Inspired by sifuns.... What the crap are parents doing thread? I wondered if we could imagine a worthier reason to let our kids drop out of high school for. Other than to pursue air guitar fame and fortune.

Depends. If the kid is sure of what he wants to do with his life and a University degree/High School Diploma is not necessary, then it may be ok.
If he is drifting and unsure (like many of us are at that age) I would get them to finish High School so that there are more open avenues to persue at the end.
However depending on the profession you are taking, Uni could be overated and often a complete waste of time and money, specially if you are just starting out.

I share TheDirtyDigger's sentiment... but if my kid really wanted to drop out before university graduation, s/he and I would have to sit down and have a long talk about it. If s/he can submit a convincing/persuading enough argument then I might consider the proposal. It all depends on why s/he feels the need to drop out and what alternative plans s/he has to do instead of further education.
Basically my question would be "so what do you want to do with your life instead?" - give me a long term plan. I wouldn't want my kid dropping out just for the sake of it without thinking about an alternative life plan and instead becoming a bum (especially if s/he's still living at home!!!)

If you have kids, specially in Sydney with things continuing as they are. Expect to have them living at home until they are at least 35, specially if they are good at school and Uni and need to pay Hex for an expensive degree!

I'd make them finish at least year 12. Then they can do what they want as long as it leads to becoming self-reliant

...and so long as it's not illegal or morally dubious. I wouldn't want my kid gaining employment with a crime syndicate or turning tricks. :p

How does that Chris Rock quote go?
"Sometimes I am walking with my daughter, I'm talking to my daughter, I'm looking at her, I'm pushing her in the stroller. And sometimes I pick her up and I just stare at her and I realize my only job in life is to keep her off the pole." :D

....or leave school to become a nominee for your local motorcycle chapter. Even though in SA they could only play with their freinds 6 times a year legally.

If my son turns out to be a prodigy in either a sport or the arts I will make him continue to study and finish high school so atleast he has something to fall back on as these careers are not set in stone. However if he wants to leave high school early and has picked himself up an apprenticeship of sorts then I wont have any problems with that either.
