View Full Version : Manspace: new Aussie TV show about man caves and male collectors

Paulbot
13th May 2014, 03:25 PM
The ManSpace team has travelled the country to find Australia’s most impressive man caves and avid male collectors. The program, filmed in front of a live audience from a remarkable real man cave in Melbourne, also addresses men’s issues and special interests.

Combining curiosity with larrikin humour, ManSpace examines what it means to be an Aussie bloke in the complicated, modern technological world.

7:30pm Monday, May 26 on GO!

I wonder if any of the impressive TF rooms of our collectors have been filmed (and our members sworn to secrecy?)

Whether they'd even think to include toy collectors is a question mark but there could be semi-related fields.

I find it good to look at collection pics for storage and display ideas as most home decorating magazines tend not to cover the topic.

I quite like the Shelf Porn feature on the Comic book resources website and they covered an impressive Aussie comic book fan mancave (http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2013/03/shelf-porn-an-australian-man-cave-to-be-proud-of/)last year.

If the show covered rooms like that, it could be a good watch. Will probably mostly have sporting memorabilia collections though.

It would be interesting, but I fear that it is likely to be a cross between Bogan Hunters and Top Gear... as they seem to emphasis "Aussie Bloke", which would suggest sporting & alcoholic themed mancaves... with obligatory home theatre, mini-bar and pool table. :p

Yeah I think this would be it. Keep in mind that geek culture in Australia is not as big as overseas and still has a somewhat negative stigma to it.

It will most likely be about 'footy' and 'Cricket' stuff as well as beer, cars, motorbikes, etc. May have the odd rouchy theme every now and then as a cheap way to maintain interest but I doubt it would have much geek stuff in it.

Nothing wrong with that ;)

We have a granny flat in our house that my in-laws live in. When they move out, it will become my man cave. Already have it all mapped out too. Just have to play the waiting game now:D

This does have promise, but I got to admit as well that when I first heard of it, I immediately thought Man Show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0t4pyuEe7E). Hopefully it's done right. It might be the one show I'll watch on free-to-air.

Yep - my thoughts exactly.

There used to be an aussie show which was a rip-off of tne USA show 'The Man Show' except with much lower production values and much smaller breast implants on the dancers. It was on late Friday nights and died in the arse very quickly. I suspect this show will be the same.

Personally I do have a man cave, I converted half our large shed into a blokes room with a bar, pool table, beer fridge, dart board, wood heater, footy and band posters on the walls etc etc. Its cool but I dont think it would warrant a visit from a TV show.

I'm sorry how is having a man cave linked to being a bogan? I generally thought bogans were in the lower socio-economic scale where as some man caves I've seen have a lot of rather expensive memorabilia in it. How is having a man cave full of memorabilia for your favourite sporting team any different to having a room full of toys? As someone who is planning a man cave and I have friends who have man caves I'm offended at the immediate links to being a bogan.

Hi guys, just thought I'd let you know, (as an editor on the show) that although the title is ManSpace this is not a bogan show at all and doesn't focus on sports either. It's very different to any show I've seen before as it just basically gives props to the average aussie bloke who collects things or has a real passion for something. It's actually quite a funny show too!

For those who are interested we even have a guy who has built a huge observatory in his front yard!

And what's wrong with that? He's only passing on info to people who wrongly think its going to be all about bogans and sport. i've seen the ad on air, looks like it could be a good show.

There's nothing wrong with that but it comes out as fake since it is not a known member who's posting the info but a newbie. Your entire reason for joining this site is to promote this agenda instead of why this forum exists in the first place.

Thankyou for taking an interest in our interest in your show. Please ignore all negative commentary as members of our community can have a very bruised mentality regarding their portrayal (or lack of portrayal) in mainstream media.

I for one would like to see Man Caves that contain a healthy mix of interests from the 'bogan' to the 'geeky' and 'intellectual' to outright 'bonkers' as I believe most Australians fall somewhere inbetween in their interests rather than at the extremes.

But please refrain from creating multiple accounts simply to defend and promote your show.

Nothing is wrong with it.
I was just posting an observation about marketing strategies using google to track what people think of Brands, Products and Programs, based on the random appearances of people here lately who aren't TFs fans. I was not commenting about the show at all in my post (re-read it)... and have made sure we have non-Transformers sections here to allow for people to talk about other things.

That's not entirely true, and unfair. We encourage Transformers fans to join here, but don't reject people who join up for non-Transformers reasons (like Lego, MOTU, games, movies, TV, etc)... as long as they adhere to the rules.
His posting was a response to our earlier comments, so it would be unfair to censor people from submitting an alternative view just because they aren't Transformers fans.
As long as they don't spam the site, a rational commentary on their point of interest is okay, as previous opinions were just speculation. If a person working on a project knows better, then why not allow them to dispel false assumptions.

I don't think i'm censoring him. I think the fact that a first post by newbie would be on this topic instead of anything else gives the same impression posted by Trev. If it wasn't their first posts even by a newbie, i would think nothing of it.

I watched the first one but it wasn't quite for me. I'm not exactly the right demographic of male they appear to be aiming for.

But I did think that the Mancave Storage (http://mancavestorage.com.au/) they were cross-promoting would be handy for someone with both the money, a very large TF collection and no more room in your house.

I flicked over to it tonight while on the computer and wanted some background noise... and it was actually quite interesting. The presenters looked like they'd fit in with the "bogan hunters" show, but the content was more like Top Gear... with tips and tricks for the average Aussie "bloke".

But the thing that caught my attention was just after I turned onto that show, they were featuring the scooter that came with the 1980s Honda City... which I didn't even know was real.
For those with the Ehobby Skids/Screech mould toys, the original pre-Transformers toys came with a fold-up scooter. I just thought it was just an accessory for the toy, but now I've seen a real one brought out, unfolded, and driven off... plus they showed the original Japanese commercial for it (you can see it here (http://youtu.be/XzInpoS5xuk?t=22s) & at 1.04mins (http://youtu.be/XzInpoS5xuk?t=1m4s)).

Wow... that was so worth watching. And gives the show a little Transformers link.

Well, I finally got around to watching some of the show.

I genuinely tried to give it a chance but found myself totally uninterested. Had a bunch of older and younger folk talking about dating with generic, uninteresting generalizations that you would have heard a million times before.

The most sinful thing! Canned laughter! Don't deny it Manspace producers if you are still trawling the net for any mention of your show! Some woman in a red jacket was chatting, a crowd laughing noise came up yet EVERY crowd member in the background behind her was sitting there stoically with nary a facial twitch, let alone a whole crowd chuckle. To be fair I did see the crowd laugh at other jokes at it seemed genuine, but they definitely have someone pressing a chuckle button on the editing track for when they didn't.

A little tip for the editors, if you are going to put a laugh track in, make sure that you don't show the crowd NOT laughing in the background

I would watch it if it showed more variety and pushing towards something a little higher brow, doesn't have to be strictly Transformers.

The collector's on ABC was actually rather good and interesting.
