip cards, some of the upcoming lists will be truncated according to toys sold together. e.g. Wingspan and Pounce will be a single listing, as will all Micromaster Patrols, Squads etc.

I'm up to 1985 and the Jumpstarters are missing. D'oh!
Also do reissues count? Gold box classics, Commemorative, Encore etc? That will affect my count.

Cool.
But Topspin and Twin Twist?
(2 omissions out of so many easily forgiven but could affect a percentage point)
I have a nice even 250 (I included Jumpstarters in my count and total) and rounded up from 55.55%

Ive completed up to 89 but big gap in 90-91 (havent hit the action masters yet). So around 70ish percent. I really think the list should include takara exclusives too as they are part of g1to make a definitive list

My G1 collection is 1.76 % complete I own 8 G1 which are mostly Takara Collection boxes and a few Hasbro Commemorative Series. I'd buy more but MP's are just so awesome so I'm just sticking with them. If I were going to get more I'd consider getting...

This thread is flawed beyond belief if reissues count. Might as well say if you have any version of the bot just tick him off! Lets add minispys, decoys and those watches as well! If someone asks me my count it sits above 90% as there is only one or two small bots that I want to complete my G1 collection.

Whats the official Ruling on the Minispies? are they considered variations? as you only have the following listed:
78 1985 Mini Spy (Toyota)
79 1985 Mini Spy (Porsche)
80 1985 Mini Spy (Jeep)
81 1985 Mini Spy (Mazda)
But since there were technically Autobot and Decepticon Versions and 3 colours (Blue - White - Yellow) that is a total of 24 minispies
Just Curious

Fair question. I've just counted each Mini Spy mould with colour and faction considered variants for the purposes of this list anyway. :)

I got 95% (just under, but close enough). Where's Time Warrior?
BTW Skullcruncher - I see your point (I personally count my reissues as G1 while I know some don't). I guess there's enough hair splitting we could do ("Classics" Optimus Prime is G1 & encore is not, do we count Pepsi Prime separately etc) that a simple inclusive definition that reduces variants keeps it simple for the same of this little poll.

Just curious to know how complete our G1 collections are "actually" complete (i.e. attempting to include all of G1), as opposed to "personally" complete (i.e. people's personal/individual G1 collecting limit, which may not include all of G1). For example, I'm 45 Transformers short of an actually complete collection, but most of those toys are ones that I have little interest in acquiring, if any (because let's face it, if I really wanted most of these toys, I would've bought them when they were out in the 80s/90s). There's only 2 toys that I really want to collect before I personally consider my G1 collection to be complete, although technically it still wouldn't be actually complete.
I don't care about having an actually complete G1 collection mind you. But I'm curious to know, when people say that they have 'completed' their G1 collection, how much of that is actually complete or personally complete.
This is not meant as a criticism against people who are pursuing personally complete collections -- I'm in the same boat -- but I'm just curious to know how many people's G1 collections are actually complete. :)
I don't know what my percentage is exactly because I actually haven't counted them but I'd guess it is very low as I must have 25 at most. Plus I'm guessing God Ginrai doesn't count.
No, God Ginrai and Takara-exclusive Transformers don't count.

Having said that there are a few on the list that I am not including in my G1 collection.
For the purposes of this poll, we're looking at the entirety of G1, as per the list. So please do include everything on the list when calculating the completion of your G1 collection for this poll, thanks. :)
e.g. In terms of my "personal" G1 collection, it's 99.5% complete, which would round up to 100%. But in terms of having an actually complete G1 collection, mine is 90% complete; thus I've voted on 90%, not 100%.
MayzaPrime

I gather collectors who own less than 10% are not worthy enough for the poll? I have 1 G1 toy so it works out at .022%. Perhaps a 'Less than 10%' option would be good for us less important collectors.

Which would round down to 90%^up to 95% for this poll. :)

I hope it's because you already wanted those toys anyway. Only people who are Hasbro G1 completists would have or aim to achieve an actually 100% complete collection. For those of us who aren't completists, we're unlikely to reach that number, and probably don't want to anyway.
As I said, there's 2 more toys that I'd like to get before my collection is "personally" complete. So once that happens, while my collection may be personally 100% complete, it would only be 91% actually complete (which would still round down to 90% for this poll anyway :p). The remaining 9% are toys that I just don't care enough about to go hunting down on the aftermarket and paying inflated prices for. :o Once I get those last 2 toys, I'll be pretty much done with G1 as far as I'm concerned. It will be as complete as I want it to be. :) Sure, if the opportunity to get any of that 9% at a cheap price happened to come by my way, I won't say no (as unlikely as it may be), but I'm not going to actively pursue them. ;)

I have a Powermaster Optimus from when I was a kid (I don't have him in my collection because of condition) and I have a God Ginrai now. I would argue that Super Ginrai is actually not PM OP. He is a surprisingly extensive remould and redeco.

It's convoluted, but if reissues count, since God Ginrai was reissued in the US as Commemorative G1 Powermaster Optimus Prime (with Apex Armour) and they're basically the same mould (yes, with differences in fists, chroming, die-cast, windows and smokestacks) it would suggest that one would retroactively count as the other for the purpose of this poll. But, since it's one toy, whichever way it's counted isn't going to make a difference unless it's on the cusp of x0% and y5%.

This board only allows for a maximum of 15 poll options. I won't object if any mods would like to edit the "10%" option to "10% or less."

^Agree with this. :)
Okay, how about we go by this rule: If you were to put a Takara TF next to its Hasbro counterpart, if the difference is immediately noticeable then it doesn't count, but if not then it can count. :)
As DELTAprime said, Ginrai is an extensive remould/redeco from PM Optimus Prime with the difference being quite noticeable upon first inspection. Others would include: Minerva, Go-Shooter, Double Clouder, Leozak, Jalgar, Killbison, Drillhorn, Dinoking et al. Takara toys like Cancer, Gilmer, Lander, King Poseidon, Cab, Holy, Peepoh, Fire, Boater, Moon Radar etc. would count since those toys are identical to their Hasbro counterparts.

I've been doing an audit of my collection lately (as my Twitter followers would know) but having so many G1 I wasn't even going to consider it. This poll, and the list, gave me an excuse to a mental checklist of my G1 toys and I've now got a very clear idea of how many TFs I have in total. (And its much less than I feared!)

30th April 2014, 10:03 PM
Heh, that's kewl. :D
I've been thinking about the Ginrai/PM Optimus Prime thing, and one "loophole" I've thought of is Apex Armour Powermaster Optimus Prime (http://gofigureactionfigures.com/media/powermasteroptimusprime(commemorative).jpg). So for this particular toy we'll have a special ruling where only if the toy is Apex Armour PM Prime w/ the lengthened chromeless missile, then it can count as PM Optimus Prime (since reissues count), but if the toy is Ginrai (w/ short chrome missile), then it doesn't count. If someone happens to have acquired this toy loose w/o a missile... then meh, count it if you want. :p ;)

Very slowly hehehe, I have to clean the whole lot in about a week tops. That's because I do it per shelf of course, the shelves itself is easy coz you just need a glass cleaner (it's black glass) give it a good wipe, and since there's no sides of the shelves - there's not much to clean shelf wise. But for the figures, I wear those microfiber mittens that I bought from Kmart so that while Im handling them they're getting a wipe as well, I don't even do a proper wipe of each figure anymore heheh. Couldn't be bothered but there's not much dust thank goodness as there's not much activity in the room itself, I usually take which figure I wanna play with and fiddle play or take pics in my bedroom where Ive got plenty of space to move around ;P

I'm starting to question if I ever will finish my G1 collection now. Due to for the first time in a while being ahead on our finances my wife had no problem with me spending a bit on getting a G1 figure. But every figure I looked at on ebay on the weekend that I didn't have that I wanted, I couldn't justify spending that much on. Even Hardhead who I've wanted for years! Every year the G1 toys on offer become rarer and older and thus dearer and most of them for me have progressed beyond what I think they are worth to add to my collection.
Kind of a sobering realization, since I dreamed one day of owning them all.

Just keep your eyes open for a bargain, they still come up. I got a complete cannon transport on the boards for $15 after skipping the ebay buy it nows for years. I got a AM prowl (complete) for $5 at a collectors fair.
Since looking at it this way (ie: its not a race) its been a lot less stressful for me personally

Good advice ;) Most of what I have picked up in recent years have been Action Master, Micromasters, gimmick ones ( such as Sparkabots etc) but I did get a decent price on Pretender Grimlock earlier this year :)

I am not counting Time Warrior - It is more merchandise than anything else. You include that then you may as well not regard your collection complete until you have every Transformers lunchbox, coloring book and sticker sheet (etc) released in that era.

I'm in the same boat mate, often I look at G1 stuff on Evilbay and walk away. The trouble of getting the seller to post more 'useful' pics to be sure that what might be a good deal actually is, is also a bit of a turnoff.

Very good advice, I have picked up some very good specimens from this board for some excellent prices over the years.
The first time I went to Botcon I had a list as long as my arm of G1 stuff I was going to look out for. Prices were higher than I really expected so I came away with a couple things.
The second and last time I've been to Botcon, I went with the hope of seeing A specific figure which I had a higher budget for based on previous experience. I found it for a better price and better condition than I was expecting, 10 minutes into the dealer room.
From now on my Botcon trips, if there are ever any more, will have a top five list of G1 figures I'm hunting that should allow me to come away with one figure I'm happy with that will make a good reminder of the event.
I'm yet to do a proper count of my G1 stuff, so much is stored at the moment. I couldn't tell you off hand what I do have.
I did your swipe thing, which was fun, but I couldn't see a tally at the end?

I've got about 45 in my display cabinet so I put in 10%. I'm not including quite a few of my figures that I gave to my son to play with. It really is cool to think that I was able to pass these 25-30 year old toys to him. Only problem is that he is always asking for me to give him a few more of them from the cabinet each time he checks them out!

Reminds me of my own son. He is only 2 but loves going up to my cabinet and pointing at them and saying "Who's that one?" then repeating the name once I tell him. Due to his age he can't really transform them yet (apart from G1 Seaspray which I gave him) so at this stage I don't have much to worry about.
Back onto topic, geez I must be getting up to at least 75% complete by now. Mostly only missing Pretenders and Action Masters (do they even count? :p ). Not really fussed on collecting either of those lines so might just end it once I finalise 1984-1988 and micromasters.

It's not that easy, most of my childhood transformers are still at my parents house in Victoria. pretty much all of the G1 toys I have purchased in the last 15 years are currently in plastic tubs with about 80 to 90 % of the rest of my collection. I don't have the space to get them all out and see which ones I do and don't have. Unfortunately many of them I haven't spent a lot of time with, they've gone into storage soon after acquisition to make way for display of newer current toys. perhaps it's time I put a G1 shelf back in my display.

So many Action Masters, so few traditional Transformers products. What happened in those years?
It was Hasbro's attempt at trying to make Transformers into articulated action figures, but of course, sacrificing their ability to transform just made them incredibly stupid. And to make matters worse, their articulation isn't even that great, even by 1990-91 standards! :eek: My first Action Master was Jazz, and while I was impressed by his leg articulation, the articulation on the rest of the figure disappointed me, as it felt like a Star Wars figure from waist-up. We already had G.I. Joe ARAH by then, and I was seriously expecting/hoping that Action Masters would be more like them, given that they'd taken out their ability to transform. But no.
And Action Masters might've been alright if they were just a really small sub-group; like maybe 6 of them. But as you've noticed, they dominated the line, with about half of the franchise being these Action Masters! :eek: And of course, they were explicitly marketed as being part of the main Transformers action figure line, and not some piece of merchandising or "sub line" like a lot of the non-transforming (and shelfwarming) Transformers Age of Extinction and Robots In Disguise toys of late. Many fans consider Action Masters to have played a significant contributing factor in dealing the death blow of Generation 1. Hasbro did go back to making traditional Transformers in 1992-93 (as you'll see in Part 5), and there were some really cool gimmicks like Axelerators and Predators... but it was too late.
By this stage, Hasbro really should've looked at trying something really new, but they didn't. By mid-93 they gave us Generation 2, which of course were initially all just redecoed and repackaged G1 toys. They did start giving us new moulds later, and some with some pretty awesome features (e.g. Gobots), including the first Transformers that were both transformable and poseable in robot mode (e.g. Laser Rods, Cyber Jets, Combat Heroes). Although G2 did have its fair share of utter crap too (e.g. Power Masters). But I guess it just failed to conceptually bring anything new to the Transformers franchise, and thus even some of the best G2 toys continued to languish on shelves for years to come. You could still find G2 toys shelf warming in some stores during the late 90s. I remember finding a mountain of shelf-warming Laser Optimus Primes at Toys R Us in 1999! :eek: And G2 would've definitely seen the end of the Transformers franchise in the mid 90s if not for the fact that their recently acquired Kenner branch decided to try something completely new -- Beast Wars (1996). By 1997 BW had become the 3rd best selling action figure line in the US (after Toy Story and Star Wars). That's an incredible turn around considering that it had hit rock bottom just the year before. :D That's why I often say that, regardless of what anyone thinks about Beast Wars, never disrespect it, because the Transformers franchise would've died off 20 years ago without it. :) I know I'll be pre-ordering Masterpiece Optimus Primal! :D

I loved the Predators and the Turbomasters as a kid. I wish I had them in pristine condition so it would be cool to have them reissued, minus any "safety" changes they made for Machine Wars.
Well, the smaller Turbomasters and Predators were never reused for Machine Wars (only the boxed figures). The safety issues can easily be better rectified by simply removing the springs from the launchers and just making them missile holders (similar to what Hasbro often does for G1 reissues). However, they will need to restore the Predator's scope gimmick on Skyquake and Stalker, because they're already deteriorated on Machine Wars Starscream and Soundwave. I once tried to attach a smaller Predator jet onto my MW Starscream and Soundwave's scopes, and I nearly broke those toys attempting to remove it! :eek: Needless to say that I never tried it again. :rolleyes: And I haven't been game enough to try it with King Atlas either. :o
But I honestly don't know if there's all that much demand for reissues of mid to late G1 figures; the unpopular years. Most of the demand for G1 reissues (and MPs) is predominantly driven by the "Gee Wun" years. Stalker and maybe Skyquake are the only reissues I'd consider getting, because the post on my Stalker's rocket is broken, and while my Skyquake is in good condition <knock.wood>, his gold plastic scope is prone to breakage and I'd like to get another one as back up. ;)
