View Full Version : Some board functions to be removed, to lighten server load.

With the upgrade of this boards software a few months back, a number of new features appeared. Most of them appear to be fairly redundant at this time, and just adds to our server load.

This is more of an advance warning, so that people know that these things will be disappearing soon, and not to think that it is just a technical fault with the board. But if you know of a reason why any of these should be kept (within the context of our board), please post here with your reasons. Some of these may be reinstated if we relocate to a server with unlimited usage and is more reliable.

- Visitor messages (this is definitely going, as it is being mis-used, and not necessary here with the Private Messaging option).
- Social Groups (not being removed yet, but is being watched to make sure it doesn't get mis-used again - the board rules apply on all board related areas).
- Friends Feature, in members' profile page (seems to be an unnecessary)
- Albums (adds to the server load, and there are other options for free hosting of your images).
- Visitor Tracking (also seems to be unnecessary).

MV75, if you look at a user's profile, you'll see who the last ten visitors were.

griffin, is there anyway for us to determine (search and filter) members by their locations?

You mean weirdos like me who encrypt where they live? ;) :p

I think only admin can do it, and as pulse pointed out, people who don't want their location revealed, wouldn't show up in the search.

There is a privacy issue here as well, which some people might not want others being able to track them down, or get an idea of where they might be located if they aren't a very active member.

that's cool...no worries then.

Can we keep friend's feature and social groups please? I like the idea of having many friends... hehe :D

mei..griffin needs to reduce cost for the board.
moreover i really feel its "quite" redundant feature too

social group can be kept at the moment

Like hosting options for pics, we could always set up a Facebook or *shudder* MySpace page for OzFormers.

Though that would probably draw people away from here.

So that's where the non-TF general discussion forum comes in, for "socialising" in there.

Or maybe i'm just disgruntled because I don't have many friends and don't want people to realise that nobody likes me. :p

The Visitor Tracking, Albums, Visitor Messages functions have now been disabled. I've left the Friends feature for now, as I'm still undecided on it.
The social groups stay, until such time as it is mis-used.

Funnily enough, I was looking for something else, and found out how you can.
Click on the 'Members List' tab above, then over on the right hand side click on the 'Search Members' tab, and click on 'Advanced Search'. You can then enter in a rang of options to search.

The Friends feature will stay as well, as I've found that it allows you to use it as a contact list from your profile page, making it easier to send messages to those people you most often talk to.

I'd go into the events forum. The whole calendar and events notices on the main forum page seem to be redundant.

The "Friends" feature... is there any other benefit besides being able to PM someone quicker?

please don't get me wrong.. I want to make full use of it.. but I can't see any other reason besides that :o

I was worried that it may be seen as a popularity thing, and have some feel left out if they didn't have any, but it does have its use as a contact list/address book for PMing. And at least if you wanted people added to your friends list, you can just apply to add them. I doubt there would be too many who would reject another member's request.
